Four Cops Dead In Oakland

  • Law enforcement sources said that four officers are dead, along with a suspect after a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt in the streets of East Oakland.

It all began with the the fatal shooting of two officers during a traffic stop near 73rd and Hillside Streets, around 1 p.m. Saturday. The gunman fled and police closed off the surrounding streets to traffic while dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies conducted an intense search for the suspect.

At about 3:10 p.m., a SWAT team confronted the suspect barricaded inside an apartment building close to location of the first shooting. Gunfire was exchanged between the two parties, fatally wounding two more officers, and killing the suspect.
No word on what precipitated this event, but an almost unheard of death toll on Oakland PD tonight. Keep them in your prayers.

UPDATE: Initial reports had all four killed, but updates have three dead, one in critical to grave condition.

UPDATE: The fourth officer died of his wounds. We were hoping we wouldn't have to switch the headline back to the original "Four," but it wasn't to be.

My heart goes out to the families of the OPD officers that suffered this absolutely tragic loss WHICH NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

Lovelle Mixon, 26, of Oakland, who was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He had a no-bail warrant out for his arrest on charges of violating parole. He had previous convictions in Alameda County for grand theft and possession of marijuana.

I HOPE THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RELEASE OF THIS PIECE OF SHIT BACK INTO SOCIETY HAVE NIGHTMARES ABOUT WHAT THEY CAUSED FOR THE REST OF THEIR MISERABLE LIVES.

How many lives have been ruined because of your decision.

The bullshit of the event is that most news posts show a picture of the asshole offender and not the pictures of the 4 HERO'S of the Oakland P.D. and the rest of their department who brought this jagoff to justice. I can't ever say that I have seen this magnitude of loss on our department at once nor I know how the rest of the department feels now, but, as a brother in blue, I have an idea. Rest in Peace Brothers.

"When God Made the Police Officer"
author unknown

When the Lord was creating the police officer, he was into his sixth day
of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of
fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?

A police officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark,
scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch,
and not wrinkle his uniform."

"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout,
cover a homicide scene that night, canvas the neighborhood for witnesses,
and testify in court the next day."

He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black
coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands.

" The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no
way."

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's
the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before
he asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?"

(When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.)

"Another pair here in the side of his head for his partners' safety.

And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a
bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be all right.'
when he knows it isn't so."

"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this
tomorrow."

"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250
pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five
on a
civil service paycheck."

The angel circled the model of the police officer very slowly,
"Can it think?" she asked.

"You bet," said the Lord.

"It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings
in its sleep;
detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in
less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...
and still it keeps its sense of humor.

This officer also has phenomenal personal control.

He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a
child abuser,
comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law
enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the
officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced.

"I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."

"That's not a leak," said the lord, "it's a tear."

"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to
that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."

"The tear... God you're a genius," said the angel.

The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there."

On motorcycles, Sgt. Mark DUNAKIN and PO John HEGE made "routine" traffic stop on Lovell MIXON at 74th & MacArthur Blvd. in Eastmont section of Oakland abou 1:16 PM PDT Both shot near their cycles w/semi-auto pistol, NFD. MIXON fled on foot.

Area cordoned off to traffic for manhunt.

About 2 hrs. later, acting on an anonymous tip, OPD received info that MIXON was barricaded in a nearby apt. bldg. After no response to surrender, OPD SWAT made entry. SWAT Sgts. Erv ROMANS and Dan SAKAI were fatally shot with assault weapon, NFD. where MIXON was hiding in a closet. An unidentified 3rd SWAT officer shot and killed MIXON. He sustained a superficial GSW wound to head; treated & released at Highland Hospital where other sgts. expired, if not dead at scene.

PO John HEGE is on life support in "grave" condition.

Aside from 9/11, this incident ranks as the most police officers murdered in related incidents in modern U.S. history.

I believe 5 CPD officers were killed by a bomb in the 19th Century Haymarket riot.

CPD has had seven DOUBLE homicides of officers during my career.

