Bloody Weekend

At least 46 people shot.

At least 6 dead (we aren't sure if that's in addition to the 46 or part of the 46).

Someone can tell us if they count the "weekend" as Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, but the totals make the rate at either just under or just over 1 casualty per hour.

Warm weather. And getting warmer.

UPDATE: Counting the robberies where the victim caught a round or more, the total number of people shot seems to have climbed to 60+.

I grew up on the South Side more than a few years ago, and now live in North Carolina. I have a son who has married to a wonderful and beautiful woman and lives in 020. I love Chicago with all my soul. I truly believe that the experiences from my life in Chicago have enhanced my entire life. Now, with all the difficulties that the good and honest people of Chicago are faced with, I am so very afraid of the future for my son, his wife, and their children yet to be born. I certainly don't have the answers to the many serious problems the residents face, but there must be some brave, honest, and smart people that do have answers. PLEASE step up with your leadership.
"All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win, is for good people to do nothing". My prayers are with the good people who answer the call and choose to serve, protect, and lead. Thank you for all that you do to reach realize those goals.

Dude, get the fuck out of here. With all our common-sense gun control laws, this isn't even possible. Certainly if this was the case, it would either be a cold day in hell, or we'd have to reexamine the laws that deal with allowing law-abiding citizens to protect themselves, and that's just silly silly silly.

Shots fired at police investigating shooting
June 22, 2009 7:11 AM
A person was in custody this morning after allegedly firing at officers who were investigating a shooting on the South Side.

Police said they did not return fire and no one was injured. Officers recovered a 9mm handgun and a M-16 rifle after chasing down the suspect at 6120 S. St. Lawrence around midnight, police said.

Officers were in the area, questioning several people about a previous shooting, when the suspect was seen firing in the officers' direction, police said. The shooter fled in a car, then jumped out and began running, police said.

No other details were available.

LAPD gains new approval from the public
Los Angeles police are riding a crest of goodwill that has pushed the department's popularity to levels not sustained since the late 1980s as cops continue to post gains on fighting crime and building closer ties with the people they serve. The strong endorsement of the LAPD cuts across racial and ethnic lines, according to a new Los Angeles Times Poll -- with the percentages of black and Latino voters who say they approve of how the police do their jobs almost as high as the level among white voters. That result is particularly notable given the long history of tensions between the police and the city's black and Latino communities. The positive opinions of the LAPD stand out as a bright spot at a time when Angelenos are feeling battered by the recession, highly critical of public schools and generally pessimistic about life in Los Angeles.

What do we get? The "virtual world" of 190 North. Affluent tizzie-wizzies in a whirl of amusing little restaurants and exciting theater openings. We're all so well off and so good-looking and so very, very interesting -- and we all know each other, too!

The most junior of the "production assistants" is probably given a pocket full of five-dollar bills out of petty cash to get the homeless to move their carts out of the camera angle..."Yeah, man, uh, that would be way cool if you could do that for us, you know..."

Bloody weekend indeed! Really, where was there more violence this past weekend here or in Iran where a revolt is under way? Per capita I'd say here, thank you Daley for putting every citizen in harm's way as you cut every corner to finance your egotistical dream of hosting a two week sporting event that the average taxpayer will watch from their televsion set. He is totally out of touch with the reality of living here as a citizen. Shame on any and all who sit at his side and agree to his cost cutting moves to the police dept as he jeopardizes the working police and citizens of this once great city.

If there is no paper car to make the report did the crime really happen. This is how Daley is keeping the crime numbers down. The whole south and west sides are in a backlog so people dont get to make reports or get police service. If you get tired of waiting for the poice to show up an hour later and go home your robbery never gets reported.

These bosses with their desperate numbers games. Trying so hard to show progress over last year's numbers. It's truly laughable how they just juggle numbers around trying to show how much good they're doing.

Hey, let's "think outside the box" and solve this problem because we have a "mission." I'm still waiting for one of them to use the word "paradigm." I'll probably piss myself laughing at them when they mispronounce it.

I guess I had better keep my military bearing around all of those "warriors" and their new ideas for stopping the violence. I swear to God, they are actually funnier than the savages. I didn't think it possible, but they truly are.

Are there any politicians out there that give a crap about anyone anymore. Is this society all about money. What's in it for the City of Chicago residents when this Olympic deal works out? I have not read any indication that we will profit as a city. We will only have 5,000 more homicides by 2016 + 4xs the criminal population due to:

Unemployment, freeing prisoners to save money, less sentencing of gangmembers, less police on the streets, rewarding gang members for their behavior (not convicting them, giving them big lawsuit pay outs, and allowing them to control the streets), and creating new slums for more disfunctinal fatherless and motherless children to begin their pre-gang training.

