Seven in One Blow

Crime is down, but shootings are up. And nights like this ruin the curve:
  • A total of seven people were shot and wounded near the intersection of Walnut Street and Homan Avenue late Tuesday, fire department spokesman Larry Langford said.

Six of the victims were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, while the seventh was in serious condition with a graze wound, Langford said. All of the victims were males, ranging from teens to young adults.

Authorities responded to a report of someone shot in the area of Homan and Walnut just before 10:45 p.m.,[...]

Some of the shooting victims fled the scene after being wounded, one being found in an area convenience store, Langford said.

An Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 was called, and then additional ambulances were sent for, bring a total of seven ambulances to the scene.

On the Watch Commander Shooting Report, we're going to guess that this one will be listed as "Retaliation? Likely."

What the hell were they shooting with?

An M-60 machine gun?

If the casings are 7.62 I suggest the detectives call in the Feds because some armory may be missing a weapon.

Perhaps the department can get some surplus armored vehicles from the military because reading that gives me Iraq flashbacks and I wasn't even there.

"Dem' boys won't doin' nuthin'." Deys hona' students."
Most disturbing of all, most of the residents said, "Fuck da poleeces. Dis shit ez da West side, and se's takes care our own bidzness."

Anonymous sourcees, quite possibly law enforcement sources, but not Chicago Plice sources (so the IAD Special Agent doesn't have to generate another useless CR#) said, "Chicago's asshole of a mayor and his dipshit superintenedent are lucky this is a very mild summer. If we had one our blast furnace style summers, it would of been seven DEAD."

Chicago isn't out of the woods yet. Weather experts are predicting unusually HOT weather in September, just in time for the anual "Back to School Drive By". This weather system is expected to extend into the middle of October.

Carol Marin's segment last night was a real disappointment - nothing more than an infomercial for Ceasefire - the latest in a long line of failed social service efforts to address the crime problem. Started as a well-intentioned "concept", it was taken over by gang-members and they are wanting to restore their multimillion dollar state funding. A variation of the tried and true formula in existence for ages - angry, illiterate young people act up and money is thrown to those who purport themselves to be the "fixers" of the problem. Hasn't worked before and is not going to work now.

How unfortunate for Carol Marin that these seven poor wounded gentlemen were shot AFTER NBC5's hard hitting, Emmy worthy, news report "Homicides Down, But Shootings Up". Had they been shot a couple hours earlier, it would have made a nice lead-in to her "Special Report".

Marin: - "There are experts who believe the numbers [of shooting victims] are being under-counted".

Marin: - "Does CPD have an accurate tally of who's been shot or how many gunshots there have been?"

DC Ruiz 010: - "I believe so"

DC Ruiz 010: - "There might be somebody who was shot that do not want it reported".

What you just read was the TOTAL Police response that Channel 5 chose to air. An 18 year old 'Ceasefire' member was more prominently featured than the CPD.

What ever happened to REAL investigative reporting ? ? ?

Except for showing some crime scene tape and a gun, it could have passed as a 'fluff' piece narrated by a Twinkie. What a joke. Even their URL has the story's title backward...!

O.T.

Effective next Monday, police officers will be able to fire their guns under circumstances where they previously could not.

The new policy, from police Supt. Jody Weis and confirmed by WBBM Newsradio 780 Wednesday morning, allows police officers to shoot at fleeing vehicles if the driver or passengers are suspected of committing a felony.

The old policy allowed officers only to shoot at vehicles that pose a threat to them or others, such as if the driver were trying to run down the officer.

But now, officers need not be under attack to open fire.

New rules: when cops can shoot at fleeing vehicles

Mike Krauser Reporting

CHICAGO (WBBM) - There's a major change in policy regarding the use of deadly force by Chicago Police.

Chicago police, starting next Monday, will be changing the rules regarding when it's okay to shoot.

The new policy, from police superintendent Jody Weis, allows police officers to shoot at fleeing vehicles, according to police spokesman Roderick Drew.

