"Act of God"? Or Stupidity?

Big storms yesterday. So big that it cracked tens of dozens of windows throughout downtown, including a few on the Sears Tower.

But the most damage downtown appeared to be directly across from City Hall. The 70 mph winds carried what seemed to be a dump truck load of pea gravel all the way from Iowa, across Illinois and deposited it up and down Daley Plaza, Jackson and Washington. The power of these storms to actually carry rocks over 100 miles....

What? The gravel didn't come from Iowa? Well where did it come from then? We mean, nobody would be so silly as to put a couple of tons of gravel on top of buildings, would they? Not 11 stories up in the air where who knows what might happen to it in a strong wind?

Walking the route of today's ethnic parade event, the damage wrought by short-sighted thinking is obvious. Gravel and glass mixed for literally block and blocks. We aren't kidding when we say the building across from Shortshanks' rooftop garden looks like it lost over two dozen windows with another few dozen cracked. The scaffolds and cranes are going to be busy for weeks and damage estimates we heard run to $500,000 just for glass. Labor and installation will probably push the total higher and who knows how much the City is spending at this moment to clean up the streets and plaza for Monday.

The City That Works.

It's really quite common, in fact almost universal with flat top roofs. The pea gravel makes a walking surface, weighs down the rubber seal to prevent the wind from moving it or tearing it, and also protects it from ultraviolet.

Okay, I need help from our city's finest.....my truck was hit and run in Veteran Square Mall while I was in paying my cable bill.....a witness left a note identifying the red van..

License plate # K127703
Time of day : 12:27 PM

I went to the station nearby to fill out a report and was able to get the following:
Make GMC
Model Van
Color Red
Year 1995
Regsisted to Eliada Mora (Ramiro)
4039 N. Avers Ave
Chicago, IL 60618

Now, I went to People Finders, Zaba Search, and Intelius and came up with his phone number, alias, and other addresses. But, I get the 'Mr Superman No Home' routine when I call him....

Any suggestions???

Also, Aliada Mora (Ramiro) has the following (3) outstanding violations on the van:

Notice of Violation # 7002647913

Red light violation
K127703 IL 5/12/2010
$100.00

Notice of Violation # 9179420615

No city sticker or improper display
K127703 IL 5/18/2010
$120.00

Notice of Violation # 9179446470

No city sticker or improper display
K127703 IL 6/4/2010
$120.00

If he/she tries and pays these tickets, will they put a hold on them? What goes on now?

Can anyone find out where the tickets for no city stciker were written at? A location, time of day, and day of the week? Anything?

Worked 1st watch and saw all the little gravel rocks strewn about the sidewalks and Daley Plaza with workers coming in early this morning to sweep up the evidence. What idiot would dump loose landscaping rocks on top of a building in a windy city like Chicago? Who is going to pay for the damages? What about police officers detailed to the Central Business District from the Patrol Districts for traffic control? I mean,"What the fuck!!!".

I remember when new roofs were put on the Cabrini High Rises back in the mid 80s........they didn't use gravel on those flat roofs--they used fist sized and larger rocks.

More than one copper was pelted with those until they were all removed.

My cousin is a union roofing contractor and from the beginning he said all this rooftop garden shit is ridiculous. A roof is a roof. It is not meant to be a playground, deck, garden, etc. You put down a roof to protect the building. Then they start laying down lawn chairs, tables, grills, pavers and wonder why the roof starts leaking.

Stupid.

Pea gravel?

That shit largely disappeared from new roofing or reroofing two decades ago.

Now the new thang is a "rubber" roof topped off with a white elastomeric coating. I've had one on my flat roof for going on twenty years and topped it off with the coating a few years ago. No leaks at all except once after a major storm.

My guess is someone in the Daley family may secretly own a piece of a pea gravel quarry and a roofing company.

Because the tickets you listed are all over 7 days old..the ability to find the address where they were issued at is gone...even by a Revenue employee that isn't at a terminal in one of the offices.

If it makes you feel any better...the red light notice will double in a few days, as will the City Sticker Tickets. That van is also Boot Eligible as of 6/04/10 because it has a third active citation.

Any Copper here can tell you that you should file a criminal complaint for Hit and Run, and you could probably get them to also let you file a complaint for Failure to Stop and ID after an Accident. You also have enough Info to call 3-1-1 and file a non-emergency police report over the phone. Option 3 I believe.

Thanks 2211 for handling the 3 susp M/1s sitting in the car at 109 and central Park at Approx 1815 on Saturday. Your code about them having "Civil Rights" and they can be on the public way was a nice way for you to blow it off without doing anything. If they were sitting in a car that means you can question the driver, ask for his D/L, Insurance and so on. You can also order the other occupants out of the vehicle. If you are unsure about how to handle a job try and ask one of your co-workers with time on the job. Uh, as others have commented, ballasting a roof with gravel is common practice, and even though it's been given the whole "green" label that's typically incidental to its use as ballast.

