Gun Turn-In a Bust?

  • Turn in a gun and get a $10, $50 or $100 gift card, no questions asked. The city of Chicago sponsored another "gun buy back" event Saturday.

Officials see the effort as a way to get guns off the streets. However, at least one Chicago area activist thinks gang members use the program to take advantage of the city's generosity.

Residents had until 4p.m. Saturday to turn in their guns at any one of 27 participating churches across the city. Police had been optimistic that they would at least match last year's take of 6,000 guns. However, ABC7 Chicago learned Saturday evening that 1,883 guns were collected.

And now we're getting word that once again, BB guns and replica Soft-Air guns are being mixed among the publicity photos and passed off as real guns.

The city and Department have their excuses ready made for the drop off in numbers:
  • Officials say the reason they had to offer half of the amount they usually offer for guns and rifles is because they rely on donations to fund the program, and this year, donations were way down. That may help explain why so few guns were turned in this year compared to last year.
If people really wanted to get rid of guns, they'd do it for free. The fact is that when the police are minutes or more away, your gun may be the only thing standing between you and great bodily harm - maybe even death. And it pays to keep it around.

If the private donations are down for a program like this, what will happen to Daley's private donation progarm called the 2016 Olympics?

Now, lets just go with this for a minute......
The reality is the perception of safety in Chicago is non existent. Its bad when we had an old lady come to a south side church and try to get her gun back from last year. She was clear in her conversation to the Pastor that she wanted it back since her neighborhood is now full of riff raff. It was a sad but true conversation.

We have this view......the city could not have done any more to get anymore guns off of the street other than offer what another big city did and that was $200.00 a gun. They were serious. You now go from $100.00 to half of that in a city faced with increased crime and a horrible economy. The gang banges offered more than that to any citizen, truly no questions asked.

This is reality......I read this morning that the Superintednet was clear during an interview that all guns were tested and if any were used in the commission of a crime, it would be immediatlely addressed. How stupid. He then tried to say the guns were not traced. How is that Jodi? It either is or it isn't. The gang bangers and citizens of Chicago heard you! Does the Mayor not remember that this idiot said something like that last year at the end of the turn in? That is the reality of what happened. Even though grandma wants the gun out of the house, she doesn't want her only means of transportation, assistance and food to go to jail when she knows his gun was probably used in the commission of a crime. You are the STUPIDIST Superintendent in the hiosty of the world. Tell the truth media, this idiot killed the program with his speech last year and put the seal on it this year! They may be savages, but many are not stupid.

The reality is that with this new Superintendent and this new regime of Federal agents and shit for bosses, the community and the police themselves see this departement as a JOKE. Isn't that right Superinendent Weis and Chief of Staff Michael Masters.
You two idiots have singlehandedly created the newest addition to our reputation as "the worst police department in history." Those two are about $500,000.00 a year wasted for the city. We could have kept at least kept 10 people working for the city than kept this two shit for brains!

Every gun that was turned in at our location was garbage. I would be suprised if they could even fire a bullet.

Joe got pissed at my location when we gave him $50 for his gun and he stood there at the table as if we were going to give it back to him and let him walk out the door with it.

Hey, can anybody confirm that the city is using the replicas in their "junk on the bunk" photo spreads? Inquiring minds want to write unkind things about it, but this is the first I've heard of it.

I want to know how many $100 debit cards they gave out. I haven't heard any numbers for "assault weapons" yet.

I am against the handgun turn-in. I think it is BS. However, it is another example of how the Olympics IS COSTING US TAXPAYERS. They said donations were down so they couldn't give as much as last year for turn-ins. And where is the donation money? Tied up in the Olympics. Daley and his crew are putting the arm on everyone. The weapon turn-in is just the most visible example of of how donations are down , not just as a result of the economy, but because the big donaters can only give so much, and the Olympics is getting it.

Here is an idea. Perhaps the little moms and pops of the hood are keeping their guns because they finally realize they are going to need them. Duh. Hang on to your hats boys its going to be a bumpy ride.

I wish they would hold these "turn ins" at safer locations. I'm currently sitting on a stock pile but are afraid to venture out without ammo. Can I just mail them in like my gold? Is it wrong?

So here's a curiosity that I've had for a while...

What would happen if I, as a law-abiding suburbanite with a FOID and C&R FFL, hung out in front of one of the buyback locations and said "Gee, that's a nice gun, I'll give you $125 for it"? Every now and then I see pictures of little old ladies turning in their dead husband's war trophy, and it makes me sick.

Obviously I'd have to steer clear of handguns or "assault weapons" due to the BS city laws, but would there be anything else illegal about it? Or, laws be damned, should I just expect Pfleger to order his CPD security detail to make an example of me?

Now that is a very interesting question.

Your federal C&R FFL, non city residency, and IL FOID vs. city of chicago ordinances.

Might make for an interesting test case, if you have an NRA attorney by your side when you attempt to make a lawful, according to State of Illinois and Federal statutes, business transaction on the public way.

State Rights and Federal authorities vs. city of chicago's, Federal authorities vs. State Rights, civil and criminal issues, etc......

Send a surrogate.

Just make sure it's someone you both can trust and dislike.

Like a previous poster stated, many people are deciding to keep their weapons because they're probably going to need it to protect themselves, their families and property from the well armed savages that inhabit their community. Alot of folks have awoken to the fact that it's up to them to protect themselves. The only thing the city handgun ban is doing is making it easier for the animals to prey on law abiding citizens who have become prisoners in their own homes."If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." Citzens of this city need to take back their 2nd amendment rights under the constitution. This ordinance has failed to make the city safer. It has achieved the opposite. There needs to be some kind of citywide referendum introduced to stop this travesty. Don't let Daley and the city counsel legislate away your right to protect yourself!!
