Splitting Hairs

  • Chicago may severely limit the number of handguns that can be kept in a single home and ban gun dealers within city limits in the wake of Monday's landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that gutted the city’s handgun ban, City Hall’s top attorney said today.

The court's ruling “did not say that a person is entitled to more than one handgun, and one handgun is sufficient for self defense,” Corporation Counsel Mara Georges told aldermen at a City Council committee meeting. “We believe that a limitation on the number of handguns to one per person per residence would be consistent with the Supreme Court’s decisions.”
We believe this has been tried and failed before. Government doesn't get to tell people how many cars to own, how many houses to own, how many phones, radios, computers, etc. If we want to own half a dozen handguns, that's our business, not theirs.

We can't wait to see the procedural roadblocks Shortshanks starts to throw up. The Department can't even run rifle and striker-fire transitions courses for officers. If he tries to task the Department with "qualifying" new gun owners, we expect waiting lists to be years long.

I'll limit myself to one firearm when the Chicago Police Department limits meritorious promotions to the same number.

Even one bite at the merit apple is one too many for the lion's share of the nincompoops that hold any title above Patrolman on this job.

What is the big deal with the mayor and guns? Is it really the beginning of communism that Daley is starting? Or is it a personal thing? I don't get it. I've lived with guns my whole life. I shot at a target at 9 years old. I've shot at moving targets when I was a teen and have become proficient. I respect guns.I am proud to be an American who has a right to bear arms. I have never robbed anyone, nor plan to do so. I do not want to murder anyone, nor would abuse the right to have a gun to do so.
What is the mayor's problem?

I think every working person in the household should be entitled to have a weapon. After all the city and county want you to count all income of every working person in your household in order to ascertain if you qualify for a tax break (regardless of whether they contribute to your mortgage). Let's make it even steven across the board.

So will Daley be paying for the lawsuits when the city fails to qualify citizens fast enough? I have practiced quite a bit with my various guns and don't need to be qualified. Not to mention that I don't feel I should have to pay to exercise my rights. If the city can't afford ammo for cops, do they have ammo for the thousands of citizens who will be purchasing firearms?

Let me carry my damned Glock 26 and I will be fine.

And while you are at it, hire some officers. The city is shorthanded and I am amongst many who await another test.

God Bless the CPD and nobody else.

City gon' do this, city gon' do that.

Are you getting the feeling that no one is listening anymore?

People are going to arm themselves, the same way they always have -- and like SCC noted, most of the time, when dealing with decent folk, the police don't even know the guns are there.

If some heroin addict (we're tops in the U.S., you know) climbs into the bedroom window in the middle of the night he's gonna get blasted before he gets anywhere near the kids sleeping down the hall.

Maybe if citizens take a page from the street thugs and learn to keep their mouths shut and quickly stuff the body into an abandoned car and light the whole thing off, we'll be in even better shape.

What's the homicide clearance rate here now -- 27% or something? Maybe we can get it lower than that and save even more time and money.

Remember -- use of even an unregistered weapon in an act of self-defense is an affirmative defense against city ordinances. It's the law.

Also remember -- you can purchase and register (if you can keep up with the paperwork) an even more lethal rifle or shotgun, too. Always could. So Ja'mal there gets blown across the room like a rag doll by one thunderous center-mass shot from an old .30-'06 and is dead before he hits the floor.

Dead be dead. Who cares what Mara Georges thinks?

I went to an NRA basis pistol course with my teenage son last weekend in Freeport, IL. Fifteen students attended but there was room for forty. We had four hours of classroom and four hours of range. We took a written test and received certificates of completion. The class was a refresher for me and safely introduced my son to revolvers and pistols. I have not read the city's proposed ordinance but I think this course should be a consideration.

The one gun per person to avoid straw purchasers is a joke. The city is just opening itself up to future court challenges. Straw purchasers will still buy guns out of state to get around chicago ordinances. If the gun is registered in Chicago eventually it will be recovered if used in a crime. Write an ordinance that included large monetary damages if found to be a straw purchaser and enforce it.

More bullshit from the mayor who can't run city hiring without getting the city sued (spending OUR tax money) numerous times and having people indicted and thrown in prison and who can't remember who appointed the guy to run the hired truck program.

So now he spends city tax money on more suits because you know this will be challenged and any ordinance will be a paper tiger anyway.

Who is going to enforce the ordinance? Us? hah! Any future handgun law won't be any more effective than the present one. So legislate away. Citizens will laugh at silly handgun limiting ordinances.

Who will be responsible for training the 10% estimated to purchase handguns? And that is a very conservative estimate by the city. The NRA? A private range? A newly formed company contracted by the city? Or the critically short CPD? The new mandates will put such a demand on the CPD that officers on the street will never receive yearly training. No one in the press ever addressed who will provide the 5 hours of training? Who will register the new weapons and test them? Sounds like a huge windfall for new consultants and non-bid contracts for those connected to city hall.

