Dozens of Stores; 12,000 Jobs

  • Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Monday pledged to pay a starting wage of at least $8.75 an hour if the city allows it to build dozens of new stores in Chicago, but influential unions called the amount disappointing.

    The giant retailer's offer — 50 cents above minimum wage but 50 cents below what unions sought as a compromise — comes ahead of a key vote Thursday on a South Side store that would be the second Wal-Mart allowed within city limits.

It's amazing how people, who have probably never run a business in their lives, are attempting to dictate to an internationally successful corporation how to operate their business model.

It's even more amazing how the mayor and city council members are participating in this debacle while demanding 30 and more unpaid "furlough" days, massive lay-offs, hiring freezes and a budget hole that looks like something out of a third world nation while breaking every union and shafting every vendor.

Wal-Mart isn't rocket science. It isn't brain surgery. It's not even a union shop although the buildings would be union built. It's entry-level jobs and the entry-level salary is the Federal minimum wage. Everything else is just extortion on the part of politicians. Wal-Mart should continue with its previous plan of ringing the city with stores, drop a few in the unincorporated surrounding Cook County, and watch the workers from Chicago line up around the block for a shot at the jobs.

Then they could send Daley a photocopy of their sales tax receipts every month and watch his head explode.

Not to mention that anyone working these jobs wouldn't be working a union gig if one were available, so to assume starting pay of $9-10 is ridiculous. Please.

Small retail is already nearly dead in Chicago; might as well finish the job by building hundreds of new Big Barn stores where - sadly -- most young black men will be just as unmanageable and unemployable as they are everywhere else.

**** BEAKING NEWS ****
Since FOP or SCC wouldnt initiate a city wide slow down we the working coppers have done it ourselves. I'm not going to say what district I work in but the truth will get around quick enough. 5 or 6 of our beat cars got together and all agreed that we work 99 alot and its not safe and no one is looking out for us at FOP so we decided to do nothing. AND it worked !! No Sgt. confronted us and no one was the wiser. We all went the entire shift without writing a ticket or making an arrest. We simply rode our jobs and wrote reports for 8 hours. After our shift we all went out for a few pops and decided to do the same the next 2 days and again no one said shit to us. For all of you out there that think you will get yelled at or you may get dumped , wake up, nobody cares anymore. We did this work strike for 4 consecutive days until we had to lock up a guy for domestic battery on the 5th night but then we did it again the next 2 days. If we can do it and not get any slack then all of us can do it and should do it for all of our safety. The more cops we have available on the street, and not tied up with writing tickets or on arrests, no SAFER we all our having a lot more assistn units ready and waiting to help our fellow officers. Be safe and godbless.

That is the problem with this country right now,,,,people who have never run a business of any type are in charge or tell the people who are in charge what to do.

Obama, Pelosi, Reid have never worked in the private sector, even though Pelosi's husband exploits workers by manipulating minimum wage laws in Guam and Samoa in the fishing industries.

We'll never have recovery with BS like this happening. Let WalMart open in the city, instead of them opening across the city limits.

Daley wants it,,,,it is Obamawannabes that are fucking with it.

we pretty much have been doing this every night for about a year just for survival purposes. nobody got together -- its just common sense. 75 percent of the time we have 6 people in roll call to man the 6 beats. 10 percent of the time we have five people and the other 15 percent there are 7 or 8 people in roll call. One time we actually had 4 people in roll call! Think about that for a few minutes. Who in their right mind would ever do any kind of work in these conditions?

Have you gone to the Union meetings? Have you made sure everyone on the Watch is registered to vote? Have you talked to your neighbors and friends and told them about the outright theft of their tax dollars?

......or is not working for your paycheck the only thing you have done about the situation? Don't get me wrong. I agree the lack of manpower is REALLY unsafe.I know this Department is a mess, but not doing anything for your money sounds....like the welfare rats.

Get involved, do more. Help get this cancer, Daley, out of all of our lives.

Chicago’s politicians are its people’s own worst enemy. I’ve been living here two years and it blows my mind how they want to dictate to a company how to run their business. You cannot do that! The damn taxes here already prevent companies from coming here. This city is in dire need of jobs and economic development. But no, let’s tell businesses how to operate and keep a handgun ban – this way, we can keep jobs away and the murder rate and crime high!

