ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • Chicago police have launched an investigation after a man came forward with video and pictures that appear to show two police officers sleeping in their squad cars Friday morning.

ABC7 Chicago obtained that video and the pictures and talked to the man, who did not want to be identified.

The pictures show one officer sitting in the passenger seat of a marked squad car, eyes closed, head back. One parking spot over, a photo shows another officer in the passenger seat of a squad roll; same situation.

Their partners were in getting coffee, and frankly, it shows good sense that if they were tired enough to drop off in a parking lot, it's a good thing they weren't the ones driving that night. Is it a smart thing to do? No. But is it something that happens working midnights? Yes.

The human body is reluctant to function properly in the absence of sunlight. Cops are no different than any other overnight worker. They have ups and downs and lapses in judgment. Consider this a tiny lapse.

So he says he was just concerned about the officers because one of his officer friends was killed in the line of duty? And why exactly did you have to go to the media to express your concern? God forbid you talk to the officers or just call the District. No, ABC needs to know about your concern. Fuck this city! It 99% populated by a**holes!

Well G Wizz, lets do the math. I work a 10 hour schedule out of a 24 hour day. that leaves 14 free hours left. then I go to court and I'm in court for 5 hours. that leaves 9 free hours left. travel time to and from court is just over 2 hours. that leaves 7 free hours left. travel time to and from work is about 1-1/2 hours. lets see, that leaves me 5-1/2 hours left out of a 24 hour day to try to catch some sleep. takes me about a good hour to wine down from all the stress from work. plus i have to feed the kids and help with their homework. hmmm, I have about 2-3 hours in a 24 hour day to catch some zzz's. so fuck me for resting my eyes while my partner is in taking a crapper or stopping for a cup of java. give me a fucking break people.... joe citizen, try my job for a day or two. not only wont you get any sleep, i'll bet you'll run away with your tail between your legs when you see a guy shooting or a gang fight breaks out on the corner.

Just a thought....Maybe if this City gave a rats ass about the people who protect them, they would have pushed to have our contract settled in a timely manner and given us a decent wage. Maybe then I would not have to work special enjoyment on my day off and my part-timer during the week and i would actually get some rest and do my job better. Unfortunately you get what you pay for....we all need rest and in order to live in a decent nieghborhood, you need three jobs! ps even my good nieghborhood sucks.

As posted on Shaved, not verbatim:

Folk lore has it that two coppers from 005 (now retired) were "awakened" by an inspector rapping on their squad car window. They both made the sign of the Cross and asked why their prayer was being interrupted.

Stay Safe, be aware of your surroundings. This aint' your daddy's Police Department no more.

Mr. Do Gooder Citizen Who Took the Video to "Protect" the Police:

You are a horse's ass. You do not have any police friend who was killed in the line of duty and you do not care about the police. So, do you feel like you have big balls now that you did your little investigative report? Feel proud of yourself for being a tattle-tale with a camera.

As for the media, c'mon already. What the fuck type of news is this?

You guys smoke pot. You cheat on your spouses. You drink and drive. Some of you even like to use cocaine. You lie in your stories. You cowardly hide behind the 1st Amendment. Get off your lazy asses and dig at the stories where the politicians and bosses are getting their illegal piece of the money pie to the tune of millions and millions of dollars.

By the way, how do I know about all of your illegal activity? An editor acquaintance of mine laughingly filled me in on the behind the scene stories of the newsroom and had the brass balls to tell me that there is not much the police can do about - not quite in those words, but pretty damn close.

Wow, the defenders of truth, hide behind a paper shield and then point fingers at others! Disgusting!

What a fucked up city this is, from the media to city hall and all places in between.

If the cop closes his eyes while his partner is taking a "personal" big fucking deal. Midnights are very tough on the body and the mind. Just because some jackass, citizen, boss or otherwise says that you shouldn't be closing the eyes does not mean that it is possible to do every night. Let's get real, you critics, who never had to work a beat car on midnights. Just STFU. You don't know what you are talking about.

Lombard, Ill., Police Lt. Jim Glennon, a lead instructor for the Calibre Press Street Survival Seminar, is a proponent of monitoring the fatigue of officers and ensuring they are not too tired to drive. As the evening shift commander, he encouraged his officers that become tired to come into the station and take a short nap. "We openly discussed the absurdity of having officers driving squad cars while dead tired. Court time, a personal life, meetings and training all result in the loss of much-needed sleep for officers working the overnight shift,” Glennon says. “This is quite simply a reality. It is ridiculous to pretend this doesn't happen or ignore the consequences of limited sleep."

