BOHICA Street Parkers

We sense another drop in Shortshanks' bottom-of-the-barrel ratings just around the corner:
  • Here's the breakdown of what to expect:The loop area, bound by Lake Michigan to the East, Wacker Drive to the North and West, and Congress Parkway to the South, will see the highest parking rates, at $4.25 per hour.

It'll cost $2.50 per hour to park in the Central Business District outside the Loop, an area bounded by Lake Michigan to the East, North Avenue to the North, Halsted to the West, and Roosevelt Road to the South rates.

In all other areas of the city, rates will be $1.25 per hour.
Anyone else noticing a distinct and noticeable drop off in people parking at meters or blocks with pay boxes? We'll just note that we've been having no problem parking the squad car at lunch locations for the entire autumn and winter so far. No more grabbing the crosswalk, hydrant or bus stop for a quick bite. Makes us wonder.

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone in the comments who got the sarcasm and silliness part of the above paragraph. Geez, with Revenue ticketing marked cars, unmarked cars and anything with an FOP medallion on it, you think we'd seriously park a car anywhere near a hydrant, crosswalk or bus stop?

Lighten up people - it's a freaking blog.

Wait until every neighborhood is permit parking. It is coming boys and girls and coming soon. That is why the City Sticker and the parking permit were combined. By 2012 everyone will be buying a City Sticker and paying a fee to park on their own street.

Come into Chicago to do business?
Not any more.

That's what happens when you push parking rates to obscene levels. Couple that with the highest sales tax rates and meeting downtown for a business lunch is ludicrous.

And it's a LOT more than $4.25 an hour. Parking in a lot costs anywhere from $26.00 - $32.00 if you park for 2 hours or more around lunch.

Just saving on parking makes it worth meeting in OakBrook or some other suburb. (preferably NOT in Cook County - might as well save a couple % tax on the bill as well)

How does that relate to all of you? NO revenues - no raises.

There has to be a dramatic change in Chicago becoming "business-friendly" again. Otherwise - double property taxes and start making those who live within the city pay for the services they get.

Yes - you are subsidized by the suburbs

Don't think so? Compare your property taxes with those who live in the suburbs.

People I talk to are disgusted and refuse to park in daley's miserable pay areas. At any rate, I have not written one ticket for an expired parking receipt and I will not for the remainder of my police career.

And to top it all of, the money daley got for this is all gone! Supposed to last for many years and now it is gone in one year!

But wait, daley promised to replace it! Hey, it's a daley promise, handle accordingly.

It's only $2 per hour in NYC or DC.

We have got to keep Shortshanks, or his replacement from selling the Water Department and Garbage Collection.

We, the entire city needs to talk about and get ready for the day when we will be cheering the indictment or the election results or when City Hall is draped in mourning bunting. We need to get the power out of the hands the Daley-Burke-Stroger-Mell-Obama Crime Family.

I have noticed a lot less shoppers in my business district.

The citizens that I do talk to all have said that they shop in the suburbs more whenever possible and will VOTE against Mayor Daley next time around.

I work in a once busy shopping district on the Northside of town where the money is, not the bust out South or West side of town with freeloaders and Reverends running around spewing garbage from their mouths!

These are exactly the people you would NOT want to piss off!
Actual VOTERS with jobs and paying high taxes for little to no city services, as compared to the folks on the LINK program!

Most citizens seemed angry and genuine in their thoughts!

I agree. Not a class act there. I messed up plenty over the years, but one of the things I will never do is park illegally for a personal or lunch. I will walk a block or go somewhere else before illegally parking. I just cannot justify it.

Once had a boss ask me if I was trying to hide the squad, when it was legally parked a half-block away and around the corner. He told me that I could not possibly keep an eye on the department vehicle with it parked that far away.

Hey, the heck with that! There isn't anything in the emm-effer to steal anyway and if they want to steal that piece of crap vehicle, they can have it. I give a damn! I am hoping that one day the piece of crap gets tagged! And tagged with anti-Daley rhetoric! I would be proud to drive it!

