$98 Million Bond Issue
Mayor Daley on Wednesday proposed a $98 million city subsidy to make way for “a new city” on the site of the old U.S. Steel South Works plant — and earned a surprise political endorsement in the process.
Ald. Sandi Jackson (7th), wife of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), said she ran for aldermen in 2007 with the $397 million development project as “the marquee behind me.”
"City subsidy"? The city has $98 million lying around? A $700 million hole in the budget and Shortshanks pulls almost $100 million out of some hidden TIF fund and buys a Jackson endorsement?

Assuming no hang-ups? That's a hell of an assumption for a site that was pretty much a devil's cauldron of industrial metal fabricating for decades. We're going to lay money it doubles in price before they get halfway through. Check back here in two years.

That area is all fenced off with the longest continuous fence in the city, maybe even the state. Why would such a long stretch of fence be needed around lakefront property other than major environmental contamination. 98 million projected means it will cost at least 3X as much just to complete phase one. DON'T YOU BELIEVE HIM!!!
Environmental clean-up hang-ups ? Have no fear, that can be handled the Daley way and the inspectors will just look the other way. Heck, it will be decades before all those suckers who bought homes there start dropping from exotic cancers and their children are born horribly deformed and then you can always blame it all on contractors. When the shit hits the fan they’ll make a lot of noise and maybe pass a useless law that will never be enforced to demonstrate their profound concern and in the mean time live high on the hog from the construction company bribes and kick backs.

The city of Chicago has several sites that are so polluted they would be Super Fund sites anywhere else but the city has continually fought the classification Super Fund cleanup spots because of the bad publicity associated with such sites, hence, none in Chicago.
Also no federal cleanup dollars and no cleanup. Daley is concerned with property values. More so than with pollution and the diseases it causes or the slow leeching of the crud into our drinking water supply.
Double in price? Try quadruple in price, SCC. Think the S-T will point this out in a follow=up article about how much cash on hand Chitcago has? No, I don't think so either.
What a great chance for the Mayor's friends to make some money.

I'll take that bet SCC. It's a sure thing. Hell, all you have to do is look at the final cost of Millennium Park. It had an initial budget cost of $150 million. After all the dust settled it's final cost was $475 million. And this was for a park build on what used to be old an old railroad yard.

Gotta keep, the Walsh, Reyes etal. busy. A site like this is perfect for the type of bidding connected companies like. They can low bid, get the job and poof all sorts of unforseen enviornmental hazards are found, justifying all sorts of extra payments and renegotiations.

Roti is big enough to block 3 backs at 1 time! 2 commanders making 170K+ cars and drivers for a 25 man detail,yet a district commander has as many as 300 under 1 command!
I rode threw the area yesterday while on bicycle patrol.
It’s actually pretty nice, very few remnants of the old steel mill exist.
Just a lot of prime lake front property, with a back drop of the ghetto.
Oh, and get this there are bee hives on site to pollinate the native vegetation!

I guess if this were a legitimate undertaking, we would expect it to cost around $60 million. The rest is just the Outfit tax that gets added to the cost of doing business in the Crime Capitol of America.

Daley hasn't had a "hang up" since he was born.
That site was originally suppose to be a new "Solo Cup Factory" but they backed out years ago when they merged with "Sweetheart Cup" and found out that business was declining and they did not need another plant.
In fact, Solo closed several plants in Illinois and around the country.
Then the land was destined to be new affordable housing, but developers could not get cash backing to start the project.
So it sits empty with new streets, sidewalks, lighting, sewers and fire hydrants and nobody foolish enough to drop any dough on a site that nobody wants to live at or buy at (at least not white people).
It also was suppose to be part of an Extension of Lake Shore Drive South (U.S. Highway 41 project) but that's not happening either!

Yeah, right. This nightmare is designed to go on for FIFTY YEARS. It's Daley's revenge for not getting the Olympics, and will probably cost ten times, one hundred times as much.