Why You Need to Take a Nap at Work
Studies Suggest That Napping During the Day Can Increase Productivity and Have Health Benefits
Could napping at work actually increase productivity?

According to a new book by Dr. Sara C. Mednick called "Take a Nap! Change Your Life," the answer is yes.

A NASA study backs up the claim. The study shows that a nap of just 26 minutes can boost performance by as much as 34 percent.

The average American gets 6.7 hours sleep a night; the recommended amount is eight hours a night.

Mednick said she grew interested in researching the benefits of napping because as a student, she took a lot of naps.

"I found it helps with memory processing, alertness, and learning new skills," she said. "We live with less than our recommended eight hours, and that means so many things -- decreased sex drive, decreased productivity, and fatigue-related accidents. Napping helps with all of these things."

Some companies are starting to respond to sleep-deprived workers by providing the time and space to nap during work hours. Studies show tired workers cost business about $150 billion a year in lost productivity.

"I think it's just like working from home," Mednick said. "Years ago your boss would have thought you were crazy if you asked to work from home, but now that companies see the results and increase in productivity, it's become more and more common. I think once companies start to see an increase in production and fewer sick days from napping, it will become more and more common as well."

Old Retired Guy Here. When I worked Midnights I would often close my tired eyes, for a hour or so. Always was on my beat.Always up and available on the radio. Always monitored the radio, never missed a call, or failed to respond to a emergency call. It's was just part of the job.
It may look bad on its face, but truth is there are not too many people that can keep up and rolling all night.

Midnights suck, let's go back to some kind of rotation. I would like a 90 day rotation allowing seniority to pick the rotation they would like. Meaning the more senior officer can choose to work the rotation that suits them best. Working 1st watch is just not healthy. Another suggestion, pay me, adjust the duty availability so that 1st watch officers gets the most while 2nd gets the least. Just a suggestion. I always liked the rotating watch.

well since there are only 24 hrs in a day and the goofs on the 5th floor put all patrol units on 9 or 10 hr shifts to pretend theres enough police on the streets.....naps happen very often and for better or worse will continue to do so....it is the natural physical response to police type stress and way too long shifts...nobody nods off in public on purpose in full uniform, get back to 8hr shifts no more than five days in a row and expect better alertness on duty. Reality bites Daley, hire street police. Clear out your consultants and double dippers you create jobs for in the headquartners and you can afford street police and our much lower pension packages. Picardi, the street/sans guy fired that you just slid onto police dept as a 120,000 plus car and benefits; start by rescinding that shit play, he is useless and our underfunded pensions can't afford him. Hmmmm...

Coppers working midnights closed their eyes for 20 winks?

So what?

Big deal.

Perhaps we should have Mr. so called "concerned for the officer's safety" and the nitwits at ch.7 forced to stay awake for 10 hours in the face of a couple million years of evolution.

Humans ARE NOT NOCTURNAL!

The human body IS DESIGNED TO SHUT DOWN DURING HOURS OF DARKNESS!

But of course because Police Officers are involved, any semblance of level-headed reasoning goes out the window.

It seems the majority of the public has bought into the constant Daley Inc. propaganda regarding Police Officers.

Classic propaganda campaign... To easily destroy a group of people, you strip them of every quality that makes them human in the eyes of the majority of the populace. Every human failing is magnified into something sinister and malignant. dehumanize and marginalize them in the media.

(Hello scum-times and fibune, you make Pravda during the Stalin era blush like a whore in church)

It seems the majority lack the mental acuity to see what is going on and are falling all over themselves to be enemies of the Police. They're blissfully unaware of the fact that they will have to damn sure make friends with the criminals.

Shortshanks & j-fled are glad to see this season of out loud hatred and disrespect toward the Police.

They're happy that shit-heads are so openly and brazenly assaulting, attacking and turning firearms upon the Police.

There is no OUTRAGE by the majority while this is happening.

Yet there is plenty of shit-talk because Policemen (being far from stupid and willingly self sacrificing as the majority of people want desperately to believe) in wonderfully human fashion, have taken some measures to try and insulate themselves from the soul-crushing aggravation of being demonized, scrutinized and marginalized with extreme prejudice in addition to mitigating potential career, financial and family harm.

