What Global Warming?

  • Have you left your air conditioner in the closet this summer, and worn long pants more often than shorts? If so, you may not be surprised to find out that Chicago is seeing its coldest July in more than 65 years.

The National Weather Service says 2009 has seen the coldest July since the official recording station was moved away from the lakefront in 1942. The average temperature this month in Chicago has been a mere 68.9 degrees.

Even in the years before 1942, when the National Weather Service recorded temperatures at the cooler lakefront, there are only three years that had colder Julys through the 26th.
Mother Nature wants it cooler, probably so the Blackhawks can win a Stanley Cup.

SCC, its been snowing, raining, and heavy humidity for almost a year. Please accept that its here, and that has nothing to do with Washington, cars, or airplanes. It is only a cycle, but it is a fact.
Slowing or minimalizing CFC's will help, hence the fossil fule shit in the media. Plus it makes SCARY or WORRYSOME news.

Well, it's been cool in Chicago. But if you want the truth on the global climate, here it is.:

> •Based on preliminary data, the globally averaged combined land and sea surface temperature was the second warmest on record for June and the January-June year-to-date tied with 2004 as the fifth warmest on record.

Only a naive right-winger would look at Chicago or US climate data and pretend that told us something meaningful about a global phenomenon.

It is called climate change.

I say this is Mother Nature's way of balance, everything stays the same in the end.

Lake levels are down? It rains like a MoFo and now the Great Lakes are at their highest levels ever.

I haven't watered my lawn since last summer, that says something.

I think Al Gore is full of shit (who cares what I think, a lot of his data is frivolous), but I can say that this is not normal. Anything that deviates from normal for extended periods of time, is cause for concern.

Remember last year? I thought we had 6 90 degree plus days. That's very few for a Chicago summer. Remember also last winter, which seemed to last FOREVER. These winters are terrible..no wonder it gets warm out and the animals shoot each other.

Forget about Al Gore and a cool summer in Chicago; the permafrost in the arctic region is no longer permanent. The perma part of it is over. Gore Shmore, something drastic is changing in the formerly all ice portions of the planet. No Democrat or Republican talk show nonsense can explain that one.

This post likely won't make it past SCC who doesn't believe in climate change. I am no Democrat but I spent last summer on a vacation up in Glacier National Park. It is much different than when I was there 25 years ago. As in very little of the glaciers left. The park people are now saying that by 2020 there will be No glaciers left there. And I didn't hear that from any Obama lover or CNN talking head.

Great Lakes water levels rebound after long slump
July 18, 2009

Erie, shallowest of the lakes, actually exceeded its long-term average in June. So did Lake Ontario, although its level is determined more by artificial structures than nature.

2) general trends in weather patterns over time, not just one or two summers

If the mercury next summer is consistently in the 90s, will you give Al Gore some credit? I won't hold my breath.

I think that you do not understand how global warming works, it is not a case of we all get hot and then fall down. Global warming is a disruption of the normal weather patterns which will both regional and national and it will change. Thus during one time period in Illinois the weather will be cold while in another region of the US a drought will be happening, currently this is the case in IL and Texas. This will change, but when and how cannot be predicted it could be month to month, year to year, or cycle to cycle . The main problem will be that growing seasons will be affected and crops will be lost, the fear is that if enough crops are affected food shortages will be unavoidable.

If you look at the whole world as a system in balance, which weather wise it generally is, the oceanic water currents help maintain that balance through the movement of heat. Think of it this way, if you have ever gone swimming during the day the water was colder than the air but as night begins to fall and cools the air the water become warmer than the air. The same thing happens in the oceans, that heat is moved by the water currents, which explains why northern Europe is generally warmer in the winter time than America. The melting of the ice caps and Greenland will throw this cycle off, again causing in the least case scenario disruption in the growing cycle and the worst case scenario and ice age.

Either way global warming is here and we (humans) are a big part of the problem.

I learned years ago that the earth's climate was constantly changing, like Illinois used to be the bottom of a semi-tropical sea. Apperently they left that out of Algore's 4th grade textbook. Damn Tennessee educational system has let us all down.

Your bullshit meter is off the charts. There are very few actual climatolgists who agree with man made global warming. Most of those who do work for or collect a grant from the government, so they tow the corporate line so to speak. There is a petition going around that was signed by over 2000 scientists in the climate field that refutes your arguement. Harry Volkman, founder of the weather channel, has a pending lawsuit against Al Gore for his B.S. about global warming. The fact is that no one has enough data to claim one way or another that global warming even exists, and if it does, that humans are to blame.

