No Range for You!

  • Environmental groups have put a bull's-eye on Southeast Side landfill property the Chicago Police Department hopes to develop into an outdoor firearms range for its officers.

The city is proposing to build the range in a landfill at 134th and Jeffery near the Calumet River. City officials are negotiating a lease with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and plan to start operating the range in the spring, Chicago Police Sgt. Ray Hamilton said.

Hamilton said the nearest city neighborhood is about a mile away and the nearest suburbs are about three-quarters of a mile away. Studies have shown the range wouldn't create noise problems for those residents, he said.

The plan is to build an earthen wall at least 20 feet high and fire bullets into it, Hamilton said. A front-end loader would periodically excavate several feet of soil and the bullets would be sifted from the earth to prevent the possibility of lead leaching into ground water, Hamilton said.

But the Southeast Environmental Task Force didn't know about the proposal until it was placed on the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District's agenda in June, said Peggy Salazar, the task force's interim director.

The task force has sent letters to the city's Department of Environment and to police Supt. Jody Weis with questions about possible noise and lead pollution, Salazar said. She also said the task force envisioned the property becoming open land for recreational use.

Last we checked, shooting was listed as a recreational sport. But now that the "green" movement is dead set against having the police well trained and adept at weapons usage, we expect Shortshanks to shit-can the project.

The link is from PoliceOne.com, but this article was written by Frank Main of the Sun Times. Not sure where we missed this one. It even quotes Ray Ray of policy group fame and the allegedly "legitimate" SWAT testing processes. That "legit" process lasted about all of twenty seconds.

The City of Chicago turned down the US Navy Seabee's offer to construct the range for free.

Gotta have those lucrative contracts to handout to get the kickbacks.

This city sucks!

Sounds like an ideal location. No nearby homes. Easy expressway access.

If they're worried about whatever damage the spent cartridges would cause they should perhaps choose to concentrate on the ecological nightmare most of the area around Lake Calumet already is.

Fuck. Just change the dirt in the berms twice a year and remove the "lead".

I could understand the concern if there were people living nearby, but there aren't.

This is not a case for NIMBYism. Not in my BackYard. Because there aren't any real NIMBYS there.

----------------------------

Who the fuck cares who set it up? If we could get our own range, we could double the number of people taking the carbine case. I'm no apologist for Ray Hamilton, believe me, but the simple truth is that the only reason we have ath PT test for the carbine course is to limit the number of people who can take the class. This is because we dont have the space or range staff to have training 27/7. But the addition of our own rifle range solves half that problem. Just sit back and welcome the range, grumble a simple 'thank you' to Ray and Jody P. for this one thing, and pray they both disappear.

Didn't the city, in the recent past announce a huge public/private, (public funds/private profits), develpoment of homes in that whole area?
Years ago the city would send people for shotgun training out to the government owned range on the army motor pool/maintenance land north of 159th street west of LaGrange Sts. Had a cool setup too. No profit in that though? If you shop out that way, you can still hear the shots from the range being used.

It is US who should refuse to go there!

It isn't bullets that will be a problem, it is all the poison poured into that ground for years that will endanger the eventual users, US!

Be prepared to see Ray Ray as a commander, and soon. Whenever the next group of Lts. is promoted (if Supt. Waterhead is still around), everyone knows TWO spots are already filled by two Sgts. who worked directly for the WEISel.
One of those spots will unoubtedly go to Ray Ray, who will probably be selected by his 'ol buddy Masters (x3) to fill the seat being kept warm by Roussell of MSF.
And to be fair, SCC, Ray Ray has maintained his shooting skills and physical conditioning well enough to qualify for SWAT. He's been there before, and if it weren't for his arrogance during his earlier stint there, he would still be there.

The closest outdoor public range in proximity to Chicago is the Frankfort Sportsman Club (191/Harlem). While it's only a shotgun range it has been at the same location for 60 years and has never had a firearms related accident in all those years. The club is also surrounded by Subdivisions and nobody complains. The club now runs trap/skeet classes in conjunction with their park district. No wildlife to harm, can shoot day or night and the residents wouldn't notice. Land that has been vacant since the 60's and destined to be vacant until the 2060's will be put to good use. More centrally located for all department members.

Also, the rules were re-written to disqualify anyone who got tossed from SWAT/HBT previously - specifically to keep Yosh out. But Ray Ray also got tossed and was still able to try out because of the giant forehead supernintendo.

OT..stopped in to Tempo in the 18th yesterday and I over heard another diner ask a few Dicks that sat down, "What's going on out there. The guy who just shot that offficer and the guy who beat those two girls with a baseball bat, both those guys had 15-17 arrests???"

One Dick replied, "We bring 'em in 'n the Judges let 'em go."

2nd largest police department in the US and the closest outdoor range to the north side of the city is probably Bristol, WI. These days the threat of armed confrontation with well armed terrorists is getting better all the time. All you have to do is call for the Chicago SWAT team and presto, about 2 hours later, there they are.

The carbine training is a good idea, allowing officers to own their own carbine is a good idea also, but the fact that the department provides so little practice with these firearms is criminal. The fact that we don't have a rifle rated facility that is less than an hours ride from home or work (except Area 5) is beyond belief. I know that the city itself is densely populated, but there should be a facility for the officers to use somewhere in Chicago. The department should really take training a bit more seriously than they do.

July 16, 2010 7:51 PM

Chicago police Superintendent Jody Weis named a 27-year police veteran today to oversee the department's patrol division a few weeks after his predecessor was reassigned after a surge of weekend shootings and homicides.

Ernest Brown got the official nod as a deputy superintendent three weeks after he was appointed acting head of the patrol division. He succeeds Dan Dugan, who was reassigned after one weekend last month in which more than 40 people were shot and eight killed.

