Problem Gets Bigger

  • An off-duty Chicago Police detective charged with killing two men in a drunken-driving crash has been involved in other serious wrecks, including one not far from the scene of Friday’s fatal collision on the Dan Ryan Expy. and another that injured two police officers.

  • [...] other accidents include a collision with a Chicago Police car on the South Side.
Expect more of this to bubble to the surface.

we in 009 know all about this detective when he hit one of our own. stood there not saying anything, never apologized. next night was at the bar telling his buddies about it and laughing. one of the officers he it has numerous family members on the job and it trickled back to the officer and family about his lack of remorse. I believe the officer sued him but not exactly sure.

It was only a matter of time before this arrogant prick killed somebody. It's hard to have pity for a guy who didn't count his blessings and quit drinking after having two prior crashes.

Good riddance!

Off duty Chicago Police Officer gets awoken at 0430 by his eight year old daughter. She is crying. She tells her father that a car in the street is hitting other cars and is now stuck on the parkway after hitting a tree. The father puts on his pants, grabs his gun and star and runs outside to find his neighbors already surrounding the vehicle as it attempts to flee. The driver, a female is wasted, completely intoxicated on alcohol and who knows what else. She hit a car on the Edens exway and then struck several other vehicles and fixed objects in my neighborhood while attempting to flee from original accident. The Cops from 017 show up on scene call for an ambulance for the intoxicated driver, do their lengthy accident report and proceed to fuck the entire thing up. First they don't give people the proper copies of accident report with the offenders vehicle and insurance info(unit 1). Now the neighbors have to make phone calls and special trips to 017 for this information. My one neighbor is told by the desk in 017 that the information is not available and she will have to go to 35th/Michigan to request a copy. This is 5 hours after the accident. This person hit her parked car. Shouldn't she atleast get a copy of the off. insurance info? Secondly the coppers wrote tickets to this drunk bitch but never DUI'd her. She signed herself out at the hospital and was back in my neiborhood two hours later MF'ing my neighbors whose vehicles she struck in her drunken stooper. Thank God she didn't hurt someone seriously, this time. Thanks to 017 coppers on Midnights and their supervisors she will be back on the streets soon. I only hope she makes her next rampage thru their neighborhood. It's hard to tell my neighbors how coppers need a raise and better contract when this is the kind of service that is provided to them in the highest property taxed area in the city.

Signed an embarrassed P.O.

Capt. on midnights in 17 punishes p.o.s that make arrests, especially 501's. The desk, run by a p.o. and sgt Kski, has no idea how to process a DUI. I have had three cases dropped in the last 6 months because a transmittal was not sent. I AM NOT EXAGGERATING! I was told this watch was known for the incompetence of its desk. I am sure they will meet and exceed the expectations of their supervisors on 1st watch when it comes time for meritorious.

Way, Way, WAY too many drunk arrogant assholes who think they can do whatever they want, drink as much as they want, drive when they want and hit and skip when they want and then all they have to do is flash the button and the brotherhood will close ranks and make it all right.

Too goddamn fuckng bad. What if the dead were a PO's family? What then? Keep quiet? Hush hush?

Already the wheels of clout are turning trying to get this fixed. I hope it doesn't work. People like this deserve to be held accountable for their actions. The last copper to kill two while on a drunken binge tried the motion to fix.

The family and public outcry was too much and he got indicted on two counts of reckless homicide. This guy has already been charged with that. But this is Chicago, County of Cook after all. We'll see if justice prevails by the length of sentence.

These things are easy to prevent, so easy. Damn near impossible to repair the damage alter.

It's a new day. Don't drive drunk. Bye bye job, bye bye freedom. Way, Way, WAY too many cops drive drunk. Don't do it. Trick ass bitches indeed. Drunken fucking asshole and those who protect them, go fuck yourselves.

I am amazed that you get on here and start flaming away when this guy should have been shit canned for slamming into a squad and injuring two cops. Really, if a guy like that keeps getting away with it perhaps a call to a reporter might get some results that protective cops won't get.

