No Big Deal

  • Thor Soderberg was a Chicago Police officer who was just finishing his day of doing his job in the afternoon of July 7th. He got jumped and shot just outside a police facility on the Southside of Chicago by a man who some now say is mentally unstable. They struggled. The man grabbed his gun, shot him in the head and ran away. (Later, he got shot and was captured by police. He turns out to have a lengthy criminal record.)

Many in society have become numb when it comes to a tragedy like this involving a police officer and there are huge consequences when that happens. I guess it’s “no big thing anymore” to many people and it’s just taken with a shrug of the shoulders as the person is more concerned about “more pressing issues” like, “What team did Lebron James choose?”
The column is even more disturbing seeing as how it was written on 13 July, mere days before a second Chicago Police Office lost his life.

So much time has been spent demonizing the police, it isn't all that surprising we barely rate a full week of coverage when we're murdered on the streets.

In the light of the recent killing of officers in front of THEIR OWN DAMN HOMES how about the FOP file a f*cking lawsuit that would recind this archaic residency law.

Is there a way we could do it without the FOP since they obviously don't care about it?
I will gladly be the name on the cover of the lawsuit if we need one. A lawyer out there in the crowd willing to take this to court for the betterment of the CPD?

Heard on the news that Da Daley is going to hire 100 more officers. Its like putting a bandaid on a servered limb. He has mismanged this city so poorly that more blood shed will follow because crime in Chicago is out of control. Everyday several officers go on the medical due to the acts of the job. So as they go down more of a burden falls on those who are now fewer in number and this just keeps repeating it self. The number of officers just keeps getting smaller while crime grows like a California wildfire. Things look bleak!!

The fact that idiots who play will balls are societies heros and not the police, soldiers, or even firemen. Police and Soldiers face men with evil intent but what's evil in a pc world? For the liberals in office all manners of wrong doing are simply an alternative choice now so those who face evil are the oppressors not the heros. Even the firemen who fight against the consequences of nature gone bad are of no concern till ur house is aflame but a punk with a ball in his hands is to be admired, followed, and given time worring about his actions to be praised at a point scored.
The ball player front page and the rest maybe page 12!

NO BIG DEAL

This is the saddest part now of being the police. When I was growing up my dad once pointed to the TV and said...that guys a police killer...it was considered the lowest of lows!!!!

People dont care anymore!

Jodi Weis has killed this department!!!More than anyone else!!!
I knew he was in over his head but didnt think in such a short period of time he could do this much damage!!!!!!!!!

What is the percentage of officers killed since he got control!!!

Shootings since he got control!!!

Im not a Cozzi fan but Cozzi should have gotten 15-30 days suspension and been back on the streets!!!That would have been somewhat fair of a punishment!!!

But he got more time than your average thug who shoots someone!!!!!!

FOR trying to keep a piece of SHIT in line at a hospital!!!

NICE MESSAGE JODI

YOU TOOK AWAY ALL MORALE!!!!
WITH ALL YOUR FUCK THE POLICE ATTITUDE...NOBODY TRUSTS YOU

ITS TIME FOR YOU TO GO
WE NEED A LEADER WHO WILL BACK US

NOT FUCK US!!!!!!!!!!

Monday night in 015, while handling a disturbance, just a few hundred people with a DJ who were having a party and keeping up the entire neighborhood, the dejected partiers slashed tires on three squad cars. Lots of help had to be called in, but before we could clear the scene, several residents were heard saying we gonna kill some police like on the southside. Things have never ever been worse. Jody and fools go away. Take Daley with you.

The local news stations are emphasizing that the mayor is hiring one hundred new officers. While it is welcome and long over due. It isn't a dent, not even a tiny dent to replace the thousand or so police that the city is short. We need one hundred a month starting for the next two years at the very least.

The baseball strike did it for me. I have not given a damn about professional sports since then. Society is truly out of whack. Slobbering over movie stars and singers that exemplify bad behavior. I wouldn't want one of these goofs for a neighbor, why would I demean myself asking for an autograph?

I don't get it. Give me a real decent person caring for their family or neighborhood, there is someone I want to talk to, not the self involved narcissist.

Just so you know, there are a lot of us "civilians" who do care and are outraged. I am one of them. You just may not hear from us as much because we are not in the public eye. I have much respect for police and the job you do and I am disgusted by the lack of support you get from the press and our elected officials in this city.
Yesterday I wrote to the Tribune and various city/state reps demanding they take action to protect you and the rest of the law abiding citizens in the City of Chicago. Not sure it will help but it certainly made me feel better.

Here's a thought.

Societal norms are always changing but recently they've skewed really far towards the "me" end of the spectrum, propelled at lightening speed by the self-indulgent sea that is internet powered media.

Cop shot? No shit they people don't care. It's all about me.

People's lives are ruled by their own self-interest, as seen by people glued to their digital media deceives, capturing every sight and sound that they see in the physical world and transferring it to their cyber reality for all friends and family to see.

Maybe this surge of constant connection to the internet and constant self-absorption has something to do with our increasing apathy to real world crime and violence...

Out of site, out of mind.

Hey clown, I assume you have less than 7 years on this job!! It is NOT the FOP that has to change the law or file a law suit. The ILLINOIS Legislature MUST change the law for municipalities over 1 million in polulation> Why do you think it was done all those years ago. It was designed for Chicago Police officers-dumb ass. lets not kid one another you wont even publish your name here but you want it on a law suit, yea right.

What did not surprise me, but sickened me ( even though I am retired), are the number of comments by people who did not think that any of the off-duty murdered police officers should be considered in the line of duty, but just robbery victim. And, the comments of the asswipes who stated that if the off duty officers were not armed they would not have been shot. It was their fault. Things have really gone down hill when people consider sports stars or teachers as heroes, but neglect the police officers and fire fighters and corrections officers who are hurt as " just doing their job"

As far as the residency oridinace of the city, Illinois state law prohibits any city of 1 million or more from barginning over residency. That, I would think might be unconstitutional. You should see how Quinn and Brady feel about recinding this state law for starters.

------------------------------
The murder of an average law abiding citizen is likely to rate virtually no coverage at all, unless there is something sensational about it.

It's not like this is anything new. The news media does stories that they can sell papers or ad time with. How much can you write about the typical murder that anyone is likely to read?

But this injustice in the application of disciplinary action will be challenged via a class action suit in federal court. Cozzi, Mette, and all the rest; join in. It's time to get those bosses that abused the disciplinary system for their own pleasure.

Police are demonized for not taking action on criminals when they assault or harm people.

That is also the reason for the residency rule.

The theory was and is, if the cops live where they work, they will take a more active interest in keeping everyone and every place safe.

The prosecution of Ofc Cozzie, Burge and others seemed very heavy handed and criminals should get the book thrown at them the same way and crime would go down.

And dont u think its a conflict of interest when a big boss retires ,get his huge pension and the takes another job for the city
