Put Up or Shut Up

Quite possibly the most important event that will happen in many of our careers:
  • The Lodge has been backed into a corner and will participate in informational picketing on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 11:00 am.

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution assures all citizens the free exercise of the freedom of speech, assembly, and the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Persons on the public way have a right to express their views and beliefs orally or through the use of signs. These protections apply to our members exercise of their First Amendment Rights as long as they act in a law abiding manner.

While we aren't completely happy with the timing and the admission by the FOP President that the Olympic Committee won't be around to observe and enjoy the festivities, it's what we have at the moment and the moment must be seized.

Go to the link. Print out the attached flyer. If you're off, show up. If you're out of court, swing by, especially anyone with a 9am call at Traffic Court - you're already downtown. If you can get time, burn the day.

Anything less than full buses will rightly be seen as a failure.

A couple of things concerning Thursday’s informational picketing for what they’re worth. I was assigned in 001 for several years and have been assigned to well over 100 of these types of actions so I know a few things about them but it’s ultimately up to you.

First, if you’re not going to make it, no more posts about “hey my brothers and sisters in blue I can’t make it because…but I’m with you in spirit”. Either you’re with us or against us, PERIOD! I know some people have to work that day, including those that will be assigned to the event, but you have nothing to say about the event unless you’re going to be there.

Second, no guns, don’t get jammed up over this. I can’t fathom anyone actually getting pinched but it could lead to a C.R., why give the department any ammo. It is against the law to have a gun at any picket line. I don’t have the statute handy but you can find it.

Third, it is not us against the people assigned to the event so don’t get caught up in the moment and fault the officers and supervisors that are assigned to it, even those you can’t stand. Also, there could be counter-demonstrators that will try to disrupt the event. They are the responsibility of the people assigned to the event, don’t get trapped into any type of discussion, debate, etc… it will be taped by them and it will be edited in a manner that makes you look like a buffoon.

Fourth, common sense here, there will be cameras everywhere and I’m sure even in use by the department and/or other city and government agencies. Don’t do or say anything that will distract from the true meaning of this event. The city utilizes cameras at almost all demonstrations now and to not use them here would open the door for huge legal ramifications.

There will bee all kinds of rumors between now and Thursday and attempts to divide us, don’t let it happen. I haven’t heard anything from any of the PBPA units yet, but I hope they get on board. I am a member of one of them and will be there whether or not they officially sanction this action.

I can’t wait to see the turnout, those that were there in 2000 should remember what a great turnout we had then, enough to circle the hall. Bring friends and family, the more the merrier. Anything small in numbers and we may as well grab our ankles.

P.S. Circle April 15th on your calendar for the Chicago Tea Party.

This is our chance. You guys that come here and bitch and moan while hiding behind a keyboard, now's the time to come out of the closet and do something. There should be THOUSANDS od Officers at this. And it shouldn't stop at City Hall. We should have buses on standby following the IOC wherever they go. Day and night. FOP, don't let this be a one hour picket line. Schedule times and locations for Officers to picket from 0800-2200. Let the IOC and the world see how daley treats the cities employees. Let them know that if they chose Chicago and Daley doesn't start negotiating fairly, that the Police will not be there when the time comes. We should have informational picketing at the hotels where the IOC will be staying, at City Hall, at the various locations that they will be inspecting. We should become their shadows. FOP, Officers, this is our chance. Don't fuck it up!

Well this is what we've been insisting upon, so now lets back up all of the tough talk with a little action. I'm scheduled to work but have put in for time due so I can participate. I cannot continue to complain about the Supt, the crook, Mayor Daley, or the F O P, and then not take the time to show up for such an important event at such a critical time. We are paying more for benefits and getting less in return. Our pension funds have tanked, and they are threatening to overhaul or switch to a two-tier pension. Officers are at risk due to manpower shortages, and despite what were being told/sold, clout still rules the chicago police department. In fact Daley has already placed his civilians puppets in place so he can control a department he knows nothing about, its working great so far don't you think? O'keefe, Ladner, Masters, these people don't have a clue, paper pushers running a quasi Military organization. I am sick of the corruption in this city, this county, this state. I am sick of the Democratic Machine, Pay to Play, and the blatant disregard by the Inspector General, Patrick Fitzgerald, and all those charged with overseeing this mess. Everyone gets a piece of the pie to keep them quite, Jessie, the reverend, Hispanic Democratic Org., the Alderman, everyone. I dont want a piece of the pie, I want what is fair, I want what was promised to me when I came on the job. I dont want to join their elite club, I want a fair contract with a reasonable cost of living increase not offset by benefit cost increases. I dont want to be meritoriously promoted into the upper eschelon of kiss asses, I just want an equal opportunity to move up in salary to care for my family and our needs. I'm sorry, I could go on and on but I will spare you the rest. All this to say I will be there April 2nd, walking beside my co-workers who are not afraid to stand up for what is right.

