What a Difference 4 Days Makes
The Chicago Public Schools inspector general has launched an investigation into senior staff's use of leased cars, including an SUV driven by schools chief Ron Huberman that's equipped with satellite radio and heated seats.
The investigation was sparked by a Tribune story Sunday that disclosed Huberman's use of two taxpayer-funded cars -- a perk not available to previous school chiefs.
The story also prompted the administration to review its leasing program and discover procedures were not followed, said Monique Bond, schools spokeswoman.
[...] "That department is responsible," Bond said. "I don't want to implicate any individual, but we found out that policies were not followed ... Those found to be responsible will face severe disciplinary action."
[...] "Ron is upset that proper procedures were not followed," she said. "He's troubled. He's embarrassed, and he's angry."
- Huberman's car and driver can be used by his senior staff, spokeswoman Monique Bond said. His personal car is to get to and from work, weekend events and school-related trips to Springfield, she added. Bond said Huberman worked at least 36 weekend days in 2009 , and has taken a handful of trips to Springfield.
- On Saturday, Mayor Richard Daley said he was unfamiliar with the situation, but knows "Huberman will respond to that appropriately."
- Bond said Huberman typically begins his day about 7 a.m. and doesn't end until 8 p.m., on average. She said it doesn't make sense to have a driver make trips to his home, and that it's more cost-effective to have a separate car.

Are you soft? This department can't satisfy the day-to-day manpower minimum requirements for maintaining public safety for the citizens here and you want them to go to some 3rd world foreign country? How much assistance do we get from the Haitians when an earthquake, tornado or hurricane strikes here? ZERO, ZIP, NADA. We are not the police of the world, nor should we have to be the Band-Aid either.
There are many officers of German, Italian or other European descent too but we don't send over a contingency if there's a savage mudslide in the Alps and villages are wiped out, do we?
There are plenty of helpless and homeless folks right here in the USA that could use assistance too. Charity starts at home, remember?

It was in a letter of agreement signed by the City after the murder of an officer killed during a traffic stop on Lake Shore Drive while working along during night time hours.
It was never in the contract, as you say, but was understood as something that would be honored. Nothing has happened that I know of since then to negate the intent of that letter of understanding.
As to where that letter is and how to get a copy, well, I just don't have that information.

WE argue that troop strength is down under 10,000. The City says we are a few hundred short. It is a moot point. There are one man cars, and worse, unmanned Beats, on every Watch in the City.
It doesn't matter if the City is thinning the Police Department ranks by attrition or if the current Administration is mismanaging available manpower.
Sending P.O.s out without backup or help from other cars is dangerous. There was a one man car in a shooting 2 nights ago. 2 or 3 years ago, that P.O. would have had a few cars helping and that shooting probably would have been avoided.
Get P.O.s back in the blue and Whites. Man those cars. Omnipresence is a deterrent and far less dangerous for your first responders.....if they care.

Where do you go? Besides finding a place with a low or no crime rate and no thieving politicians, a big concern these days is water quality and availabilty. Living next to Lake Michigan, we sometimes take it for granted that quality water is endless, but, in some areas of the United States, this is a big issue and destined to become even bigger. I'm just saying.
I was getting gas at 37th and Iron and in line with about three other cars when this broad tried to pull in front of the cars that had already been waiting.

I watched the entire broadcast with Pat Robertson. The whole broadcast he describes the poverty and suffering in Haiti and asks for donations to be pleged for Haitian relief.
Then he spends a few seconds talking about the Island nations history and relates a long held story of folklore that has been repeated and passed down for centuries about how some haitian witchdoctor made a deal with the devil. In essence, if the devil would help drive out the french occupiers the voo-doo witch doctor and the people would serve him for 200 years.Well the french left, and for 200 years Haiti has been the poorest nation in the western hemishere. He told a story and for the last 24 hours every media outlet is crusifying him.. "Pat Robertson said blah,blah,blah..the Devil..blah, blah, blah..they (haitians) deserve it, blah, blah, blah!"

Hey asshole, flights to Haiti are restricted. The entire country is in CHAOS, and the govt. has collapsed too. I'm sure if that PO could get there, he would. If they could communicate with their family members WHO HAVE SURVIVED, I'm sure he would arrange to have them flown out to here, and I'm also sure he would find adequate housing for them when they got here. OFF TOPIC: will the city send a contingent of police to help in Haiti? I know this may not seem like an important issue, but there are a number of officers on the Dept who are of Haitian descent. We can't save or police the world, but these people are among the most helpless. Just wondering. I have family there. They are homeless. Some are missing. There are about 9 mil people and only 8,000 police. If nothing else, can we at least show some compassion and pray for that country? How about that Pat Robertson saying they brought it on themselves b/c they made a "pact with the Devil" in the 1700's? WOW.

Typical Huberman, he will blame procurement at CPS even though Im sure one of his Hubermanites (can you say Hiegel, who would've been fired if she was still a city employee concerning the OEMC/Motorola fiasco of super buy Adam Case who 3 years ago was making approx. $85,000 for the city and now probably makes $150,000 as a Hubie stooge) told them "Get the cars now. or else" and some fool will get fired for following orders, but it doesn't matter because they would've been fired if they didn't follow orders anyway.
I'd put Pat Robertson right up there with the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and other revruns of their ilk. They are all race baiters and fear mongers. Somehow this keeps them fat and rich.

There's no extra money involved for being an inspector. The only real perk was, you were your own boss, you set your own hours, and of course, since your car was your 'office,' you had a take home car. I'm not sure, but I don't think they take the cars home anymore, or at least it was proposed. It would appear with the onslought of retirements that there will be less than a handful of them around by March. No extra Lts. or Capts. (and by contract, Capts. have to be considered for assignment to the position of Inspector now), it doesn't look like that division will be around much longer. If the WCs and Sgts. would do what they should be doing, you wouldn't have much need of them. As a Lt. who gets sent around regularly as a guest WC throughout the 25 districts, it's shocking and embarrassing to see some of the roll calls I attend.
Clearly, many of the WCs and regularly assigned sector Sgts. aren't looking at their officers on a regular basis at all. Supervision overall in the patrol division just sucks on so many levels.

One of the things that Booz-Alen study (1995-96) said was to eliminate Inspectors on the street. they are doing what Sgts and field Lt's are supposed to do.
They recommended keeping Inspectors to do audits etc but not to look for loose threads or the wrong color vest carrier. We have supervisors who are supposed to do that.

As another Lieutenant, from a busy district, who get sent on these "road trips" I am sometimes, well maybe "shocked" isn't the right word, at some of what I see at roll calls. It often has to do with the hairstyles, the long painted fingernails and even facial piercings on some officers. Not only does this look like hell but in a fight the hair gets pulled, the fingernails break and a piercing can rip up a face and leave a hell of a scar. I always warn them that this is a hazard, but as a "Guest WC" am I going to send home what the regular WC tolerates. Let's not get into facial hair and "bump cards".
What is worse is when I have to approve an arrest report. A lot of officers need Basic English 101 and "How to Explain Probable Cause." Some people must type their reports with their thumbs like some people type on this blob.
As a Visiting WC, most times it’s like a night off for me; but I have been to police involved shootings, squad car wrecks and I have taken care of officers as if they were my own.
Stay Safe, the most "shocking" thing is how undermanned the districts are, if we nit-picked everyone who would we have left, Big Bird?
