Alternative Media on the Case

InTheLoop.TV picks up the J-Fed tire story and runs with it.

They also ask for other photos of some of the vehicles we drive.

As these are all taxpayer purchased vehicles, we're sure that photographs of them on the public way violates no known law or ordinance.

What would be truly amusing would be photographs of the vehicle along with a shot of the odometer. We drove one last week with 193,000 miles on it and the breeze from the leaky doors and windows was enough to move what's left of our hair from one side of the comb-over to the other.

Sunday is vehicle inspection day - how about some pictures?

How about the car in 001 that started on fire two months ago because the floorboard rusted through and got the floor liner and carpet going. Luckily the officer had the sense to pull over when he smelled something burning.

More to the point, folks, Sunday is vehicle inspection day and how about we stop accepting that it's 'normal' that we have to drive some unsafe, bald-tired, electrically-shorting, fume-spewing thing formerly known as a car? Unsafe vehicles should NOT be driven.

I know I lucked out. My 12 year old crown vic has only 72000 miles on it. Even though the rust holds it together, it runs great still.

We need to get pictures of all the body damage, bald tires, holes in the floor, sagging suspensions, bullet holes, missing spare tires, etc.

Do this in memory of Sgt Haymaker-R.I.P.

As someone said before, we don't need GPS, we don't need cameras. We need vehicles that are safe to drive.

Anyone else think we won't be seeing cameras in the new vehicles?

I had one car some time back in which the mars lights and siren did not work.

I drove to the station and called for R service. Since there were no other cars available, I sat in the station and waited for the R man.

Desk Sgt sees me sitting around and asks me what I was doing. I told him that I had no emergency lights and no siren and I was waiting for the R man to come and look at it.

He tells me to get back out on the street and they will call me when the R man shows up. I told him that I would not drive the car since the mars lights and siren didn't work; what would happen if a 10-1 was called and I attempted to answer with no lights and sirens activated?

He then orders me to get back out there. I again refuse. The good Sgt then tells me that he will be pulling a CR on me for refusing a direct order.

I told him to do whatever he thinks he needs to do but I would not drive that car until the lights and siren were fixed.

He stormed off. I never did hear anything more on the CR.

I think what the media is missing is that 100,000 miles on patrol vehicle is not like 100,000 on a pampered, cared for car driven by Grandpa.

When I worked patrol (in another district) fleet told me that the "actual" mileage is triple what shows on the odometer because of the amount of idling, jackrabbit starts, etc that these cars endure.

And the interior? It's not the 2-kids and a dog test that GM uses - interiors are treated far worse than any civilian car... even if the officers do their best to keep them clean.

Let's face it, if you saw a civilian car in the shape of some patrol cars, you'd have cause to pull them over and cite safety violations, right?

- a civilian now

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Don't get your hopes up on this. Word is that changes are coming regarding the cameras. These changes will not only give IAD and the dics instant, on-scene access to the camera recordings for EVERY car on a scene (remember, if your camer is turned ON, it's re3cording and storing it in the drive in the trunk), but instant access to IPRA as well. While this itself may not always be a bad thing, the real flip of it is that IPRA now wants full access to any footage at any time. Remember how they said they wanted to catch cops dirty? IPRA does not want CPD limiting their investigations to an alleged incident. They want it all, at any time, at their choosing. Witch hunts, people.

Picked up a pool wagon with a dump in the back. It was a Chevy with no diesel with good heat. After about a week it smelled so bad up front we could not stand it. The car wash refused to clean it.MM said park it and gave us another junk minus the dump and the heat.

While the condition of our cars is not right it is definitely nothing new. In the mid eighties my car caught on fire. The first I noticed was when my feet got really warm in the middle of winter. I looked down and saw smoke coming through the floor. Jumped out and called the fire dept. and by the time they got there the floorboards were in flames. I noticed later that the bottom of my shoes had melted. 25 years later and they are even worse. Do not drive these death traps. If something is wrong don't take it out. Down the thing. You can't be ordered to drive an unsafe vehicle!!!!!

Excuse me, but could someone please explain the photos on my blog to me that I just posted? There are pipes and boxes hanging all over?

Yesterday afternoon I saw a CPD car heading 63rd St Eastbound and the back tire on the driver side was wobbling. I should have flagged down the officer but quite frankly was stunned.

You guys complain about witnesses and such not talking to you when they witness a crime, and rightfully so. Now you are no better if you stay silent. The police memorial is about our fallen and also about the living.

Sgt Haymaker can't tell us what his car was like or what happened that day, but you can. Because the next name on the wall may be yours...

I was at the scene minutes after it happened. Box 18 on the report is #3 snow and slush. It should be #4 icy. There was no slush. Talk to the guys on the plows, the other cops and the CFD. It's really very simple what caused the sarge to skid off LSD. For the sake of the Haymaker family, the cops and citizens, the truth must come out. Grand jury.