I guess I look at it this way, when the shit hits the fan, troops lineup and the crowd sees maybe 20 officers in line, what do you think?
But the crowd sees 150 plus...?? Looks like they mean business.

For once all the whining and crying should be put in the public view. We are unhappy. We are at the lowest point in morale. If we can't make a showing of at least 1000-2000 coppers out there, then it is time for all to quit bitching and just bend over. We have the one chance to show how we feel. Don't rely on someone else to do it. I have heard numerous coppers taking time to be there. I hope everyone who wanted the FOP to organize this, which they did, to be out there. Let's show the city and media we are truly pissed off. It is only an hour and a half. Not all day. Just enough time to make a strong showing and make a major statement to the mayor and J-fed. J-Fed and Daley played down the no confidence vote. Let's show them something they can't play down in the press. For once let's show how fed up we are. Let's have a massive show of force. Every bus should be filled to the max. Maybe even the need for extra transportation. This is our shot, let's not blow it. If you don't show, then quit the whining. This is a major event to show we are one. Let's make a show like one never done before.

I am not picketing.

I am not asking for citizens' support in my labor struggles. The people who live in this city don't give a rat's ass about your life let alone your pay. It's embarrassing to publicly ask the people in this city to support us when we all know they don't and never will.

If I could strike I would, but I can't, so just send this contract to arbitration. I support the FOP. Up to now I've been satisified with the contracts they have obtained.

I used to think this job was something more than a job, but it isn't. It's just a job. I go, I do whatever I have to at the time, and then I go home. I used to do a little extra, maybe a little more than I should have, but I don't anymore.

I'll either finish my 20 and leave or flat out quit if I get a better offer somewhere else.

Picket all you want. Mayor Daley, the aldermen, and the citizens will NEVER support you and I really don't care if they ever do. It's humiliating to even ask after all they have all done to ruin this department.

Maybe the FOP can print up some flyers to be handed out to passing citizens about the recent news storys of the Mayors nephew stealing from the police pension fund, or the city losing the comp time ruling but ignoring the judges orders, a paragraph to remind everyone every city union but the police has recieved a contract with good raises, a lttle mention of the alderman voting themselves and their staffs nice raises, the news storys about how Mayor Daley broke the law in hiring JFRAUD (he was not one of the 3 fialist chosen by the police board as the law requires) a copy of the ethics ordinance and that mayor Daley ignores it and does not list all the gifts he is given or the free air travel he recieves. Maybe a quick mention of how merit promotions are made and that the city refuses to define what merit is. Maybe a few examples of merit Ald carothers brother's two merit promotions come to mind. Inform the citizens of Chicago and we will get some to join our cause, (some will hate us no matter what forget abut them and ignore them)

I have to agree with the over-under at around 400. It's sad but true. I work in 012 and unfortunately it didnt seem like alot of the officers from there seemed interested in going. I cant say it suprised me because its a nonworking district. The sentiment around the station seems to be that the picketing is a waste of time and will accomplish nothing. I hope that I'm wrong and thousands of officers show up but I have a bad feeling that the turnout will be small.
I attended the last info. picketing at city hall. There were maybe 200 officers there. It was a sad showing by the cpd. I did not go on the trip to Iowa for the Mette hearing but I did attend his benefit at the FOP and I'm sad to say that was a poorly attended event as well. Its unfortunate but when it comes to Cpd were more bark than bite.

A massive turnout is needed.

Also it needs to remain peaceful. In the 90's the NYPD protested a few times before Rudy G became Mayor and there were near riots with off duty guys fighting with on duty guys. I think some alcohol was involved.

