Tahoe Contracts Toast?

Try to follow this if you can....
  • well well well... seems the city is stuck once again on the fleet problem...or non problem I guess if you ask the city but I digress. So anyways, I went out to dinner last night with an old friend who does ordering and inventory in fleet for police vehicles.

Well, I guess the tahoes are going to be short lived. The city is currently attempting to opt out of the remaining contract for the tahoes and is currently shopping around for another type of squad car. According to my friend at fleet this task could be a fairly easy one...however..ta da!!!! Enter politics and the city not wanting to spend any money.

There are three options they city would consider. Number one, the new Chevy Caprice(yes, they brought back the caprice), The newly unveiled ford Taurus police interceptor which has 115 more hp than the crown vic, and the dodge charger.. GREAT! plenty of picks to choose from right?? umm, no.

The city was told that in order to get the ford taurus package they would have to make modifications to be able support what is needed, and also take away some of the bells and whistles that isnt needed... well the city said, no... maybe we should stick to chevy because it may make the cancellation of the current tahoe order easier then they could just make a re-order of caprices and keep the buisness with the hodgkins dealership(yes, the dealership has connections to a certain alderman) but anyway, thats not important...

ok, so fleet makes some calls, does some research and seems like it can get the job done... fleet makes a presentation, gives the pro's and con's of the chevy and advises the city that it would have to buy all new computers and get rid of the toughbooks due to a floor shifter in the chevy. there are much better, smaller and easier computers for police cars than the toughbook that are made to fit in the caprice... city flips a lid. go figure.

They refuse to buy new computers because the city had a contract with...guess who, another connected person who has a hand in the toughbook deal. so the city shoots down the chevy pick.... fleet says it will look at the charger... city says dont bother its way too fast.. fleet says its available without the hemi engine city says they dont care they wont do buisness with dodge.. fleet says those are the only viable options and city then asks how long can the current fleet be streatched if they stop buying tahoes in january of 2011... fleet replys.. ohhhhh, we should be able to stretch it till about febuary of 2011 and walks out the door(pretty funny if you ask me).

so.. city and fleet are now at an impass. city will not budge on any of the choices and the tahoe contract is as good as done... whatever. just sharing with you and giving you an inside look at the morons in charge in the city... and by hearing the horror stories from my fleet friend.. I now know fleet has ABSOLUTLY nothing to do with our shortages. the blame goes directly with the politicos.
Did you get all that? An amusing situation...if we weren't driving pool cars with 120,000 miles on them and Tahoes that have more maintenance costs than any other Fleet vehicle we've ever driven.

This whole Tahoe deal lands right in Dugans lap. He was on the committee that approved all these vehicles. Again from a guy who probably spent a whole two years in a beat car!

Yeah, Ive heard this and its a pretty widespread rumor. The only thing about this is that I guess the city is checking out the options for new squad cars but this is the first time ive ever heard of any types of cancelled contracts.. personally, I belive everything else but I dont belive the whole cancelled contract thing and I really dont know about the conncted person thing.. What connection can the city actually have to the toughbook people. its sounds good, but I dont think its 100% legit.. I think its a pretty vicious rumor that started after the sgts crash.

It Never Ever changes.

Buying equipment that is practical will be passed over every time.

Cars, Guns, Ammo, Computers, Uniforms, Information Systems, Lasers, Tasers, Parts, it goes on and on.

We always buy something that everybody else is getting rid of (old model, discontinued).

We only buy from Clout Connected, 'City Approved', Alderman and Revrend Recommended vendors.

No matter how simple the item, we will 'look for the hook' to get that right price, and it always bites the taxpayers in the ass.

Maybe we can buy used taxis from that Russian dude and make them last another year or so.

This is a hoot, every time I think "this is as bad as I've seen it in 25 years," it gets worse. I cannot imagine how this department and city will degenerate in years to come. I am so longing for retirement to come in a few years. I will make sure the moving truck is backing up to the house as soon after retirement as possible.