Chicago's gun control ordinances, including the new ones that will come out soon, do not fight violent crime and will not protect so-called first responders. Even with a handgun ban and a hostile environment for the possession by good guys of long guns, violent crime in Chicago is among the highest in the nation. Chicago's alderpersons are about to pass another ordinance infringing on the rights of the good guys, an ordinance that will not prevent the bad guys from carry arms while cruising the hood. Of course, the attorneys for the City will be paid big money for defending the indefensible.

Shortshanks will be litigated if he goes overboard with the restrictions. Guns are like flashlights, first aid kits or any other emergency device. You need a spare in case the first one fails. Two is one and one is none. I do agree with some kind of training requirments, when the average person gets a gun in hand the first thing they do is point the thing in an unsafe direction. You see this alot in gun shops. Muzzle and trigger guard discipline needs to be pounded into peoples heads before they lay hands on a weapon.

6/30/2010 07:14:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let the good times roll!

Did you really think that Shortshanks would just admit defeat and leave it at that? He'll just bankroll this into another money making scam for friends and family.

Does anyone remember which aldercreatures pushed for private security to work the strip malls in their wards? These guys are armed. Who trained them? Did they get trained through their respective companies? If so, how many of these aldercreatures, family, and friends have financial interest in them?

Who is to say they didn't see this coming? Faced with the real possibility of SCOTUS overturning the 30 year handgun ban, you stop hiring police because they say the city can't afford to hire. You then complain that your ward is not getting the police service that you, as aldercreature, say it is entitled to. You then push for private security to work your ward, say starting in commercial property like strip malls.

Now the day has come that your beloved hand gun ban is found unconstitutional by the highest court in the land so now as a result you start to put together a myriad of rules and regulations that will essentially make it impossible a law abiding citizen to legally own and store a hand gun in their private residence.

One of those rules is that each citizen must have a specific amount of training before they can have their gun. But who will do the training? CPD? I doubt it. We can't even get time on our own ranges to practice let alone teach private citizens how to handle a gun.

Here is where the private security firms step in. They will "offer" the use of the same ranges they use to train their employees. Daley and the 50 thieves will jump at that idea, especially if the price is right.

So now you have another avenue of income for Daley and the 50 thieves to exploit.

Here's hoping that some up and coming journalist will keep a watchful eye on this. It would make for some good reading.

If they want citizens to take a gun safety course and qualify with it at the range to familiarize themselves with their gun of choice all they have to do is allow them to go to a reputable firearms course anywhere in the state, pay a minimal fee, get a certificate and that's it. This way they're no waiting on some stupid list. You register your gun, pay the fee and go home.

SO when a homeowner shoots a guy doing a home invasion the mayor will take away his one and only gun leaving him defenseless again, or will they lend him one like they do with us when they take our gun away after a shooting? This is nonsense. Guns are legal products just like any other legal product. Once again he tries to take rights away from the law abiding while doing nothing to the criminal. Seriously, do you think the criminal will only have one gun because the mayor says so? I bet he'll but the insurance too. Now where's that deed to my bridge I have for sale?

I am now convinced that the Mayor is nuts. One handgun per eligible person, per home?

What's next, he's going to tell coppers that they can only have one duty related weapon? I've amassed 5 duty related ones over the past 25 years as times have changed.

All this is going to do is make lawyers (on both sides) rich. The city will end out farming this out and the ISRA, NRA, etc. will be paying their own lawyers. My dues and tax money has better uses.

Who will run these safety classes? The range guys? A private company? The gun stores?

Who will shoot and then collect the rounds and casings for forensic inventories?

My neighbor was asking about buying a handgun, I told him to wait. I can just see the area gun teams just chomping at the bit to get sales records for city residents.

6/30/2010 09:55:00 AM

All this will do is make some lawyers richer.

The city will farm this out making some connected LaSalle Street firm's partners richer.

The NRA, ISRA and other assorted plantiffs will make their lawyers richer.

This is a game to take more money from taxpayers and dues-payers.

One handgun per eligible person? Does that mean that the five duty related weapons I've bought over the last 25 years are going to be illegal?

Can you imagine citizens coming to local area ranges (if they are open) to qualify? Who is going to collect the slugs and casings for future forensic testing?

The Mayor is really losing it. All he needed to do the other day was begin to start crying for the cameras.

Why won't they just give up?

So given this, I would like to propose a new Mayoral and Aldermanic Protection Act.

Under this law guns will not be allowed within 100 feet of these individuals. Cancel their protective details. Before one of those officers guns jumps up out of its holster and harms someone.

The Mayor and our Aldermen are the cities most precious resource. We can't simply shouldn't take the risk, as explained by our mayor, of have firearms in their presence.