Remember this isn't the SSIrish Parade. Show up,keep it clean, go home or back to work.

This will drive Daley nutz. Maybe hold out up some massive subpoenas with the name of his son and nephew on them.

He might get so pissed he tries to privatize the department. Give a no bid contract to some mobbed up friend of his from the old neighborhood.

I would love to see Mrs. Strouse, the mother of the late Officer Brian Timothy Strouse, be given a position of honor among us in this, our latest struggle for a fair contract. She had the unimaginable strength to confront Daley face to face at her son’s funeral in 2001 about the lack of a contract the last time.

I wish she could come and I would be honored if she did.

Can someone who knows her or the family reach out and see if this is possible?

It is past time for a Vote of NO CONFIDENCE in FOP President Mark Donohue. He is obviously in bed with the Daley's, and does NOT represent the rank-and-file officers of the CPD to the best of his abilities. It is outrageous that the picketing will take place at a time other than when the U.S. Olympic Committee is here, for MAXIMUM effect to occur. This guy is full of crap up to his eyeballs, and is obviously jockying for a sweet job via Daley, when he retires. I request at this time, that a Vote by Lodge 7 members be tallied for a NO CONFIDENCE VOTE against President Mark Donohue, who is as phony as a 3 dollar bill.

I guarantee that when we don’t get the Olympics here, (It’s not like we had a snowball’s chance in hell to get it anyway) fuckface Daley will place ALL of the blame on us because he’s already planting the seed to do it:

It is "unfair" for police to try to link their pay dispute to Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Olympics, Mayor Richard Daley said Saturday.

Maybe you should have thought about this oh let’s say… two years ago. Maybe you were just too fucking stupid to realize that fucking with the police and fire’s contract during an Olympic bid is plain old dumb. Get a haircut and take a shower for cripes sake. Ohh yea, GFY too.

I think the FLOP is doing this quietly. They need to make more noise about getting the word out for everyone to hear.
HAVE SOME MORE BALLS FOP!
AND ITS TIME FOR US TO SHOW OURS!

3/28/2009 10:07:00 AM

The FOP is doing this somewhat quietly because if there is not a significant presence the FOP will look as though they lack unity. It is up to each of us to tell one friend then another then another....

I've already talked to people about this event. Many are comming and some make really lame excuses. When FOP asks people to come out to show their faces for such events do what you can to get up off your ass and show your face. Even if is just for a bit. They are providing the transportation (on worries about gas, parking etc.)

Make it a gathering with some of your buddies. Car pool, grab something to eat and AFTERWARD grab a couple of cold ones. Do it afterward so we can avoid the potential of one or two of us making the rest look like asses.

I've bneen to similar rallies in the past and it is great to see some unity. If approached by the press, think before you speak.

Everyone is hurting these days and may people are hurting more then we are. That does not mean that we don't deserve a fair raise. We are not asking for the world.

God bless and everyone stay safe.

This is the first shot fired.

If it rises to the level of being a very loud one, then the 'shock and awe' following shots can be counted on to be fired.

It's like when you start a small ball of snow rolling from the top of a hill, as it picks up speed, and more snow, by the time it reaches the bottom of the hill, it's become big enough to knock you down and roll right over you.

We'll see if this first shot will be loud enough to be impossible to ignore.

When the economy was good I mean great and the revenue was pouring in Chicago years past the city still continued to lowball the Chiacgo Police Department, so what was their excuse then? Am I happy and feel priveledged to have a job in this day and age? Yes Iam and so are alot of others.....but if you think Iam gonna just sit back and take it in the gut again time after time whilst the people in charge of this city continue to reap in the $$ you are sadly mistaken. From G.O. 98-10, Addendum 2.

Members will not:
1. wear the prescribed star/badge, photo identification card, cap
shield/insignia or any identifiable uniform garment while off duty unless
authorized by the Superintendent of Police.

So unless you think he's behind everyone on this, or something...maybe you'd want to wear your own clothes instead of setting yourself up & giving ammunition for easy retribution.