It is a terrible tragedy for all parties involved.

Alcohol is a depressant and should be classified as a drug. Unfortunately, the alcohol industry has enough political pull (campaign contributions) with our legislature to prevent this classification from occuring. Alcohol is the only depressant I know of that doesn't have directions for its proper use. Some may say drunk drivers should use better judgement. This is true, but the first thing that occurs to a person drinking alcohol is their judgement is reduced; they're not aware they're over the legal limit. How many of us have heard in the past, "I'm just a little bit drunk". A little bit drunk is like a little bit pregnant-you're there. If you're driving a motor vehicle and kill someone, you're facing years of prison.

If the alcohol industry wants to significantly reduce the number of alcohol related fatalies in this country, they must be willing to educate consumers in the use of their product. This remedy is: Place a label with a graph on the back of every beer can/bottle. The label shows a graph indicating your body weight and the number of alcoholic drinks consumed in a certain period of time. It won't stop all the DUIs from occuring, but it's sure better than, "Please drink responsibly". Once someone starts drinking, their judgement along with their thought of resposibility are reduced. A long time ago, I spoke to the head of A.A.I.M.; she said the alochol industry would fight this legislation to their final dollar.

13,000 drivers a year are killed on the nations roads because of DUI. That's three times the rate of people murdered by firearms. You think the alcohol industry would like to be more responsible with their product. But, because of the money involved, they don't want to see a drop in sales.

Someday the lawyers are going to go after the liquor industry the same way they went after the cigarette industry.

SCC,

Please report this:

HIRING SCANDAL:
Driver in Sanchez trial gets DUI

A city truck driver who recently testified in the corruption trial of former Streets and Sanitation boss Al Sanchez has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. State Police arrested Denise Alcantar Cortez on April 2, Streets and Sanitation spokesman Matt Smith said Saturday. Details of the arrest were not immediately available. Cortez, who got her job with the city after doing political work for the Hispanic Democratic Organization, has been disciplined for five work accidents, including one that seriously injured a co-worker who later died. Cortez reported to work after her arrest, but is now on "indefinite, unpaid status," Smith said.

This HDO hack was responsible for killing a coworker and crashing five times at work. SHe testifies in the Snachez trial and all is good. Now she gets a DUI from the ISP and they are ripping on coppers? Where is the front page headlines on this?

DOUBLE STANDARD!

CPD beat officers were never really involved in making DUI arrests. Don't know if it's lack of training or interest. Word of caution: I was a suburban officer for over 30 years and was taught from day one, "Cover Your Ass." One night we ended up with a car that drove into a river, pregnant teenage passenger was killed. Driver had a traffic ticket written on his person written by a CPD officer 30 minutes prior to this accident, for a red light. This driver was falling down drunk. Nothing came of him not doing his job, and I doubt he ever felt anything for the dead girl or her unborn child either.

12:39am.

You are a genius. The REAL problem here is people talking about this guys past vehicle related issues and NOT the actual drinking and running into other cars and people.

You, sir, are a genius. At least two merit promotions await.

The best disinfectant is sunshine. The problems of the department and individual officers need to be discussed openly. It is ignoring this guy's drinking issues that indirectly led to these two needless deaths.

Talking about the series of events that led to this and the corrupt culture of cronyism that exists among some members of the department and city government MIGHT help prevent an incident like this in the future.

When he hit the police car he should have been disciplined and given the choice between civilian life or being put in a program for problem drinkers.

As for the idea that we all have stuff we want to keep quiet you are absolutely correct. In my case none of it involves drunk driving or hitting on duty police cars with my personal vehicle.

In fact I'll let out my most shameful secret right here. I'm distantly related to the mayor. Sniffle, I'm so ashamed. I've never met him though so that should count for something. I've also never been meritcloutoriously promoted or had sex with another man's wife. Hell, I hardly have sex with my own wife.

