Mismanagement

  • Mayor Daley said Monday he would eliminate 220 vacant city jobs, cancel cost-of living pay raises for 3,500 non-union employees and order those bureaucrats to take 24 unpaid days off to honor his promise to keep his hand out of taxpayers’ pockets in 2010.

Together with cuts in non-personnel spending, the latest round of bureaucratic belt-tightening will reduce spending by $64 million.

The remainder of the city’s $550 million budget gap is expected to be filled by raiding reserve funds generated by city asset sales. That’s a controversial move that threatens the all-important bond rating used to determine city borrowing costs.
The 220 jobs are a drop in the bucket - there's plenty of middle management that can be eliminated across the board in any number of departments. The belt-tightening is long overdue, but don't expect any sweeping change the way we didn't see any last time they "tightened" things up. The "reserve funds" are monies the mayor lets the connected people play with at taxpayer expense.

Here's a clue - how about the City trying to live within it's means?

And you don't see this as Daley playing the media and the city against us in the hopes the arbiter believes his bullshit and fucks us for raises?

That's what this shit is, media games to get to the arbiter. His sole purpose now is to do whatever it takes to try and fuck us out of raises using any lie and fabrication he can.

It'd be nice if you treated this shit for what it was.

Daley: Police hiring to stay slow
After hiring only 46 Chicago Police officers all year, Mayor Daley acknowledged Monday that the slowdown would continue in 2010, dramatically impacting the city's ability to fill 591 police vacancies

As of Oct. 9, the Chicago Police Department was 591 officers short of its authorized strength of 13,500 -- and that's not counting hundreds of other officers on duty- and non-duty disability.

http://www.suntimes.com/news/cityhall/1834266,CST-NWS-cops20.article

Is it just me, or do the number of vacancies seem to stay the same for the past two years? Are they keeping the average of 30 retirees each month on the books?

My husband says this job use to be fun but not any longer. He was so disgusted by J-Feds attitude to the "blue shirts" in DC. Would not even acknowledge them.

4 more weeks and he is pulling the pin and we are out of the City.

I have never heard Daley poormouth so much as this last month or so. He complained before about not having money, but not to this degree. It sure does sound like he's "wearing his old raggedy clothes" for the benefit of the arbitrators.

Be ready to lose any pay raise and you can forget about a retro check. He's claiming he's broke and until someone makes him open up the books he will win. The feds and everyone else just looks the other way when it comes to Daley. Meigs Field fiasco says it all! Nothing happened to him then and nothing will happen to him now. Why do you think we havent heard about Vanecko and his military son Patrick, who is hiding in Russia, for the last two months. Here's why they are DALEY's and are UNTOUCHABLE!!!!!

Daley is obviously tainting the arbitration process by using the local media to spread his fiscal budgetary woes.

Daley's bold theft from the city's taxpayers is criminal. Sitting on "rainy day" funds is a sham.

Daley is engaged in union busting while he ignores management, both middle and upper, to run up the unnecessary wages paid on the backs of the common or unskilled workers. His city is not HIS city, it belongs to the taxpayers and the sales he's been making to outside buyers is going to bankrupt the city's future.

Why can't the leadership at FOP at least address, in the same local media, that Daley is not only exploiting the press as always but also he is intentionally in violation of fair labor practice.

The man is totally out of control.

If scrapping jobs is so crucial, why did this Dept. promote RW to cmdr and send her to the Academy? It's not like she had a big impact on training.
The previous ADS managed to run the place without a cmdr, so why did someone high up in WEISel's cabinet decide to overstaff the place with two levels of command for all of 46 trainees hired this year? Daley isn't sincere about anything. Those 'Group __' Detective Division Deputy Chief jobs are all a bunch of BS too, and everyone knows it. Cut the fat there too, Shortshanks, and maybe you'll be taken seriously.

That is not icluding the aldercreature salaries. Who knows how to start referendum? SCC should lead the charge. FOP will not

Property taxes should go up. The city is no different than any other business, when costs go up you have to reduce costs or increase revenue and unfortunately for us raising revenue means taxes. However, a RESPONSIBLE mayor would have afforded small increases over time rather than put the city in the quagmire it faces now. When the increase comes through it will be huge.

I know a lot of this is smoke and mirrors for the contract negotiations but we are way overdue for a tax increase outside the usual school board, park, etc...raises, and it will be ugly when it comes due. Of course those facing 24 unpaid furlough days basically got the same as a tax increase only much larger. Figure an average daily pay of $150 (conservative I know) X 24 days = $3600.

Something’s got to give and it will be sooner rather than later and it will not be pretty.

We can save a hell of alot of money just in the Police department. Why do we need all the first deputies, assistant deputy superintendents for every bureau, chiefs for every unit plus deputy chief, commanders and so on. We've got more overpaid do nothing chiefs than indians. Realign the department, cut at least 25% of the exempts and there would be more money for the things we need. But first get rid of Weis and the extra 150,00 dollars a year wasted. If they paid him what he's worth a new recruit would make more money.
