Prohibition?

Looking at the current Bulletin Board in the station, we see the following:
  • 4 retirement flyers
  • 5 promotional flyers, 3 for exempts
  • 1 Christmas flyer (they haven't cleaned the board in a while)
Without exception, each and every one of these events is being held at an establishment that is licensed to serve booze. And without exception, a District Commander or higher is listed on the ticket committee.

We've all heard the stories, we've even experienced a few of them, where if you want to keep that spot in the Unit or that spot on the team, you better buy a ticket to this event or that one or (and this is the BIG one) that Christmas party. Exempts are notorious for bragging about how well attended their Christmas party was. It's a popularity contest.

We see a day in the not so distant future where exempts will be forbidden to be a part of any ticket committees where liquor might be in evidence. Christmas parties will be Temperance Movement affairs. Retirement parties will be limited to cake and coffee (decaf) in between domestics and shots fired calls.

And a beer will be something you drink in the basement with the lights out and the shades drawn. Alone.

35TH STREET INSIDER SAYS...

The powers-that-be are EXTREMELY upset about the disclosure of their brainstorming session regarding the surveillance of "Cop Bars". One gold star (but NEVER the police...hint, hint) has suggested initiating a blanket CR on all sworn members in the building around the time of aforementioned meeting (I can't wait to respond to any allegations on this one), as well as some kind of internal investigation involving the civilian employees who may have been privy to the goings-on at that meeting. An insider that is very well-versed in computers/IT was summoned to the 5th floor for input to see if the "leak" came from a computer at HQ.

NOW THIS PART IS JUST TEPID 35TH STREET RUMOR AT THIS TIME...

The next phase of MSF being formed may contain the team/squad responsible for the premise checks on the places coppers may hang out. Be cognizant of any people leaving your districts/units that:

- are breath tech certified
- are fluent/comfortable with doing traffic/DUI's
- have attended Northwestern Traffic School
- are suspected rats that you could see writing up a copper or copper's family members

If you know of any P.O.s with any or all of the above-listed "qualities" that suddenly put in the To-From to go to MSF, further investigation is probably warranted.

if you are caught drinking and driving you will be forced to watch the "we all make mistakes video" 100 times for punishment. you will also be sent to callback for a couple of years and then be slammed with 30 pending-- if you feel the need to drink-- do it at the casa and never open the door for any reason.

During her questions, Ambrose's attorney, Susan Shatz, highlighted several discrepancies between information contained in the documents and what the Marcello brothers had discussed on the recordings. Shatz also asked Maseth about federal investigations into several other potential sources of the information, including a former attorney for Calabrese and two retired high-ranking Chicago police officers. Shatz pointed out that several newspaper articles, including a February 2003 Tribune column by John Kass, had strongly speculated that Calabrese was assisting federal investigators months before most of the Marcello conversations played for the jury.

Who are the two high-ranking Chicago Police officials? Are they retired now? This really needs to come out, more Mob influence on the CPD.

a little off topic but some good advice for those who enjoy a drink and own a car. DON'T DRIVE ON THE FUCKING EXPRESSWAY. IF Frugoli really was drinking in Greektown and heading to Bridgeport why not just take Halsted? Its hard to fatally kill two people when you don't get above 25 mph. Better yet take the scenic route down Loomis. A better view of bubbly creek cannot be had.

FYI..About a year ago the department stopped approving and stamping posters for any party that is being held at a place that holds a liquor license in the City of Chicago. They will stamp it if the party is being held in the suburbs. Of course, nothing is in writing so when one of the downtown people have a party it gets stamped and distributed but the retiring P.O. from a district who has 30 years on gets denied. I'm sure that Jody will hang the first Boss out to dry if anything happens at one of these "unapproved" parties. Unless of course Aunt Bea's name is on it.

While I definitely agree that this was a tragedy, I think it is wrong to target us at establishments that are so called popular places amoong the Police.

I will say one thing if any of us are drinking and see another one that is to impaired we should step up and look out for one another and make sure he or she gets home safely.

This accident with Frugoli was exactly what it was an ACCIDENT. Granted he shouldn't of been driving but the fact of the matter is he was and now his life is pretty much turned upside down. Let's watch each other's back and not let this happen to any of us again. Also it is just my opinion but those FOp medallions or the stickers in the window, well they should probably come off, we don't need any extra attention. And for those of you that say welll it might save me aparking ticket, well the fact of the matter is now that probably is bullshit to with all these revenue people walking around nowadays anyway.

Christmas parties are lame. It's like going to a junior high party with all the cliques exclusively hanging out with each other. If you are not part of their clique, they don't want to talk to you (i.e., tact, gangs, etc). Then you have the subgroups of cliques within each watch. The people on the other watches don't know who you are because of non rotating shifts so you can't blame them.

I have enjoyed watching some of the skirmishes over some guy/girl whenever people start getting their beer muscles on. Like I said jr. high with guns.

I'm not a cop so I have no idea what kind of pressure you guys are under internally, but it seems to me that those saying that you can only drink in the basement with the lights off are blowing things way out of proportion.

