Bad Search...SIX TIMES?

We usually try to limit our "fair use" of media material to three paragraphs and then direct the readers to the actual website to complete their reading so as not to deprive the originators of visiting eyeballs. We took a bit more of this article to drive home a point. It regards the gun found in the Cook County Jail laundry room earlier this month:
  • A 39-year-old man is accused of trying to bring a gun into Cook County Jail complex after he was arrested and taken there for a bond hearing, officials said. Bennie Ellison, 39, was charged today with possession of contraband in a penal institution stemming from an incident earlier this month in which a gun was found at the jail.

Ellison was arrested on March 18 on a possession charge, said Cook County Sheriff spokesman Steve Patterson.

Ellison tied a small 38-caliber handgun to the strings of his shorts, Patterson said.

The suspect was searched by Chicago police officers on the scene and taken to a district station, according to the spokesman.

Ellison was searched a second time and then taken to central booking where he was patted down a third time, Patterson said.

On March 19, Ellison was searched a fourth time by a court deputy before he appeared in Central Bond Court, Patterson said.

After his bond was set, Ellison was transferred to intake were he was supposed to pass through a pair of metal detectors. But he avoided doing so by slipping into a line of men who had already gone through the detectors, Patterson said.

At that point, Ellison tossed the gun into a laundry pile in a loading area outside Division 5 at the jail.
That's THREE Chicago Police searches, ONE County search AND he avoided TWO County metal detectors.

WHAT THE FUCK?!? How many cops did he come in contact with? How many sheriffs? This guy could have executed any number of law enforcement officers over the course of two days. If you aren't going to do the searches to keep yourself safe, do it for the poor bastard who has to handle your prisoner after processing or transporting who might have someone who misses them at home.

And yes, we've seen the comments popping up about the gun making it into the 011th District lock up. At least their lock up found the damn thing after just a single miss by the 012th District officers. This one was about SIX misses by two different commands (district, central detention) and two different departments and had to rely on the honesty of a Cook County inmate working the laundry room to find the pistol.

SCC, you are assuming a lot. You're assuming this actually happened. You're assuming that the gun wasn't given to him somewhere along the lines with certain people "not paying attention." You're assuming that ALL of the people missed ths. Have you ever brought anyone to Central Detention? They don't miss a match in a guys ballsack, you think they would miss a pistol?
3 sides to every story, this story had about 8 before getting to the truth...

This is a statement by the press, most likely provided by CC after their "investigation". While I would agree that it could happen, there is no way to prove it did happened like it is written. Once the prisoner is in the hands of CC, he belongs to CC. If a CR is issued to CPD in this situation, I highly recommend CPD Dicks be assigned to conduct an independent investigation.

I cannot say that I am surprised, can you? I mean really, are you shocked that they did not find the gun at Central Detention?

Next to the equipment and supply unit, Central Detention has the laziest and worst workers of the CPD in it. I have never met somebody down there that is worth a crap, and I have never seen anybody down there that did not act like they were doing you a favor. The funny thing, Central Detention is a BID spot - so these lazy, do nothing, piece of craps all bid to get there. Not like you got forced to work there, and they knew it was a lockup keepers job they bid for. Again, no surprise there but you would not know it based on their job performance and their attitude.

Finally, these are the same CC Sherrifs that want you to put your gun up at other courthouses, but they cannot understand why cops get mad about that. I am supposed to trust these people with courthouse security, and more importantly, my security? NO THANK YOU. Hate to admit it but I also have a gun on me at court, even when it is "put in the gun locker". I'd rather be held in contempt than let these people provide my security.

