Poll Results

Is this a little better sampling than the FOP vote that "only" had 160 participants?

  • Do You, a Reader of the Second City Cop blog, have any confidence in the leadership of Jody Weis?

    No 91% 2323 Votes
    Yes 9% 224 Votes

Let's see...
  • about 16 times the FOP meeting totals;
  • 18% of the purported 13,500 - but 25% of the more realistic 10,000;
  • not quite unanimous, but definitely a landslide;
And we had a couple lines of code embedded in the poll that was supposed to limit voting to one per IP address so that it wouldn't get overwhelmed by repeaters, so it's reasonably reflective the readership.

UPDATE: The graphic is a mess. We're trying to fix it. You can still vote down a few posts or just CLICK HERE.

Let’s get this straight. The police take a no confidence vote in their leader. People are getting shot and killed mostly in minority areas of the city by minorities. Ceasefire is mostly a minority organization, which for the most part is useless. Father Flagler (sp?) and other reverends take kids out of school to demonstrate in Springfield for stricter gun laws. This is very confusing? They are trying to take away my gun? How are I and the rest of the good citizens of this city going to defend themselves? WTF people. No leadership anywhere in this city and IT’S THE GUNS FAULT. TOTAL INSANATY.

The biggest drain on society comes from the mopes in cook county, the stupidest laws come from cook county and strangely enough, the highest taxes in the nation come from no other than cook county. to anonymous talking about Chicago's population growth...

Chicago (the actual city, not the whole of Cook County) had just over 3 million people in 1980. In the 2000 census, there were just under 2.89 million people living in the city. When the 2010 Census figures are released, It may be even lower according to recent estimates.

In other words, since 1980 the population served by the Chicago Police Department has actually decreased by around 110,000 civilians. Ignoring all other factors, the Chicago Police Force should also have been reduced accordingly. Of course, it could be argued that there is more crime now than in 1980. I don't have easily identifiable statistics on that.

I also heard Weis on TV and Radio say the number of patrolmen was 8,000.

And if 8,000 is close to being correct, you know about 500 (maybe more) are house mice or suckups, scattered across 25 dist's, office staff's, administration spots. and units who would do anything to protect their spot.

That leaves us around 7,500 divided by 25 dist's = 300 per dist, divided by 3 watches = 100 per watch, minus 25% on days off, furlo, medical, time due, etc.,so we end up with 45 to 65 per shift (high end if low medical roll), which is barely enough to cover all the assignments, and special assignments that each dist. has.

And we know that each DC had his "Special Assignments" that he has to have a car assigned to (per the alderman or the ADS), and the building security issues.

And we know that the midnight shift is the least likely to be fully staffed and has the youngest officers who don't have the time to bid off that shift.

So we end up with 1 man cars, no wagons, 1 Sgt. on the street, totally undermanned watches, down cars by the dozens, and bad working conditions.

Working cops know this is so true!

But Weis does not see any of this, nor do most of our citizens who follow the mayor like lemmings.

Sorry for getting off track;

It was in a clip of him leaving a meeting (unknown location) and walking fast.

Maybe he is really telling the truth for once. Or maybe it was an un-intentional slip of the truth?

Ald. Burke said it was just a small number of officers and that in any organization, a small number of workers will not like the boss, trying to downplay the stats.

Shanks said about the same thing.

As a regular attendee of union meetings, the house was packed. The usual attendance is around 55 to 70.

We will never get 1,000 or more to show up, unless they are allowed to go while working with pay.

If we had 4,000 or 6,000 show up, the city would close down, and the meeting would have to be at the United Center. Maybe that's what we need to do, everyone go to a meeting on the same day?

We are not plumbers or electricians who only work days and can attend at night.

That's why we have a representative who is suppose to go and air our views and report back to each unit and watch.

The high attendance was a result of officers being tired of waiting for news on the contract negotiations, the supt. not having our backs, and working conditions in general, and not for free beer or pizza.

I'm done working for this city, I need my Grape Drink.

I've been on the job over 28 years, and I have heard the number 13,500 since day one. I don't know, what was the populous in 1981, 2 or 3 million?
-----------------------------------
The numbers from 1990 Census: 3,485,398 and 2000 Census:3,694,820show that the city gained 209,422 people during that span. Reliable estimates put the current city at around 3.8 to 3.9 million. If you use 3 million as the 1980 population total and the number of officers as 13,500 it equals 1 officer for about every 222 people. Extrapolating that ratio out to the estimate of 3.8 million
(3.8 million/222) you get 17,117. City population also ignores the the immense amount of people who travel into the city daily so figure between 70-200,000. There's no two ways about it, the department is under a plan to shrink the size and scope of police in Chicago.

