Daley Kills Two Birds

  • Thirty-two times in the last 20 years, Mayor Daley has appointed aldermen to fill City Council vacancies.

Unless the outgoing alderman was convicted and headed off to prison, the mayor followed the departing alderman’s recommendation on a successor.

Today, Daley broke the mold — by appointing 57-year-old Cook County Commissioner Roberto Maldonado to replace Billy Ocasio as 26th Ward alderman.

And who is Roberto Maldonado? Clean and pure as the driven snow?
  • In 2005, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Maldonado’s top aides maintained a secret “clout list” with the names of 100 people in line for government jobs and promotions as payback for political work they had done.

Maldonado admitted he knew many of the people on the list and that some had been heavily involved in his 26th Ward Regular Democratic Organization. But, he insisted that he never saw the list until the Sun-Times showed it to him.

At around that same time, Maldonado’s records were subpoenaed by a federal grand jury probing medical supply giant Siemens. The company was subsequently accused of lying to the FBI and a federal judge to cover up a scheme in which Siemens paid a minority business to be its phony partner on a $49 million Cook County contract.

Siemens and Faustech gave Maldonado $3,000 in campaign contributions before the bids were submitted. Maldonado also received thousands in contributions from convicted businessman Tony Rezko, a former fund-raiser and chief adviser to indicted former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

And he apparently was the 14th vote that would have overridden Stroger's veto of the tax hike roll back - meaning that Daley, in effect, bolstered Stroger's position in keeping the Cook County sales tax as the highest in the nation.

Maybe the HDO isn't dead after all.

Speaking of HDO, has Victor Reyes fallen off the face of the Earth? The "Teflon Juan" hasn't been seen or heard from/about in quite some time.

Would here and now be the wrong time & place to let Vic know that I know the people who bought his previous home on South Mason.

And that when the new owners had problems with their phone and internet reception, they called the phone company.

And when the phone company technician opened up the box accessible "only" to phone company employees, he produced a device and uttered "Ooooh, boy - I see you have problems".

Dismayed at thinking he'd have to pay hundreds to have a major problem fixed, the new owner of this particular residence asked what the device that needed replacing was, to which the technician replied: "it doesn't need to be replaced - it needs to be REMOVED. He further explained that the device was wired-in to intercept incoming and outgoing calls. OOPS!!

Yes, it's been a few years since you've moved out of the Mason address, VIc, but if I were you I'd be thinking REAL hard about what I may have said on the house phone.

Another HDO hack on the way to the joint, I hope.

These jag offs are bought off for a couple of thousand dollars to get multi-million dollar contracts? I think I'll join them. I have a few thousand I can throw their way. I'll haul the cadavers. BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!

I never knew that they were bought off so cheaply. I take back everything I ever said about these scum bag politicians. I'm in. I have disposable income. This is going to work just fine.

So what's the problem? He'll fit right in with Tricky Dick Daley & the rest of the assholes! Seems like even The G can't bring these assholes down. I guess they're too powerful, so we've got to find other ways to fuck with them.

And hey, at least Ocasio didn't get to keep the seat in the family.

"And he apparently was the 14th vote that would have overridden Stroger's veto of the tax hike roll back - meaning that Daley, in effect, bolstered Stroger's position in keeping the Cook County sales tax as the highest in the nation."

Frankly I enjoy shopping at places just across the border that proudly proclaim "NO COOK COUNTY TAX" or "NO CHICAGO TAX".

The wife and I spent a great weekend, wining and dining in Du Page county recently. When I compared the cost of staying at a downtown Chicago hotel versus going to the Du Page county resort that I chose, getting out of Chicago saved me lots of money. I filled up the car with much cheaper gas before returning, too!

Their plan is working-they're pricing me right out of town. Tricky Dick Daley & Toddler must not want me to spend my money here!