Yet cries of "Fire 'em all! Take their sweet pensions and early retirement away. It's their fault the city is broke. It's their fault the gang bangers and dope dealers are out of control. Where were they when those two women were attacked?" roll so easily and taste so sweet in the mouths of many.

Daley has the public flat out suckered...

How dare a Police Officer exhibit any kind of human trait.

Just shut up and die bravely already so they can see the pretty uniforms on the news and feel good and safe.

Shorty & j-fled command this!

ZZZZZZZZZZZ indeed.

Watch these officers get hammered...

Watch nothing happen to j-fled for rank cowardice.

Chicago Police Officers have become disposable in the eyes of the people. Where is the outrage?

the guy who took the photos said that he tried calling the district to report the officers and was asked "what do you want us to do about it?" That's probably why he took the pics to the media.

That was my first thought too; typical copper response sends another running to the media. I hope whoever was working the desk and took that call is proud of himself

Anybody who ever worked midnights ,God how I hated them, took a little time to close their eyes.I always tried to stay up but when 4 or 5 in the morning came I was done.I rotated for 15 years and worked with many people no one was immune. This is a non-issue.Fuck that fat little troll.

This is what the people in that district think of you.

The guy who took this video represents the MAJORITY of people living in that district. The people you protect hate you.

Remember that.

That's why rotation was the best thing in the world. I worked 1st watch for 2 years when we went to straight watches. The most miserable 2 years of my life. At least when we rotated it was only 38 days every 3rd period. you were miserable, but it was done before you knew it. Plus you got a feel for the problems on the beat at all times of the day. Everybody had a hole to camp out for a few. But everybody covered for each other. If you missed a job, rarely happened, somebody would answer up for you and get you up. That way nobody was ever redlined. But that was a different time and department. Even the Sgt's holed out, but you kept an eye out for them because they'd cover your ass in a heartbeat. At least with rotation you had camaraderie. you were on a watch because that was the crew you worked the best with. All 3 watches still got along great. Damn that seems like a long time ago. In those days this wasn't a job. You enjoyed coming to work. You worked your ass off because you wanted to. Because the bosses were great and everybody was watching each others backs. If you weren't sure of something one of the coppers knew what to do. Everybody had knowledge depending what they used to do on the job. some knew DUI's, some guns, some narcotics, but everybody knew who to go to for help. Nobody ever looked at you like an idiot for asking questions. It was the mindset, better to do it right than not ask. Call for a supervisor. Never happened. Sgt's would tell you if I'm needed, I'll know. don't call me. Do what needs to be done and we'll take it from there. But those were times that will never return. Now everybody knows everything. As my FTO told me on my first day. you will see everything on this job, but the day you think you know everything is the time to quit. You will never know everything on this job, no matter what. Thanks JS, I still live by that. To this day I thank my FTO and watch for all that I learned in those years. They taught me how to be a cop but still be respectful of each other and how to treat the people. Sorry to ramble, but the deparment of years ago will always be missed.

WTF!... Even the Pope falls asleep on the job!

Pope Benedict XVI briefly nodded off in front of tens of thousands of people during an outdoor mass in Malta’s capital, Valletta. April 18th, 2010

When I visited Los Angeles many years ago, the LAPD graciously offered to put me up in their station dormitory.

When the CPD was first founded we had station dormitories... (err.. I'm not that old that I personally remember them).

The NYPD and many other larger city police departments still maintain dormitories in stations for their officers. The NYPD called their stations, “Station Houses” and some state police departments refer to their stations as "Barracks" because of that reason.

Stay safe, I think I'll turn in early tonight.

Remember, if faced with suspension time take the day(s), never ever give them comp. time.

Start taping these CTA slugs and post it on You Tube. if possible get the plate of the vehicle, outside number or better yet the run number.
I see these drivers smoke on the bus in the turn arounds all the time. Sure it's pimpy but it's still a at least an ordinance violation.

The guy who shot the video said he did it out of concern for the officers safety. WTF???? If he was concerned about their safety, he should have told their partner, not sent the video to the media. But he got his fat ass its 15 seconds of fame!

What if the guy didn't have a camera, what if he had a gun? Oh sure, the partners were drinking coffee in the 7-11, but they didn't see this guy outside filming, did they. That's not watching your partners back, that's called fucking off. When did the unacceptable become acceptable with you guys?

Stop bitching, and start thinking...it's really not that difficult!