While I agree that Daley and his minions have no business getting involved in this situation, I have no desire for Wal-Mart's in this city. Their treatment of employees, women especially should be enough to make anyone not want to shop there. Add in all of the Chinese junk they sell that you will be replacing after it breaks, I can easily take a pass. Wal-Mart is the number one company in America responsible for all of manufacturing jobs disappearing due to their dependency on Chinese products.

It's simple think about it. They dont want anyone to have a job unless they somehow get a kickback or can staff all the positions with thier friends. A legit business is uncomprehendable to city government. Maybe they want to put Pat, Tom, or Louis as the store manager. BTW union, for what?

6/22/2010 08:38:00 AM

I'm not a big Wal-Mart supporter but who is the city to tell them what to pay thier employees? They don't tell any other company what they should pay their people. You either tell everyone or nobody. How about all these people working at these fast food places?

So unions are good for the police, but not for retail workers?

BTW, "dozens of stores"? Come on, Wal-Mart's full of it.
This is all about economic exploitation. And who is going to do it. The aldermen have been promised lots o' USC for pushing this, it ain't about jobs for their peeps.

It's about staying with the cause, not staying with a label.

The alderfools are worried about union backlash? What union employees are left in the city other than city, county, and state employees?

Jobs are jobs, tax revenue is tax revenue. I think the residents that actually want to work is a larger voting block than the union-hack block.

The mobbed up unions are doing nothing for the unemployed union card holders. Their response, there are no jobs out there everyone is hurting.

If Walmart is blocked again, I hope they open stores in every adjacent suburb of chitroit, within blocks of the border. I would like to see a store in Whiting Indiana, I'll spend my tax dollars there.

You just may get what you want (to the further demise of the East Side)

That prairie between Amaizo/Cargill & the BP station next to the toll road.....that's what all those test wells & recovery barrels are for.....

Unfortunately that will just drag the shit from the ghetto into the few good blocks left in the neighborhood.

Just jump on the toll road & head out to Merrillville....30 minutes..no food tax...less sales tax on non-food items...cheaper gas & cigarettes...

Walmart should also just build right over the borders, and thumb their nose at the city.

I really don't get why people believe they deserve a "livable wage" for doing jobs that require zero skill. It used to be that kids(teens) worked these jobs for minimum wage. Now you have 25-60yr olds working at Burger King demanding $15 per hour along with insurance and a 401K. Maybe you should have stayed in school, maybe you shouldn't have had 7 kids, maybe you shouldn't have gotten a felony record. I'm sorry, but most of these jobs are not something you do for a living...at least not a good one.

No, intellectual genius, Wright does not teach zoning in business class, nor does Booth in B-school. No. No. No.

17-13-0308 Review and Decision-Making Criteria. The act of amending the zoning map is a legislative action that must be made in the best interests of the public health, safety and general welfare, while also recognizing the rights of individual property owners. In reviewing and making decisions on proposed zoning map amendments, review bodies and decision- making bodies should consider at least the following factors:

17-13-0308-A whether the proposed rezoning is consistent with any plans for the area that have been adopted by the Plan Commission or approved by the City Council;

17-13-0308-B whether the proposed rezoning is appropriate because of significant changes in the character of the area due to public facility capacity, other rezonings, or growth and development trends;

17-13-0308-C whether the proposed development is compatible with the character of the surrounding area in terms of uses, density and building scale;

17-13-0308-D whether the proposed zoning classification is compatible with surrounding zoning; and

17-13-0308-E whether public infrastructure facilities and city services will be adequate to serve the proposed development at the time of occupancy.

When are they (politicians and other dopes) going to realize that minimum wage was NOT MEANT to raise a family, it's not meant for a career. Minimum wage is meant to be a stepping stone for the younger and un-skilled worker and part-timer who is still heading towards higher education. Older people in these jobs should be subsidizing their family income or retirees for additional cash. You can't raise a family on minimum wages and no company should be forced to raise these wages to please the crooks in politics. If you raise the wages, then the goods will have to go up and then everyone has to take the bite because of those who think they should get CEO pay for working a register at Big Lots, Kohls or Walmart.

Make the minimum wage when you are young and just learning how to get along in the work force, getting the experience and then MOVE ON.
Behave, stay in school and get educated and you won't be working at Walmart for minimum wage making that position your life career.

The problem with letting Walmart into the city is that they will under-cut Jewel and Dominick's stores frocing them out of business. When Walmart gains the monopoly, they'll go back to screwing everyone like they have for years. Jewel is the 4th largest employer in the city, and they pay a decent wage with benefits, profit-sharing etc. A person could live and retire on a Jewel pension. Walmart would take this all away.
