Off-Duty CPD Wounded (UPDATE - RIP Officer)

  • An off-duty Chicago Police officer was shot late Wednesday during an apparent armed robbery, police said. Two other people were reportedly wounded.

The off-duty officer was shot about 10:30 p.m. in the 8400 block of South King Drive, police said. The shooting appears to be an armed robbery.

Chicago Police requested State Police assistance in locating the maroon Nissan Maxima involved in the shooting. The car was last seen heading northbound on the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94), Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Anthony Hoop said.

He said three people were wounded in the shooting.

Prayers and well-wishes only.

UPDATE: Officer Thomas Wortham IV, recently returned from a second tour in Iraq serving his country, assigned to the 007th District (Englewood) and just home from honoring Law Enforcement deceased in Washington DC, was murdered when three offenders attempted to take his motorcycle. Wortham's father, a retired police sergeant, killed one assailant and wounded a second. The third is being sought at this time. RIP Thomas Wortham IV.

This is unreal.

An off-duty, Chicago Police Department Officer gets shot-in-the-head by THREE (3) punks attempting to rob the same off-duty CPD Officer while he was sitting on his motorcycle getting ready to leave his family's home?

Let's keep this officer and his family in our thoughts and prayers. Saint Michael The Archangel defend us in battle and protect the CPD as well as the critically-injured officer.

And someone get The Real Police on the line to get these scumbags!

The senselessness of this crime is hard to swallow. This veteran of two tours in Iraq and three years of service with CPD is killed over a motorcycle. He survived combat but is killed because some shithead wanted his bike. Killed in front of his father's house and in front of his father. His father is a retired Sgt. of CPD. The whole situation sucks.

Jody, we have to take the kid gloves off and take care of these thug, hood rat, violent driven, drains on society. This Officer was killed for a fucking motorcycle! Does this make sense to you? Give us the green light, the support, the backing and fuck politics, fuck IPRA, fuck Daley and fuck these low life shitbags! I'm so fucking pissed my head hurts.

My heart felt condolence to the family. I cannot begin to imagine your pain, loss and suffering. The crime scene was horrible and your loss irreplaceable. We as a family need to end the pussy-footin' around and strike fear into these cowardly thugs. I am frustrated and angry.

To all who responded, thank you. You showed incredible professionalism and compassion for a downed Officer. We are all we have and we need to take care of each other.

May God take you in His arms and embrace your soul. Eternal Rest Brother.

First, RIP officer.

May your family and your family in Blue find comfort in these difficult times.

Now, to all of you who think the National Guard will help out - STOP.

They cannot and will not help.

The city got handcuffed police department it wanted about ten years or so ago — when the mayor decided to let poverty pimps (fake Ministers and Reverends) have a say into police matters.

This effect has culminated in the violence you see today — the thugs know that there is no time for their crime - so they just go at it.

Look at the REAL problem - don't just spout off about the national Guard coming in Chicago. And, to do what? Stand on the corners with guns? The CPD did that in Englewood and the thugs STILL shot at them.

Nope, the problem lies right before you — but will you be honest enough to open your eyes, see it, and then deal with it?

Doubt it - it is easier to just be given handouts by these "community activists" and store front preachers.

An absolute shame - ABSOLUTE SHAME, this young Officer served this city and this country, and his father did the same. Now his father is left to burry his son — it SHOULD NOT BE like this.

Open your eyes people.... The emperor has no clothes on.

I heard this story on Newsradio 78, and get this, they followed up the story this morning with a piece about 2 coppers killing someone's dog (4 legged) during a domestic, with a statement from the family on how the dog was non-violent. I called the editor's desk and told them that they should be ashamed of themselves. What were they trying to do, achieve balance? A war veteran, loving son, and public servant gets gunned down, his father has to intervene and bear a terrible burden, 2 offenders wanted, and they run a story about 2 coppers shooting a dog. The woman on the phone said she would relay my concerns to the news director. Unbelievable. The sons and daughters of this city deserve better.