Maldonado, is even dirtier than the little bastard Ocasio he replaced. I don't know too much about building codes or zoning but any reporter might want to check out the new house he is building. It's either in the 1700 block of N. Albany or Troy. This is like Guitirrez all over again. It's taken up 2 city lots. Huge, ghetto fabulous and I am betting he's not paying taxes on the land. More shit changes the more it stays the same.

More proof that the status quo exists at all levels of government in not only the City/County.

Stroger needed Maldonado off the board so he could maintain his veto power. Maldonado needed to get off the board to show that he is a man of the people, but really isn't.

Daley saves everyone, including himself from not having to take sides.

The Daley family are the shrewdist MFers ever in the history of Politics, and that includes the Long family of Lousiana, the Kennedy family and the Brown family of California.

It's interesting that Siemens is involved with Maldonado. It appears that Siemens M.O. is to pay off politicians in order to secure government contracts. The following article hints on the extent of this practice. I bet that Maldonado's involvement with Siemens is the tip of the iceberg. Siemens is willing to pay out millions in bribes. Chicago is a target rich environment for them. Siemens probably has a slush fund already set up in case Chicago gets the Olympics. (see Athens Olympics below). Google Siemens and corruption for more info.

Siemens Hit by Corruption Charges in Greece, Norway

Investigators say bribes to obtain foreign contracts was a widespread practice at Siemens
Embattled engineering giant Siemens, under investigation in Germany for allegations of bribery and corruption, was dealt another blow this week as faced charges of bribing politicians in Greece and a fine in Norway.

A Greek prosecutor on Tuesday, July 1 filed charges of bribery and money laundering in a corruption probe into deals between the Greek state and German engineering company Siemens.

The charges follow a two-year investigation into contracts won by Siemens to equip Greece's main telecoms operator OTE over a decade ago and later to help create an expensive security system for the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Scandal rocks Greek politics

The probe in Greece began after revelations in 2005 that Siemens had earmarked a significant amount of funds for bribes to secure foreign contracts.

So far about 100 people, including former executives in Siemens AG's Greek unit and OTE, have testified to Athens prosecutor Panayiotis Athanassiou during the two-year investigation. Several businessmen and stockbrokers suspected of acting as middle men for the payouts have also gone on the stand.

Kostas Karamanlis, Greek prime minister has promised a parliamentary investigation

The affair has rocked the two main political parties in Greece, the ruling New Democracy conservatives and the opposition Pasok socialists. The Greek media has for weeks speculated that officials on both sides received perks, gifts and payments from Siemens slush funds. However, both parties have denied receiving cash.

The socialists were in power until 2004 and oversaw the bulk of preparations for the Athens Olympics. But the ruling New Democracy conservatives could also be implicated in the scandal as the Siemens payments continued after they came to power, Greek press reports claim.

On Tuesday, respected Greek daily Kathimerini claimed Siemens company officials earmarked more than €12 million (US$19 million) for Greece's main political parties between 1998 and 2005...

...Separately, police in Norway said Tuesday they were imposing a fine on the local unit of German engineering giant Siemens of two million kroner ($400,000) for corruption in defense contracts.

Siemens, one of the world's best known companies, is being investigated in several countries over allegations of bribery and corruption.

In Germany, Siemens is fighting a damaging corruption scandal since 2006. It centers on the existence of a slush fund that was used to win industrial contracts.

The group, which employs 400,000 people around the world and makes a broad range of products including household appliances, medical equipment, trains, turbines and power stations, acknowledged following an internal probe that 1.3 billion euros ($2 billion) disappeared into various funds. It said it had found evidence of violations across the company and in several countries.

German investigators have since determined that payments to obtain foreign contracts were a widespread practice among Siemens multiple divisions...

So... the Mayor's pick is connected with the most corrupt corporation in Europe.

Media, are you here? Hellooooo, anybody here? Guess not, too complicated, too many waves. COWARDS!

