Still Not Getting It

We've been taking a lot of heat in the comment sections yesterday for our stance on the G-20 people. We've been misquoted, called names, challenged, etc. And people are still trying to defend the actions of a few idiots.

We assume the supervisors on the scene passed a promotional test at some point. Or at least a part of promotional test seeing as how "merit" pretty much skews Part 2 of any test. And we know from our own experience that the order on Processing Persons Under Departmental Control has been a large part of a few exams we've taken. This is indefensible. We have yet to see even a tiny argument that makes any sort of sense.
  • Policy to take photos of a prisoner? In a controlled environment for booking and ID purposes. This wasn't that.
  • Mass arrest? Of one person? You've got to be joking.
  • The prisoner was a willing participant? Try running that one by the Supreme Court. You've already restricted his movement, you think the Court is going to say he had any sort of freedom at all? Not likely.
  • No time on the job hair-gels did it all? Not even close.
  • You never did anything stupid so you must be a pussy copper? We never denied doing anything stupid - but we were wise enough to not take pictures of it and smart enough to learn from others' mistakes. Who doesn't know about cameras everywhere? Especially in a strange city?
  • If everyone keeps their mouth shut, they'll never find out? Two shifts of coppers, in a known intersection, with an actual arrest that has some one's name on the report somewhere? Stevie Wonder could pick that platoon out.
Yeah, we joke about throwing the cuffs on some jagoff and tossing them in the car and taking them to the station. It's routine. But do you ever stop to realize the awesome power we've been granted by the state? We can remove someone from the streets and completely deny them the freedoms granted them by the Constitution of the United States. Call it what you want, but that is a power not granted out of hand to just anyone. That is why there are Rules, Regulations, General Orders of all stripes, Legal Bulletins and everything else. The system was built to be completely at odds with the monarchy of the day.

Most of the people who show up at these G-20 summits are anarchists, protesters, grievance-mongers of all stripes. They all have cameras (which are better than anything the Department fields), they all have agendas (with media machines to maximize exposure) and they are all trained to provoke a reaction for publicity and lawsuits (which is likely what this was).

So while our post was written out of anger, disgust and frustration with the actions of a few, we'll stand by the message - stop doing stupid shit and making it that much harder on the vast majority of us trying to make a living in what was once a respectable profession.

SCC,

I don't always agree with you, but you are RIGHT ON regarding your comment about "the awesome power of the state".

Of course I am a cop and a libertarian so I'm a somewhat scarce breed of critter. I have an instinctive mistrust of both the "goodness" and "intelligence" of authority. Even great cops are going to make mistakes so discretion and the rules need to be followed when making arrests or in this type of situation.

Sometimes one needs to just take a deep breath and assess the situation. No one and I mean no one directly involved in this incident did that.

Arresting and posing some college kid for a shot like that is beyond bad judgment. It's fucking stupid.

The kid claims he was coming back with a pizza and was not protesting and since he's a local I'm guessing he may be telling the truth. It's the outsiders who cause most of the problems at these conferences.

Treating it like a trophy or a party pic? Please.

As for the long list of excuses some of you are coming up with that's bullshit too. Grow up.

I expect cops will make mistakes. This is just plain stupidity.

Everyone involved needs to take some time and any exempts should be returned to their civil service rank and/or encouraged to retire.

I generally feel SCC is a bit overly protective of cops who screw up, but this time I think he may be just a bit too harsh in his judgment. Just a bit. Perhaps a skosh. Perhaps a skosh, plus a tad harsh.

Anyway, it's a question of degree of punishment not whether it is deserved.

I don't give a rat's ass about wood shampoo policing and what your grandaddy did as a Park District cop back in the 50's

The old days are gone and they weren't that good anyway. It's not the video or the pics that are the problem ladies and gents. It's the actions caught on the pics and video.

Try to act like a professional and if you can't either retire or try to get a partner who will help you avoid screwing up when you are having a bad day. When you get enough seniority get off the street and find some nice job at 35th street.

At least that way you will be less likely to harm anyone or the department.

There was no excuse for this silly behavior. There is no need for you to justify your position, although I'm glad you clarified it to the various folks who are of the belief that the police are always right. Or that they can bluff their way out of it.

Discretion? Guess they forgot that. Emmissaries of the Department? Nah, they were on a macho vacation. No way to investigate? Hah! Did you see the little one on the left trying to drift away from this extremely poor judgement? Can't wait to give it up.

It will be great for the Supervisors to be identified, and see if they are some of the meritorious clowns.

Keep up the good work. It was my Department too, and I still wear my old tee shirts, and still try to show some pride regarding my 3+ decades of service.

It is hard to defend Police Officers who are just stupid, I guess we all acted stupid in our careers and didnt get caught but after the Rodney King incident we should have had a wake up call that the police are the bad guys to many. Many young careers are viewed in the photo but so often with youth comes poor judgement. These Officers should have been instructed before representating the uniform on proper conduct viewed across the Nation. There is no excuse except being stupid.

Now everyone else may have been taking an innocent picture, when jag-off was thrown into the picture, possibly at the request of white shirt. So I don't think it was a collaborative effort by everyone. The way I see it there are about 3 people with some explaining to do......But I wasn't there and what the fuck do I know?

"Call it what you want, but that is a power not granted out of hand to just anyone."

******************************

That "power" as you exhault it SCC was and is given to anyone able to pass the simplest of tests.