OT but worthy of comment.

We are all aware of the exempts taking 24 days off unpaid next year. Too fucking bad. However, you may not be aware that the exempts have been assured by the City law department that the days off will not count against their pension, their pension will be reflected by the amount of their budgeted position, regardless of what they make. The result of this will be exempts receiving a full pension on their budgeted amount but actually paying in 10% less each pay check and the city matching 10% less each time. The only people who get shorted here are the other members of the pension, who pay their full share. It is likely that this furlough day nonsense will go on for a few more years, at least. This money which the exempts are shorting us is going to add up at the expense of the collective bargaining members. Where is the Pension Board Rep's on this one. How can the city guarantee what our pensions pay out? Is the city making up the difference?

We need some answers here. This is our money which the city and the exempts are getting a 10% discount on at our expense. I don't want to hear any crying that the chosen ones already have to take an exrta 24 days off. They sold their soul for the gold star, now wallow in it. If its so bad, turn it in and get paid as a Lt. or Captain. Either way, I refuse to once again take the hit in my already depressed pension so some political hack gold star doesn't go hungry.

I left the city six years ago for security, peace of mind and more space. I do come to the city once or twice a month for theater or diner, but dind myself coming in less and less. I avoid, at all costs, downtown and the gold coast because of high parking rates. It is not unusual to pay 19 bucks to park for a play or 15 for dinner or 16 for a movie. Then you have to deal with potholes ( last year cost me big bucks) and beggers on the street. The pay box system actually has freed up somne spots on the street, a good idea. Too bad the city isnt managing themselves. Yes, i can see permit parking to spread across the city to all areas.

This is all part of the plan to turn Chicago into the next Detroit. If people are not parking in the business districts, they are not patronizing the businesses in those areas. The business person will eventually have to close his/her store. The building owner will not be able to rent the space. And pretty soon the area starts to look like Detroit. The reason Chicago has such vibrant neighborhoods is because of the business districts in most areas. People want to live where there are amenities such as shopping, doctor's offices, and restaurants. If the businesses close down, people will no longer want to live in the area and will move to places where there are such amenities that are accessible.
Gouging people for parking fees is one of the most stupid, regressive things a municipality can do. The reason shopping centers offer free parking is to increase their tenants share of the business and make them more competitive. If you want to chase the businesses and the tax revenue they generate away, charge for parking. What is really shortsighted is that the City would earn far more from their share of the sales tax revenues generated by increasing business rather than by raising the parking rates.
Time to get ready to get out of Dodge.

I talked to some of the merchants on Lincoln Avenue (from Linclon and Western intersection to Lincoln and Irving Park road) and here are their business results. Before the parking meters were installed, their businesses were already suffering. Sales were down as much as 15% to 25%. OUCH. When the city decided to privatize the meters and have citizens pay outrageous fees, all of a sudden foot traffic in their stores dropped dramatically and sales went down the tubes.

The city will privatize the water system. They will also make you pay for parking on your own street. That is why they combined the city sticker along with the permit fee. Even though I have four years on the job, once my wife finishes up her nursing degree, we are moving to places that are less taxing; Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia or Nevada. And they have better weather than Chicago.

That is the goal, of course - a drop-off in the number of spaces taken all day because it's almost free, so why not. Turnover in the spots, and something a little closer to a market rate for parking, so we're not subsidizing drivers.

Really, $4.50/hour means short-term parking on the street remains far cheaper than short-term parking in a lot.

Remember those good people who went to Copenhagen on their own dime to try and stop the Olympics ? Well they are thinking about maybe becoming a real political origination. Check out their website, answer their survey.

We need to be organized if we want them crooks in city hall out; otherwise we’re just all talk as usual. We saw what happened to our petition, it got no where because we had no organization. Most of us were too frightened to reveal ourselves like Ret. Sgt. Northen did because we’re terrorized and browbeaten by these absolute criminals. We need an organization and these good people have the start of one.

