Police Layoffs = More Guns

  • The first round of Toledo police layoffs, in which 75 officers were let go, may already be having an affect on gun ownership.

"I just don't feel safe with the amount they're laying off," says Jonna Ewing. "I think it's going to be a longer respond time."

She is spending the day at a conceal carry class. She's been thinking of getting a gun for awhile, but feels now's the time due to the recent layoffs.

At least Toledo is being upfront about their layoffs instead of watching 50 officers a month retire for the past two years and then having a single class of 46 recruits expected to fill the gap. And Ohio acknowledges that its citizens are allowed to own firearms of all types.

Has anyone found out if that entire Academy class is being assigned to 003 yet?

Ace Reporter Phil Schitz's sources tell him the recruits aren't going to the Third District.

They're going to Burger King.

So i'm in Vegas, great time by the way, pop on the local news and they have Barry Obama coming to Las Vegas for fundraiser at the Ceasar's Palace swanky place. The nevada governor and the vegas mayor are fuming that Barry is coming to town after he told the corporations to stay out of las vegas. So now vegas is in a bigger slump. But Obama can do no wrong.

Without a tax increase, the Columbus P.D. will also be facing layoffs.

Get your guns, Buckeyes!

Do sane, law-abiding and qualified citizens of Ohio have the right to concealed carry?

Daley is the biggest hypocrite with his huge armed detail of police valets. Yet the good citizens of Chicago are on their own with preying savages in our midst. I still can't believe the savagery at 9800 Halsted. May God bless the injured officer.

I like that line: "When you need help in seconds, the police are only minutes away." So true .

We are so short handed we have "laid off" about 2-3 thousand that is what we are short! But we have a huge overpaid exempt structure why is thta?

that won't be a problem here--- everyone who wants a gun already has one. maybe the personnel division should contact toledo and immediately hire those 75 lay offs. pay for the moving expenses just like they did for the fbi wizard and a quick refresher course at the academy and you have 75 guys ready to rock by the time july starts to sizzle.

The police serve very little purpose nowdays. Its all about traffic enforcement and not true crime fighting.

America needs to regain its pioneer spirit and take care of itself instead of an irish welfare nanny state.

This is very bad news if, in fact, the Toledo PD was not overstaffed.

Well, those of you who are liberals (i.e. libertarians, NOT leftists, welfare statists, or pcmc's) understand perfectly well that establishing and operating a professional, law abiding, and properly staffed police force is one of the few legitimate functions of a government. The purpose of such a force is too deter aggression, to protect civil liberties e.g. the right to criticize politicians in public, to nab gangbangers, and to cooperate with the courts whose responsibility it is to punish criminals e.g. racketeers. A government that fails to provide such a force has abandoned its purpose for being AND THUS IS ILLEGITIMATE. Private security doesn't count, for people can organize private security without the coercive hand of government.

What then must we conclude of the politicians and bureaucrats who think or behave otherwise? Well, they are not merely incompetent or negligent but also gangsters who would not be paid nor have wealth to redistribute without a system of coereced wealth redistribution called taxation.

Now, what must we conclude of police officers, too, who forget or neglect the fact that they, too, are government agents when the facts indicate that politicians and bureaucrats (e.g. Daleycrats and Obamacrats) are deliberately undermining the legitimacy of their governments?

I realize that the conclusion puts the police officer in a terrible position, esp. if he or she has a family and wealth insufficient to last a period of unemployment. Still, the truth is what it is. So, if you know of officers among you who are thinking incorrectly or, worse, who are corrupt, then you need to coax them from their closets and push them off the force, not protect them from, say, internal affairs as if the PD were a cult whose members are elites beyond reproach. Need I actually explain why?

By the way, Anonymous of 12:32 a.m. prescribed the most lazyminded solution, a tax increase, to a revenue shortage. But what government makes the best and highest use of the revenue that it already has?

Patrol should be fully staffed before any other division/burea/unit. If pPatrol is understaffed say by 15 % then Hq should take 15 % out of other Divisions/bureas and fully staff District Law Enforcement. Cut back TRU (Totally Ridiculous Unit), Area Saturation Teams (Ass Sucking Teams), the OCD gang teams (Ostrich Cock Disease), the Midnight Gang Teams/Gun Teams (who?) If we are short even this would help. And reduce the mayor's bodyguard detail by half.
