Slight Correction

The 108 shooting victims for 19 June through 26 June? Add 24 to that:
  • off topic but relating to the previous topic of "108 shot" the number is actually higher. if you look in data warehouse, clear, chris and in the web mapping features and combine all of that info you will find that the acutal victims of agg batt with a handgun is 132 from 19 jun 09 to 26 jun 09. the number of 108 is somewhat correct only because there were 108 incidents. some of these incidents had multiple gunshot victims which makes the exact number of gunshot victims 132. this does not include stabbings, but during that period there were no stabbing related homicides.. or at least none yet ruled homicides that were involving a knife. one of the homicides did involve a vehicle ramming and not gunfire. from what i am seeing it is a fairly bloody weekend. when monday or tuesday rolls around I will try to post the numbers for the weekend. for now, thats all I got. pretty violent... but still not as bad as the 90s as im sure many of you can still remember.
And someone else noted that the number of 041A Record Division numbers was higher this past weekend than during any other weekend this year or last year.

Supreme Court rules 5-4 for Frank Ricci / against Sonia Sotomayor
AP reports:

The Supreme Court has ruled that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.

New Haven was wrong to scrap a promotion exam because no African-Americans and only two Hispanic firefighters were likely to be made lieutenants or captains based on the results, the court said Monday in a 5-4 decision. The city said that it had acted to avoid a lawsuit from minorities.

The ruling could alter employment practices nationwide, potentially limiting the circumstances in which employers can be held liable for decisions when there is no evidence of intentional discrimination against minorities.

US Supremes decide in favor of white firefighters.

Read at http://www.supremecourtus.gov/opinions/08pdf/07-1428.pdf

Big, big case. Prevents cities and states from throwing out tests because they fear litigation after minorities didn't do well. This used to be the biggest way cities and states got reverse-discrimination cases tossed at trial. Now these governments can't throw out test results just because minorities will sue based on a "disparate impact". Now they can't toss the results unless they have a "strong basis" for believing that the test was ACTUALLY discriminatory.

Now, lots of reverse-discrimination suits are going to trial instead of being tossed in a summary motion.

Make sure you read Alito's concurring opinion. It's very interesting. Sound like Chicago?

He's my new favorite judge.

SCC did you here this...and they say Sotomayor doesn't or won't have an agenda if she is made a Supreme Court Justice. BS!!!

Supreme Court rules for white firefighter

From the MSN website...

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Monday that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.

New Haven was wrong to scrap a promotion exam because no African-Americans and only two Hispanic firefighters were likely to be made lieutenants or captains based on the results, the court said Monday in a 5-4 decision. The city said that it had acted to avoid a lawsuit from minorities.

The ruling could alter employment practices nationwide and make it harder to prove discrimination when there is no evidence it was intentional.

"Fear of litigation alone cannot justify an employer's reliance on race to the detriment of individuals who passed the examinations and qualified for promotions," Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his opinion for the court. He was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.

(AND THEN YOU HAVE THESE IDIOTS!!!)

Dissenting opinion
In dissent, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the white firefighters "understandably attract this court's sympathy. But they had no vested right to promotion. Nor have other persons received promotions in preference to them."

Justices Stephen Breyer, David Souter and John Paul Stevens signed onto Ginsburg's dissent, which she read aloud in court Monday

BUT SHE WON'T BRING PERSONAL AGENDAS TO THE HIGHEST COURT IN THE LAND...PLEASE!!!!

I ran everyone title coded as 9161 and it came out to about 9885, that included people in the academy , medical, iod and leave of absence. Then I ran all sworn personnel for the department which was roughly 12,800. BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter

Chicago Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Michael Picardi — under fire from Mayor Daley for overspending on snow removal — will be replaced today by Transportation Commissioner Tom Byrne, city hall sources say.

Picardi is in line to return to his old job as Fleet Management commissioner, replacing the retired Howard Henneman. The long-awaited City Hall shake-up was forecast by the Sun-Times weeks ago.

A longtime Daley favorite, Byrne is a former high-ranking Chicago Police officer brought in by the mayor in 2005 to clean up a Transportation Department hard hit by the Hired Truck and missing asphalt scandals.

Off topic. Please SCC place this where the "right" parties may see it. With apologies if this has already been addressed.

Dear Mayor Daley,

I may have a solution which may both reduce your budgetary woes, but also improve some of our more impoversihed neighborhoods. Why not, in the same manner as you have done with the Skyway, parking, and similar venues, offer to privatize or sell the rights to portions of some of our more crime ridden neighborhoods.

For instance, take a 4 square block portion of Englewood, or the West Side, and offer rights to that area, in perpetuity, for a sum of money. The highest bidder would then be allowed to improve, promote or otherwise make beneficial use of that area, both for its own gain, and that of the area's residents.

Offer the rights to any number of interested parties: Miller Beers, Budweiser, Nike, Orpah Winfrey, The National Football Leage, the NBA, perhaps even Jesse Jackson. Each winning bidder would be responsible for a portion of the area's police, fire and utility service in exchange for an upfront cash payment, and portion of resulting revenues derived.

