Canines Targeted

Gee, you think that the big blue and white squad car parked out front might be a clue that a police canine lives there?
  • Police are investigating whether a pile of green rat poison found on the front doorstep of a Canine Unit officer's home Tuesday is in any way related to recent suspected arsons of at least two Canine Unit vehicles on the Northwest Side, Chicago police said.

The officer returned home in the Edison Park neighborhood about 4:15 p.m. to find a pile of green rat poison on his front stoop...
Targets of opportunity. Driving by a parked squad car late at night, bust out the windows or maybe torch it. You see the squad car there, run to the local hardware store, grab some poison, toss it on the porch. You might get lucky and poison the dog.

Good thing the exempts can all park in their garages.

This is nothing new, this has been going on for many years. K-9 Veh's have always been targeted. I have had my squad vandalized on many occasions, everything from it being keyed, tires slashed, windows broken, the list goes on.Most K-9 guys are very vigilant when it comes to poison control. The poison left on the officers stoop, probably came from some pissed off neighbor. If an actual attempt were to be made, poison would have probably been placed at many locations. But like I said, most K-9 guys will check there yards, I know I do. But you are right to say, that I can't park my squad in the garage, it must be parked legally on the street, near my home. Thats the rule!

Hey I'm not a cop so I hope I can post in the comments but I can say for 100% sure that if I were on a jury of a guy who got caught trying to poison a police dog, I would vote for the maximum possible sentence.

My dad was a k9 handler in Vietnam and he said that the two dogs he handled (one KIA) were the most valuable assets his team ever had. He says the dogs saved countless lives of men and I'm sure Chicagos police dogs have served like that too.

What sort of disgusting rodent would try to harm a POLICE DOG? I hope they get sent away to prison or a long time or run over by the train. Scum.

This is what happens when the mayor shits on his police and tell the public it's OK to do the same. I'm not sure you can recover from this when it gets this bad.

Take care of yourselves the best you can and move out of this shit hole of a city. All is lost. It's not worth risking your future to try to fix what the libtards and dumbocRATS have done here.

Put every exempt rank member in a marked car to be used only for work. No personal business. They should, but do not, pay federal taxes on the benefit of a take home car. I have seen these cars at the summer resort areas of Wisconsin and Michigan. If they need a car so badly in order to respond to incidents or attend meetings, they will have one, but it will be a blue and white.

My wife remembers that car being parked there when she was a kid - it's practically a fixture in the neighborhood. I believe whomever did this (while extraordinarily stupid believing it would actually work) was NOT from around here.

I'm not a cop and know that ties are strong here between neighbors. If someone doesn't like the police, they don't move to Edison Park.

Edison park is not the golden neighborhood anymore. I love when cops talk that edison park is so great and ill tell a fellow officer a burglary happened there with always an excuse and denial. Scum is everywhere protect your family and dont let your guard down for a minute. Devon and harlem is all section 8.

More abuse to animals in Plain City, Ohio, near Columbus. Videotape of sadistic psychopaths beating the heads of cows and their calves with crowbars and then stabbing them with pitchforks.

Such torture should be strictly reserved for two-legged animals.

Hey, c'mon, don't forget there's a large segment of the public that appreciates what you (and your dogs) do; it's just that we're not in your faces all the time because we're busy minding our own business and behaving ourselves--and trying to afford the extortion wreaked upon us by that pirate ship of a City Hall. Why don't we just all resolve to vote them out instead of putting up with it?

Dope dealers must targeting Narco-Sniffing Dogs.

They can get pretty bold knowing that they are likely not to get caught without enough police on the street.

Someone intentionally killing the cop, I'd vote for frying the somebitch.

Someone trying to poison the same cops four legged partner, I'm thinking partner means equal, if I feel that way about the cop, I feel that way about the doggie partner.

Besides, most dogs I've met have been better than many humans.

I also want a big bowl of Heinekens before bedtime.

What exact addresses are section 8? When are the P.O.'s and leadership in 016 going to get proactive and patrol 016 and start stopping these shitheads? Go through them and arrest them.

