Historical Ignorance

Does anyone in the media even know how to do research at all?
  • President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, selecting a woman who would be the court's first Hispanic justice and a liberal who is unlikely to change its ideological balance.
Without a single deviation from the party line, every news outlet we followed today ran with this storyline. Obama had to have some sort of first...even if it's wrong:
  • Benjamin Cardozo (1870-1938), Supreme Court Justice 1932-1938, was of Portuguese descent. He holds the distinction of being nominated by a Republican president even though he was a lifelong Democrat. Hoover actually took the advice of both parties and nominated a man named the most qualified jurist in the nation.
The wikipedia entry has been altered extensively all day today, casting all sorts of aspersions on his ancestry, concentrating on the fact that his relatives fled Portugal for Holland during the Inquisitions due to Jewish heritage in an effort to make Sotomayor the first true "Hispanic" nominee. We guess if you aren't from this side of the Atlantic, your historical contributions to the American experience don't count for spit.

It'd be amusing if it wasn't so "1984" in terms of altering past events to fit the present narrative.

Altering past events is scary. Altering current events is scarier. We're witnessing the end of print media in America. Instead of a couple of hundred printing presses producing a daily newspaper, we are getting our news from one souce: The internet. Initially, it looks like a good deal; you get your news for free. But if we get our news from only one source, we only get one opinion from the same source. Imagine a news world of only Neil Steinberg columns. Imagine a news world without the voices of Kass, Novak, Roper, Marin, Laney and Brown. Whether you liked the columnists or not, they gave us different ideas to argue or agree about. In time, internet news will have one opinion: The state's; and all you will get is propoganda.

That makes as much sense as mandating that most NBA players must be white.

This must also enrage our most talented professionals who just happen to be a "minority".
Despite their excellence, society will continue to label our best and brightest minorities as "quota" selections.

Also go to www.YouTube.com and enter "Sotomayor" and "Duke" for a brief clip of her outrageous radical activist statement on the courts "making policy".

From Obama's intro of Sotomayer yesterday

"Sonia’s mom bought the only set of encyclopedias in the neighborhood, sent her children to a Catholic school called Cardinal Spellman, out of the belief that with a good education here in America all things are possible.

With the support of family, friends and teachers, Sonia earned scholarships to Princeton"

I'm pretty sure Portuguese does not count as "Hispanic".

As an attorney, one thing of which I am sure is that Benjamin Cardozo was one of the greatest legal minds in this country's history and should not be mentioned in the same breath as Sotomayor who hasn't done jack, regardless of where her political affiliations may lie.

Having a little trouble with this sentence, SCC -- it says that the effort to put Sotomayor on the Supreme Court began in the 1500s.

You are wrong. In Euorpe, people of Portugese decent are NOT Hispanic. They are refered to as Lusitanic or Lusophones just like people from Brasil. The term Hispanic in Europe and America refers to people of Latin American and/or Spanish speaking decent. If I'm not mistaken the term Hispanic was first used by Richard Nixon for census taking. So YES she would be the first Hipanic American and he was the first Luusophone on the Supreme Court.

Sorry SCC you are completely off base. Portugal is not Hispanic by any use of the definition. Come call my Portugee wife a hispanic and see what she gives you! Your desperate attempt to avoid an apology (see above) is ridiculous. No big deal, it's a common misconception. There are not more than 1500 people of Portuguese descent in Chicago. I know this sounds amazing, but it is true. When I first met my wife, I had to research Portugal because I realized that I had never met anyone from there living in Chicago where we have almost every type of nationality under the sun. According to your logic then, Americans are British as much more recently in history say 1175 (you cite back to 1469!) the United States was a British Colony.

Would someone PLEASE tell me what "white privelege" is???

I for one have never been given anything free just for being white.

Job wise, I applied for every job, dressed well, spoke well, showed respect during the interview then got the job. No matter what the job was.

My family came to this country, worked menial jobs, saved money, because back then there was no free handouts given, taught manners and rules of society.

The "priveleged" white people lived in slums, worked their way out of them, and went on to build the greatest nation in the world.

Now we are told we are bad, that the blacks deserve what our families struggled to attain.

Well what you people have to do is stop using your God given skin color as a damn crutch every time things dont go your way. Blame yourselves for your own problems.

In the white world there is no break given for laziness, we are accountable for ourselves. White trash has no place or compassion in the hard working white community. We work together for a goal, the slackers are quickly filtered out. That is what made this country what it is.

Start acting like Americans, none of you people were slaves, not every act against you was racist, you are not entitled to something just because you're black, welfare and public housing is supposed to be temporary.

Until you stop hating yourselves you are going nowhere, and the rest of society has to deal with your bullshit.....ah whats the use.

The Romans were conquered by the Germans. The US defeated the Germans. Let's go with the modern definition as it stands in the US.

From wikipedia: "The U.S. Office of Management and Budget currently defines "Hispanic or Latino" as "a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race".[14] This definition excludes people of Portuguese origins, such as Portuguese Americans or Brazilian Americans."

Maybe you were right in 1469. You are wrong now.

In the end, it doesn't really matter, but doesn't it seem to have been a weird thing to get up on a high horse about in the first place?

Scc once agian this blog amazes me. Regardless of how you try to twist it, your argument and premise was that she would not be the first "Hispanic" on the Supreme Court and that's completely wrong. Question posed "Does anyone know how to do research?"

Source used is wikipedia.

Look up wikipedia's definition of Hispanic. Consider whether the Supreme Court of the U.S. existed prior to the middle ages. Note the difference between Hispanic and Hispano-Roman.

Admit your error and gain credibility.