It is strange, all the facts give lie to his position, shootings, number of illegal guns, crime stats where concealed carry becomes law and on and on ad infinitum. It just doesn't make sense and gives some indication of just how maniacally stubborn he is. If they try to limit numbers or make registration onerous, I am pretty sure he will lose the fight. The problem is, I suspect he realizes that and simply wants to throw roadblocks up, in order to inconvenience his citizens. It makes no sense. I am pretty sure that limiting numbers or charging ridiculous fees would amount to "infringing," thank God.

You want to pass some new laws and ordinances. Try these:

1) Anyone receiving state/fed entitlements - LINK, medicaid, social security disability, etc. MUST take a urine test to qualify for payments. Just like a job.

Test positive and you fail to get the entitlement. Random tests every quarter with each recipient test a minimum of once a year. Fail once, banned for life.

2) Not a citizen, no entitlements.

3) ANY fraudulent use of LINK cards - whether buyer or seller (store owner) - immediate ban from program for life.

4) Anyone without car insurance. Confiscation of car. Revocation of license. End of story.

Too strict? These are all privileges, NOT RIGHTS granted by taxpayers who have to pay for them - NOT POLITICIANS who hand them out like candy for votes.

Wow, I couldn't read all the comments, so I may be repeating everyone.

First, why not limit Daley to 1 bodyguard. Actually, how about he gets the same number of body guards as everyone else, 0.

Second, they think the constitution doesn't say people can have more than one gun. ARMS. Daley must have gone to a CPS because the "S" at the end of arm makes it plural.

Daley is determined to bankrupt the taxpaying citizens and blame it on the "gun industry" and "gun lobby" when it's his own contempt for freedom that's bankrupting his subjects.

Another poster posed the question, "What is the big deal with
Daley and guns?" I don't think anyone has the answer to that, except maybe him.

6/30/2010 12:09:00 PM

THE BIG DEAL IS: Daley has been blaming inatimate objects-guns for decades, instead of admitting his own ineptitude in significantly lowering violent crime in his city. If there were no guns, he would find something else to blame, anything except his own incompetence. If the crime rate does drop significantky in the City, due to the tossing of Comrade Daley's draconian, unconstitutional gun ordinances, [aka Daley Cash Cow] he Daley will take credit for it and say it is due to one of his Bullshit programs. Everyone, except Daley, views him to be an imbicile, who thinks he is smarter than the common everyday taxpayer, but Daley is, of course, wrong again, as usual. People see thru his bullshit and incompetence. Go ahead and run again Daley, you are bound to lose this time around, and the only one who doesn't realize this is you and your criminal cabal of yes men lackeys..

Daley and his crime family would hate to be confronted by any armed citizens fed up with their thievery. That is the reason he is against guns. Criminal don't care about rules/laws and daley knows this. This is why all ordiances created since dick has been in office affects the law abiding citizen only. Criminal respect other criminal at the top of their game, so they are the one's who will vote for lil dick next election. Politians, Judges and ASA's are all apart of what's wrong with the system.
>Politicians fail to create common sense laws.
>Judges fail to sentence repeat offenders. Only 1st time misdemeanor are sentenced fully.
>ASA's fail to prosecute without a full confession. They only persue cases involving police and 1st time offenders.

Why is Daley against law abiding citizens owning guns? I think I may have the answer.

It all began back in 1983 when he saw the movie A Christmas Story. Having lived through a particularly difficult childhood himself, Daley could relate to the main theme of the movie which was little Ralphie Parker trying to convince his parents to get him the Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.

However, unlike the movie, where little Ralphie gets his wish, little Richie never did. And he has carried that trauma with him all his life.

Now as Mayor, he wishes to get his revenge. So, as Ralphie's parents told him, so Richie tells all of us: YOU DON'T WANT A HAND GUN. YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT!

It is a bullshit municipal code violation (NON JAILABLE) punishable by gun confiscation if the police talk you into giving them your gun. OTHERWISE CASE DISMISSED, IT WAS NEVER ENFORCEABLE!!!They can't arrest you if you have a valid FOID card! 311. Militia: composition and classes
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

Y'all are probably already in the militia, genius.

"...how would you gun advocates take to people forming a militia?"

Uh, that's pretty much what the militia was, when the Bill of Rights was drawn up; able-bodied citizens, armed with personally-owned firearms.

There is even an argument here for "assualt weapons", in that these citizens would be armed with the same weapons that the British military used.

No, I wasn't around then and no, I cannot get inside the heads of Adams and Jefferson, but all one needs to do is read what they wrote at the time. The message is quite clear.

The people were armed CITIZENS, not SUBJECTS, such as those under the crown.

Firearms were not only a tool to provide food and protection against thievery, but were allowed to be held by the private citizen to provide defense against TYRANTS, should that beceome necessary.