What a fucking shithole. Even Matt Rodriguez, the previous worst superintendent in my career, could get a load of squad cars now and then.

My district has not seen even one new Tahoe except for the Sgt cars. No new computers. But we have brand new pristine M4 rifles sitting unused because no one has a rifle rack in their squad cars.

Stay safe people, we are all we've got.

Gee, I'm so glad that the City cares more about their connected contracts than the taxpayer. It must be so hard to make a logical, ethical, moral and financially sound decision when you have so many mouths to feed first. No wonder nothing gets done with all the requirements coming from the fifth floor.

This was an enlightening post, thank you. The only thing missing were the names of the connected business owners. Boy, if we had those names we could do some major damage, couldn't we? Like boycott their companies or corporations. Maybe send the information to political reform groups. I, for one, would like to know these very special people so I can understand why they are so much more important than me.

Did you know that taxis in the city of Chicago have a life expectancy? After a certain amount of miles( not sure wasn't given the number) or the vehicle's years of service it must be removed from the streets or face fines! This was related as I was replacing a flat tire with a tire that had very little if any tread left. I was told that I could not receive a new tire until all of the old tires were gone!

Who is in charge of this fleet management?

Why is this happening? Is it even true?

Who is holding the paperwork that is presented from the auto dealers showing the accurate numbers?

Do they exist or is it all rumor?

Do pre existing computer contracts conflict with vehicle purchases?

Why aren't they able to be modified?

Who was involved in these contracts as spokesmen for the City of Chicago?

How much input does the current superintendent have over any of this?

The mayor ??

Anyone?

This would be good reading...

P.S. add your own questions to fill in the gaps for a starter.

Tahoes are great for Chicago weather.......if you have the four wheel drive version (which we dont). The two wheel drive (which we have)is worse in the snow than the impala.

Count on the City to get the Interceptor (Taurus). Two days ago Ford announced it wil be built here.

It would be a slap in the face to a company who is actually bringng jobs to Chicago to specifically make a police car in a city that wont buy them.

Look for the City to support the Ford Plant.

Chevy is putting a shifter in the midde of the floor in a police car?

How stupid no wonder GM is dead.

This is complete bullshit. The so called connected dealer in hodgkins did not get the latest tahoe order. The Ford Taurus and the Explorer will be coming out in the next couple of years as squad cars. Do you want front wheel drive or all wheel drive? The floor shifter in the new caprice is a problem for toughbooks but so is the fact that Shortshanks wants suv's. The charger is not too fast and the city buys other dodge's now. The only thing write about the original comment is that fleet would be happy to buy as many new cars as possible but they get far too little funding for squad cars each budget from downtown.

If the city has to keep dealing with Chevy, they could go to the new police package with the Aussie car they are comming out with. Since the car is 3-4 thousand cheaper that the tahoe, they could use the remaining money to purchase new ( and working ) computors. Nice fix, so the city will not go for it.
Also in the wings, made in Indiana, is the new purpose built police car from Carbon Motors.

This is actually great news. Whatever it may be, the Tahoe deal is toast. We all know those things are crap. Horrible in the rain, even worse in the snow. Horrible turning radius. Needing new breaks constantly. They are just not a police vehicle and have no durability. Let's face it the only thing people like about them is the radio. They're not even as comfortable as the Crown Vics, if you ask me.

I'm really hoping they go with the Fords, seeing as how they're being made in Chicago....

Back in the mid 80s, a large Chevy dealer and a large Ford dealer were big supporters of Harold Washington.

The situation doesn't surprise me.

Maybe the media that trolls the blog will pick this up and see what happens.

Not really.... If you think about it, the chances of getting a CR or into something that leads to a law suit or some bullshit witch-hunt from IRPA or IAD are a lot less in the station than on the street!

And if you think the City actually cares about the tax payer, and wasting resources, you’re on some good drugs, my friend! All the City does is waste recourses to put money in the pockets of someone “connected”. I’d be pissed that you aren’t one of the “connected”, but that’s me.