Weis also promoted Brown's deputy chief, Nicholas Roti, to head the organized crime unit, and Lt. Anthony Carothers to commander of the Englewood police district on the city's South Side.

WOW, I cannot believe some of the BULLSHIT posted about this. Regardless of where it is, an outdoor range for Chicago police is great. I live in 16 too but lets face it, where else is the city going to find land like this to use? The place is surrounded by a private garbage dump (which is why that dumbass Salazar is a fool). I heard that the mayor is all for this and that King Ritchie the jackass THOUGHT WE ALREADY HAD AN OUTDOOR RANGE!! As far as Ray Ray goes, it's true. He did not have the proper holster and was still allowed to take the test. He did have the proper holster during SWAT school and still passed the numerous shooting quals during that time. (I'm not saying he should have been allowed to take the test initially, just stating the facts). As far as the rule changes go they DID remove a rule in the G.O. for the SGT's test that was in the P.O order for SWAT tryouts. There was a stipulation about being previously removed from SWAT that was not in the SGT's G.O. Now Yosh was removed from the testing process not because he was previously removed from SWAT but because he lied during the interview and said he didn't know why he was removed when we all know it was because he kicked one of the guys in his batteries. This wasn't the first time Yosh did something stupid like that either (nor the last). He was a great shooter and smart regarding SWAT but was an asshole.
.....And that was another edition of the TRUTH

Ray Ray of policy group fame and the allegedly "legitimate" SWAT testing processes. That "legit" process lasted about all of twenty seconds.

____

Less than that. He was caught after the shooting test by the SWAT coordinator after he switched his holster to a non-approved one. (Ray Ray went to bathroom and made switch). Coordinator wanted to nix him but was overridden by civilian head of personnel. She said he already shot and passed so there was nothing he could do. By the way she works with Ray Ray at 35th St. Marionovich didn't press issue because he wants that exempt rank so badly. Ray Ray also had his inside guy, Louie M, working to make sure that he got back on SWAT and that his spot was preserved even after he deferred going to SWAT. That is where they fucked the other sgts who finished SWAT school. All of the sudden just enough "failed" to keep Ray Ray's spot open for him. Mind you once you complete SWAT school you have passed, you get ranked, then you wait. But in order to save the spot for Ray Ray all of the sudden the process changed and some Sgts "failed." Why was this allowed? #1 Marionovich wants his gold star, (Ray whispered into his ear), #2 Sgt Ak, SWAT training sgt, who can't go on SWAT jobs because he can't pass the fitness test (bad knees) for the last 2 years wants to stay on SWAT. (Ray can make that happen). One of the other sgts who "passed" had been taken to various SWAT schools by SGT Ak, using dept equipment not available to others. These SWAT schools are not open to everyone, but AK made it happen. Bottom line is that the old HBT, phone call method is alive and well. They should have just taken who they wanted and not put on this giant farce of an "open, transparent, and fair process." This is all true and there is no one on SWAT who can or will dispute this, especially not MM, LM or AK.

Their concern for peoples getting LEAD POISON is a joke. Hell 40-50 people get lead poisoning every weekend in chicago alone. Should the city be shut down or a sign posted at the borders reading "WARNING! By entering you are subject LEAD POISONING aka lead in your a$$. Enter at your own risk." LOL

We can use the money saved by not buying ammo next year to pay for the range. We are also getting new cars next year but the city will not be purchasing gas.

=====

The city is not saving money, it's just not paying it's bills. Speer Ammo dumped the city because it defaulted on like 2 million bucks in ammo. Winchester extended credit, just wait you know that will not last. Chicago can not maintain and keep open the local department ranges, and who will stupidvise the range anyway?

7/17/2010 08:08:00 AM

The city NEVER pays it's bills, at least not on time. They stiff the non-connected, make them wait a long time, then offer .75 cents on the dollar for the "privilege" of doing business with the City of Chicago.

That is a long standing business practice with the City of Chicago.

We cannot sign up for the Department Procured Outside Employment because Chicago, City of owes Oracle lots of money and Oracle maintains the computer system which allows officers to sign up for Special employment.

No bucks for Oracle means no bucks for us. The computer system will not be changed until payment is made. Typical city BS under daley.

The only way a contractor or company should do business with Chicago, City of is COD or better yet, cash in advance.

Open part of it up to civilians, I would gladly pay $20-30 to shoot my rifles without an hour or two drive and paying $30 + gas to either Bristol Wis, or Buffalo Rock anyway.

.....And that was another edition of the TRUTH

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Amazing how "the TRUTH" glosses over the LESO scandal brewing just out of sight, but thanks for confirming Ray Ray took the SWAT test illegally with improper equipment and that the rules were changed to screw certain unconnected sergeants. The truth is out there.

The inside dope is that Ray Ray is deffering SWAT until he is made a Lt at which time he will take over as SWAT coordinator. MM will be given his promotion (maybe, unless Ray lied to get MM's spot, that is Ray Ray's MO) Ray's cabin boy Louie will get his stripes and come right back to SWAT. AK may be allowed to stay, even though he will never be healthy enough to be operational. Or, this will a be a moot point because something better will come along for Ray Ray and the promises made will be broken. Non-connected Sgts get screwed in process to hold his spot, SWAT pawns get left behind holding empty bags. I've known Ray since he did his internship at the Mayor's office, he was a self serving, back stabbing, lying piece of shit then and he is still the same now. Those on SWAT who perverted what was supposed to be a legitimate selection process for self gain, I hope you reap what you sow. I hope Ray screws you like he does everyone to get what he wants.
