Ryan Pardon Plea
- As part of the ongoing campaign to win an early prison release for former Gov. George Ryan, his wife and lawyer said Wednesday that they are seeking clemency from President Barack Obama, citing the couples' declining health.
Lura Lynn Ryan, 75, who has a terminal lung disease, said that she is on oxygen 24 hours a day. While she still talks to her husband daily, "it's not like having him here," she said. "Knowing that I may have a limited time makes it harder."
Ryan, in federal prison in Indiana for more than two years, also has health problems, including kidney disease and infected teeth, his lawyer, former Gov. Jim Thompson said. Ryan, sent to prison after his 2006 conviction on corruption charges, turns 76 next Wednesday.

In any event, this becomes a political question rather than a question of mercy. Senator Dick "Dick" Durbin (D-Turban) presented the first clemency petition to President Bush in the waning days of his presidency. Bush didn't touch it, probably because he knew what a tool Ryan was.

Yup, sure Ryan did all that. But let's not forget every other allegedly "clean" gov'ner that preceded him. AS IF Edgar didn't do all those things that the Feds nailed Ryan for. While Dixon and Edgar and the rest were the Illinois Secy's of State they all used that office as a free poster to put their names all over licenses and plates over the years and surely selling as many tickets and taking as many payoffs as Ryan did. I guess I no longer care much what happens to him. He can't ever really pay for his crimes in this life anyway, and whatever punishment we can dole out to him in this life has mostly been done.
Maybe it would be appropriate for BHO to pardon him as he was leaving office as a gesture of mercy to a dying old man. Nothing wrong with a public expression of mercy now and then.
Its not like he is going to get out of prison and start robbing banks or mugging old people.
OTOH, it would not bother me if he died in prison either. He chose his own path, and it is not anyone's fault but his own that he ended up in prison.

Part of the punishment of prison is not being their for your family. I really enjoy when they put these old outfit guys away. People who spent their lives intimidating others spending their final years behind bars is a great comeuppance. Ryan is and was nothing more than a mobster and hopefully some day Dicking us Daley will join him for his "golden"years.

When Durban asked Bush to pardon Ryan, I sent Durban a letter telling him I'd never vote for him again and I haven't changed my mind.
I'll be happy to see Ryan pardoned when the Willis family is pardoned from their pain and suffering.

Cozzi was making a point to a shithead, it was hardly a "beating". I've been beat worse by some old nuns at St. Ben's.They never went to prison. Ryan was a career thief and so is another short guy we know. And another thing ... from listening to the Cozzi appeal I think J-"Bitchtits" Weis should be imprisoned for prompting a malicious prosecution motivated by whatever political capital he hoped to attain by Bill's imprisonment.
Can all of those kids get an early release from their graves? Let him sit and think about it.

Six innocent children of two good parents horribly burned to death. Six children from a Mt. Greenwood home. Most people that have six children are too old to conceive again. I never bought the argument that Ryan was directly responsible for the deaths of the Willis children, where brake drum falls off the illegally licensed truck driver's truck, gets run over by the van and the gas tank is ripped open. A freak tragic accident.
But when he became aware of the corruption in the SOS office and not only did nothing to stop it but stymied the investigation, he deserves to serve every day of his sentence as message to other corrupt pols in this state.

I'm no fan of George Ryan and was pleased to see him found guilty and sent to prison. However I agree that there's not much to be gained by keeping him locked up til 2013. In light of the fact that his wife is dying I wouldn't see the harm in releasing him. It's not like he'd be getting off scott free he's already served 3 years, his name is ruined and he's hurting financially.
But he's a republican. Leave Obama out of this.