If this shit keeps up, then 016 won't be livable. The 016 30 sector looks more like 025! Scary!

i think people overestimate the amount of sec 8 in 016.there is some of them on central by elston, you can thank realtor george michael for that, and all of his buildings are also for sale.which is good.a family right at harlem and devon and also over on the street behind superdawg there is *one* family, her kids go to onhan with mine.the big yellow brick building known as the heartbreak hotel on NW hwy-6000 block has a lot of them and they have for at least the last ten years.theyre all pretty quiet at night,i never see them in the 2 bars around there.also there seems to be some in the buildings down by habettler bowl.and most of the hispanic families are homeowners and pay lots of taxes like the rest of us.i'm not the police, but i think the cops do a good job over here of keeping an eye on the potential jagoff kids.considering how shorthanded you are.i'm not familiar with the mt greenwood area etc,but i still think this is the best part of the city.

E P not golden anymore... Section 8 is strewn through out the 16th district. The Polish buffer is gone and the 30 sector south of Irving is an expansion of 025 and 014. There are a lot of good blocks but few of those citizens actually will stand up for anything. The Aldermen are powerless or useless. Uptown west - Humbolt park north would be a more acurate description of 16. The 10 sector and 21's beats are the last bastions of civilization as the savages migrate north and west. 1614 north of lawrence is nothing but subsidized and they can walk to Oriole park and big oaks neighborhoods. Jefferson park El to 6 corners is turning into skid row. Portage park has few white faces anymore and the common language is now puerto rican. Dickenson park forget about it. 1631's beat will be transformed from Narragansett west as the scum from oak park and elmwood park move north becoming much like Galewood. There are plenty of dog ass coppers in this district but there are also many hard working knowledgable cops as well. This is the largest district in the city and if it were to remove itself from Chicago it would be the second largest area populated below the city itself in the state. Now police that with the remnants of the few retired on duty and dog asses that exist there that all districts have and see what you can do. This district is stretched thin over beats as huge as some districts. It is an eye opener to work there to see what walks and lives around you and what they told you in the academy about saving cats from trees and never answering a call is bullshit. These neighborhoods are changing and fast and there is little that the police, politics, or economy are going to change overnight. This has been coming for some time now, open your eyes and look around you.. And Devon and Harlem does have some shitheads in those apts, used to be a halfway house on 6800 blk of devon and Edison Park is still a good place to live for right now but the shit is here.

You mean what is left of 016? All one man cars and half down. You are lucky to have 3 beat cars assigned west of Nagle and north of Irving park. The beats are very large to cover. Granted the service calls are low but the land area to cover is huge. That is the price city workers pay to live in Edison park.

...and I think a lot of people are wrongly using "Section 8" as synonymous with "rental apartment." There are damned few apartments available in Edison and Norwood to begin with, let alone "Section 8" (and it's not like that is just handed out on street corners -- it can take years to get that assistance) but that doesn't much matter since the lower middle class and working poor have largely been driven out as their local sources of employment were destroyed in favor of real estate speculation.

A tremendous number of rental units were eliminated in the condominium frenzy -- one building after another was "converted" by every sort of fast-buck artist you can imagine. Me And My Cousin From Poland Realty...

NW Hwy used to be an interesting, active neighborhood, a mixture of industries and a lot of the ordinary people who worked in them, living in 10-flats, etc. They could often literally walk to work, walk to the bank, drug store, post office, grocery store, etc. Bus right there. It was life in a working city. Pretty quiet at night, too. Working people sleep.

It was destroyed in ten years. Now --

A. The only people who live "steps from everything" are condo owners who have cars and don't need to walk

and

B. "Everything" is largely gone anyway -- unless you want an Edward Jones Investments, a Chase Bank, a tango-dancing parlor, or some trendy restaurant full of loud Yuppies.

My original comment may have been misunderstood -- here's a re-phrase.

What kinda idiot would pour rat poison on a K-9 cop's front steps? It's not like the handler is going to come out with the dog and then just stand there having a cigarette while the pooch bolts a big pile of bright green D-Con. (I think they are supposed to muzzle the dogs when being moved out to the car anyway -- rules or something)

The car-burners and poison-pourers are probably the same locals who were stealing light bars off squad cars a little while ago. Not much brainpower there.

I live on NW Hwy and Canfield and walk everywhere in the neighborhood. Parking sucks, if you haven't noticed. I refuse to pay one red cent to those stupid parking meter boxes either; if they get anything, it's going to be about 16oz of Gorilla Glue.