That "power" you hold so high comes with the automatic assumption of guilt, that the possessor is a born liar and thug.

The "power" rests in the law, nowhere else. Only the law is able to dictate freedoms and penalty. Only the law stands in court as the standard to measured up to by anyone who stands before it.

Only tha law can grant people the necessary use of it's own power to bring criminals before it, since it takes a human being to grab another.

The law granted extremely limited use it ITS power to a few people who could pass a grade school test because by that same law, someone has to be hired and paid to do it.

Anyone can do what we do SCC, because nowadays the law that gave us a miniscule use of it's own power is bastardized and weilded like a baby's rattle by an even lower life form than us, the lowly attorney.

So don't think we hold any "power" to do anything to anyone anymore SCC. Because there will always be someone else using that same law against YOU and I every day just to prove to us that we don't really control shit.

Remember that, and be humbled by it because we're all still civil servants, and servants take it up the ass when the massa says so.

As someone else said SCC sometimes go too far in defending poor behavior by cops, at other times he/she does not go far enough. This statement however, is right on the money. Like it or not, the federal and state constitutional protections of people exist for good reasons-violating them is dumb and is done at your own peril. Doing something stupid, like on the video, and then making a record of it is doubly dumb. I would love to know who the supervisor is. I bet most of those involved treated him as a hero.

The news reports I've read state that this kid was a passer by, which obviously many here would find that hard to believe. But I've watched a few clips from Pittsburgh one in which there were normal civilians, standing on the corner or waiting at a stop, with the protests going on a few blocks away, bicycle police roll up and start spraying people in their face who had just had their hands in their pockets. Maybe these people should have gotten out of there (all discussions of civil liberties vs. police power to keep peace aside), my point is, these are not professional protesters baiting the police, they're bystanders out living their lives in their city, and I can certainly believe the guy on his knees was too.

It is the responsibility of the white shirt who took the photo (no stripes on the sleeves) to immediately remove the subject from the picture or refuse to take it. If that action was on the video it would at least show someone had some sense. No matter what you may think of exempt that ran the detail he does have a reputation of having been the police. Using on duty officers for a private security job then lying about her actions. Numerous violations with Brust knowledge. The result? A promotion to another unit. Exempts always have a different level of punishment: none. Whether you carry a firearm through a airport security checkpoint or own a condo used for drugs and guns. Clout rules and protects the exempts. A blue shirt would be at call back for years. Maybe Ruthie could make another ethics video for us.

I have to believe that in any group of that size there had to be at least a few people thinking that "this is not a good idea", but the organizational culture took over and they said nothing.

Supervisors and senior people are supposed to be less subject to the mob/herd mentality.

If I was a big boss and saw this kind of thing, I would give a major butt chewing to the senior people present. Its up to them to keep the newer guys from doing stupid.

I cannot even imagine what would possess a supervisor to participate in this kind of thing. Thats the guy who ought to get the brunt of any punishment, because he failed in his duties to the organization, to the people he was supposed to be supervising, and most importantly, to the public.

I have a hard job too. And when I break the rules or break a code of ethics, I get fired. And there is a good chance that I may never work in the industry again because I have proven that I can't follow rules.
In the case of the police, the rules are called "laws" or "the constitution." Shame on everyone involved in this. And shame on anyone who dares offer a thin, hollow defense.

Once again it seems that the over-opinionated that read this blog are the only ones furthering this issue. The media had its run with it, time and money will be wasted settling the aftermath with lawyers and the courts.

But still, "morons", "assholes", etc. All have an opinion and are entitled to it. But it is the opinion of this author that the more you poke at the ambers the greater the chance of another fire flaring up. Enough already.

This photo op was a bad result of an opportunity. For all those who are denouncing the idea of helping out another Department and making some OT in the process, stop. Given the opportunity many of you would do the same. Try to remember that at every St. Judes there are coppers from all over that come to participate as a sign of unity and respect. Remember the outpouring of support and the ultimate sacrifices like the two Coppers from Milwaukee killed in the helicopter crash a couple of years ago responding to the murder of a Policeman. Are those the only admirable times to help another Department out, when it is reactionary?

Again this would go back to the issue that the bulk of the comments on this blog are narrow minded and quick judgment much like that as the witness", "preacher", reporter or president who makes a snap blanket comment on how "stupidly" the Police acted.

Stop speculating on why things happened, especially if you weren't there. Instead don't let it happen again. Granted it was a failure on the part of the management team to get the kid out of the photo, but it goes back to an earlier post referring to the lack of adhering to rank and file order on this Department and basic responsibilities. The system allows for the "buddy" type boss to be promoted or the clout-heavy good spot to taint moral of those who are in the trenches daily. It also allows for many to have the "entitlement" attitude at all levels which then break down the basic idea of someone leading troops who actually follow directions. Again, if you are assigned a job, and it is moral, legal, and within the Department orders, do it and stop looking for a way to get out of it, duck early, or do it half assed. That comment is for all ranks. Take some pride in what you do, stop shirking responsibility and stop running to the FOP to hide behind. Leave the bitching for the bar or what ever other support group you need.

I agree with SCC in that with this job comes awesome power. It also comes with awesome responsibility. If you can manage both then perhaps you will get the respect and have the feeling of self-satisfaction. The action was a bad choice by a few that affects many, it was not responsible. Now it is up to the many to take action in being responsible in adhering that future events don't happen again.
