Where's the FOP Response?

Nice response by the CFD Union:
  • Press Release:

Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 response to call for unpaid time off for Chicago Firefighters/Paramedics

With regards to the suggestion of the City's administration and aldermen to have Chicago Firefighters and Paramedics take furlough days off, I must first tell you that the City and the Union agreed at the start of our contract negotiations that we would not negotiate in the press. Unfortunately, the City is not able to live up to this arrangement. Recent public statements by the Mayor and members of the City Council give us no choice but to respond to their recent published remarks.

It is obvious that fires, accidents, hazardous materials incidents and the need for quick and competent firefighter and emergency medical response do not take a holiday or a furlough day.

The taxpayers of Chicago need to know that when they call for help in their darkest hour, there will always be fully staffed emergency service ready to respond. Chicago Firefighters and Paramedics provide protection for these always existing dangers, but we must also have the manpower and capability to respond quickly and successfully to an emergency and potential catastrophe. The world we live in has changed, and we cannot afford and should not gamble on the public's safety. The safety of our citizens and also of our responders is paramount and we must not jeopardize their well-being by reducing fire and emergency medical services.

The motto of the Chicago Fire Dept. is “We’re there when you need us” but that may well not be the case if reductions and cuts are implemented.

    Tom Ryan

    President

    Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2
And the FOP response?

Pretty much summarized right there. We're all for taking the high road, but when the mayor and his lap dog media types are the only ones talking, guess who the public is listening to? Silence isn't doing us any favors at this point and being gentlemen in a mudslinging contest means the police are the only ones covered in mud. It isn't like the arbitrator is penalizing the city and Shortshanks for their underhanded techniques. We don't win any points for taking it in the shorts day after day after day. Step up and make a statement FOP. Even if it's just on your website.

FLOP is not going to respond because it's in Shortshank's pocket. Chicago police officers don't have any representation. FLOP's response will be that negotiations are going on and they can't say anything. Useless shitheads!

FOP pledged allegiance to shorty and expects to be rewarded with cush do nothing, no accountability jobs to feather their own nests when the membership turns their asses out.

Have you ever called FOP about anything and get the answer "well there is only so much we can do" what a bunch of BS. Remember if you see any of these asswipes from FOP run for office next time mark the box for the next Candidate. At times It has been said on SSC site "we have nothing" on FOP site it should say "we do nothing".

You'd think Donapuke would talk to his buddies down at the national lodge and they'd all get together and make a concerted statement against the shit Daley's pulling....

But, since all FOP presidents have slept with Daley to get afterlife jobs they couldn't get on their own, we'll just eat Daley's shit once again and hope the arbiter can see clearly through Daley's bullshit and hopefully put aside all his poor boy bullshit and give us a raise comparable to what New York has received.

To what end this press release? The general public sentiment toward the police can be described as antipathy at best. The mayor's salvos in the press are nothing but preaching to the choir. The people hate us, believe we are overpaid and would love to see us have to take days. But public sentiment is not going to determine our contract. While firing off a scathing press release may be cathartic for some, our only concern as a collective bargaining unit should be presenting our strongest case to the only person who's opinion matters -- the arbitrator.

Ok, I know any type of cohesion is all but impossible on this job anymore in terms of slow down, blue flu,not working CTA for anything less than OT,etc, but in light of the fact that this unpaid furlo thing is looming in the near future I have a way of making sure that the public sees exactly how NUTS this city and department have become. If and 'when' we get this shoved down our unwilling throats all we need to do is follow our rights (assigned in our contract....the old one) and make good and sure we don't go out there riding 99 on 3rd and 1st watches for officer safety reasons... We all know the if the department squeezes us into an unpaid days off situation they're going to try and run 99 units all over to cover (kind of like now) so I figure if the public has oh..2 two person beat cars per sector citywide some buts will pucker. This solution doesn't take money out of anyones pocket but sends a clear message. That having been said I hope it doesn't come to that and the ring masters running this circus just use all the $$$ that we had 4 an "olympics" that doesn't exist now (strange haha) and learn how to really budget thier...OUR money and get some efficient use out of it.......who am I kidding..I'm done.

I believe another march on City Hall may be in order. Also why don't we as a group start working precincts against Daley? A few hours here and there with literature very friendly. If all the prople who showed up at the rally pitched in we could easily cover every pct in the city door to door. I really believe that this will get the attention of Daley. The other unions did it when they got pissed about Wal Mart and they knocked out 6 (?) alderman. Now these babys wont go near another Wal mart vote with a ten foot stick out of fear. Here's a suggestion. Instead of paying all these officers exempt pay, why not hire a media relations firm and a labor attorney to handle the media and the contract negotiations for the union. With a three month evaluation on performance, just to keep them from getting corrupted by city hall. We need a strong voice and the money is there to afford the best.
Stay Safe.

The only way to get people in the FOP that will give us fair representation will be for the guys with less then 10 years on to get involved. They must begin filling up the hall for meetings and they must begin to learn the by-laws of the union.

The current union is nothing more than a good old boys network. They are only worried about themselves. They are kissing up to shortshanks so they can land in an easy spot when they retire.

Also, I know this will piss a few people off, but we must elect every single detective out of the FOP they have been negotiating contracts for themselves and always seem to leave patrol flap in the wind.

Also, we need to get everyone with 18 or more years out of office because all they are doing is buying time so they can leave to the easy spot that they sold their soul for.

This department went from the oldest to the youngest in less then a decade. The younger guys are the ones who should be stepping up, not the old timers. The old timers are just attempting to set themselves up after retirement and trying to sweeten their pension benefits. If the young guys do not step up, there will not be a pension to sweeten for them.

This is a serious problem we have within the FOP and until the younger coppers step up this department is doomed.