While this sounds bad on the surface, we have to withhold prejudging before the real facts come out. This mutt claims that he had the pistol on him from the time of arrest. I for one find it hard to believe he made it through TWO CPD lock-ups before getting in the County. While street searches have gone wrong, the guys in the lock-ups always catch it. Especially the guys in Central Detention! Pookey couldn't hide a buttered pin up his ass w/o them finding it! Plus, what ever happened to the handheld metal detectors? They would have found it. But i'm guessing the city hasn't bought fuckin batteries for them in years!
Sounds more like he got it from someone on the inside (possibly smuggled in by a friend, family or even a corrections officer(gee, wouldn't be the first time that happened!) and he thought he'd make bond and get it out for someone else. But under the stressful and pathetic work conditions we work under nowadays, anything's possible!
So, let's first see what the investigation TRULY reveals before we pass judgement. And just a reminder to my brothers.. SEARCH, SEARCH, SEARCH!
That weapon you miss might not kill you, but could you live with yourself knowing it killed another officer, or anyone else for that matter?

I have my doubts that this incident occurred as reported but I have seen crappy searches hundreds of times. I always tell people "Reach up and say hello to Mr. Happy." It ain't a proper search unless you grab the sack. If the offender gets frisky or insulting, you already have the means and proximity to bring the situation under control. If you are embarrassed, get a job at McDonalds.

These "facts" were given to CC by a guy who wanted the story this way. It is assuming he is telling the truth rather than covering for someone. It could have happened this way. But I highly doubt it. Years ago we had a guy in the back of the car that we arrested. Obviously I missed it patting him down but when we got him out of the car and pulled the back seat, there was a loaded 25 cal. We were lucky. My point: If it was missed initially Ellison would have dumped it long before reaching the jail unless he is a complete idiot.

Speaking on behalf of those of us who work inside the jail. I will be the first to admit there is a distinct problem in this gun getting inside. One thing that everyone has to remember is that we have as of recent not been allowed to strip search those coming in on the new. Which would have prevented an item like this from getting into the jail. The ball was still dropped with out question but the public and the administration at the Jail need to realize that it shouldn't matter if someone is "embarrassed' or not because they had to strip in front of 49 other men. Your in jail and that means you lose certain rights to ensure the safety and security of the officers and inmates inside the jail. They didn't give us hand held metal detectors to search inmates coming and going on movement till AFTER this gun incident. The administration at the jail is too reactive and not proactive enough.

Also their new favorite toy is the "Body Scan" machines used at the airport. These were to be used instead of strip searches and they do not work. We have put officers in them with items on their person and the machine does not pick them up.

Same goes for the ION Puffers that we have to go through while entering the jail. An officer I know held two open bags of contraband(drugs) after finding them on a tier in the machine and it didn't go off.

The jail needs to have competent administrators who arn't afraid to do what it takes to run the jail properly and who are more concerned about the officers safety and controlling the inmates and less concerned with the inmates feelings.

Some coppers still avoid the nutsack area due to embarrassment or whatever. I learned long ago that this is one of the favorite hiding places just for that reason. As others have said, search thoroughly and search often. If you are taking custody of a prisoner from someone else who has already searched, then search again. Never trust that the previous search was thorough enough. This incident, if true, is a prime example.

It's easy to miss a gun if you don't search properly. Many oficers are reluctant to search around the genitals of an arestee. The criminals know this and most hide their dope, guns, handcuff keys and whatever in that area.

In my 38 years OTJ I have seen/found a number of items stashed beside what is supposed to be hanging there.

I mentioned it to the director who jumped all over my case about it. Told me not to be racial profiling and looking for shit. But after a few minutes she decided to investigate. Lo and behold, the little bastard admits to having a semi-automatic weapon by his wee wee "for protection". Called the police and had his ass hauled away. After it was all over I noticed a few beads of sweat on the lazy ass director's forehead.