O/T
Anyone else see the story on WGN this morning questioning whether Daley is ignoring the needs of the city as a whole in order to fix up spots for the IOC to see.

Dear Officers, I realize that I am interrupting comments regarding the Superintendent, I apologize, and will not wade into that discussion at this time.

This morning my family needed the assistance of the police, badly.

When you think it can only happen to other people, guess what, it can happen to anyone, at anytime, often without warning.

We called you fine men and women this morning and the response was overwhelming.

Within 3 minutes there there were
3 cars, and the cavalry was on the way, by the time the situation was resolved, there were 15 cars, beat cars, tact cars, a det. or two, the sgt. and even a car from neighborhood relations.

Now I know 16 gets a lot of grief on this site, but from what I observed today, and in the past, they were on the ball.

It was great and much appreciated.

We have tried to say thanks to everyone personally, but you never get to shake every hand, or look in every eye, so I came on here, to say thank you.

If I can ever repay the kindness, please feel free to call.

I am very glad Jody Weiss is the Superintendant of the Chicago Police Department. Unfortunately way too many police officers have been arrested and gone to prison for gross misconduct. Random thoughts here....I can certainly understand the "no confidence" vote with regard to Weis. Granted, he's a tool. But the real issue here with those of us who care about this Dept....is
DALEY. Who hired Weis? Who stuck Masters in there as "senior advisor" to Weis? Where has this dept. gone over the past year? It's fallen faster than the space shuttle Columbia. Daley should be ashamed, as should the public, that a once proud Dept. is now a complete and utter joke to the entire US. We as Dept. members should make sure we inform the public that even moreso than having an incompetent fool for a Supt., we have a Mayor who has shown over the past year that he is more than content to allow the men and women of this Dept. to go out and do their jobs with unacceptable equipment, and to work out of facilities in which his own police officers aren't secure. Shame on Daley...and shame on all of us, for believing that Weis is at the top of this bullshit. It may well be time for us to step up and conduct informational picketing to inform the public that Daley has permitted unaceptable conditions to become the norm here, and we simply AREN'T GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE. Time for a change here in Chicago politics too....We ARE a professional police dept., and it's time we had politicians here who think we're worth supporting so that we can actually go out into these dangerous pockets and DO OUR JOBS. Enough is enough!

If you have any idea of what the reward would be.

Aldermen: let private guards write tickets
March 19, 2009 6:57 PM | 1 Comment |
Two South Side aldermen are drafting an ordinance to allow private security firms to write minor citations now handled by sworn police officers, one of the aldermen said today.

Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) said private security firms have been hired by two commercial-district organizations in his ward and that of Ald. John Pope (10th). In the 9th Ward, armed guards for those firms already patrol 103rd Street from State Street to Corliss Avenue as well as Michigan Avenue between 100th and 116th Streets, he said.

look, I think this poll is better than the 160 that was taken before. But, I am sick of the dance! The city and jfed keep saying 13500. What is the exact number the city knows and so does our freakin union!! The fop must correct jfed and king daley everytime they spew a bs number! SCC you do a great job and I think its about time you demand that the fop tells the real number! Keep up the good work!!

The 160 were the FOP leadership and Unit Reps and Watch Reps overwhelmingly. Who else goes to Union Meetings?

The 160 represented many thousands more.

3/19/2009 11:48:00 AM

I believe you will see the population of the actual city has gone UP. Between illegals (who, yes, are counted, as the census helps determine a city's actual need for services) and young people who moved into the city right after college in the last ten years, I'd bet my next paycheck the number goes up.

Crime, however, HAS gone up and we do have numbers on that. With two generations having been raised with zero respect for authority or boundaries, it's clear that both property and violent crime have grown.

Add to that the fact that new categories of crime have cropped up. Who ever heard of identity theft 25 years ago? Who ever heard of criminals putting a 'For Sale' sign on someone else's vacant lot to make a quick ten grand down payment on property they didn't own? Have you EVER seen the amount of crime against the elderly and the youngest of children that we see now? Don't forget to factor in the crimes of desperation a poor economy breeds.

