Hubie on the Hotseat

  • In mid-October, Chicago Public Schools chief Ron Huberman made a special trip to Springfield to implore legislators to restore funding cuts that were aggravating an already painful budget season.

What he didn't mention to legislators was how he got there, in the literal sense. The schools chief drove himself in a 2009 Ford Escape hybrid that costs taxpayers more than $800 a month. That vehicle is in addition to the Crown Victoria that Huberman rides around in while in Chicago; the school district leases it for about $1,000 a month, not including the driver's pay. Huberman, who was appointed a year ago, makes $230,000 a year.
We recall he pretended to use the CTA when he worked there. But once he got out of that hell hole, we guess all pretense of being a mere commoner went out the window. Monique defends Hubie vigorously:
  • Huberman's car and driver can be used by his senior staff, spokeswoman Monique Bond said. His personal car is to get to and from work, weekend events and school-related trips to Springfield, she added. Bond said Huberman worked at least 36 weekend days in 2009 , and has taken a handful of trips to Springfield.
Try explaining that to the various employees taking layoffs and job cuts. Or even the exempts taking 24 unpaid days while this former patrol officer has two cars at his disposal. And as usual, Daley doesn't know shit. Amazing.

So, those two dozen or so employees who've got use of Hubie's car can just go snatch it off the street in Yuppieville and use it freely? Can't wait to see THAT happen in my lifetime!

This is a non-story. For goodness sake, the guy's CEO of the second largest school district in the country, I would hope that he has a company car. And he can't use both simultaneously, so what's the big deal? We're starting to sound like little kids here, "I wanna car, too!" Get promoted and you can have one. Man, there's so much more corruption and ineptitude going on and this is what the media gets all excited about? Yikes.

Jeez, my pool car has over 150,000 miles on it, it has almost a 20 year old light bar that is hard to see in daylight, has no computer or any of the new stuff Huberman promised years ago and is a rattling pile of shit.

I would love that Ford Crown Vic Huberman is driving as a second car.

But as daley has said, he doesn't have to worry when Huberman is in charge. He can sleep at night.

I don't mind the District giving Huberman a vehicle. Although, they should just buy something instead of leasing. Of course I'm sure some Mayoral crony probably has the leasing contract.

You can get a decent vehicle for $20,000 now.

I could make a joke about CPS providing him with a Wienermobile, but that would be inappropriate and wrong so I won't.

I'm all about being politically correct and one day I expect to have my own leased city vehicle because of that and many other fine traits I possess.

Stop your whinning and go get your own degrees. Do you really think this guy would have lasted as long as he has in Daley's political area just on "clout." You make your own "luck", partly by being very good at what you do. If this is the worst political scandal he gets into, he's pristine and he certainly has "earned his way."

What the media should've been hounding on is the fact that Luberman was eerily quiet - almost non-existent - when all the shit went down at/in/around Fenger.

Unless I missed it somewhere along the line, I didn't hear a peep out of the "Chicago Public Schools Chief" regarding Darrion Albert's death or the out-of-control savagery that occurs on a daily basis in the CPS system. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe Ronnie "The Lube" was too busy picking out interior colors and signing the paperwork for his TWO taxpayer-provided vehicles to be bothered with at least feigning interest in Chicago's "future".

Sgts given an order to ck and log two camera eqipped units each tour by the clueless commander. after two days of this silliness it comes to light that only 2 to 4 units with these cameras are not down in shop on repairs/or cameras are malfunctioning more often than not, so the order is verbally rescinded. oh, of course we are using the bones/remains of decade old pdts. 019 can't get old or new car computers for some mystery reason. Regular car goes in for repair and pool with 130,000 miles on it with no heat is given. What the hell is wrong with these bosses in A/3?? Can we get some young blood with management skills out here please! or just working equipment and we ll continue to run circles around the white shirts

Maybe now, before the Sun-Times does another investigative piece, Duh' Mayor will turn his attention to the CPS career academy high schools and how they should be used to prepare students for careers rather than give them a 'blow-off' shop class to get an easy grade in.