Ok, train wreck that was inevitable and just plain sucks and is nobody's fault but his. However, all these people who are saying they aren't surprised or the people who are saying keep your mouths shut, I have some advice:

Do not talk to everyone else about it, talk to the man who is the problem. This guy was obviously an alcoholic and lots of people knew about it.

It's his fault, but how about talking to him about it before he fucks things up for everybody instead of talking to everyone else about what an asshole he is.

Just a thought, let's all try and have enough courage to stand up and at least try to talk to the next guy we think has the potential to do this before he does.

I know we all drink to help us through this job, but alcoholism is serious and people who go through it need to be called out and helped.

Not passing blame, just hoping things can be different next time.

You must be one of the "clout babies" who's trying to save his priveledged lifestyle. Sorry, but that turkey won't fly anymore. Screw you and your clout. Nobody was calling the media or IAD and you know it. We're just sick of assholes like this who make us look like shit.

This dumbass detective was given multiple chances to straigten out his act. But he didn't feel the need to, because he was being taken care of by people in high places. Because of that, two innocent people died a horrible death.

If any copper worth his salt had a similar incident tossed into their lap by a member of another department they would handle it by the book, just as ISP is doing. You can only do so much for a fellow copper. This guy screwed no one but himself, and ended the lives of two innocent people by his reckless actions. You sound pretty pissed off, but let me tell you, your comments pissed me off. First, if you think that this shit wasn't coming out without the blog, you're a moron. These were all documented accidents. Only his intoxication is left out of the reports but who isn't going to start looking into those crashes.

People are talking here because this jerk was ALLOWED to continue to drink and drive until he killed two people! You may not think these two kids matter and maybe no one on this blog knew them, but they mattered to their families. And it could have been anyone's family who was affected. Could even have been an off-duty PO who was killed. Apparently, that doesn't matter to you.

So now that I'm pissed let me tell you how these families CAN sue the dept. and win. If the department has a practice of not disciplining POs for DUIs, as is clearly the case, then the practice can be deemed to be a policy of the department.

The logic goes that getting away with drunk driving because you are a PO sends the message that you can drive drunk because there is no consequence to you for doing it. Shit, if you can rear-end two POs in a f***ing squad car and get away with it, why wouldn't you think you're invincible. The rules don't apply to you!

Personally, I'd like to see POs thinking about the consequences before they drink and drive. Maybe then we wouldn't have to deal with the public hating us for thinking that we can do anything we want and get away with it. And maybe we'd stop sending POs to prison for reckless homicide and ruining their lives and the lives of their familes.

People if you know anything about alcoholism you'd know that letting POs get away with this shit does not help them in the long run. Your giving them a break enables them to continue and passes on an opportunity to for them to be forced to get the help they need. Believe me, they aren't walking away from the break you gave them grateful and thinking that they better get some help before they actually get into trouble. All you've done is to tell them that they are special and can do whatever the hell they want.

Whoever let this guy get away with this shit, I hope you feel the death of these two kids on your soul this Easter Sunday.

When you have juice, the rules don't apply to you. I arrested a drunken local politician that I didn't recognize once. A supervisor ripped up my paperwork, told me to drive him home and literally put him in his bed like a three year old. I didn't know who he was.

I once took a day for starting my car without a seatbelt on. They told me "I was in control of my vehicle" even though I had not left the lot and entered parking.

This Furgoli thing happened off duty so its not going to cost the city money, but it dramatically represents the double standard disciplinary system we have to endure.

Here is a most probable scenario for the crash on the Dan Ryan for all of you whining assholes both on and off the PD. This might give you something to think about.

Yes the officer had something to drink when two taggers, who are applauded as "artist", are driving at 0330 hrs. on the Ryan. They stop dead in an active driving lane to reach out the window to do some artsy-craftsy shit on the wall of the highway. 4/12/2009 03:43:00 PM"

I don't understand how the past of either victim is relevant. They could have been criminals just returning from a bank heist, it doesn't change what happened. These two young men pulled over, presumably to change a tire, and would rear-ended by an off duty officer driving under the influence.