Its a win-win for all involved: the City gets more revenue and shares the costs of supporting the area; the winning bidder can promote the expected improvements their support has created, thus generating priceless good will.

As always, feel free to use this suggestion without need for compensation to me.

I checked out the Supt. new blog today. Very mild and kind comments. I would like to see all of us post on his blog what we think the 5 most serious mistakes he has made (besides Cozzi, he knows that was #1, no need to let him know that one) Here are some of the more recent ones I was thinking of:
1. stripping patrol of manpower to staff MSF etc. Everything EXCEPT patrol is extra. Too much wasted time driving back and forth. Would do more good having bodies in districts.
2. Getting rid of watch secretaries.
These people on the whole are the care-takers of all of the little details that are very important to P.O.s It is not a part-time job. The WCs need to be focusing on the bigger picture, not worrying about doing the secretary's job. They should be out on the street leading, not bogged down with more paperwork and computer crap than they already are supposed to do. If positions have to be cut, so be it, but not this one. Its called quality of life on the watch.
3. Leaving buffoon bosses in place no matter what embarassing stunts they pull. We didn't expect you to know right off the bat who the best or not-so-good people were, but you have been here long enough now to take a hard look at some of the people you put in place. The longer you leave them in place, the greater your lack of credibility grows.

In June, there have been at least 12 shootings, many of them in the daytime, including a man killed Wednesday at a busy city intersection during the lunch hour. "The Guard is for floods and natural disasters. Off Topic, but I thought it needed to be posted, from APB:

Cops Speak Out
We must never forget why we do what we do
Written by Jim Gilbert
As we continue on in our personal career path, it's important for each of us to remember to keep the "spirit of a good police officer" in mind. This mantra is something I have followed during my 16 years on the job. Before I was elected president of my local FOP Lodge, I worked third shift, 11 precinct "C" company, in a very busy area in the inner city of Columbus, Ohio. I always started my shift by going over several things in my head, no matter what bad news came down: from the administration above; that the division of police may have delivered more policies/procedures to follow etc.; or gossip among the sarge and other coppers.

Your inner peace comes from remembering those things that make you love this job. After loading up the cruiser with the equipment you may need to accomplish, it is your decision which way the cruiser goes. Whether you choose to go right or left, stake out local business late in the shift for criminal activity, or head on another officer's call, it is your show.

There will be no one to blame at the end for your decisions but yourself. It is each officer's decision to read up on the latest in policing during your off time to gain the upper hand and specific knowledge in crime trends in your area of responsibility. It is your decision to carry a back-up handgun.

These are the decisions that can impact the outcome of your shift. This includes spending time watching the countless police shows that critique how you handled a specific incident. These things can be a weight on your spirit, just like rumors, new equipment, cruiser video and Monday morning quarterbacking by your agency's administration. Many agencies are facing layoffs and officers are being asked to do even more with less.

Less money, less personnel and in some circumstances, less support. Regardless of external influence, we must keep that "spirit of a good police officer." That positive attitude towards yourself and the job will keep the brotherhood of the thin blue line strong and will keep us committed to the profession we all love - law enforcement work.

Jim Gilbert is a sergeant with the Columbus Division of Police and the president of Capital City FOP Lodge #9 in Columbus, Ohio. FOP Lodge #9 serves 4100 active and retired members from 28 agencies in central Ohio. It is the largest police union in Ohio.

So see daley knows there is some officers that will break the thin blue line and whore themselves out for time & a half.

yeah so... dont forget what comes first on this job... family. I love the fact that the city who is "broke" has to pay me time and a half. I dont care about you or your bullsh*t attituide, i got to make money for me and my family and im gonna.. take your b.s. somewhere else stroke

I was bored one day in the office and decided to run some numbers to see what this 13,500 number they use was all about. I ran everyone title coded as 9161 and it came out to about 9885, that included people in the academy , medical, iod and leave of absence. Then I ran all sworn personnel for the department which was roughly 12,800. So when they are talikng about 13,500 their talking about the whole dept not just po's but the numbers are still quite off.

Yeah. Duh. No one ever said there were 13,500 9161's. Everyone up to the superintendent (except the current one) is a sworn member of the Chicago police department.

The point is, we don't HAVE 13,500 SWORN members of the department. And we haven't in a very long time.

Nearly three years ago, someone in finance mentioned 9,700 sworn checks had been cut for that payroll, for ALL sworn members. Now, even if that was a check-run for only those who were full duty and it was a shift availability check (remember, you don't get that if you're on longterm medical - I don't know if you get it while you're light duty), the number was still frighteningly low. You do the math.

Daley never says 13,500 officers any more; he says police personnel or department employees. Maybe we have 13,500 if you count the civilians? The point is, he's lying to the citizens. Again.

I'll tell you how they come up with these high numbers:

you are assigned to a district = 1
then you are detailed to a unit= 2
then you might go to a specialized detail / task force=3

so, one person with three different counts..

The right number is about Less than 10,000... A whole lot less....
