Congratulations New Hires

We don't know where you came from, but your presence is appreciated:
  • [Daley] added, "People in stress positions, many of 'em take alcohol and many take drugs. . . . Especially today [with] a whole new generation. We think it was alcohol, but many times they do take drugs. That's what happens to people. . . . It's uncalled for. But remember — we have 14,000 police officers. He's just one of the [14,000].''
And evidently, people in political positions take drugs, alcohol and numerous blows to the head.

14,000? Shortshanks' tenuous grasp on reality continues to fade.

, Please post this for all to see…
During the 1st Watch on 25 MAY, an off duty P.O. from the 008th District was involved in a traffic accident in which a child ran out in front of his vehicle. Luckily, the off duty officer reacted in time and only knocked the child to the ground resulting in minor scrapes. As the off duty officer exited his vehicle to check on the child, several family members ran out from their backyard party and approached the off duty officer in a threatening manner, causing him to identify himself as a police officer before locking himself in his vehicle until 008th District officers arrived. After more than an hour later, one of the family members of the child made an allegation at the hospital that the officer must be drunk, resulting in the off duty officer being ordered into 008 to submit to an administrative blow, as the newly revised order reads. An IAD supervisor arrived in 008 and advised the W/C that field sobriety tests must be performed as well as the complete warning to motorist DUI packet. After the off duty officer called FOP, IAD changed their mind and wanted only an administrative blow. The acting street deputy, Cmdr. Carter, made several calls on his blackberry before finally overriding IAD and ordering an ET to administer FST’s to the off duty officer, now more than five hours after the traffic crash. The off duty officer passed the FST’s without problem but then was led directly into the processing room and ordered to blow. The off duty officer complied and blew a .000 on the breathalyzer machine.

5/26/2009 01:07:00 AM

Thats great for the officer because now his rights have been violated. Was he arrested for suspicion of DUI? NO, so why did he have to submit to a criminal investigation? I would immediately get a CR# on that idiot Commander Carter who is so stupid he doesn't understand you are required to have certain elements before you can administer a criminal BAC test, if not we could be giving warning to motorists to every citizen we encounter.

The officer's rights we violated and he should file suit against the City, get some settlement money, and set a strong precedent for all these goof ball, EXEMPT, merit hacks that we are citizens and we have Constitutional rights just like every other citizen. We can't be ordered to submit to criminal breath tests without following State law concerning driving under the influence.

If anybody orders you to blow in from the CPD command staff criminally or ADMINISTRATIVELY, please do yourself a favor and REFUSE!!! The Administrative test can now be and will be used against you in your criminal trial and you will be convicted and lose your license, possibly go to jail and lose your job anyway. If you refuse the blow then you might get fired but at least you have a fighting chance of beating the DUI and maybe getting your job back.

DON'T forfeit your right against self-incrimination in a criminal trial just to keep your job, its only a job!!

5/26/2009 09:34:00 AM

THE FLOP might now come out with a directive ordering their membership to refuse to self incriminate themselves but please do yourself a favor and refuse to blow, EVER. THis job is not worth a criminal conviction...

If we have 14,000 as Ritchie says then why is Dugan trying to scrape up every body he can at the district level?
Hell if we really had 14,000 they'd create a few more units and bleed patrol some more.
Someone, maybe FOP?, needs to disclose the real numbers. The public needs to know that Ritchie and JFed are flat out lying and trying to blow smoke up the public's ass!

Yeah, congratulations on being among the last classes of CPD to have a real pension to look forward to.

One thing many people missed from the last FOP General meeting was Donahue hinting strongly that future hires NOT having the pension as we now have it.

He worded it very carefully and so far no one has mentioned it on this blog. He said no current officer need worry about their pension, that our rights were guaranteed. He said the City is moving towards a two tiered pension system.

That means to me to look for new hires to NOT be part of our pension system. That is the likely outcome of any new contract. We should guarantee pension rights somehow for future police officers, otherwise you can kiss this job goodbye, without new officers contributing into the system we will eventually have no one contributing into the pension fund.

Will some reporter please call Human Resources, the Pension Board and get the number of sworn officers on the job! There is a scandal here.

File a Freedom of Information Request if necessary.

The number is probably so low that it more than a matter of public and officer safety, it is FRAUD. The taxpayers are PAYING for the services of 13,500-14,000 sworn officers but are only getting how many!

And it is not as if Shortshanks is lavishing the rest of us with pay raises and benefits with the leftover money.

5/27/2009 12:35:00 AM

Listen junior. There were no computerized stats back in the 80s or 90s. And if you haven't figured it out yet no officer's stats (whether it be arrests, awards, etc) are accurate. The whole system is crap in, crap out.

Furthermore, if you are in the D unit, dics let the tact team take the pinch and the dics process and prove the case to the ASA. Or if you're in a specialized unit, you work investigations that go for months or years. Some of those investigations could be federal, and those stats aren't in our databases.

I could keep going, but the point is knock it off with how many arrests or awards someone has. It doesn't measure the quality of an officer. You'll realize that some day when you grow up.

"Witnesses reported seeing the 17-year veteran officer at a bar in the vicinity of 55th and Indiana before his car struck Trenton Booker at the intersection of 81st and Ashland around 1:30 a.m. Friday."

What the hell is a 13 year old boy doing out at 1:30 in the morning anyways?

I know the answer to that, but christ!

Shortshanks & Company does not need to publicly announce layoffs in the CPD. Every month there are anywhere from 40-60 LAYOFFS BY ATTRITION, and mostly senior, experienced high on the payscale officers. Just don't hire anyone and pull cops out of the districts into more and more phony strike forces that fly around while our neighborhoods go unprotected for the high taxes we pay.

LAYOFFS BY ATTRITION, no muss no fuss just let them walk off into the sunset.

You are correct. It is that way in many other states. Illinois is just slow in catching up. In many European contries your first DUI is also your last. You lose driving riveleges forever, no appeal. do it again and you are going to prison for a long long time. It ought to be that way here. That might cut down on some of the carnage on the roads and city streets.

At any rate, Illinois State law now provides for an involuntary blood/urine draw in a case of an auto crash with serious injury or death. You do not have the option of refusing, it is in the law. If the officer knows DUI procedures you can be taken with your permission or without, to a hospital and strapped down and your blood and/or urine can be collected.

So forget the administrative blow. Anyone can be legally forced to give blood or urine if serious injury or death results from a crash.

Best thing is do not get behind a wheel. It isn't illegal to walk drunk or to take a cab drunk or to take a bus or get a ride while drunk. And no one gets killed. And no one goes to prison or makes headlines or gets fired. How damn difficult is that to understand?

Citizens and police officers do not have a God given right to get totally obliterated on booze and then go driving around! Why do people continue to look to skirt around this simple fact?

Do not drive while drunk! Very simple.
