The Noose Tightens

We aren't sure who should get the credit, but this is a good thing:
  • City pension officials have been hit with subpoenas from a federal grand jury trying to determine how they decided to invest $68 million with a start-up company co-owned by Mayor Daley’s nephew.

The grand jury issued the subpoenas Wednesday, nearly two months after city pension officials refused to comply with similar subpoenas issued by the city of Chicago’s inspector general, David Hoffman.

We'd like to see at least a few people head to jail over this. We'd also like to see a few of the elected Pension Board members who seem to have forgotten whom they are supposed to be representing have a sudden flash of introspection. They are likely going to be answering questions in front of a Federal Grand Jury shortly. And they are facing the voters soon.

Really ignorant question :

but, I know nothing about pension funding and it's operation, so I ask...

Does any of the fund go towards legal expenses of the "alleged"
trustees? (Vanecko et al).

If so how do we voice our protest to the matter? If not, sorry to waste your time. Also,

I've always been told growing up that knowledge was power. It's truer now than ever.
I'd love to learn about the board and how it was proposed to function at it's inception.

Then I'd love to participate in the total transparency of the board and their actions becoming a mandate by law.

How has it been changed and for the benefit of whom?

For years scum bag Daley has under funded all the pension funds but the elected officals fund.

With the economy in dire problems he can sit back and blame the city workers for higher taxes because by state constitution he must fund those pensions. Our pension director GALLAGHER has decided on his own not to press DALEY for the city's share every year. He also dose not press the city to pay for the disabled officers as required by contract and law instead he is so generous our pension will pay their share.

It is no secret DALEY wants to get rid of all of the city's pensions,
For years the workers have taken less pay inexchange for a pension when they retire, Thanks to X-Convict Rostenkowski you as a city employee will not get anything you put into social security even if you paid quarters already.

The pension is all we have left thanks to the theiving politicans, they keep appointing middle management people all throughout the city's departments at such high pay they can't afford to pay their share into the pensions and say we can pay next year! well next year is here so pay up MAYOR!

What happened to all that TIF money you took off the tax roll and nobody ever sees or hears about? BILLIONS GONE WHERE?

5/30/2009 09:27:00 AM
Anonymous A Devil's Advocate said...

I hate to say this, but when it's all said and done, I fear little will change.

Unfortunately, the pension trustees were all legally voted into their positions, which is to invest and protect our pension money. If they voted to invest the money with Daley's nephew, and our pension soared by millions of dollars, this investigation wouldn't be happening.

The only criminal charges that could stem from this, is if there is/was a conspiracy to defraud the fund in order to enrich individual trustees, or to improperly or illegally enrich DV Urban Realty Partners. I wouldn't count on Shortshanks being implicated in this one at all, and sadly, the rest of it will probably all be chalked up to poor judgement, a collapsing economy and an ill-advised investment on the part of our trustees... but nothing criminal.

Did the mayor want his nephew to become enormously rich? Absolutely.

Did the mayor orchestrate the vote from the pension trustees? Ya think?

Did the mayor want the pension fund to lose money? No but so what?

Did the mayor leave behind his fingerprints or any other evidence that HE broke the law? Nope, not likely.

So, there you have it. The Daley Crime Family gets richer, and we all suffer for it. Welcome to Chicago, The SWINDLEY City ! ! !

Trustee being an elected official's title and not representative of that official's performance while holding office. CPD will have to hold an informal lottery to select the good old street cops who will be charged with serving the arrest warrants on Shortshanks and his Aldermen. We have to stress to the public that every penny in the pension fund is our money!! Either by direct contribution from our paycheck or owed by the city as part of their obligation to us as employees. This is the same as Social Security where the employee makes his contribution and the employer makes their contribution as they are obligated to do by law.

The money is in no way any politicians money nor is it public funds for the poloticians to use and they shouldn't even have a say in the fund at all.

FOP should make their own waves or at least show their support for Shields.

Sorry but you dont get cushy county jobs like Nolan and Donahue waiting for you by telling the truth and fighting for the men and women of CPD.

I hope they tie Mark Donahue into all this scandel crap as well.

I talked to a CFD trustee about why they didn't cough up any funds, this was about a month after it hit the papers. He said that along with all the grief they would catch for giving those two clowns money, it was a crap proposal,so it was easy to say no. I hope that is what he will tell the Feds. I found it interesting that the Feds would look into why CFD didn't invest, one can only hope.

Too many people said "Miriam Santos for mayor" and that's exactly why Daley got rid of her. Everybody loved her. Well, almost everybody.

check how gallagher got his job without the board doing a search for the most qualified person. you think it may have been a set up. the executive director was and should be a PO.

When the time comes to take shortshanks into custody the Feds should hold a raffle with each ticket costing $1.00,just imagine how many coppers would buy tickets, thousands upon thousands of tickets, hell you would have a hard time keeping pace with sells. They would sellout as fast as the ink drying if not faster, you would have to rent a warehouse to store the money.