Times like this persuade an officer to reflect on his duty; what it means, and who you are in relation to it. I feed my spirit daily, in an effort to assure that I remain a soldier in my Lord's righteous fight. I pray for my brethern, that he/she may be strong as well. I pray that we realize our full purpose, and that we understand that we too are soldiers in a war. A war between good and evil, righteous and immoral, Godly, and wicked. Take solace in knowing that you are the chosen children of our Father, and that you have been given the charge to protect and build his kingdom. I read the following today, and pray that it brings some peace to those who are morning our brother's death.

P.O. Clay, 3rd Watch, 007

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns -- May 20, 2010: Be obedient to My Word, for it will be your place of safety and protection in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation. You can do nothing about this generation, but you can do plenty to be people of the Spirit and truth. Maintain your integrity even when surrounded by darkness and trouble. You are people of light and not darkness, so walk in the light, says the Lord. Walk in the Spirit!

Philippians 2:14-16 Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.

When I was at Brother Rice in the late 60's, I remember a teacher telling us that the world was a battlefield between good and evil, and that we would have to decide which side we were going to fight on. My condolences to the his family, and to the officers in 007, that is two tragedies in one year.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

I now learned from watching the news at 11:30 wgn news that it was over his motorcycle ? WTF !!! His father who is a retired Sgt. came out to help his son and was able to KILL one assailant and wound the other scumbag, and the saddest part is that Officer Wortham SERVED OUR COUNTRY - 3 TOURS AND RETURNS HOME SAFELY TO THIS !!!.
I'm so sorry for your loss Sgt Wortham sir. Godspeed to you sir . Now that rat bastard Daley is trying to politicize this tragedy by asking SCOTUS to uphold the gun ban. He says a gun ban would have prevented this tragedy.

A gun ban wouldn't have stopped this, only throwing people in and keep them in jail would.

The other officer is correct, find the other two offenders and hope they resist capture.

This is a complete disgrace and tragic loss of human life, especially the life of a young man who had given so much of himself already. Can you imagine all the good he would have continued to do, if he had been able to live a full lifetime? Not only has his family and friends been robbed of a good man and citizen in this crime, but an entire city and nation was also robbed of his good heart and dedicated service. Shame on the worthless low-lives who committed this crime. Shame! Who raises these punks to behave like this anyway? I want your motorcycle so I'm going to kill you for it? Jail is too good for people with that kind of mentality.

The scene at the ME's office was very moving this morning. Forty squad cars with blue lights met the CFD ambulance and escort on Harrison/Leavitt. After the CFD ambulance reached the office, about 100 to 125 officers came to attention and saluted the officer as six officers carried him toward the ME's Office. At the door a chaplain said a prayer for the officer. Attention was called again and a final salute was given as the officer was carried into the ME's Office. Besides commands and the prayer, all that was heard was the wind, the birds in the trees, and the cirping of dying radio batteries. God bless the officer and the CPD.

Almost all of the PO's that have been murdered recently were not only exceptional cops but military veterans.

They were double volunteers who did not take the easy road or shirk the call of duty.

They did not run in fear but fought the good fight like true warriors.

TO ALL THOSE WHO WORKED THE SCENE, CONVOYED THE AMBULANCE, AND STOOD WATCH AT THE MORGUE. TO THOSE WHO GUARD THE FAMILY OF OUR FALLEN AND WORK THE CASE DILIGENTLY: You remind me of the professional and personal bond that we all share, the bearing, the attitudes, the courage, strength, skill, and professionalism displayed at these times, which come too often. You restore a certain underlying sense of pride that we so rarely get to experience anymore. I do wish that it isn't for these things, but to every single one of you, for your dedication and composure, I commend you and continually pray for you all. BE SAFE!

Does anyone know the appropriate spot to send a donation in Office Wortham's name? I'm so angry and sad.
