New Illinois State Police Director

  • The newly appointed director for the Illinois State Police is a 29-year-old decorated military veteran from St. Charles.

Jonathon E. Monken, a Bronze Star recipient and former U.S Army Captain, has served in both Kosovo and Iraq, Gov. Quinn said at a news conference today.

Our blogging brothers over at ISPeeved have some a post or two up and the comment sections are alive with humor, despair and sarcasm to rival anything we see here daily.

We'll just say that a 29-year-old wunderkind with zero police experience running a major police department? Thank goodness this could never happen in Chicago.

I could understand a retired colonel or a BG. These could be people with a lot of experience in managing large organizations. The lack of police experience seems less of an issue.

But a NG captain? As best I can tell the largest organization he ever managed was a platoon.

Its not a good sign when a police executive resigns effective immediately. Usually it means the guy has very serious medical or legal problems.

I liked Quinn and thought he may be taking the state in right direction. I believe this guy may have the qualifications to be an excellent Trooper and then with some experience picked up from road time, a good Sgt. To take him based on his resume and make him the director of the State Police is a mistake. There are many qualified troopers who have the military experience of this man and met the requirements to be a trooper. The head of his class at West Point, although impressive, is not what would qualify a person for this job.

Anyone who shit talks this guy has no clue about what this guy was doing in Iraq.

You don't fight guerrilla wars by walking around with a target on your back waiting for the guys to come find you. It takes knocking door to door, foot patrols, traffic stops, and detective work.

All of this in neighborhoods where everyone is legally allowed one automatic weapon, houses are rigged to blow on intruders, and the fuckers use our technology against us to alert their buddies when we're on our way.

Secondly, this guy isn't going to be making traffic stops on the Dan Ryan. He's a leader. He makes decisions, plans, and comes up with training objectives. That's being a leader. And the U.S. Army is the country's best leadership school.

Check yourselves and put things into perspective. I'd take an infantry captain over an FBI agent any day.

Hooah.

comments like this crack me up! The reason he was picked IN ADDITION TO his military experience was because he finished top of his class at Westpoint... Thats right... HE HAS A COLLEGE DEGREE! It is really fucking hilarious that all the grunts on this blog automatically assume because one has military experience he is qualified to be the police... Unless you believe a fucking monkey could do our jobs, that is a false assumption. The way I see it is any dumb fuck can join the military... Any dumb fuck can be awaken at 0530, screamed at, told what to do every minute of every day, take orders and point a gun and pull the trigger... not really brain surgery now is it? The military is a place to congregate for our country's under achieving flunkies! Sorry, grunts, but without a college degree that actually shows you can accomplish something ON YOUR OWN, that you can use your brain and that you actually have something going on in there, your military experience in this day in age is worthless! It PROVES NOTHING!!! So at least this guy has a good degree to go along with his experience... THAT is change I can believe in!

No offense to you either, but just because you wear a Chicago police uniform does not mean you are the police. Hard to define what makes one the police. Indeed, there is quite a bit of friction in Chicago's own ranks as to who is the police. In my view, most who are sworn are not the police. And by most, I mean about 80% on any given day.

A lot of the guys on my watch are former (and current) military, and I will tell you that I do notice some tactical differences in the way they work...good things. I myself was never in the military. However, it is my impression that the military is entirely different from any police department. This guy may have been outstanding at his job in Iraq, but you can't ignore the fact that at 29 years old he hasn't expeienced enough civilian life here as an adult. But, maybe he's Jody's son so I guess he doesn't need experience.

Who gives a f*ck! What does that have to do with running a several thousand person policing organization? Enough with the military expertise already. It didn't make me any better a police officer, and I've been promoted here. The military teaches you how to take orders and NOT think on your own. Policing REQUIRES you to think on your own without direct supervision. WTF already with the military BS. Kudos that he's a war hero, but it has nothing to do with being the police. And besides, he couldn't have been too sharp or he would have stayed in. Would have been a major in 2-3 years. Maybe retire as a bird colonel or even general. Must be a reject. Perfect for Illinois.

Gimme a break pal, 29 years old and a very SHORT career in the military don't mean shit when it comes to commanding the police. This kid has NO experience in the political arena of police management, nor will he ever have the experience of being the police.