-This week I watched 4 city workers outside of my office building for 1 1/2 days sitting in their cars, reading the newspaper, drinking coffee and talking on cell phones. I do know that the sewer/pot hole in front of the building had been dug up early in the week. Were they waiting for equipment? Don't know but what a waste. And YOU think these city workers are underpaid? In my opinion, the women and men of the CPD that selfishly put their lives on the line for citizens like YOU and me, who they don't even know, each and every day of their lives, to protect US, DESERVE a pay raise.

Picket all you want. Mayor Daley, the aldermen, and the citizens will NEVER support you and I really don't care if they ever do. It's humiliating to even ask after all they have all done to ruin this department.

-Wow. Please do not assume ALL citizens are not supportive. We're out there. Believe me, we are. We're your family and your friends.

Wish I could be at the rally to show my citizen support but cannot take the day off work.

God bless. Proud sister of CPO, and a citizen.

Daley: Cop union 'unfair' to Olympic bid

March 28, 2009 7:00 PM
UPDATED STORY

It is "unfair" for police to try to link their pay dispute to Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Olympics, Mayor Richard Daley said Saturday.

Police union members unhappy with contract negotiations say they will picket City Hall on Thursday--the same day the International Olympic Committee's evaluation team arrives in Chicago.

"If everybody has a complaint about something else, it has nothing to do with 2016," the mayor said. "It's really unfair because the Olympics is bigger than Mayor Daley. It's bigger than the police or fire union, all these unions. It's bigger than them.

"This is about the vision of the city. This is about transforming the city. This is something that other cities are fighting for."
---

and now it is also linked to what we are fighting for, want to talk about fair Mr. Mayor? Better not you would lose.

Want there to be no picketing this Thursday? Then send your contract team into 24 hour negotiations with the mandate to settle the thing.

Better hurry.

I'm amazed and appalled at what those men had to go through & how they got through it all... THEY HAD EACH OTHERS BACKS!

Let's show daley & the aldercreatures, the rev'runs, the running dog media, j-fed & his federal hack carpetbaggers and the "we hope you fail" naysaying citizenry what a truly pissed-off police department we are.

We are free & grown men according to the U.S. Constitution!

WHY CALL CFD NOW WHAT ABOUT WHEN WE NEEDED YOU GUYS ON FEB. 14 1980

3/28/2009 03:11:00 PM
---

"On February 14th, 1980, the mood of Local 2 Firefighters and paramedics was very somber throughout the department knowing that in just a few minutes Union members would be staging a strike. At 0515 hours they walked out. This was a time when each person had to evaluate their own situation and make a decision that would affect them for the rest of their lives - "Do I Walk or Do I Stay?" They walked out at 0515 and at many fire houses strike signs hadn't even been delivered yet. Local 2 Member Ed Tetzner said to one news channel, "The lines have been drawn in the sand, we asked and asked for the city to meet with our Union. We were promised a contract from the Mayor, but all we got were broken promises. Well for one thing, there are three men on the back step of a garbage truck in Chicago, and only two men on the back step of a Fire Engine. Second of all, we don't have self-contained breathing apparatuses for the firefighter who risks his life like in many other cities in this country. Our equipment is junk, our fire clothes are shabby and leak water, there are no radios for communication and I could go on and on. But I will now help my brother Firefighters get a barrel, and we will light a fire."
---

The firefighters went out in 1980 because their equipment was junk and the city broke promises made to them and bargained in bad faith. Sound familiar?

Police were ordered to firehouses across the city to protect them and many firefighters resented that police crossed their picket lines and didn't openly support their strike.

The CPD was also without a contract in 1980. In 1980 the Chicago Police had yet to sign their first contact with the city. Not wanting to repeat what happened with Chicago Firefighters, the City of Chicago and the FOP signed their first contract on August 19, 1981. At that time police loved Jane Byrne and firefighters hated her.

So there is some precedence for the CFD not supporting us in labor disputes. Hopefully the animosity has passed as we both now have a common adversary, Richard M. Daley.

If you ever happen to see a poster advertising a CFD retirement party or event, look for the small barrel logo in one of the lower corners of the poster.

That stands for The Brotherhood of the Barrel, meaning the barrels with a wood fire which the striking firefighters stood around to keep warm on the picket lines during the strike.

It also means that scabs, those who crossed the picket lines or who took firefighter jobs during the strike are not welcome at the event. It continues to this day.
