Prayers for Cicero PD

The Cicero PD is suffering through an officer's suicide tonight. Details are sketchy and we won't be publishing any speculation or such.

The point of this post is to remind people that there is help somewhere. The men and women of the Chicago Police Department are blessed with a number of options and avenues available when it seems bleakest. Smaller Departments might not have the resources that we do, but that doesn't mean assistance is unavailable. Keep an eye on your co-workers. Talk to them. Maintain communication.

Prayers and well wishes only in this thread.

I had the fortunate opportunity of visiting Cicero P.D. for a prisoner pick-up. When I left there I felt proud to be a cop. I can't explain why. Very nice people, helpful front desk (unlike mine), cool cool cops. I'm sorry for your loss Cicero.

If you see someone who might be in trouble, reach out, don't fear the re-buff, if you are not comfortable reaching out find someone who is.

I didn't reach out 18 years ago and I still regret it.

My prayers are with this copper and their family. This is the worst thing these small children will endure and will be the one thing that will mold their lives. I hope they have services to assist families in need like this in Cicero. If not, I pray our conselors offer a hand.

I new 2 coppers that committed suicide. I don't know if it was just dumb luck that they had both been in my outer circle or God's way of reching out to me to offer some assistance. I saw they were troubled, but never did I think they would take their lives.

Lets stop whispering about each other and give each other a hand. We may all be in need in some way shape or form at some point in our lives! You may be surprised at who picks you up!

On behalf of the Cicero P.D. we thank you for posting a blog for one of our fallen P.O's. Mike was on 1st Shift and loved being a P.O which followed the footsteps of his recently passed Grandfather(Retired C.P.D.) Mike was a great guy who will be missed by many and will be in our prayers forever. Mike was a family man and his world revolved around his two beautiful twin daughters. It is a shame that his life has abruptly ended so please continue the support and pray for his family.

Again, thx for the support and remember that it doesn't matter what city, town or municipality we work for because ultimately were all the same and have to stick together in the type of world we live/work in today.
Respectfully,
Cicero P.O.

God bless, Office.

We had a streak of suicides on the CFD a year ago. One of them was a good friend and co-worker. Males tend to plan their suicides. Someone might really be troubled for a while, then seem to 'snap out of it' going to the other extreme. Being really helpful, courteous, wanting to take pictures with everyone, giving people stuff. Everyone should be informed on suicide prevention, it could save someones life. I wish I read up on it more. In every case, chemical imbalances are the cause. People don't want to get help because they are embarrassed of having mental problems and want to remain tough guys. Those same guys would not hesitate to get treatment for a bad heart or a broken leg. Stress is hard enough on a healthy body, sometimes it's overwhelming for someone with a brain chemical deficiency.

As someone who has lost a brother to suicide, my heart goes out to his family. Always cherish his memory. Do not blame yourselves for what happened. I carried a lot of anger for many years about it. And to all who read this, if you see someone who is going through a bad time, or down in the dumps, please hel them. And if you are reading this and ever think about doing it, remember that you are special and important. Know that it is not weak to get help. My thoughts and prayers are with this man's family. You are not alone in this. The LOSS group with catholic charities is a wonderful resource to help you cope with this. Give them a shot. One more thing to the family of this officer, he was important and the world is a little worse off without him. God bless.

If Cicero has not got the facilities to handle cops that need help during this sad time, Chicago should open the door and let these guys come to our Dept. That's one thing that is done right here. God only knows, we've had plenty of experience, sad to admit..God bless him.........

Serious question. Can one go on medical for stress without having to suffer any consequences from the department?

YES, YES, YES. The (Chicago) Police Dept. has help. You'll be off for a while and be evaluated to determine your readiness to return to duty, if necessary. The department won't and can't identify any problems you may have. Not enough people seek the available help offered by capable people on our department. I applaud you for recognizing the need, now go and help yourself. While I'm not sure the 'exact' title within the department I'd call personnel and ask them for the name/number. Don't be discouraged if you don't get the info on the 1st call. They have civilians answering the phone. Stay on top of it.
Good luck brother... we got your back.

Don't go to the Medical Section, but DO call the Professional Counseling Unit. They are great people, and your call and your visit are confidential. Let yourself be evaluated by a professional. You may or may not need to be off work for a while, but you can come to that decision together.

For those unwilling to call the Professional Counseling unit you can always contact Peer Support. There are probably a couple Peer Support people in your own unit. They are all good listeners and can usually steer you in the right direction.

God bless Cicero P.D. and police officers everywhere.

The Chicago PD and Cook County Sheriff's PD has joined together to support cops from CPD and suburban PDs that need help. They offer help for substance abuse, family counseling, suicide prevention. I dont remember the name but it is something like Peer Support ??? Please, if you are having problems ... reach out!

What are some of the clues? My husband who is CPD gets in these depressed states and I never know if he is just venting when he says certain things or is he really serious? He has no joy in his life and has stopped doing everything he once enjoyed to name some of the things.
He will not talk to anyone except to me. What should I do?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the fallen Cicero PO.

Talking with the clinicians at EAP is a good first step, and may be the only step necessary if you're feeling down, depressed, overwhelmed, angry with the job, or suicidal. If you are feeling suicidal, reach out to someone immediately. You can call EAP 24 hours a day, and let the call taker know you need to speak with a clinician. They won't need your full name or anything. It's all about your privacy and confidentiality.

You can go on the medical, and it is something that can be worked out with the clinician.

OFFICERS -- YOU ARE A VALUABLE ASSET TO THE CPD, THE CITY, YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Please be assertive in taking care of yourself, just as you are when responding to calls and looking out for the lives of others. Don't let fear of talking with someone keep you from feeling healthy and happy again. Be brave in reaching out, and proud of yourself for being active in your own health. Call EAP, the clinicians there are great, or talk with someone from Peer Support.

I do Peer Support and work in Area 1, 3rd Watch. If anyone from Area 1, or any unit for that matter, ever needs someone to hear them out, I'm here. Call A1 or get my cell phone number from off of the list in the RBT office. -- Det. Jamie Duignan

Response: Please get help for your husband. He is showing all the classic signs of severe depression. He may just be venting, but then again maybe not. I know because I've been there. Best wishes to you and your husband.

To the woman whose husband is depressed. Its time to schedule an appointment with his primary care physician. If he won't do that, encourage him to seek out the good resources within the department. Speak your peace, take him to the appointment. Depression makes it difficult to make wise choices. Call 911 if he is making statements like he wants to hurt himself. He needs to be evaluated by a professional.