"Now officers will be able to fire upon the driver or passenger in a vehicle if that person is a forcible fleeing felon, someone who has committed a very serious offense resulting in bodily harm or has threatened to commit great bodily harm," Drew told Newsradio 780.

The old policy allowed officers to shoot at vehicles that pose a threat to them or others, if the driver was trying to run down the officer, for example.

Now, they'll be allowed to shoot at people trying to get away.

There are some rules of engagement.

WBBM: "You guys are going to get some serious criticism, this is going to be national news if the police are now allowed to shoot at a fleeing vehicle of some guys who just conducted an armed robbery."

DREW: "Again, it is up to the discretion of the member."

So who, among criminals, qualifies?

"It gives department members the option of taking off a dangerous member, someone who has either created or committed a serious offense or could commit a serious offense if he or she is allowed to flee the scene," Drew explained.

WBBM: "Someone who's robbed a grocery store and takes off, does this not allow the police to open fire on that person?"

DREW: "Well, that's where it gets into the whole training aspect."

But the answer is yes, they could shoot at the car fleeing the robbery.

6.3 % increase in shootings this year, so far over, last year;

Its time to allow proactive policing again. The States have to allow searches of vehicles, allow chases, then indemnify the city and sue the driver of vehicle causing chase only. Allow random checks of vehicles as a condition of obtaining a driver's license, get some real judges, make jail an uncomfortable place to be and back up your police officers. All so simple!

Totals? I just snapped on the TV and Channel 9 had a map up with so many "shooting" dots on the West and South Sides that they were overlapping. "VIOLENT NIGHT" was the headline.

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com
/2009/07/shootings-wound-at-least-
15-overnight.html

God only knows what'll happen tonight -- and the next night -- and the next.

Buying Tahoes and M-4s and cargo pants isn't going to help. Re-shuffling police assignments isn't going to help. Forming and re-forming new "response units" isn't going to help.

What would help is not going to be done.

"It was found that the public mind would not yet bear the proposition, nor will it bear it even at this day. Yet the day is not distant when it must bear and adopt it or worse will follow. Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free. Nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government. Nature, habit, opinion has drawn indelible lines of distinction between them. It is still in our power to direct the process of emancipation and deportation peaceably and in such slow degree as that the evil will wear off insensibly, and their place be pari passu filled up by free white laborers. If on the contrary it is left to force itself on, human nature must shudder at the prospect held up. We should in vain look for an example in the Spanish deportation or deletion of the Moors. This precedent would fall far short of our case."

-- Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography, 1821. ME 1:72)

That's the entire quote -- not just the snippet they picked out to carve on the Jefferson Memorial.

At Wednesday's City Council meeting, Police Committee Chairman Isaac Carothers (29th) introduced an ordinance that would require Council approval before any change in general orders concerning the use of deadly force

How fucked up is this. A criminal who should be going to jail is setting policy? Only here!

There go more of our tax dollars patching up these useless life forms. Damn those shooters. Can't they do anything right?

Took a trip to the neighboorhood using the street level view of google maps. As previously posted there is a POD right there on the northwest corner maybe 50-70 yards from the bar on the southwest corner of Homan & Walnut.

If working, that POD should have had a perfect view of the shootings.

The Garfield Lagoon area looks really nice 'though probably not too safe for the taxpaying chicagoians supporting it.

That would mean even more money! Round table on the OT. Corp counsel time for the lawsuit filed by the dead POS family. Criminal court time if he survives on top of the corp counsel time. Three days off!

Plus a free bullet refill!

I can't lose!

I love this job!

Chalkie visited 018 last night! The fyny part of it all there was an M/1 standing on the corner writing on a clipboard, officers asked who he was and he stated he was from the Olympic committee and was drawing a diagram of the area. Pretty sure the shooting won't be on that one.

Thanks to CPD for assitance with robbery/homicide at Shirl's Drive-In in Kenosha. Two taken into custody last night, one arriving at jail via ER after attempting to flee and resisting.

We may need some Chalkie shirts before the end of the summer.
