Marked Cars Torched

First burglaries of houses, now take-home cars being lit on fire:
  • The Chicago Police Bomb and Arson Unit is investigating the torching of two locked and parked police vehicles on the Northwest Side early this morning, police said.

    The first instance occurred about 2:15 a.m. in the Big Oaks neighborhood, according to Chicago Police News Affairs [...]. In that case a marked 2006 Crown Victoria K-9 unit vehicle was set on fire, police said.

    About five minutes later in the Jefferson Park neighborhood, an unmarked police vehicle was set on fire, police said.
The Channel 5 link is labeled "Crazy-Night-for-Cops."

We don't think it's "crazy." It's a culmination of factors:
  • politicians and reverends painting the police as enemies;
  • a broken judicial system that gives probation for battery and weapon offenders instead of years behind bars, even when they attack police;
  • abetted by the media who play a notable incident thousands of times on TV (Abbate) without putting it into perspective (he never should have been hired in the first place, but clout got him through) or covering the fact that 99% of cops were appalled and disgusted by his conduct, and finally, implying he got away with something when he got probation, which is all anyone gets in Cook County Courts.
Here's what's really crazy - someone at Fleet mentioned that the one Canine vehicle has the windows replaced 5 or more times a year because the officer is required to park in front of his house, which makes it a prime target of opportunity on the major thoroughfare he lives on.

Oh shit. One of these wasn't the one parked just off of Canfield is it? Everyone knows the K9 car I'm talking about because it's practically a fixture of the community. My wife remembers a car being parked there when she was a kid 20 years ago, and it's always been here since I moved to the hood 13 years ago.

Where is his supervisor?
I called the 18th district and talked to the f/1 working the desk and asked to speak the the watch cammander. She said the WC didn't take calls from the citizens and she was to BUSY to talk to me.

Let's not underestimate Dirty Gerry Callahan! He was suspected of damaging the unmarked squad of Bob Weiscoff (or somethin'). Bob's the C.O. of call back. Had the windows broken (all of 'em) on his take-home squad.

You know, when a drunk gets drunk, he thinks about the people he hates the most and that fires-up the hate. Then he goes after their property.

Still lookin' for me, Gerry?

To anonymous ot @ 2:13 a.m.,

If you have the supervisor's name, why don't you write a damn letter where somebody can investigate the rudeness for you?

Why add more misery, Mr. Law-Abiding Rules-Up-Your-Butt, to a post where the cops are learning they're a target of violence?

oh, I know: you pay their salary.
Go jump in a deep, dirty lake and take your unhappiness with you.

Best of luck to you guys and gals in the CPD. I keep reading the stolen equipment and I keep thinking; terror can be home-grown. Please be careful. I hope somebody in your agency is putting all this together, because it sure looks like conspiracy to me--against you or lawful citizenry. All they need is critical mass.

Sincerely,
Ann T.

You are SO RIGHT! I've seen the same thing in Hyde Park. Officers on bikes, braids halfway down their backs, looking unprofessional as hell. And apparently, it's all good with their supervisors/watch commanders, who apparently don't or won't look at their officers prior to sending them out onto the streets. If you don't look like you have any self-respect, you won't find any out in these streets here in Shitcago. Maybe the officers who drive those take home cars should park them either in their garages, or in the nearest District station parking lot. It doesn't seem to be very smart in this day and age to advertise to the public that you're the police off duty, and where you live.

You are an asshole. The appearance of on-duty personnel is clearly outlined on paper. Until the paper is changed to allow lengthy hair, lengthy braids, long or short dreds, huge afros, hair dyed in colors not natural to the human species, do-rags, beards, earrings of any sort, freaking clawlike or talonlike fingernails and fingernails painted in bright hot pink or uniform blue, clownlike facial makeup, outrageous sunglasses, uniform articles that have not been washed or cleaned since Jimmy Carter was president, jeans with holes in them, and NO JUSTICE-NO PEACE tee shirts or any tee shirt with a message or statement of any sort, officers should display some self-respect and respect for their "costume of choice" and adhere to the order, and present themselves as professionals. Even though society is swirling in the bowl, should we just jump in and join up?

No one is saying it makes or breaks them as a police officer, but it does make them look unprofessional and it's not allowed. The dreads look horrible. I'm a female and I always make sure my earrings are off when I go back to work because we're not allowed to wear them yet I see females with hoop earrings and other jewelry. Long hair and jewelry is also an officer safety issue when you get in fights.

---------------------------
O'Hare has long been where they hide cops who can't cut it on the streets and are just putting in their time to retirement. Was that way when I lived in Chicago in the late 70s, early 80s.

I don't know how bad it is these days, but it was common to see cops with knee braces on, so fat they could hardly walk, or even plaster casts on arms or legs.

I remember passing through O"Hare about 10 years ago and seeing an older cop who was walking around in obvious pain and barely able to move, much less do any police work.

Some of these guys need to be put on disability. They just are not able to do the work anymore, and the department ought to do the right thing and retire them on disability.