What if? Well, what if one of the officers in the 7-11 happen to turn around at the exact moment this retard was pointing his camera phone at one of the officers in their car. From that distance, and being tired on top of that, would it be unreasonable that he might have thought it was a weapon?

Oh, I can see it now, "Police gun down unarmed man."

So now I can't pull over into some parking lot and grab 20 winks while my partner stays awake?

Fine. If I'm supposed to be perfect in my job then Mr and Mrs John Q. Public will have to be the same way.

Driving with your cell phone in your hand? Ticket.

Get called to an accident scene? Tickets for everybody.

No more passes.

They want a police department that is held to a higher standard then we should enforce ALL the laws and municipal codes of this fair city.

AH!! Let the favors begin. Who is the Dumb Blond Chick heard bragging? You know the one with a house full of kids working midnights in 014Th. Whose Mother happens to be a Lt. and has once again called in ANOTHER favor for her daughter and her daughters partner/friend to be moved to some team to work 2ND watch while working cops get the boot to fit them in. What a bunch of Bull Shit I guess her Mom sold all her tickets to the Promotional party. When does this kinda Shit End!!!

4/25/2010 04:57:00 AM

Plz do not hate, she earned it. If someone was tossed off a team for her and her partner, then they were not pulling their weight. This has nothing to do with clout! What it comes down to is, good old school police work.

Come on boys and girls, you have to admit it looks bad, the public doe not want to hear that working midnights is rough, if it's your job you have to adjust, with crime running rampant and the police just now getting a 10 percent raise these police officers should not be sleeping in a police car in uniform whether their defenseis that they were on a break or lunch, it just doesn't look good to the un- informed public, these are not old timers, but young cops who I'm sorry to say just don't have the same work ethic as us old timers who thru experience would at least get out of the public view,, remember what the public see is what they believe, these cops deserve a few days off. And I am not anti police, just a back my guys always Sgt.

I'm a PO and I have to agree with the Sgt. I understand what it is to work midnights and I feel for these coppers they just needed to doze in a secure location. 7-11 is not it. Partners - take care of your partner. If you know he/she is sleepy, take appropriate steps to protect them. All we have is each other.

Stop it kiddies you are all missing the point just like the goof was taking a picture he could have been shooting stabbing etc.Yea midnights are tough but there's no excuse for putting yourself in harms way unnecessarily. Sure their partners were inside having a cup but it doesn't matter your partner could be right next to you and not see whats coming and you can't help him or her because of forty winks. It takes only a second for your snooze to become permanent or lead to a tragedy. Lots of nuts out here take care and stay alert.

We didn't, asshat. We said we understood it. It happens when you interrupt the body's natural rhythms.

As for our readers, they bring up some valid points, but a vast majority don't defend it, they understand it because they've worked it - same as we have.

Stop reading what isn't there rookie.

When I lived in east Rogers Park and walked my dogs on the beach between Touhy & Pratt around 5:30 a.m. in the summer, there were as many as five cars down there with officers appearing to be sleeping. Since I was a regular, the guys would say hi as I passed, so I know they weren't sleeping.

I loved it! I felt safer with the cars there and then some dumb bitch complained and the cars left.

Shortly afterward a woman was raped in the park around 5:30 a.m. while walking her dog. I still maintain it wouldn't have happened had the cars been there.

Uh, YEAH, duh! You're missing the point. No one should be sleeping on the job. We get that. But Joe Citizen, who has taken it to another level by rubbing it in our faces, is what I think irks everyone here. I've worked midnights for about 6 years and seen plenty of bus drivers, security people, nurses, doctors, and other night shift workers catching some ZZZZ's, and I would NEVER have the balls to judge them knowing how hard it is to stay awake. That being said, these coppers need to be aware of their surroundings and the fact that John Q. Public is ALWAYS watching us. IF we are having a rough night and exhaustion sets in, rendering us useless, we have to find a less conspicuous place to catch a nap with the understanding that one of us is ALWAYS watching out. (For the 99 units, the station lot is probably the safest and let someone know!)

These things will happen from time to time. Its just the way it is. Anyone who was worked the night shift for any length of time has had it happen to them. Cops are not immune to being sleepy at zero dark thirty any more than they are immune to all the other foibles human beings have.

Its probably best to deal with this kind of thing in an open and upfront way, but PR wise that is a very tough thing to do.

The answer seems to be do what you have to do, but don't get caught. That does not sound real fair, but life is often unfair.