BINGO, stop spending the precious little money we have on stupid shit like cameras and gps that are broken and dont work anyway, and spend it on important things like safe reliable cars, rifle racks, tasers and more training. PRIORITIES!!!!!!!!! this dept. has its head up its ass so far you need a crane to pull it out.

To whoever runs this "honest media" pics on the way thanks for exposing all the things the corrupt mayor lets happen to police! Citizens wondering why we are late to your calls? The suntimes today has an article "Chicago is down 2,000+ officers everyday", and j-fed is "nervous" due to the 1,000+ retirements expected this year! Put in all the junk cars that are unsafe and we cannot even get to "your" call expeditiously! CITZIENS,TAXPAYERS WRITE YOUR ALDERMEN,AND THE MAYOR,QUINN.MADIAGN ETC,FLOOD THEIR EMAILA AND PHONES WITH CALLS,WRITE USPS LETTERS IT IS YOUR CITY!

Having that squad impounded by the city is like the fox guarding the hen house. Did anyone check the depth of the tread before they try to put on new tires? It's common knowledge that they stopped salting LSD hours before. Who issued the order?

Ask yourself this one question: Would I put my family in this car and drive them around?
Also The more cars we "down" will make it more difficult for them to hide the fact that our fleet sucks! And by the way...Who the hell buys a 2 wheel drive SUV in the Mid West? without traction control??? maybe it was Obama's GM (Government Motors) way of dumping un-sellable SUV's. Oh by the way King Richard II can get a big tax write off for the city because they were purchased in 2009

The light/siren/PA box looks like it doesnt work too good anymore... Is it held in place by 1 screw ? Weis and Daley, you should be ashamed. This is public safety ? What about the safety of the cops that drive these wrecks ? The City requires Cabs be changed out every, what is it, 7 years ? Daley, if you need to tax 10 cents on a 6 pack of beer,50 cents on a case and $1.00 on a bottle of whiskey, do it for god sakes !!! Get these Cops the things they need....

I recall while working in Austin my partner and I were assigned to pickup checks at 11th & State. I pulled in line to gas up while my partner went in to get the checks. A Deputy spotted the Chevy with huge rust spots all over it and smoke spewing out of it and inquired about my assignment. He then ordered me to never bring this car downtown as this is a westside car.

as you can't do much about the exterior of your car, most of the cars with messed up interiors are caused by YOU!! To many cpd are slobs, they leave everything imaginable in those cars. It was funny though when the field lt took my car because his was covered in snow and my cap to my chew bottle popped off and got all over him.. He bitched to me and to the captain, and the captain laughed even harder and said clean your car next time..
Normally i would take my chew bottle with me, but the Lt was in a hurry.

You showed a great deal of concern for your fellow Officers while sitting on your ass in the lot. Your car was not dangerous. Drive like a normal person to your jobs.

You are an ass and your Sgt. should have slammed you. Neither one of you did the job you were paid to do. Oh yeah, you sit alone at roll call don't you?

I will chime in on this: "what would happen if a 10-1 was called and I attempted to answer with no lights and sirens activated?"

10-1 call... DONT GO, DONT PUT YOURSELF IN HARMS WAY, but you can handle some parking calls, some burglary calls, etc. instead of sitting there while your watch carries your weight. I'm all for protest, but get to the right target(I guess SCC is a start). How about using the radio to your advantage something like "Squad, hold me down as a foot or bike on 2520 authority, and then slip in I cant take 10-1 calls because I have no lights and sirens" pass the buck to the RADIO for the OEMC to hear!!!! The only person you are pissing off is your brothers on your watch, and a Sergeant stuck in the middle.

Use the radio, lots more people hear that then some one-one at the desk, and keep using SCC!!

coppers are, I repeat are responsible for the inside of these cars being so messed up, when you carve your initials in dashboards and write on the headliner is childiss conduct, then when you crave the steering wheel why? because you are pissed that you had to handle more paper jobs then last time, or your Lt pissed you off, grow up you little spolied brats who have no clue about life, they let you 23 yr old goofs strap on a pistol and wham, he is anotehr bad attitude, all of you should have to serve in the military before coming on the job, you throw shit all over the cars and never wash a car, because it takes too much time, And for you Sgts, shame on you, get your heads out of your underworked asses and supervise, you would be amazed at how much more respect you gain whewn you interact and guide these young folks, try it, and for you punk ass lts and capts, if you weren't busy sending cars for your Dunkin Donuts Coffee maybe you would be able to see what was going on, Boy I can't wait, 6 more months and I will be gone then I can laugh when I see the police pass by.
