Quote of the Year

  • A troubled Garfield Park teenager killed when the stolen Jeep he was riding in crashed and caught fire just yards from his home was a good kid who made a bad choice, family friends said Sunday.

  • "People will think, here's a kid who rode in a stolen car and got what he deserved. But if he'd grown up in different circumstances, he could have helped change the world."
And if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his ass when he hops.

Here's a clue people (and folks) - life is choices. We are what we make of them. And a parent is supposed to guide those choices, either by example or by taking the child by the hand and directing them to the correct choice. A 13-year-old doesn't just wake up and start taking other peoples automobiles with 4 friends one morning - it just doesn't happen. He sees people stealing, he sees a general disrespect for ownership of assets, he has no boundaries or enforceable limits or self discipline.

That's a failure of parenting. That's a failure of the community.

Actually you're mistaken SCC. An automobile is a liability, not an asset.

It being 2009 and all, I think we gotta put a new ring on this story.

How about a trouble teenage from the GOLDEN DOME area was killed blah blah blah...

Yes, Golden Dome. It's like "The Hills" or the "O.C." of the West Side.

Damn, kinda sounds like a good idea for a show. Just imagine those "hoppers" from The Wire meets Laguna Beach but set on the rustic, urban West Side.

I gotta pitch it to Rahm Emmanuel's brother!

Four rustic urbanites.

One stolen car.

Find out what happens next week on....GODLEN DOME.

PS - I was also thinking about calling my West Side reality show "As The Golden Dome Turns" but I dunno, it's kinda long in the tooth.

Oh boy "different circumstances" plenty of people don't have different circumstances, I have a cousin that has been on drugs since before her son was born. He is currently in his 3rd year of medical school!!!! Life is truly about choices and he chose not to follow his mothers footsteps or the footsteps or the other negative influences that surrounded him as a child.

If it hadn't been for all of the criminal acts the kid had done, he would have been a good kid.

If it wasn't for all of those rapes and killings that Gacy did, he would have been a pretty good guy.

If it wasn't for all of those Jews Hitler killed, he would have been a pretty good leader.

If it wasn't for all of the money that Shortshanks steals, he would be a good mayor.

OK. I think I see how this works. I'll take it from here.

That's right, middle of the night. So let me see, junior is out in the middle of the night with four friends who I'm sure were also "good kids" riding around in a stolen car. I think the "family friends" need to face reality.
This was the result of a lack of parenting and discipline.

No. You're wrong. Getting high to escape your circumstances is just that, an escape and a temporary one at that. I grew up poor in the hood with violence surrounding me, however I was so disgusted by it that I wanted a lasting solution to end circumstances that would pull me under if I let them. I went to school and stayed out of trouble. I know that is classic advice but hey it worked. I've never been arrested and I am doing alright as a blue collar worker. Getting high and being a punk is just a cop-out so I agree with the post on this topic. It is about choices. Your environment doesn't dictate who you will be. Your choices do.

I had one of those African American mothers (widowed) who whopped me and my twin brother for breathing wrong. She also taught us right from wrong, sacrifice, hard work, and the value of an education. The result, my brother with a 20 year military career and me with a decent public service job. SCC you pointed out the major ghetto philosophical failing.

They believe life is about luck. That those who succeed are lucky and those who don't are not. It's easier for them to believe this because it lets them believe that failure is not their fault.

This philosophy is why their lives are miserable.

I moved from St. Louis to Carbondale, Ill. in January. Several years ago, the mothers or other close relatives of St. Louis's thugs arrested for major crimes would tell the media that their son "was a good boy, an honor roll student, a great 'afawete,' who just happened to fall in with the wrong crowd."

As often as that excuse is used, and if all of them "just happen to fall in with the wrong crowd," the who, pray tell, is the wrong crowd? Is there any wrong crowd at all?

Thank you for that. I can't take all of the credit myself. I thank God for a God fearing husband (choice), a decent DePaul education (choice) good teachers (thanks Dr. Hawkins), and strong family values. Something that is sadly lacking in the majority of this community.

Believe it or not, there is a decent community of blacks out there that know the value of hard work and sacrifice, and we pray for you guys every day, and thank you for your dedication to protecting us from the rest of the dregs of society (yeah I said it). Whoever wrote this is doing a disservice to these morally impoverished individuals living in the ghetto who complain incessantly about their lot in life instead of doing something about it. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LIFE! How is it that Mr. Patel can come to the US with nothing and own a 7-11 or Dunkin' Donuts within a few years? He lives simply, his family members help each other and he works 18 hours a day (for what you would call "chump change"). I know, its easier to deal drugs than work for a living. It's hard work getting up early and working hard all day for an unappreciative boss and/or customers. Get over it! Move up from the bottom, educate yourself and work hard! Don't blame your position in life on your sorry circumstances, but change them for the better! Or only blame yourself for your misfortune!