May God bless these officers, their families and the OPD.

3 Sgts dead, 1 Po on life support, 1 Po treated and released.

First Sgt was doing a traffic stop with a fellow motorcylce officer, both shot. The Sgt dies on scene and the Po is on life support.

Two other Sgts were first through the door of the apartment the offender was hiding in. The offender gunned them down instantly with an assault rifle and fellow officers killed the offender. One of those officers was grazed in the head and was treated and released.

The offender used two different weapons in his deliberate attacks.

If your a praying man, keep a thought for the officer on life support and some well deserved time off for the other officer injured.

These Sgt's lead by example in both the Motorcycle unit and Swat units.

May god bless all the families involved and the OPD.

Rest in peace Sgt's.

From a Po that never left patrol and now Sgt who chooses to remain there, on the street.

If J-GOOF had the common sense to ride a few tours in a beat car with us where the shit is popping, he would know what our summer is going to be like.

Yesterday, at the opening of the 007th District Station, he and the Maniac Mayor looked around like a new building was going to make everything better in Make-Believe Land. Also, in an interview at the same station, J-GOOF says we do not like to write movers, so giving that problem to security officers is something to explore.

However, J-GOOF, this is the real world, not Make-Believe Land. You would know so if you got your head out of your ass.

But, have at it, J-GOOF. We will be there to write the reports when the street animal murders or assasinates your security officers on a traffic stop. Hey J-GOOF, did you see what happened in Oakland, CA yesterday? Sadly, that is the real world and the animal killed men, real men, real heroes, that are forever Police Officers, on a traffic stop for a moving violation. This is for real J-GOOF, it is not a 300+K a year game. As a FED, you and your buddies have no idea about the real world of POLICING. Leave now and leave quickly. You are an embarassment to the men and women of the CPD. And fuck Mikva for recommending you and fuck that piece of shit on the 5th floor of city hall for bringing you here.

I agree that with the obvious exception of the World Trade Center on 9/11, the related murders of four police officers is a horrific record for post World War II in the United States.

However, during the Haymarket Square Riot of May 4, 1886, a total of EIGHT members of the CPD sustained fatal wounds from either a dynamite bomb or gunfire.

Since 1955, the CPD has had SEVEN double murders of police officers:

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

4/14/69 Sgt. James SCHAFFER, B&A
(004) Det. Gerald STUBIG, B&A

11/13/69 PO John GILHOOLY, 002
(002) PO Frank RAPPAPORT, 003

White Sox's Guillen honors Oakland PD victims

By Mark Gonzales

PHOENIX - White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen wore the initials "OPD" on his cap in memory of the four Oakland, Calif., police officers who were shot and killed this weekend.

"It should be a sad day for the Bay Area," Guillen said before Sunday's game with Oakland. "I never see anything sadder than a police funeral."

A moment of silence was observed before Sunday's game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

"We only worry about police when they are killed," Guillen said. "We don't give them enough credit for making our lives easier."

I truly, am beside myself in greif for those guys, their families and the department. That is the worst and this goes to show how much we are at risk out there. No one gives a shit about killing us.

And in return, our mayor pisses on us because, we let him know that he made a bad choice in who is running the department. He slaps and spits at our feet every turn.

And the only kind word he has to say about us, is when one of us has died in the line of duty.
Because he has to, not because he wants to.

This tragedy is a good lesson for the CPD. We need to get a heavy weapon into EVERY patrol car today.
-----------------------------------
The two motorcycle cops were killed with a handgun at close range, and the SWAT cops with a rifle. The SWAT cops had the full regalia including military grade body armor and automatic weapons, and had the advantage of knowing they were up against a determined and desperate adversary.

The scum just turned out to be a better, or luckier, shot.

In any case, where are you going to secure a carbine on a motorcycle?

Not that the basic idea of arming CPD street cops with heavier weapons is a bad idea, but don't learn the wrong lessons. None of the deaths would have been prevented by arming street cops with carbines.