Currently, at most of the CPS academies, shop classes are offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Sophomores are given (1) shop class, Juniors (2) and Seniors (3). And, one of the biggest wastes of taxpayers' money is giving students the 3rd period of shop in their senior year as several students leave for Education Through Careers (ETC) work study after their 2nd shop class and leave the shops classes basically empty.

But, wait! 90-95% of the students leave for jobs unrelated to their shop classes, working at McDonald's Burger King, Game Stop, Target, and clothing stores to name a few.

Why is this a waste of money? It's because the teacher's get another 20-25% in pay based on their base salary for 'babysitting' the students left in their class.

CPS high school teachers get paid on a step scale for years service and the amount of education they have.....for example:

(8) Prosser shop teachers have (6) periods each, (1) period more than regular classroom teachers....

......the (8) Prosser shop teachers with 5+ years of teaching experience are paid on the average $80K to teach (5) classes

....according to Chicago Teacher Union (CTU) rules: every extra teaching period over (5) teaching class periods increases the teacher's pay by an additional 20-25% of their base pay....

For example, at Prosser Academy, all (8) of their shop teachers with 5+ years of experience make over $100k/year. And, without the extra 20-25% salary bump, each teacher would be averaging ONLY $80K/year.

Basically, the Prosser Career Academy shop teachers are getting paid an extra $20K each or a total of $160K to be 'babysitters.' And, taxpayers wonder where their taxes are going.

If you think I'm Bull Shi-ing you, go to the link below and and pay to check on the teacher's salaries on Prosser Career Academy.

*****Be sure to pay attention to each person's teaching area after you notice the principal makes $156K. And, the asst. principal (without an educational background, but, a medical background) makes $135K.

While some might think this is a non-story, it just might not be. Compare what Chicago does with other big cities. New York? Their school superintendent has a car for use during the day, but not a take home. There are hundreds of take home cars in city anc county government. Many, many in the police department alone. Most of them are not justified. And, the people who take home the cars should claim them on their income tax, but do not. Millions could be saved each years by eliminating unncecessary take home vehicles, plus insurance, gas, maintenance, etc. It is not about jealous people who do not have cars, but it is now about saving money to avoid layoffs and tax increases.

I would guess it is a mandated minority vendor that wins on this. For instance, if you wanted a case of paper towels, you had to order it through a mandated vendor who would charge the city four times as much as it would normally cost. Those vendors are either minority or city hall connected or both. Your taxes at work. Times this by the millions and wonder why we are broke.

Why does he need a take home car?? Doesn't the schools run just during the day? I didn't know that schools are a 24/ 7 day a week operation, like a hospital or police dept. What kind of emergency is there at 1:00 am Wednesday morning at a school that the school super needs to go to? The only one I can think of is a fire or break-in, and that would be handled by the appropriate agency at that time.

WASTE, YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT WASTE.....go no further than Huberman-led CPS

According to the Sun-Times, Huberman is going to have the 300, YES 300, vocational teachers evaluated to see if they're 'up to snuff'..a little like closing the barn door after the horses have gone' in terms of money being wasted on unqualified teachers, especially when shop teachers have been 'baby sitting' for an extra $20K at the minimum

Each vocational teacher teaches 6 periods a day (I mean gets paid for 6 teaching periods a day), while, regular high school teachers have a 5 period classload. The voc ed. teachers get an additional 25% of their base pay ($80K on average for 5 years of experience) for the 6th period

So, on average, CPS' 300 voc ed teachers X $20K (25% of their base pay of $80K = $6M .(most average $100K in yearly salary)

WHY IS THIS A WASTE OF MONEY? It's waste because most 6th periods of the day for each voc ed teacher are part of the seniors' 'triple-period voc ed classes' and is the last class of the day. (Sophomores have one period of voc ed and juniors two) Most 'senior' students leave for work study before the third period, cut, or the 5-6 students (25% of the class) left in the classes just sit and BS with the shop teacher as two periods are more than enough to finish the day's work.

For example, Prosser High school has 8 voc ed teachers making an additional $20K per extra period or $160K to 'baby sit' for one period/day. And, a ASTOUNDING 90-95% of Prosser's students don't follow a career in voc ed after they leave Prosser.