Given this blog's acerbic attitude toward anyone publicly giving such nonsense "common sense" assessments of police work you'd think you'd stick to what you know best.

Spending millions to use concrete tiling or other coating methods to revamp downtown rooftops is not only impractical but the cost would be drastically more than to replace a handful of windows.

Just give all that to your insurance company and officer friendly. Since your witness was anonymous (I am assuming that because you didn’t say otherwise) don’t expect this to go anywhere. If you witness is known and cooperating then it is remotely possible to site the owner of the vehicle for leaving the scene of an accident. Under the Illinois Vehicle Code the vehicle owner is always liable for violations committed with the vehicle, even if they were not operating it at the time. However that can be problematic to prosecute so don’t be disappointed to if it doesn’t happen. With the cooperating witness your insurance company should be able to sort it out and take whatever civil action might be appropriate.

I’m not sure what your intention is in locating this person. If you did locate them I wouldn’t recommend confronting them, you might earn a few humps on the noggin for your trouble. You’re best bet is to let your insurance company handle it with them and you stay at a safe distance. If they had enough balls to drive away from wrecking your car they probably aren’t the sort of people you’d want to meet socially. Don’t take any personal risks with these shitheads let your insurance company address it; that is why you’ve paid them the big bucks.

Referencing the ADT/Honeywell guy, this is a popular scam right now being done illegally by desperate alarm salesman.

They drive around neighborhoods and look for the alarm signs. They enter the home and they replace your alarm panel with the one they're selling and activate it. They get a quick $300-500 for selling an alarm system.

The homeowner finds out when they receive a bill from the old alarm company and the "new" one the criminal installed.

This has been going on a LOT here in Indianapolis and I'm sure that's what is going on up there. Nothing to be concerned about.

Hey Mr. Bumsted. read the 4th amendment. I bet if you and Blondie were sitting in you car and a police officer, with no probable cause asked you to present ID you would be very upset and ready to sue.

Are they suspicious because they were M/1's??? was there a complainant? What exactly is suspicious about sitting in a car at 6:15 pm? as opposed to standing naked on the hood??? (now that's suspicious) were they waiting for tripleA?

You see Dagwood, there are a lot of variables that a pimple like you don't understand, if you are so quick to judge the Officer's actions why don't you stop listening to the scanner, grab yourself by the nuts (if you have any) and confront the "suspicious M/1's" or just call 911 and not remain anonymous, tell them " this is Mr. Dagwood Bumsted im calling about the M/1's sitting in the car, and if you need a complaint signed I'll be right out"

Stop being a crybaby and stop questioning the actions of police officers who work your neighborhood.. you may need them one day. Now Blondie has a nice sandwich and a glass of milk waiting for you right next to your scanner.

Here's another "going green" incident, direct from City Hall: several years ago the standard urinals in the second floor public men's room were replaced with waterless devices. Mix toxic urine with copper pipes (required by city building code) and what do you have - leaks! It cost more than $150,000 to break out marble walls to replace all the damaged wood and insulation. And, it still stinks.... And the "green" manager who thought this up has left his position to be the city manager of Portland (?)

And yes, I know the 4th amendment and there was lots of cause to question them in this circumstance. By asking me about "grab yourself by the nuts (if you have any) and confront the "suspicious M/1's" you must mean the beat car did not have any nuts either since they did not confront them.

Dear Mr. Bumsted, the beat car "did" confront them, while you were in the comfort of your basement or family room or wherever you safely relax and monitor the police frequency via your scanner. The officer or, I'm sorry the COWARDS you refer to, were out there responding to this run-of-the-mill BULLSHIT call which usually results in nothing.

You see Bumsted, even shitheads have more sense than you, even the M/1's in the car are not stupid enough to sit in a car and wait for the police to approach them if they were "dirty".

I'm assuming since you are so passionate about the way the call was handled, (evident by your many posts) you were the "ANONYMOUS CALLER" talk about being a coward? Jody is that you?

I have some experience in roofing. While Pea Gravel is often used to top coat flat roofs, it is NOT piled up and left on the roof. The gravel is spread out, lightly rolled and the excess is swept or vacuumed off. In cooler weather we used a torch to heat the tar surface up a bit so the gravel would stick.Only a very little excess gravel should be left from a proper job. The City Hall roof has everything but the kitchen sink up there, IIRC they were lifting sh*t up there for 3-4 months, small wonder some of it blew off!