The only guidelines you should be held to, are the ones everyone else is: Don't drive drunk. If you've had too many, take a cab or get a friend to drive. I don't think that's unreasonable at all.

If j-fed and the rest of the incompetent part of the inverted pyramid are saying you're not allowed to drink at all, the consequences being action taken at your job, can't you sue them? After all, if you're off-duty and not carrying, what should your employer care what you do? That doesn't make it any less wrong for drinking and driving, but it certainly is none of their fucking business what you do on your own time.

Worry about keeping your asses safe and going home; let the political idiots run around like the retards they are and make up bullshit feel-good policies that fail in reality.

There are alot of "COP BARS" out there but not inclusive to cops and their friends, (although there maybe a couple out there ) if not why don't a couple of you guys get together and open a couple of private clubs up for cops and their friends that are member only? I know it would be hard but there can be designated drivers so shit dont happen, this might be a stupid idea that wont work but........again I am not a cop, but I have alot of friends that are and I do not want them to have problems

everyone is missing the point, there is nothing wrong with going out and having a few drinks responsibly, like every other person in every other profession does, here's the catch, don't go out to get smashed! this isn't college, if you must try to re-live those days nightly, which I highly suggest you don't, take a cab, walk, catch a ride etc, but here's a better idea, just drink responsibly or not at all.
Promo parties, retirement parties etc are nice events to congratulate your friends on their good fortune and wish them well in their future endeavours, not excuses to get smashed, again, be responsible! designate a driver!

you might not see it here but under all this b.s. is a war starting at the top. this is just a bit of the thank you from the mayors office to organized labor who took on and unseated approx 8 incumbent alderman. the second is from scared little brat who was chosen to fill the commisioners seat at st&san while they indicted sanchez.this guy picardi never wanted this headache job!! he can't stand the heat brought to him by all sides and daily grinds his ax on the very work force that keeps this city looking as great as it does. fire em, move em, demote em, are his only words for years now. this was clearly the little kid in the bushes you would see on yr way to school as you were growing up. nobody but nobody respects this kid and can't wait for the very two days that will set them free. his retirement or his wake!!

In addition to the most obvious consequences of alcohol as a coping mechanism. . . how about the silent and/or private damage it does. Having high stress and other problems is not solved with alcohol and only exacerbates the emotional charge. It is the difference between getting through something and coming close to skidding off the planet. I hate when people I love drink a lot and I hate when they do it as a reaction to stress. It is painful to watch. Find another coping mechanism. Work out. That's hot.

When I see the drastic change to a cake and coffee (or energy drink) police dept. I feel sad for the new comers who never had or will have a chance to experience the fun, comraderie, and the chance of being a real policeMAN.

Of all of the gin joints in all the world you got to walk into mine. Not if I am enjoying myself in the suburbs. Can you imagine CPD clout babies walking into an Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Niles or Morton Grove bar, led by some clout asshole Sgt and gold star and demanding IDs and questioning bartenders. It is not against the law to have a drink or beer even in Chicago bars. I'd rather spend my money out of Chicago anyway.

As soon as the tavern owners find out that the Einsteins of CPD Management have their establishments targeted for close monitoring, they WILL immediately get Attorneys and sue the City, and again, the taxpayers will be stuck paying for Daley's pea-brained ideas..Reason ? CPD is singling THE alleged off duty cop hangouts [how does the city prove this?] as opposed to other taverns, restaurants, etc;
joints out for scrutiny, and this will cause non-police drinkers to also shy away, therefore discriminating against THE
affected tavern/restaurant businesses and their right to make money equally with any other tavern in the City, County, or State. Attorneys will pick this City's Taxpayers
BONE-DRY, if these stupid ideas keep up. Also, what happens when the first off-duty Cop goes in the joint, drinks soda, or sips only 1 beer for 2 hours or more, and gets stopped, and they ARE LEGALLY SOBER? Guess who's getting sued? The City, compliments, the off-duty oficer who got stopped. Then, guess who has to pay the Lawsuit damages? Not Weiss, not Daley, but US, the taxpayers. What happens if all the off-duty Cops decide to go drink at Gibsons, or the big Hotel bars? Do you think the owners would be a bit pissed off about their joints being spied on? Do you think once word got out, that their businesses might be adversely affects? After all, if the Gestapo Soies are looking for drunk off duty CPD officers, can they ignore all the other patrons of the joints who come out and drive after dirnking? These brain-fart geniuses at H.Q. couldn't think their way out of a cardboard box if they had to. They should all be fired or demoted to civilian maintenence workers.

The new asshole unit could use the services of the two goofs who wrote up DUIs on bullshit evidence. They could teach the new secret squad on the importance of being liars and how to fuck innocent drivers including off duty officers. Apparently these two guys had it down pretty good. And hey boys and girls they got awards for their cowardice. They would make great advisers to the Supt., who himself is a cowardly piece of shit.

TELL THEM YOU'RE A GARBAGE MAN - & YOU TAKE OUT GARBAGE...THAT'S THE TRUTH OF WHAT A COP DOES...