Not to mention, we are desperately shorthanded and have nowhere near the number of sworn (all the way up the ranks) the ivory tower claims we have.

Study ranks Illinois among worst for personal freedoms
March 10, 2009 11:11 AM |

If you like your personal freedom, Illinois is not for you. Chicago Bungalow shows that Illinois fared badly in a study by George Mason University's Mercatus Center. The study ranked American states on the level of economic, social and personal freedom.

Illinois ranked 29th for economic freedom, 42nd for overall freedom and 49th for personal freedom. Chicago Bungalow writes, "We all know that corruption costs the citizens of Illinois money, and lots of it. But is the government intrusiveness characteristic of Illinois Democrats also costing us our freedom and our ability to prosper?"

From WWW.chicagobreakingnews.com site "Pension Probe: Inspector eyes Daley ties"

I.G. Davis Hoffman has subpoenaed records from several city pension funds.

Including the Police pension fund.

They are examining all the business done with DV Urban Realty Partners, that's the firm owned by Davis and Vanecko (Daley's newphew)

Of course the reporter asks Police pension fund executive director John Gallagher (political Daley hack)about it.He would only say that DV Urban has only drawn $5 million of funds from the original $15 million commitment. At the end of last year that $5 million investment in DV is now valued at $3.5 million. He declined further comment.

NO SUPRISE THERE! We all knew it was a bad investment, but the sheep elected by us went along with it anyway because thats what Daley wanted.

At least now Mike Shields has our backs!

PIMPY? DUDE YOU'RE PIMPY! THE MAYOR THANKS ME? HOW ABOUT NOT BEING ARROGANT AND A JERK TO YOU FELLOW COPPERS? I'M SURE SOME WORK U'VE DONE CAN B VIEWED AS PIMPY! YOUR ATTITUDE IS PART OF THE PROBLEM ON THIS JOB! YOU'RE ATTITUDE IS PART OF THE REASON WE HAVE DISTRUST FROM THE AVERAGE JOE. WHY DON'T YOU PARK LEGALLY? ARE YOU CLAIMING TO BE ABOVE AND BEYOND? DISCRETION IS THE KEY HERE. IT'S OBVIOUS IT DIDN'T GO YOUR WAY ON THIS ONE SO JUST SUCK IT UP AT PAY THE TICKET. THE FOP AND OTHER STICKERS IS NOT A GURANTEED FREE RIDE. SURE LETS TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN BUT AT THE SAME TIME RESPECT THE OFFICER ON DUTY AND HIS/HER DECISION MAKING. YOU PARKED ILLEGALLY. MORAL OF THE STORY IS THAT YOU'RE PIMPY FOR CRYING ABOUT IT!

You are exactly whats wrong with this job. No one else takes care of us and now its gotten to the point where we dont even take care of each other. Who cares what the public thinks. You probably work the desk anyway honey. Any cop that knowingly writes another cop for some pimpy stuff is a punk. Out of all the cars to write tickets to that officer couldnt find one that wasnt the police. We do have discretion.

________________________________

The spot was legal jagoff. I said the ticket was pimpy. Parking on a hydrant, handicap spot, double parking, those aren't pimpy. Getting out your tape measure to check if your car is 13 inches from the curb, 29 ft from a stop sign, writing a ticket even though the signs are missing, those are what I call pimpy. I'm not saying we should cover up for cops who steal, beat their wives, drive drunk, etc. I wouldn't write anyone for what I got written for. We as residents of Chicago, police or not, give enough of our checks back to the city. If we're to the point where we can't even give each other a pass on BS parking tickets then this department truly is lost. The only thing we have left is each other, or at least it was.

Ouch...once again ending on a real zinger! What you just don't get is that its not that I think I'm "to cool" to write parkers. It's that not generating revenue is one of our, Chicago Police Officers, most immediate ways to show the mayor that we are not happy with his attitude towards us and our lack of a contract. In addition, the fact that we are so low on manpower is a real threat to all of us that are on the street. Not so much to a house mouse such as yourself. I know this is getting complex but try to wrap your mind around something that we used to consider each other. Brothers and Sisters. Not the boss's favorite, not the measly patrol unit, not the cool Tac guys. Just a bunch of people who took care of each other and weren't always looking out for themselves. Sure, there's always a few, but your breed has taken over the Dept. and the Dept. now sucks!!!
