Detroit Tragedy

  • A sleeping 7-year-old girl was shot and killed when an officer's gun went off while Detroit police were searching a duplex for a suspect in the slaying of a teenager, a police official said.

  • Godbee said officers with the department's Special Response Team set off a flash grenade as they entered the apartment with their guns drawn about 12:40 a.m. Sunday with a warrant to look for a suspect in the Friday slaying of a 17-year-old boy.

The lead officer encountered a 46-year-old woman immediately inside the front room of the house and "some level of physical contact" ensued during which the officer's gun went off, Godbee said. The officers had identified themselves as police, he said.

  • The officers had a search warrant and were looking for a 34-year-old man suspected in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jarean Blake.

[...] Officers arrested the suspect during the search, Godbee said. Jones said the suspect wasn't in his apartment but one upstairs that officers raided at the same time.
Good warrant, murder suspect in the building, but someone who thinks they have a right to resist and attack the police ends up causing the needless death of a child. But guess who will get blamed?

At least they didn't shoot the dog, too. Then there'd be real public outrage.

It's the same shit pal, here in Chicago. How about when we used to kick ass and do search warrants and encounter dogs waiting to bite your leg off and you shoot the vicious buggers. Then the bosses started bending under pressure from God knows where in the ivory tower of, well, lets not shoot the dogs too much anymore, lets see if we can contain them or mace em. WTF? I never thought we would see the day. I mean that's why the dope boys had the dogs, to bite your leg off. The own department bosses would question your safety. The real police always get blamed for anything. No one has got your back these days. They try and tell you they got your back but it's all bull. And especially with the FOP we got in this decade. Try to do some good and they look at you like you're the bad guy. Nonsense, just plain nonsense.

I've got some news for you. The press is already blaming the Police. One of the headlines in a Detroit newspapar was "Police kill 7 year old". And watch CNN's take on it.

I hope they charge the grandma with murder. My prayers for the child and the officer.

Who should get blamed? The murderer because it was his actions that set the whole chain of events in motion. In a perfect world, he would be charged with that child's murder as well.

I read that last night. I thought the same thing.

This is what happens when big government repeatedly rewards "bad behavior."

Using the ghetto dwellers "circular logic" all of their missteps will be minimized, while the police actions or responses will be MAGNIFIED.

I feel sorry for the cop. He feels bad enough I'm sure, but now will be dragged through the mud!

OFF TOPIC:

Calumet Park is designating 127th Street that runs through their town as "Obama Blvd"..just a note, observe that after this change takes effect "all criminal activity will magically cease, and the garbage will pick itself up off the streets and sidewalks."

I guess when it becomes Obama Blvd the populace will get a big dose of civic pride and alter their behavior. But I'm not holding my breath. 40+ years after similarly naming a street in every major city (MLK BLvd), the result has been the same.

When I first saw this story I thought it was going to be another "drug warrant" SWAT story where someone gets shot and the grand take is a bag of marginal weed.

It seems like a legitimate warrant, in every sense, and some non compliant idiot causing a tragedy.

When you give humans weapons and authority sometimes tragic things are going to happen. There is no way to completely avoid that; although, training and limiting such situations to only when necessary will make a difference.

Please stay on this story... there's no blog like this for Detroit cops and you need to counter this media pity party.

Why is no one asking

1. Why do you have a murder suspect in your home? Surely this wasn't some surprise to the parents

2. Why did you fight with the police? They act like the cop shot the girl because he didn't have his safety on or something. If grandma hadn't fought with the cop, the kid would be alive period.

There ya go. Adults who know that minor children in the house and they still act like animals with no regard for anyone else, just their own welfare.

People get the neighborhood they deserve.

The officer is emotionally destroyed forever.

This is the parent's fault, but Detroit's version of Loevy & Loevy will be all over this looking for a payday.

My Heart goes out to the Officer. For the rest of his life he will have to deal with what happened as the civilans will cast blame upon him and not themselves for what has happened and for that child that will never grow up. A tragedy for the Officers who were trying to do something good.

Al and Jesse where are you? Maybe the murder victim's family can sue the family of the little girl after they sue the city of Detroit. Or maybe the PO can sue the family for attacking him causing his weapon to discharge. Or maybe the state can sue the family for all the years of social services tax dollars. Or maybe Obama can bring everyone to the beer garden because again the police acted stupidly. Or maybe we can get off our dead asses and start voting out the politicians that condone this lifestye and continue to take tax dollars to support it.

The father said "day posed to be trained for this sort of stuff...". Hey Dad, why were you harbouring a fugitive? It's a terrible thing for a child to be killed. Guess who's really at fault here DAD?! No Cop goes out and says "Boy I can't wait to kill a kid..." Once again, somehow it's my fault.

The law says that you can't interfere with the police when they are doing their job and if you do, the resulting actions are your fault because you caused it. When did we as a society become stupid enough to allow these dirt bags a payday for their felonious action? The same wrongheaded logic gives us these politicians that are running things from the city and county to the US.

News reporting "the first 48" had the whole incident on tape and the video shows an officer firing one shot into the house from the outside after the flash bang was thrown. Jesus I hope not!!!

The family may be at fault for harboring a fugitive but can we prove that they knew? There are also cases where cops bust down doors and have incorrect addresses, maybe that is why the grandmother fought. One last comment, drugs are also bought and paid for in the suburbs, and in Chicago we have individuals who break the law in Bridgeport. Never even read about cops busting their doors down with flash bang grenades. Just saying.

Ya, the allegation is the cops fired before fighting w/ grannie .. in other words they lied. I know we've all heard this nonsense before but let's see the video.