Just think about it, check them out.

Lets free ourselves from subjugation by organized crime once and for all !!!

Why go to Macy's, Bloomingdales's, Nordstroms, etc. downtown and pay those ridiculous prices to park when you can go to the burbs and park for free in a huge lot. What are these idiots in city hall going to do next???

12/30/2009 10:36:00 PM

I park my ass right here in front of the computer and order from some place that does not charge Chicago, Cook County or Illinois tax and then I don't pay to park because I don't drive to an overpriced store and then it gets delivered for free.

I don't give a shit what they charge in Chicago or what the parking rates will be. I am only here for the pension and in a very few years I will leave this place in my rear view mirror.

I give up, they win, I am definitely moving, just as soon as that pension check begins to be direct deposited in my bank account.

Then, there will never be another cent of this family's money ever spent in Illinois.

I will be moving to civilization, where polite, decent people can live in relative peace. There are such places, just do some searching. Leave Chicago to the daley's, the wealthy and the Section 8's.

Really, $4.50/hour means short-term parking on the street remains far cheaper than short-term parking in a lot.

Thank you Avis LaVelle, but still more expensive than any other major city. I shop in the suburbs and online.

Whoever runs against Daley can run on the parking scandal (compare to the dummy Bilandic who said we didn't have a snow plowing problem). Jane beat him on that alone.

The campaign slogan could be stop him before he sells the lake.

agree.

You sound like the biggest beatoff in the world...If I worked with you and you parked a fucking block away in JAN and told me that shit you just said.... I would smack the fuck out of you and take the keys, park like the police should park and make you walk... you do nothing asshat! My god did you even read that after you wrote it...."steal the squad car, tag it" thats what you would rather see than park illegally...you fucking pusy ass cop no wonder these motherfuckers are not affraid of us anymore cuz of dick heads like you!

Yes - you are subsidized by the suburbs

Don't think so? Compare your property taxes with those who live in the suburbs.

Let's not forget that taxpayers in the suburbs can send their kids to public schools especially during highschool. That's the difference between my $2800.00 per year in taxes and their $7,000.00. Actually the Chicago taxpayer gets fucked because I'm pretty sure highschool tuition is alot more than $4200.00.

I'm not a cop and work for the City. Our workplace is FUBAR. Too many management hacks, lazy political dogs, and too few actual workers.

Happy New Year to all of Chicago's finest.

A grateful citizen from 16.

I don't do a fucking thing in this city. Other than Superdawg and Dino's. Shop in Niles or Norridge Dine and Muvico in Rosemont GFY Shortshanks

12/30/2009 03:34:00 PM

Boycott Muvico in Rosemont. They charged a 20 year old girl with pirating a film. The kid was taping part of her sister's birthday celebration with a cell phone. The manager is an ass. Don't patronize them.

not a class act-- boo hoo hoo--- park the car legally even if it means a half block walk--- you must be some stroke who worked the street for a whole six months and then went inside--- you always park the squad right in front of your lunch spot--- you can keep an eye on it and can get to it in a hurry if someone is getting their ass kicked and needs help.... some of you crybabies really need to take up drinking and getting laid once in awhile--- it will improve your disposition and make you quite acting like a bunch of pussies....

What if it was your mother who had to walk around a paddy wagon park parked on a crosswalk in front of a restaurant?

People hate us enough without having to look at illegally parked cop cars when it is obviously isn't an emergency.

It is all about perception.

Surprise, surprise: Parking at O'Hare & Midway increased on 01 JAN 10, according to the Department of Aviation, "...to keep pace with the increase in street parking..." or something to that effect. Can anyone tell me why parking at the airports has to "keep pace" with street parking?

The people that TV channel 7 interviewed generally agreed that that's the normal deal in Chicago - no warning. One also indicated that he would no longer utilize airport parking.

That's life in Daley's Chicago. Bend over!