And here's another thing I haven't seen brought to light here or with Weiss:

Neither one of these punk idiots are attorneys or otherwise trained in Illinois state law. Neither one of them has ever had the experience to APPLY state law or knows the legal boundaries surrounding the application of Illinois state laws nor managing people who DO have the knowledge of Illinois state laws.

I wanna know exactly who this kid's daddy is or who's pimping for his ass.... another Daley connection? Did this kid eat dinner at Obama's lately? The phone call came from somewhere to hire this kid and I wanna know where!

Ok gimme a friggin break! This little shit went into the army with no better than a bachelor's degree, was admitted into OCS, came out as a Lt. and within how long was upped to a Capt. and put in charge of a few tanks? BULLSHIT!!

If this kid's so fuckin' great and had been so instrumental in the Army that he rose up in rank to Capt. before he was even 30, why in the fuck isn't he still there going up the ranks? This kid was one of the fastest rising stars in the Army, but I guess that wasn't good enough eh? Couldn't stay there and make General one day. Had to leave the military during such a metetoric career. TO BECOME A FUCKING MORTGAGE BANKER no less. And then SURPRISE OF ALL SURPRISES he just get's chosen out of the blue to be made Director of Illinois State Police.

Just fuking WOW!! This little shit was being pandered to and given the free pass in the Army due to some unseen clout, decides the Army isn't big enough to hold all his vast talent so he decides to become a MORTGAGE BANKER????!!!! Then when that doesn't work out AFTER A FUCKING YEAR of doing that, he decides it's better to be a recruiter for the Illinois National Guard???!!!

THEN, since he has only a rudimentary college education, while trying to recruit kids into the National Guard he decides he better go to NIGHT SCHOOL to finish off that TOP NOTCH education he started so he could be a better Army recruiter.

AND THEN BAM!! Hey kid, your're super qualified to run the Illinois State Police. FUCKING BULLSHITT of all BULLSHIT!!!

This kid was TOLD to get out of the military and to get back to Illinois for a reason!!!!

The pathetic attempt to attach him into Illinois BY NAME ONLY by being a FUCKIN' RECRUITER has got to be one of the WORST attempts to legitimize this little shit I've seen in my life.

This little shit was given the free pass in the military with a bullshit degree, then was told he could make a faster unfettered meteoric rise outside the military and was promised a high profile job when he left.

This little shit was probably going to run into too much resistance from the many other clouted kids in the military and wasn't going to get to general fast enough for his dad's liking so one of his buddies in state government told him to get out and come over the Illinois where he could push this little shit up the ladder without so much hassle.

This little fucker is connected and we'd better find out where. This asshole Quinn just dropped his first ringer card in the public's face, now we know this jagoff is as corrupt as the one we just kicked out.

WE GOTTA FIND OUT WHO THIS LITTLE PUNK'S CONNECTION IS TO ILLINOIS POLITICS AND OUT HIM QUICK BEFORE HE GET'S ELECTED GOVERNOR BY THE TIME HE'S 30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Basically everyone just started calling Jon Monken in St. Charles," said the younger Jon E. Monken, who grew up in St. Charles, but now lives in the Wrigleyville neighborhood of Chicago.

Former Army Capt. Jonathon Monken is Gov. Patrick Quinn's choice to head the Illinois State Police.

Born in Mesa, Ariz., the younger Monken came to St. Charles with his family in 1986, when he was 6.

That makes the new director of a $400 million agency with hundreds of employees just 29 years old. "

I think he can take the 40 hour gun class, like coroner's investigators.

There is something really wrong with this appointment that I just cannot put my finger on.

Trent leaving in a hurry like he did signals either major health or legal troubles. If it is legal troubles, maybe there just is not anyone at ISP that can be trusted right this second and an outsider is being brought in like Weis was.

One would think Quinn could have found someone a little more seasoned though.

I wonder what is in store for the ISP? Are there multiple indictments in the wings there?

Unconfirmed reports are that Lisa Madigan was instrumental in having Trent removed. Seems like he refused to obey 2000 some expungement orders, and several hundred FOIA requests.

Wasn't Trent the guy that protected one of his LTs that had a chippie flying around the state with him being paid for by the state? Refused at first to release the expense reports that showed the criminal behavior of his LT, then refused to take any real disciplinary action against the guy when it came out.
