More OT Money?

  • Grants from the federal stimulus package will give the Chicago Police Department an extra $20 million to spend on overtime for officers and new equipment in the coming months, according to a police spokesman.

The funds come at an opportune time as crime typically increases with the temperatures, but critics feel the extra cash should be spent on hiring new officers instead of paying an already strained force to work additional hours.

"Staffing is always a problem," said Mark P. Donahue, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge 7. "It's only gotten worse since last January."

What this says to us is no hiring for a long time.

Big deal. The OT will be like the Airport where it is only old timers that don't need the money or clout babies. Those of use that really could use the money won't get it.

Yawn.

the twenty million is going for swine flu masks and kits for the beat cars-- also heard the lock up guys will look like they are on an asbestos removal team to avoid getting the swine flu. why do they blame this shit on the poor pig-- why not blame it on the guy who stuck his finger up the pig's butt and then shook someone's hand..

Aren't we already budgeted for 13,500 officers? Hmm, where do you suppose that money is going? Someone may want to do some "investigative reporting" on that. Oh wait, that would require some in depth reporting and a spine. Carry on. Nothing to see here people.

No more B.S. from the first W.C. about a late arrest given to me by incompetent dispatchers and supervisors who do not listen to the radio and fail to assign the job to a late car. Do what any honorable P.O. would do HIT THE MONEY BOX!!!!.

P.S. MAKE EM PAY!!!! For 20 Mil in OT

Just wait until the real deal occurs. This pseudo pandemic is nothing but an opportunity for Rahm/Obama to shine and look like they are on top of things.

As Rahm stated, "never let a perfectly good crisis go to waste".

When the real deal occurs in Chicago, the world will see how undermanned and unprepared we truly are.

$11 million of the $20 million is going to buy 238 new police vehicles and 543 in-car cameras.

I'll say it again. Never make a traffic stop with a camera. Read the general order on what you must say (the tactical greeting) during a traffic stop. This order was made six to nine months ago. So if someone beefs about anything, they look at the video and odds are pretty good you didn't follow the tactical greeting and IAD gets u for that. I like the cameras. Makes work a lot easier by not doing as much. Same as the Supreme Court ruling on searching. Life is good.

Can we use the money to get a new WC in 4 on midnights? The former Captain demoted to Lt. Roberts is making everyone miserable. This man is why this job sucks. J/O had beat car pick up his kid from his house and put him in lock up to teach him a lesson.

Is there anything from 35th St in regards to the "pandemic" other than a few sheets of common sense information they passed out?

What about something the troops can use:

Gloves?
Masks?
10 Foot Poles?
Decontamination Spray?
Quarantine tape?

Oh yeah...Flame throwers!

Eeeeek....Sorry about that comment about Flame Throwers, SCC! I've been playing too much Call of Duty - World At War!

================================

Quit bitching because you don't have the time on the job to get Airport Special. Us old farts have expenses too and we (like you) haven't had a raise in a while.

You have many more opportunities for extra money than us old farts ever had. You can work at Obama's house, work the CTA, work at a school, housing, etc.

Try making some arrests and writing tickets so you can go to court.

If you make DUI arrests they'll throw OT at you and you make it twice when you go to court out of key on motions, hearings, etc.

Quit complaining, I'll take my two days a month at the airport until I retire, maybe then you'll be able to get it then.

Until then, Up Yours.

You are one very paranoid person.

I have been saved twice from a beef because of a camera.

I never use the tactical greeting, but I am polite and courteous (until that isn't prudent)

I had one IAD officer comment (positively) about the choice of music on the radio during the stop. No discipline for that either.

IAD won't hang you on an innocent mistake or a minor violation.

You are one of those who won't do work and will seek any excuse not to do it.

It may be cheaper/more expedient in the short run to get cops to work O.T. at time at time-and-a-half rather than hire new cops if the Feds are picking up the bill.

They will not have to be trained at great expense. They are available immediately and when no longer needed can just be dismissed.

And, most importantly, there are no pension and insurance costs to the city.

Stay safe, if we don't have more police, we will have more criminals.

Dispatch: "Person shot 80th and xxxxx", anyone want to check that out?

Silence.

x10: Squad, did you give that person shot to anyone?

Dispatch: No, I (long pause looking over her board) don't have any cars.

x10: o.k.

Turned out to be bona fide. x10 finds crime scene, then plays hell trying to get a car to secure it, still no paper car.

How are we at full strength?

yeah...the Lt from for also left a note for the visiting watch commander to discipline any officer who didn't say here immediately when their name was called during roll call. He is a merit promotion who should have been fired for the shit he pulled when he was a captain.

Relax KID, you can work all the Special you want in Housing, or CTA; just like us OLD TIMERS who don't need the money did, for decades, before the Airport detail came along. You are obviously one of the new Cry-baby Police we now are stuck with, in the once Real Police Department. Too Bad, so Sad for poor little YOU, Boo-Hoo, Boo- Hoo, What can you Do????. Maybe Obama will give you some free money, try writing him a letter and explain how ROUGH you have it, cry-baby ...

The overtime will be for all special events downtown, and a few throughout the City, PR fest, Bud Billiken, etc. It will be assigned on a lottery basis, and not be time and 1/2. This will allow more officers to work it. It will also include a Lt. and Sgt picked by the soon to be the new head of the detail unit.