Nice try, "devices" are usually placed at the junction box on the pole and are not usually necessary with today's software and hardware; on the pole is easier to get at to place and remove,,,note remove because that is a normal condition of search warrants,, and you don't have to do a creepy crawly exercise to get to it, just have comcast on the side of your van and not draw attention,,,so if anything was indeed found, it was not federal.

Which means, whispering Vic, if there was something, somebody with a vowel at the end of their name most likely was interested in your conversations, which wouldn't be a comforting thought.

Little Victor Reyes is still in the cross hairs of the Feds. His indictment would have been announced right around Al Sanchez’s sentencing. The question will be if they indict him with Donovan or do they have separate trials. Other possibility is that they indict him and his wife at the same time. Donovan and Reyes started the HDO together at the bequest of shortshanks.

All of this has been put on the back burner because of Blago. Had he not tried to sell the senate seat to Jesse Jr. His indictment would have been put off until he left office. After Reyes/Donovan it was to be either Degnan or maybe Maggie and Joyce. With shortshanks as the final act. They have been working up the ladder to shortshanks but you have to wonder if Obama has AG Holder put the reigns on Fitzgerald. The Rezko-Davis-Vanecko connection leads right back to Obama. Watching shortshanks do the perp walk would second best only to winning the Mega Millions!

This was a big slap in the face to the 26th ward constituents; nothing changes in SHIT-CAGO POLITICS the same nepotism and bullshit, corrupted politicians in the ward.
It was a POLITICAL choice and not a smart choice, and now we had to deal with it.
Da May had the opportunity to seat few other young smart candidates but instead he chooses another WOLF from the pack, just another PUPPET ALDERMAN that he can manipulate and give orders without putting a fight.
The worst is, that Maldonado is under the Fed’s microscope for previous corruptions mentioned on the thread.
Well, he has few months of life and has to prove the community wrong otherwise he will be standing in the sweaty stinky unemployment line, unless the Pimp Jose Lopez and his CALL GURL Luis Gutierrez come to the rescue and give him another city or Federal cushion job so he can collect another pension just like the rest of them shitcago crook’s

A citizen troller wants to know if anyone can tell us why Maldonado is writing letters to the PRB to get POS Ronnie "Mad Dog" Carrasquillo who shot and killed CPD Terry Loftus paroled while my 77 yr old mother and I are writing letters to keep the POS who shot him in prison? And Daley you are a tool, this involves YOU. When Schanna Gayden was shot and killed in 6/07, you and that incompetent Arnie Duncan were complaining in the press about guns on the streets but all of you thug Democrats are trying to spring Ronnie. Shout out to Det. Frank Ortiz. Last I heard, a city councilman, county board member, state senator and U.S. Congressman are going to bat for this jag off. Why?

Another question from a troll. Could one of you "journalists" (not you Sneed) ask Maldonado why he and other politicians are trying to spring cop killer Ronnie Carrasquillo from prison? He is an Imperial Spanish Gangster, still active in prison. What do you think will happen if he is released back into the Logan Square area? Ask Daley why he thinks Maldonado and Guitierz and Sandoval want this cretin out of prison? Ask Daley if he wants Carraquillo paroled. Ask Daley why he would have anything to do with anybody who seeks the release of a convicted cop killer from prison?
Ask Daley why he complains about guns on the streets as the reason for crime but thinks little of his cronies trying to get thugs out of prisons where they belong as a better idea to keep the streets safe. Ask Daley why the city has turned to crap since he has been mayor.

Dear scc:

He must know that noone will ever have the power to take him out of office, that is the only logical reason behind all of his moves. The only way is through the vote. I find it so hard to believe that there isn't one viable candidate willing to emerge from this city that is both worthy and clean and is strong enough to survive the assassination attempts. But we all know that is just a dream. Same thing with the alderscum from the bottom of my shoes. I truly believe the only way to combat the political nonsense of this once great and proud city is to get term limits on the ballot. So anyone out there that knows what has to be done in order to make that happen, please post.