We may as well bring the troops home and double the police forces in major cities. Troops spend so much time in other countries while our country is turning into a war zone! Not to mention the several thousand that we lost. For all you scum bags that will profit from the evil of mankind that are reading this I have one thing to say to you. You will live a life of misery and burn in hell. This is a very short life on this planet. It does not matter what religion you are or if you are athiest. Karma is gonna get you!
UGA BOOGA! UGA BOOGA! BOOOO!
The curse has begun!

Based on your posts, I proceeded to www.city-data.com to check it out. All 25 of "the worst neighborhoods in America" are street INTERSECTIONS, not neighborhoods. Essentially, all four Chicago locations are in the Englewood neighborhood--three in 007 and one in 002.

This list cites no methodology in determining the rankings. While I grant that none of these INTERSECTIONS would be safe for a Saturday night stroll, it's essentially hyperbole without empirical data.

Take the lone entry for NYC: 125th St. and St. Nicholas in the 28th Pct. (Harlem). Based on my familarity with the NYPD, I can assure all that the most violent crime infested neighborhoods in NYC will be found in Brooklyn [the 73rd (Brownsville) and 75th (East New York) precincts and in the South Bronx (44th Pct.)]

Incidentally, the 7-3 and the 7-5 share NYPD Radio Zone 22. Imagine the non-stop cacophony of bloodshed on a steamy summer Saturday night. Years back, they had over 230 homicides within the confines of Zone 22 in just one year.

Generally, Harlem has mellowed out quite a bit compared to years ago.

Also note that the #1 intersection (Central Pkwy & Liberty St.) is in Cincinnati's "Over the Rhine" neighborhood while an intersection in Springfield, IL comes in at #13.

I suggest the reader ignore this "list" as mere conjecture unsupported by facts. By definition, it does NOT even rank NEIGHBORHOODS in U.S. cities.

Nothing here to see, folks. Move along.

$21 million dollars to a gang leader who successfully forced witnesses to recant when he was given a new trial by our brillant Illinois Appellate judges 10 years after the murder was committed.

Oh yeah! $15,000 punitive damages against the Gang Investigator who arrested this POS.

Not one word about gang affiliation was allowed at the federal civil trial.

Have at it boys! The gang members are the heroes in this play and you are the villians. You better get that through your head before you get burned.

The next time you stop someone with drugs, or a gun, or fleeing a murder, imagine yourself paying him thousands of dollars out of your own pocket ten years down the road.

Think of that every time you get out of a squad. This city has not gotten what it deserves.

Not yet.

While all of you are so outraged, it just goes to show that you have no experience with the judicial system in Cook County.

If you as a regular citizen were arrested for this the States Attorney's Office would not have approved Felony charges because there was not great bodily harm (broken bones, hospitalization).

What would have happened is that the victim would not have signed complaints because of her immigration status and you would have not even been arrested.

Get in tune with the legal system.

Abate is a clown and I would not urinate on him if he were on fire, but you self righteous regular folks are ignorant of the law as it would be applied to you.

Save your false outrage for the next time you break a law and want a play.

I am an attorney who makes a lot of money in law suits against the city, I am not a cop lover, but you are all ignorant.

P.S. Keep up this anti cop mentality so I may continue to get rich, go home to my house in Winnetka and the Mayor of Oz can raise your taxes to cover it all.

What a country, you are clowns."

As for the rest of the comments on this article, short biggie must be popping an even shorter boner with these examples of just how fucking stupid the city's voting population still is.

Concerned City Taxpayer is correct when he says Daley created these war zones. He has deprived tax payers of the qualified supervisors they/we pay for and continues to deprive the city of the full complement of services we are taxed and also pay for. Police, fire, streets, schools, parks, public works. We don't want or need these ludicrous festivals. They were bonuses when they began. As a supplement to city services. They now have replaced the city services we so deperately need. Just give us what we pay for and keep the rest. Take the olympics, festivals, childrens museum, new parking meters, unqualified appointees all to your house and leave them there.

I agree completely on all aspects of PR Fest, not only did they not have private security inside the fest(off-duty coppers) they didn't have any EMS personnel either, every time someone fell oiut from the heat or was injured, a ambo from the city had to respond, an incredible strain on an already strained ambo service. The question, WHY? because he's too afraid to piss off the hispanic vote and caters to them, so the rest of the city suffers.