No my friend, I didn't mess up. Fortunately I had nothing to do with any aspect of this case. And as my post said, I agree, it could happen. However, this seems highly unlikely. If we look at past cases, CPD has missed guns. Those guns have always been detected during a more invasive search prior to hitting lockup. The last one that was made public involving CC was actually smuggled into CC and given to the inmate by a ccs.
Sorry if it hurts your feelings, but it's true. Again, I'm not saying that it didn't happen the way your cc investigation says it did, however, red flags are flying on this one, and if I were to have to place a bet, I would put my money on BULLSHIT!

no sh*tbird, stuff gets through all the time, but what you dont know is that the strings he claimed he had the gun tied to in his shorts were cut off and thrown out. what the news doesnt tell you is that the investigation is still on going. they recovered the shorts he came to county with and low and behold.... the strings had been cut off which is consistent with the cpd lock up keeper. my guess, a couple of dirty guards in the county which many of the cpd have to deal with on a daily basis because tons of them live in the ghetto and think they are the police and act a fool, hang out and drink with parolees, convicted felons etc.... so, it really wouldnt suprise me if a guard or family member had something to do with this... this whole story is coming from the bad guy, not from viable and beliveable sources. after all, i am very close to the investigation and know all of the up to date facts.... do you?? or are you just spouting off crap because you dont like cpd and are a wanna be cop... pud!!

Hey STUPID....my previous reference to having a CPD Dick independently investigate clearly states only if a CR # is initiated. A CPD investigation by CPD DICKS is solely for the purpose of fact finding to substantiate or more likely, exonerate CPD personnel for any possible disciplinary procedure. Clearly charges have already been, placed on the offender, rendering any criminal investigation against the offender by ISP useless. By the way STUPID, why the hell would ISP investigate an incident which occurred in CC corrections unless you are alleging that cc personnel actually smuggled this gun into cc and gave it to this criminal. If so, I can see why frosty tips would call in ISP to investigating CC personnel. By the way, take the cap lock off on your keyboard STUPID!!!!

Unfortunately this type of thing has happened before and it cost Officer Eddie Jones,Jr his life. When Officer Jones and his partner took this the human garbage out to look for a drug dealer, Green pulled the gun out of his pants and shot both officers. As for Arrestee's and transports got search so many times, and so many different ways, I am lucky they never filed an excessive search complaint. I always insisted my partner, if I had one, do his own search. I can not tell you how many times, I found stuff, in those squad cars that was dangerous. Don't be shy with your searches troops. I am a Cook County Jail Guard and I can tell you that this story is true. What I can't belive is that a CPD Officer is actually going to bash the staff at the Jail and say we are dirty and one of us had to bring it in. Take a look at your own house and Officers before you judge us.

CPD is not the only agency with problems and extremely low morale. We have the same problem with an Administration that does not give a shit about us and only wants to cave to public pressure. We suffer the same embarrassment as you do with scumbag Officers. One screws up and the whole department gets a bad rap. We missed the contraband due to a combination of new rules that won't allow us to strip search, low morale, Officers afraid to do thier job fearing heat from supervisors, poor equipment or lack of equipment. We ALL dropped the ball.

I have always had the utmost respect for CPD. I respect the job that they do. I know who the bad guys are. I am surrounded by them and they wear a uniform. CPD does not always have that luxury. anyone can be a possible cop killer. Read your own headlines before insulting us. That is all I ask.

The media put a pict of "A GUN" on the front page. Thats it "A GUN". It dosnt mean that it was "THE GUN" , after dealing with the media, do you realy think those dumb-fucks can get it right? I'm shocked they didnt put a pict of an M-4 or a full sized shotgun on the cover.

Unfortunately this type of thing has happened before and it cost Officer Eddie Jones,Jr his life. In 1991, Alexis Green somehow managed to hide a gun even after being sent to lockup and presumably searched. When Officer Jones and his partner took this the human garbage out to look for a drug dealer, Green pulled the gun out of his pants and shot both officers. Even if you don't believe the media, please be careful.

GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT! There is a little more to the story than just a "bad search". And out of respect for my brother officers involved in this case, Officer Eddie Jones Jr, his partner, I'd leave it alone.