A few hundred years ago people were having this same argument about if the earth was round and if the earth was really the center of the universe. The Republicans of their day, the Catholic Church, screamed "heretic" at Galileo and caused him all sorts of problems. He was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy," forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

Fast forward a few hundred years and the Catholic church makes an apology to the long dead Galileo and says that telescope thing Galileo invented might be worthwhile after all.

This debate among the conservative and liberal peoples today concerning global warming, climate change or whatever is similar.

Mankind will learn within a century whether "climate change" is junk science or a reality that some future generation must deal with.

As it is, anything that is so passionately debated by the right and left bores me in short order. Both the political right and left bore me terribly. CNN and Fox are both worthless and both serve only to further political agendas and thus cannot be trusted.

GLOBAL WARMING...The weather pattern here is a result of the JET STREAM in the upper atmosphere actually PREVENTING the warmer temps from reaching us, as it is actually shaped more like it is during the winter months. If you'll look at THE REST of the country, you'll ifnd the PACIFIC NORTHWEST reacing temps in the triple digits. THAT, my highly educated friends, is NOT normal.
Atmospheric testing has shown HIGHER than normal levels of CO2, NITROGEN and OTHER HEAT CONDUCTING GASES.
I am sure a few of us have travelled on vacation, and noticed the following:
Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting—for example, Montana's Glacier National Park now has only 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910. In the Northern Hemisphere, thaws also come a week earlier in spring and freezes begin a week later.

Coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature, suffered the worst bleaching—or die-off in response to stress—ever recorded in 1998, with some areas seeing bleach rates of 70 percent. Experts expect these sorts of events to increase in frequency and intensity in the next 50 years as sea temperatures rise.

An upsurge in the amount of extreme weather events, such as wildfires, heat waves, and strong tropical storms, is also attributed in part to climate change by some experts.

Just cuz it ain't happening here, don't mean it ain't happening.

That's like saying if dude ain't robbing you in plain view it ain't happening.

I’ll do my best to explain it. Think of the earth as a series of systems in balance with each other, sort of like the Chinese concept of yin/yang, these systems have developed over the course of millions of years.

Your question asks about the climate system which is affected by the sun, ocean, and position of the earth. As the suns energy hits the earth the closest part of the earth heats up faster than those parts that are farther away. Thus the equator is hotter than the poles. Greenland’s position on earth places it the arctic pole thus the ice that covered the village is natural.

The earth also has a system for carbon dioxide (CO2) plants absorb the gas to grow and decaying animals and plants release CO2. The earth needs CO2 in the atmosphere in order to maintain/regulate its average temperature without the earth would be too cold to produce plant life as we know it. So basically the system is too little CO2 the earth is too cold, too much CO2 and the earth gets too hot. (There are people out there who claim this is false but they also claimed cigarette smoking is healthy for you.)

What has happened since the beginning of the Industrial Age is that man has been burning fossil fuels for warmth, energy, and production; this has released more CO2 into the atmosphere than the earth’s system can handle. Thus the earth’s mean temperature is getting warmer. This rise in temperature is causing the melting of ice in Greenland and it is man-made.

None of this data can be considered “preliminary” and if you can find a copy of “An Inconvenient Truth” page 66 has a perfect graph that shows the relationship between CO2 and temperature. I hoped this helped, I tried to keep it as simple as possible and if you need any more information, I’ll keep a lookout for them, but I could miss it because “Anonymous said…’ is a popular name on this blog…LOL

Uh, SCC, what about Seattle and Portland right now? All-time record high temps. Global warming means just that: Global averages. You always point it out when J-Fed or Shortshanks cook the numbers to make a political point that's not supported by reality. So why the double-standard for this science, where you and others act like local temps are the same as global averages?

No one location can be held up as speaking for the whole planet. So if you say, GW is bull because Chicago has a cold summer, I can respond that GW is real because Seattle has a hot summer. And you wouldn't buy that argument, because it's bull.

It's the globe, not just where we happen to live. Melting glaciers worldwide. We're far enough above sea level that we won't flood, but in 30 years or so, I wouldn't want to be a retiree on the Florida coast. . .

By the way you are wrong on your 50/50 assumption it’s more like 90/10, the 90 being in agreement that global warming/climate change is here. How do I know this? I asked the scientists at UIC, NIU, and Fermi Lab. I didn’t rely on Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, or Keith Olbermann to tell me what to think. Can they be wrong…yes, but that is why they continue to study the problem.

The problem isn’t too many people like me, the problem is too many like you who don’t open a book and assume that a kindergarten education is enough for you to get by on. By the way…I have a job.