The powers that be made the same arguments when Chevrolet installed the LT1 5.7l Corvette derived v-8 in the redone 9c1 Caprice for 1994.

They said "no fucking way" to CPD fleet having "rocket chevys" but it was a scream and a thigh slapper that CTA purchased a shit load of these cars for the CTA Special Employment fleet. It was the height of hilarious... a 150+ mph PURSUIT vehicle (CHiP officer has the record at an indicated 158 mph) to run down bus disturbances??

Now we're not complaining because that car was just the ticket for getting from the Kraft Building to the bus roundy-round in Alligator Gardens (133rd & Ellis?) pretty lickety damn split on 1st watch... We can personally attest to 135 mph and that beast was rock steady.

It wasn't the speed and power only... That car was purpose built for police work. Heavier (truck) frame & body mounts, reinforced/armored shroud for cooling system, heavier gauge metal for the doors, auxiliary oil, transmission and differential coolers etc.

We always turned our noses up at the Crown Vic because Ford has not sold a dedicated Police Interceptor since 1977... Funny how some young'uns get all bothered because an essentially civilian spec car (uprated electrical, cooling and engine management and that's basically it) has "Police Interceptor" badges. We old motor heads call it the police impersonator but to each his own, lol.

We rather like the Chevy PPV. The chevy like the mopar is unibody... Mopar has made unibody squads that held up and performed quite well like the 1961 Plymouth Fury 383 retired ISP unit we learned to cut the wheel in. What a hairy, scary monster that thing was but typical of what Mopar was building for the Police at the time.

On another note... we do dearly miss the sight & sound of the 350 Chevy being column shifted & burning rubber for nearly 100 yards as the tail-lights dance madly into the night getting smaller in the distance while the radio crackles with excitement and danger...

Actually, we do, but I doubt that they have a great deal of input with Fleet Management. Just for your information, the Michigan State Police tests squad cars for their suitability as police cars, more or less continuously, and they publish the results for all to see.

ummmmm, thats impossible. the new taurus police interceptor isnt being produced until 2011 and wont be ready until 2012.. infact, the factory hasnt even been tooled yet to build the taurus police interceptor... im sure the whole fed part is a lie too...

Slow down everyone... for the record.. THIS IS NOT TRUE. THIS NEVER HAPPENED. No contract is in question for anything. The remaining tahoes are going to be picked up and the order will be fulfilled. the city wont start buying more cars weather they are fords or chevys till about 2013 or 2014. I believe the last tahoe orders are good until then. This Is a complete lie and is not true at all.... Check Your facts before posting things Scc!

The new Taurus Police Interceptor will be built in CHICAGO. It makes sense to buy the hometown car. But when did this city ever use common sense? The Taurus is AWESOME.....

Great Choices, We don't need front wheel drive cars, just look at what happens to the front wheel drive Impalas, Our young buck, immature kids Fuck anything up, Tauras would be a disaster, these youngsters don't need anything that fast, and what year sytle Caprice are they going to remake, the bubbletop or squarebox. When the bosses make the kids take some responsibility for the condition of the cars and inspect them at the end of the tour then we can drive cars that run and look good, not the attitudes that hey we work in a busy district and don't have time to wash and put gas in cars, wow, such a pathetic dept.

The city can still order the traditional Police interceptor until 7 May 2010. So lets see if fleet does the right thing and orders a thousand or so!

Went in to get tires at A-1 garage this week to replace 4 nearly bald skins... some lazy dog in the shop made me wait 2 hours while he sat on his ass with his I-pod. Then he insisted the cruiser only needed 3 new ones. WTF!

Hey fleet management!! Don't use the Area 1 moniker to identify your operation. Area 1 is a police term and identifier. You assholes are not worthy enough to use our terminology. Fleet management is the problem, certainly not the solution. Give the police control of the police fleet of vehicles and electronics. Picardi and his band of jag offs can stick with the garbage trucks. Fuck Fleet!

why are there 8 brand new Tahoes assigned to the academy? Not to mention the brand new crown vics? Plenty of other units make do with hand me down cars (including the detective division). How many Tahoes can you park outside of Pompeii at lunch time?