DALEY IS A TYRANT.

Shortshanks, stop wasting our tax dollars!

Any exorbitant fees or insurance requirement will be challenged and beaten! This has been declared a right... Again!!! and upheld! You cannot tax or make unreasonable measures to keep someone's right from them.

Look at it this way. Do we require journalists to take a class or have insurance for what they write? Must I have insurance when I march with 3000 other coppers on City Hall? While I peaceably assemble? Do I need a license for that? No. Maybe before I purchase a six pack, I should have insurance because prohibition was repealed you know?
Should slaves pay a tax to earn their freedom? Perhaps I should take a voters safety class before I vote?

Hold on- I'll go for that one, cause this "Change" thing these idiots voted for is not the Change I was looking for. Now I'm looking for "Spare Change."

Notice these are all referenced to certain amendments of our Constitution? We swore to uphold it, some of us more than once!

Freedom is a wonderful thing many of us have fought for. Many gave their lives so we could have it! What good is it if we don't control it? If we are governed, and not governed FOR? Whose rules do we live by? I can think of 51 idiots who are governing us. Shouldn't they be polling us to learn what we think?

Will I need to pay any more fees to the State Police to allow me to have a right? No--- that will be challenged too.

Thomas Jefferson was a very wise man. More wise that Shortshanks could ever dream of being. He wanted a country that wasn't controlled by Tyrants or Despots.
He knew that a government who controlled the people wasn't freedom. He knew that when people controlled their government, that- was power. That- is freedom.

What the public does in their own homes or private property should be no concern of "the government." When is a (wo)man truly free?

Please, everyone reading this, ask yourself, when am I truly free?

If I own my property outright, to whom or why do I owe a tax on my property? Is it not mine? Perhaps I should pay myself?

Everyone, we need to VOTE! The power is ours when our elected officials do what we tell them. Instead of what they think we want. Or in some cases, what THEY want!

Freedom is this blog! Thanks SCC, for giving us this space to express our freedom! Maybe 'Shanks would ask you to register your blog next!

Sorry for the long rant.

Two Tampa police officers shot, killed during traffic stop

By Times Staff Writers
Posted: Jun 29, 2010 04:06 AM

TAMPA — Two Tampa police officers were shot to death Tuesday during a traffic stop, touching off a massive manhunt that led to the capture of one of two people wanted in connection with the killings.

Hours after the deadly encounter, the wife of one of the slain officers went into labor with the couple's first child.

Officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis, both 31, were shot to death at 50th Street and 23rd Avenue at about 2:20 a.m., police said. Both were shot in the head, Mayor Pam Iorio said.

As the city reeled from the second fatal police shooting in less than a year, an intense search led to an apartment complex where the car used in the shootings was found a few miles away. The driver was holed up in an apartment in the same complex.

The shooting suspect, a passenger in the car, was identified as Dontae Rashawn Morris, 24, an ex-convict with a lengthy arrest record and no known address, police said. He ran away, witnesses said, and by early afternoon was still at large.

Police issued an arrest warrant for Morris on two counts of first-degree murder charges and felony possession of a firearm.

The driver of the car was identified as Cortnee Nicole Brantley, 22. Police said a tip led them to the Bristol Bay Apartments, 4821 Bristol Bay Way, where they went door to door before finding Brantley in apartment 202.

"If you shoot two police officers in cold blood you've got to be considered very dangerous,'' Castor said. "It's our goal to get them off of the streets. … It would be in their best interest to call and turn themselves in.''
---

Stay safe out there, be very careful. Condolences and prayers to our brothers & sisters in Tampa.

If Shorty gets his way on the "one handgun" rule, some people will go all out and spend big $$$ on high end pieces such as HK, Sig Sauer, or maybe even hand made 1911s such as the Les Baer, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, Wilson Combat, etc, etc. I would imagine he will try the Washington,DC style 10 round magazine limit as well. Most .45s hold 7-8 rounds so this is a non-issue. Im an old fart, Im sticking with the Revolver.

A poster warned everyone that photo radar goes into effect and will cause a ticket for $375 for one mile over the limit. Then anon stated that this is complete and utter bullshit. Well, my friends, it is true and can be verfied if you go on Snopes. The law covers construction zones and goes into effect 1 July in the state of Illinois. The second ticket is for $1000.Just another way to get you money. They do not need a photo of the driver, just a photo of the license plate. The fine goes to the registered owner.

The fucking ASA's in this county don't even prosecute gang members caught with hand guns now half the time. You think they will prosecute a citizen who has never been arrested and has more than one handgun?? Give me a break.

Get a clue. This is a silly City Ordinance. ASAs don't prosecute city ordinance violations. They prosecute violations of state criminal law that are properly investigated and supported by actual, properly recovered evidence.