I almost get the impression from some sympathetic to this officer that people want these kids to have checkered past, as almost to say, "see, these guys were low lives -- nothing was lost."

What this story teaches me, other than the obvious message of drinking and driving, is NEVER to pull over to the side of an expressway to fix a car unless necessary. If I can drive, I don't care if the rims are shooting up sparks I'll pull to the right with my hazards on and drive slowly. Too many people seem to be killed yearly changing tires, or otherwise fixing other car-related issues on the expressway. I'll take the extra thousands dollars in costs over my life, or someone elses, anyday.

4/12/2009 09:23:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know if those kids stopped to tag or what. If that is true..what a shame to go so tragically for something so useless.

I don't like that the media referenced the "tagger" as an "artist". "Tagging" is graffiti (sp) and is blatant disrespect for public and private property that costs thousands of dollars to remove.

And I'm not talking about just coppers. EVERYBODY. Part of the problem is people don't understand just what it takes to be impaired. The state has so many bullshit programs out there. Why not try doing something proactive on time. Send someone out to bars and have people blow before they leave to let them see just how drunk they are. And I don't mean idiots that can't walk. No we don't. I am not a drinker but I can see how this job could drive the weak to it. Drinking never helps or fixes anything and it wont make your problems go away, you have to deal with it by being strong and by being an adult. As for the detective, I bet he wishes he dealt with his daemons a different way now but it's too late for him. The best we can do is learn from his mistake and not make the same one. I know that cops don't like to ask for help and alcoholic cops are even worse. Do something now before this becomes you!

Yes the officer had something to drink when two taggers, who are applauded as "artist", are driving at 0330 hrs. on the Ryan. They stop dead in an active driving lane to reach out the window to do some artsy-craftsy shit on the wall of the highway. As they are creating admiring their work along comes the officer who did not give the right of way to the taggers and hit them. Now the spray paint cans esplode and the two ILLEGAL TAGGERS were burnt.
Can it be determined that the TAGGERS had a flat tire of was that just speculation by some whiney whore liberal asshole(s). Was there any spray paint cans in the car of will that be covered up by the whore liberal assholes.

The taggers were probably as much to blame, or maybe more, than the officer who hit an illegally parked/stopped car in the Dan Ryan in the middle of the night. I think it illegal to park on the Ryan, even for taggers.

Part of the problem people have with police is the common belief that cops cover up bad behavior of other cops until they get caught on video, or something like this accident happens that can't be covered up. The CPD will never get the support they deserve until this attitude changes in the rank and file, and MANAGEMENT steps up and gets rid of the crooks, drunks, mentally unbalanced, bullies and other misfits that should not be, and probably never should have been the police. Including the misfit that posted this nonsense at 12:39.

NO FAMILY SHOULD GO THROUGH NOT BEING ABLE TO IDENTIFY HIS COUSINS BODY BECAUSE IT IS TO BADLY BURNED. it was the media that made it a hugh issue that the driver was a drunk chicago police officer. I KNOW BECAUSE I ASKED THEM WHY THEY ARE MAKING SUCH A BIG DEAL, WE JUST WANT TO LAY MY COUSIN TO REST. THE MEDIA SAID " IT IS BECAUSE THE DRIVER IS A CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER". You did catch the news report that the IOC routinely sends it's 'investigators' into the cities on their bid list, unannounced and, effectively, incognito, prior to and, likely, during and after their official evaluation visit, didn't you? Thus there were IOC 'officials' checking out the proposed areas without enjoying the 'benefit' of that 24/7 'cone of silence'.

If the 'good' citizens of this city choose to be just as stupid, cynical, hateful and ignorant as the bad citizens of this city, they'll be in for a rude awakening, when the bad citizens take the 'good' citizens' attitudes as a green light to be bad with impunity.