4/15/2009 02:36:00 AM

YOU JUST DON'T GET IT DO YOU? The reason why we as cops can not be intoxicated at anytime is because we are on 24 hours call back. That is why we get that duty allowance. You could be off on your R.D.O. on Friday night at 2300 hours and there might be an emergency and thus they call you up.

As police officers, we need to follow these rules. Don't like them? Then go find another profession. But I am so sick and tired of cops who just whine, whine, whine, get pissed off about the small stuff, etc....

The bar is charging $20 for an open bar at 11 am on Sunday. You know you are going to drink your $20, so you will be legally hammered by 1 pm. A good start for the rest of the day.

Fortunately, nothing bad ever happened to me or others because of my irresponsible behavior. So yes, there but for the grace of God go I. Now it's time for all of us, civilians and police to knock this shit off. There's too much at stake and too much too lose. Time to grow up. If you drink, don't drive, that's all.

13 CHICAGO COPS ARRESTED FOR DUI IN '08

Thirteen Chicago police officers were arrested last year on drunken driving charges, and five of them were involved in car crashes, two with injuries, the department says...

...A department source said this week that top brass may also push for random alcohol testing of officers. That would require changes in the contract with the Fraternal Order of Police, the union representing the rank and file...

4/15/2009 11:26:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can tell you right now

The Dept is taking a dim view of alchohol and alchohol related shennanigans.

One of the sticking points in the new contract is the Dept wants too increase their ability to discipline members who are suspected of abusing alchohol

There is talk of being prohibited from carrying a firearm off duty unless one is double zero on the breathalyzer.

Already the WC has to respond to any alchohol related incident involving Dept members

A word to the wise

SCC, there is an article in the LA Times regarding Alcohol related arrests in the LA County Sheriff's Dept. The article states that arrests for these arrests of Sheriff's Dept. employees have "soared." We are apparently not alone in dealing with this issue.

If one should come across any of the following who appear to have been drinking and then have the audacity to attempt to drive, one should immediately cite them for this crime and then notify SCC.

#1 Alderman or other politicians
#2 Exempt members
#3 FBI agents
#4 Assistant State's Attorneys
#5 Assistant United State's Attorneys
#6 reporters and other media employees

They should be held to the same standards as we are being held too!

By notifing SCC , and naming names and giving facts, it will be difficult for J-Fed to sweep it under the table.

I can tell you why CPD don't like writing DUI's. I used to work in the burbs years ago. A DUI consisted of a ONE PAGE report, ticket and tow. And i guarantee the conviction rate was still better than Chicago's corrupt court system! Remember Graylord?

This fuckin paper happy (paperless? lmao!)department made a DUI arrest in Chicago look like you're trying to rewrite WAR AND PEACE! Gee, let's not make it too easy for the defense lawyers!

Next, let's move traffic court to the most congested, no parking area of the city. Then, when you finally get there, you're fucked with by a Sgt. who is usually the biggest asshole Sgt. they can find on the department. I've had HOMICIDE CASES tried faster than DUI's in this shithole! And they wonder why coppers in this city hate writing DUI's?

Just ANOTHER instance of inept bosses and incompetent policy makers on this department!

So because I'm not a cop, I'm not allowed to tell you guys to just take it easy? A taxpaying citizen, who puts his pants on one leg at a time just like you, has a family just like you and wants to see YOU succeed at your job (just like you), has no say? And you wonder where your common support is? You're right; I don't understand the regulation you guys undergo. I read this blog all the time to try to understand it so when it comes time to vote or speak out, I can do so. The last thing I want is the agency charged with keeping law and order in the few remaining "good" neighborhoods, to have anything standing in the way of doing its job.

What I said, and you have not refuted, makes perfect sense. You should be held to the same standards as anyone else - no more, no less. Get hammered and get a driver, don't drink so much, or don't drink at all. If your superiors are demanding you give over your personal lives and personal habits and enjoyment OUTSIDE of work hours, tell them to go fuck their mother, as they have no right to, no more than my boss has the right to tell me what to do on my own time in my private sector job.

I see a lot of animosity here, don't you realize that some people that live here are on YOUR SIDE?

And don't you realize that not every posted comment is an accurate representation of anyone's opinion, other than the poster's?

And that, for this cop blog to remain inviting to all cops, some comments will be posted that most cops, and the owners of this blog, do not agree with?

And that the nature of open discourse requires that some opinions, like some assholes, will sometimes stink?

And that said stinking asshole opinions may, if exposed to the open air, lead to some discovering that wiping after every dump is a good thing?

Above all else, you're reading of this blog, and the comments posted here, gives you the chance, which few citizens choose to avail themselves of, of understanding exactly what kind of city you're living in.

Perhaps I am, but I'm grateful for that. I'd rather know than not know. I know only what I hear, because we both know the news is worthless - both on TV and in print. As much as I read things here and would like to fight along side you guys, I know I could never do it. I'd either go crazy from having to put up with the animals, or get sick of the bullshit. I may not understand the predicament you are in, but I try, and usually sympathize. I just can't believe that A) your superiors have any say in what you do off-duty while unarmed and have the legal grounds to do anything about that, and B) that Jody's tirades will actually lead to anything concrete.
