This Sounds Interesting

Shortshanks isn't just looking to privatize hiring - what could this be about?
  • There is also a plan to privatize part of what the fire department is doing, its all very hush-hush, but its moving forward
Any idea what this might be? We're pretty sure we can rule out actual fire fighting. Ambulance service? Probably not. Building inspections? Probably getting warmer in this area.

Any smoke-eaters want to chime in?

Don't forget he also wants to lease the bridges. You'll soon be paying tolls to the bridge trolls.

I read an article in the NY Times (I know, I know) that says the ruling by SCOTUS about "honest services" will bring back patronage hiring in Chicago. The law was used to bust Sorich and now it's been shot down. I posted the article on my site. The midget seems to have some schemes in store for us normal sized people.

There's a rumor that they're looking into privatizing the OEMC too. Might not happen. But I don't doubt they're looking at it.

Well considering they do very little in the way of actual firefighting, it's an idea long overdue. 95% of the fire companies runs are to assist paramedics. That's a statistical fact. Put the CFD on 12 hour shifts & make every cinderhead a qualified paramedic. The city will save millions. FACT.

they are thinking of making a few of the old firehouses that were closed into voulenteer fire houses. I heard its only going to be two or three houses around the city but who knows what else they have going.

"Privateization" is the daley way of bringing back patronage under another name and away from federal scrutiny.

That you can bet your mortgage money on. If it didn't directly benefit daley and assist in solidifying his continued grip of power he wouldn't do it.

Daley is the Stalin of our time. He is the evil one, the devil in the flesh, the anti-christ. A pox upon his house.

Same idiotic statements about firefighters.
First off, the city will never change the schedule because it saves them money. Any talk of that change is simply the city blowing smoke. If the city could do it for cheaper, they would have a long time ago.
Secondly, I agree they should all become paramedics. Unfortunately, that would make it difficult for a certain group to get or maintain the job. Won't happen!

Rumor that I have heard is that the city was looking into contracting out some of its 911 EMS calls. But the insurance policies the city and private ambo companies would have to buy would be to expensive.

Some truth to this, he wants more front line people on the streets. Like CPD, we have our "house mouses". Ambulance service won't be privatized as it's a money maker. Air mask service on Orleans is almost all civilians, District secretaries (Assisit the District Chiefs and drive for the Deputy District Chief) could easily be civilian-ized. 10 W. 35th st is full of "House mouses" who are lucky to have 5 years on the street. Could very well be true as it's contract time...

Fire inspections.
Ambulance service.
Airport firefighting.
Support/air mask service.
Leasing of fire trucks/cars etc.
Truck repair from fleet to private companies.
Training division.
Fire part of OEMC to private company

All these project are being talkout, and the mayor and aldermen have freinds to do all these things right now.
Some retired fore bosses are involved too

How about a double whammy!! A)Police/Fire Fighters like Rosemont...Hmmmm..Not far fetched at all in fact that would cancell out tons of "ride with fire" type calls and I honestly believe B)the reason this goofy city has let PD's department numbers go so low is so that they can see just how many cars they can function with/without. All they have to do is hire a bunch of "report writers" for the minor non violent BS pay them a lot less $$ and have a small force of what would be rapid response cars for the hot in progress stuff.

And Just who will investigate the crime of Arson in this city? With B&A gutted, and CFD OFI gutted it seems to me that arsonists have a free reign in this city. And now perhaps a private company will investigate arson? Who is that gonna be? Walsh investigations? Or perhaps the mayors son can start up another "Legit" company. You gotta be kidding me...Am I the only one who sees this?

There has been talk of making the Fire Prevention part of the department away and make it either citizen run or a private company do it. And it might be a good idea. Why pay people FF pay to do it when you can have a lay person do it at half the pay. Besides the FPB is only full of duckers & women that want the pay but have never been to a fire in their life.

I don't think that they will ever be able to get a private company to do the EMS part of the job. I know as recently as 2 yrs ago, only 45% of bills were being paid for services rendered. So what company would want to transport patients and only get 45% of the bills paid for their services?

As far as changing the schedule the Tri-Data report yrs ago told them that it would be to costly to change the schedule due to O.T. Plus work hours would have to be negotiated thru contract talks. It can't just be implimented.

exactly , put firefighters on 12 hour shifts and most firefighters over 50 will retire

this will reduce the number of firefighters , city can then hire cross trained paramedic / firefighters and finally close some firehouses

First of all you are wrong SCC saying "Smoke Eaters!" No such thing anymore, you should have said ambulance assist people because thats all firemen do nowadays!

for 11:49
More than 50 surrounding towns have privatised ambulance service.
The municipality makes up what is not paid, but its a lot cheaper than paying for the fire dept to do it.
These companies provide the crew and the vehicle.
There are also private fire departments in this state

------------------------------

You MUST live in the suburbs. FACT, you are an uninformed idiot. The city saves hundreds of millions of dollars with the current schedule. Firemen don't complain that they work more hours than every other city worker because the schedule is nice. The only reason to change the schedule would be to hurt firemen, FDNY's operational and overtime costs went through the roof when they switched the schedule. We work at the firehouse 2112 hours a year, we get NO paid vacations. Our furloughs are time due, many firemen don't realize that. 40 hour work weeks work 2080 hours BEFORE vacation time, personal days, holidays, etc. They would have to hire, promote and pay overtime to hundreds of new firemen. FACT. 95% of our runs are not to assist the paramedics, at least on the west side where I'm at. Maybe in the suburbs, but definitely not on the west side. Probably a 50-50 split, and most of the EMS calls could be taken care of by a taxi cab, but the city makes money from medicare and insurance companies for every ambulance run. We get a lot of garbage cans and rubbish fires which could escalate VERY quickly if our firehouses weren't 8 blocks away from each other. We get a ton of garage fires already. Abandoned building fires are up. Look at the stats, working fires are up from 6 years ago. We had 22 runs the other day, half fire runs, half EMS. Plus it would cost millions to either make or hire cross-trained paramedics. The continuing education costs are already in the millions as it is for our paramedics. There was a private report done 10 years ago analyzing the fire dept, and any hour change would be cost prohibitive. Any more comments based on FACT?

Yep, you may have a great schedule, but you can have that running into burning buildings shit. Did it exactly ONCE a few years ago, and all I could think is "If this burning shit hits this stupid nylon jacket, it's gonna melt to my skin". I took it off, washed it, and have never worn it again. Go ahead, enjoy your day away from the kids/wife/husband/whatever, be safe, and thanks for coming when I was injured.