ISP OR THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SHOULD BE THE ONES TO CONDUCT THE INVESTIGATION OF THIS INCIDENT TO BE SURE IT STAYS IMPARTIAL, WITHOUT POLITICAL INTERFEARENCE. YOU SIMPLY CANNOT INVESTIGATE INCIDENTS AS THIS VIA THE AGENCIES INVOLVED, ESPECIALLY IN CROOK COUNTY. WHAT HAPPENS IF ONE OF THE OFFICERS INVOLVED IS RELATED TO A JUDGE OR A POLICE COMMANDER? GROW A BRAIN ELEPHANTITIS, YOU CAN TELL BY YOUR MONIKER THAT YOU SIR, ARE JUST ANOTHER DUMB-ASSED CLOWN.

Hey Elephant-Boy, CPD Detectives don't investigate C.R. numbers, DOPE. Should we change all the rules and regs now for this one incident? Don't the Dicks have ENOUGH to do straightening out messes made by dummies like YOU every day and night? Smarter individuals by far than you have figured this out decades ago, why can't you? It's called, Reading Comprehension, try learning it some time. And thanks for answering your own brilliant questions with yet another brilliant explaination, pencil-neck.

The weapon was sold, brand new, to buyer #1 at the Wild Bills Pawn #1 Abilene Texas on 27 Jun 08. Sold to buyer # 2 who in turn sold it to Bennie Ellison in Alton Texas. Ellison moved back to Chicago, when he was arrested the gun was in his waist band, 004th dist Tac officers missed it, Bennie leaned into the trunk of the car as he was being searched. In the lock-up the lock-up keepers were playing cards(Is that common practice?) and he stood there for 10 minutes. They called him over to them. Ellison, without being told faced the wall and dropped his pants, rolling the gun up in the front of his jeans, a pair of gym shorts and his boxer shorts. Lock-up keepers patted down his top and told him to pull up his pants, gun still in waistband. Lockup keepers told him to pull up each pant leg and found 16 pkts of cocaine in one sock and one packet of heroin in the other, Ellison still had the pistol(Hope the officers wrote it like it happened). At one point he had the drawstring of the gym shorts holding the pistol in his crotch area. Later he used the snaps in the front of his boxer shorts, through the triger guard to hold it in place. CPD was bad, the jail was even worse. Ellison spent 2 days in jail and made 1 court appearance, all with the loaded (7 rounds) pistol. Everyone who encountered Ellison should go to Mass on Sunday and give thanks. Don't be lazy, your life or the life of your partner depends on you.

FYI, CPD does have some Dicks that investigate CR's. No harm, no foul....your incorrect facts didn't make it far. I'm sure most readers couldn't make heads or tails out of the unintelligible response your so proud of...STUPID

Not so fast, remember approximately a year ago a f/1 was revealed to have smuggled a gun into county jail visiting area when it was revealed that a glass partition was forcibly removed and the weapon was then passed into the hands of an enmate and was later used inside the jail and a prisoner was shot in the arm in an attempt to file a phoney law suit saying the enmates lives where jeoperdized by laxed security in allowing a deadly weapon to be smuggled into the jail, needless to say "I DO HAVE MY DOUBTS"

No disrespect to Officer Jones or anyone else involved in the case was intended. Just a reminder to be safe. The best way to honor the fallen hero is to make sure no one suffers the same fate. BE SAFE & thanks for all you do.

While I am not sure that this comment will be posted I will say it anyway. Let's just face it...mistakes were made by both CPD as well as the guards at 26/Cal. Ellison brought the gun with him into the jail. No one gave it to him while he was in there. He is nothing but a drug addict, not some type of big time drug dealer who would be able to pay someone off to risk their life or job to sneak him a loaded gun. If in fact he had anymore than drugs for personal use on him at the time of arrest he probably stole them. Now get over trying to place the blame on each other and make an effort to perform more thorough searches in the future so that everyone can be safe. Remember that someone comes in contact with your prisoner after you..