Better get strapped, 'good' citizens; the bad citizens already are.

It's a generational thing.

With Richard J. Daley, (deceased), having failed to impress upon his progeny the responsibility to respect and appreciate the benefits clout bestows upon the clouted, and the first rule of thumb being to not shit on your chinaman, we see the inevitable results in this generation of clouted miscreants displaying their utter lack of valuing said clouted status.

Honestly guy, I didn't think anybody had to be told to get off the Ryan to change a tire. You obviously haven't pulled your head out of your ass yet. These kids played a big part in their own demise. Frugloli being fucked up didn't help and he will pay with next 14 years of his life.

4/12/2009 02:14:00 PM

No, we don't all drink to help us get through this job. Some of us get through this job without drinking a drop of the stuff. Ever. Since when is it a requirement that one must drink alcohol to somehow get through the daily rigors of being a police officer?

Alcoholics must drink to get through their day. Unfortunately when they also drive bad things tend to happen. And when they are also police officers with some clout, or not, the rank and file too often wrongly tries to protect them from their own destructive behavior.

We spend our careers holding people responsible for their actions and then work just as hard to prevent our co-workers from being held to that same standard. That doesn't make sense, The rules also apply to us.

It is against the law to drive drunk. Period. And if you drive drunk and wreck and kill people then you have gone way beyond the point of no return. You have become an offender who once was a police officer.

As I read these posts, one thing is striking to me. That is how you PO's seem as split as the general public on this tragedy. I see people blaming the blog, the victims, the driver, Daley, etc. As an "outsider" (non-PO) let me say one thing...STOP! You guys and girls did nothing wrong here. You can feel bad, but stop beating yourselves up here. People mention that Police Officers suffer from arrogance but I see the opposite. You are so used to being beat up that you do just a fine job yourselves. Realize that the general population, despite what you read, supports you guys. This tragedy will not change that because these people will realize that the main reason for this tradegy is the decision of ONE person! A secondary reason, which is why SCC has this blog, is the clout and patronage that keeps this Police force from being what it can be. Some more points are below. I don't hold myself out as some wise old sage or know-it-all, just my personal advice. (1) Please stop posting remarks about incidents with this detective. It just seems like "piling on" and being "gossipy". If some of you had issues with this detective, why didn't it come out before? This is not the right forum. He will pay for what happened, I know you don't doubt that. I don't write this saying you should never talk about things and cover-ups. Just saying that this is not the right time and place. (2)Don't blame the victims on this blog. Let the facts come out. No one knows for sure if they were gangbangers/taggers. I know a few kids that know him and say he wasn't... but let's wait and see. The grafitti on the wall angle?? Drug deal? Most people I have talked to see it this way. If our car breaks down on the xpressway, we will ride it as best we can until we are on a shoulder or off at an exit. There were no "shoulders" in that area but the 18th Street exit was not far off. Also, I would NEVER stay in my car, in a driving lane, at 3:30 am (where 50% of the people on the road are drunk). It has happened to me before and I either got out of the car and walked to the exit ramp or got to the front of the car about 15 feet up. Why didn't these guys? Who knows, they were young, maybe drinking, etc. But to give out info as facts (like the grafitti story) just makes you guys look bad. In the end, my point is this: You have a very hard job. One that I would not want nor even know if I can do. Please do not make it harder on yourselves by "blaming" yourselves or airing everything out here, it makes you seem unionified. The majority of people support you despite what you read (why we are the "silent majority" I don't know). Just stick together as a force. Don't bash those that support Joe because they are his friends (we all need friends through thick and thin). They don't agree with what happened yet support him nonetheless. However, don't make excuses either... most here agree that what happened is a tragedy and Joe will pay the price. Lastly, put most of you anger and passion into the real problem. A mayor with unbridled control over this city that is allowed to operate a system of "clout" that negatively affects everyone except his cronies. Think about the effect on your Department over the years. Please be safe and God bless you all as well as the families of all in this tragedy.