The last "cruiser" I was in/on had propellers not tires, and some 8" guns.

Quit watching TV son and become the REAL police!

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I love the Tahoe's. I'm 6'5" and the crown vics with a cage just don't have enough room. After an 8 1/2 hr. tour, my back is killing me in the old squads. The Tahoe is so much easier to get in and out of. I know they have their problems, but all police cars have problems due to the constant use. Does anyone out there agree?

Say what u want about Phil, Terry, Matt, and LeRoy, it was never this bad.
-----------------------------------
They just didn't get caught red handed.

The ready availability of video recording equipment and things that leave a lot of trails like email, computer records, and cell phones, make it a lot harder to fly under the radar these days.

Plus people are more fed up than in the past, and to some extent the Internet makes it a lot harder to cover stuff up. In the past if you wanted to hide things from the public you only had to co-opt one or two reporters, and that was always easy. Now you have to co-opt 1000 bloggers. Not real easy.

The courts have also started to come down a little harder on official misconduct, not by much, but even a little bit is a lot, when in the past it was mostly just ignored.

"Chevrolet makes two versions of their police Tahoe. The Tahoe PPV is 2 wheel drive and pursuit rated. The 4 wheel drive version is called the Tahoe Special Service Vehicle and is used by many K9, Hazmat, or for general Patrol duties where there is snow or rough terrain. The 4 wheel drive sits 1 inch higher and has a higher center of gravity, therefore is not rated for emergency vehicle operations or pursuit."

MANY of the people that have top jobs in this city get pay VERY WELL not for their knowledge, but rather lock of. in other words they get PAID to keep their mouths shut, and SAY yes to others at higher spots. that's how it works!!!

If any of you officers have a problem getting repairs done or tires switched out just ask for the garage foreman and tell them your problem. If that doesn't work call down to Administrative services and ask for Fleet personel. They are the police. . WE are fleets customers, we don't work for the gaarges, they work for the city and we work for the police. If that doesn't work and you feel that the car is unsafe, call for your ballest male or female Sgt. Tell them your story and if they have the balls they will address the problem. leave the car and keys right where you left it, take your stuff out and leave. Call FOP and demand, yes demand that they take action, you pay them , they don't pay you dues. There is nota thing that they can do to you, you can't be dumped from a beat car to another district, unless you are at the lowest point of senority. I'm a segeant and I take care of business for my guys. We need to rebell against this nonsense and you FOP members need to storm the meetings and let them board members know how you are feeling. you guys have alot of years left to improve things, I'm almost done.

Everyone start taking photos of your vehicles mileage. If you are riding in a squad with over 150,00miles on it post it on SCC. I'm sure there are a few hundred out there.

Its the 1st time I've been to this fourm and I totally understand how you feel about the c/v,tahoes and chevys. But let me tell u about what I/we have 2 do to get them fixed 4 you guys.I don't like having u sit and wait 4 your car or hear their's no pools, they break down either from normal or heavy abuse or not brought in for maint's,I cant blame u guys 4 not bringing them in if no pools but I/we are understaffed, napa controls all parts and ordering, some things I/we have to customize due to napa has no item avail.I wk in 1 of the repair garages and its a mess, not the way I would run a shop. The upper management is f'up.fleet is messed up.shit rolls down hill & we are working harder, cutting times and still understaffed. The c/v is a great car, easy to wk on and very reliable.Tahoe suck,2wd,every 3k it needs brakes, cant handle well, cant take a hit well.impalas suck, fwd junk, alum sub frame ,v6 junk,p/s problems/noise and allways leak and elect problems.we dont have heat in the winter in the shop,so its kinda hard to work also.napa parts are cheap!!!!lets think about this.vehicles that r needed 24 hrs a day,hd driving and cheapy parts, hmmm.if fleet or ? would put h.d.,severe or fleet duty parts in we would cut the down time alot.I have more but its for later. Thanks for reading and reply back if u want...
