West Pullman Shooting

Violent crime is down across the board, so says J-Fled.

In the meantime, this has to be one of the worst cases of mistaken identity we've ever seen or someone isn't telling the whole truth:
  • Police on Friday said that tips from witnesses have pointed them toward a suspect in the slaying of a 13-year-old boy, but investigators are still seeking additional help.

Also, police said they couldn't verify claims by the family of the victim, Robert Freeman Jr., that Wednesday's shooting might have been a case of mistaken identity.

Robert, who had been a student at Oglesby Elementary School, was shot 13 times in the 11500 block of South Perry Avenue, police said. Several witnesses have come forward to identify the gunman, acting Calumet Area Cmdr. John McMurray said.
The "falling crime rate" has to be a tremendous comfort to the family. The Sun Times comes up with the quote of the day though:
  • Neighbor Cola Townsend, 80, said that after he heard the gunshots Wednesday, he looked outside and saw “the boy was lying there in the street and 10 little kids in white T-shirts were running away as the cops arrived, like they always do.

“I’ve lived on this block 35 years, and it’s never been this bad.”

"Crime rates" don't mean squat. The "perception" of crime is what matters, especially in election years. And right now, the perception is that things haven't been this bad on the block since 1985, which was around the height of the "crack wars." That's a hell of an indictment of J-Fled's tenure.

Cop sues city, seeks overtime for BlackBerry use
FEDERAL LAWSUIT | Says gang-unit duties required he spend off-duty time on device

July 31, 2010
BY FRANK MAIN Staff Reporter/fmain@suntimes.com

Like millions of Americans, Chicago Police Sgt. Jeffrey Allen's job had him on an electronic leash of sorts.

Even when he was off duty, Allen says, he performed work on his department-issued BlackBerry. Now he wants to get paid for the off-duty time he spent on the device.

An arbitrator says the use of BlackBerrys and other smartphones by police and other workers is an ‘‘uncharted, undefined area for many employers.’’

Allen has sued the city in federal court, seeking overtime pay for up to two years. His lawsuit, filed earlier this year, seeks OT for similarly situated officers, too.

"Over a period of years, I am confident there are hundreds of hours," said Paul Geiger, one of his attorneys.

The city has not yet filed a response to the lawsuit.

Allen was issued a BlackBerry while he was in the gang-investigations unit. "These guys, regardless of rank, are spending in some cases hours on the phone dealing with search-warrant issues and calls from supervisors about cases -- and they're working when it's not their tour of duty," Geiger said.
---

A similar situation now exists with regards to use of personal cell phones. Officers are now expected to use their own personal cell phones during duty hours to perform duty related tasks. The department does not pay one cent towards my cell phone, indeed, this city makes me wait THREE YEARS to get a signed contract and my back pay!

That together with the latest outrage of the Cozzi appeal is enough for me to leave my cell phone in my locker while at work.

Every little thing I can do to stick it in jodyweis's ass, I will do. We all need to get on that train. Start be leaving our cell phones in the locker and/or flat refusing to use them for work purposes.

I know the Department is playing with those numbers to fool the public. Don't believe anything Jfed oR Daley have to say about crime being down. Homicides are being divided by inside/outside and death investigation. These are three things are not added together. They are separated to give one set of numbers to the public. Beware, Chicago death and violence numbers are higher than you think.

Whoever it was that assassinated that kid did so with precision. One thing's for sure, his eyesight and aim are quite good! I don't believe the 'mistaken identity' theory being touted about by his family, either. The papers say he wanted to relocate to live with other relatives outside of Illinois to avoid the violence of that community before being gunned down. Maybe he pissed off the gangs over in his neighborhood by resisting recruitment.

OT: You would think with all the issues of police station security, both inside and out, that station security would be a top priority. Who in 002 gave 2 female civilians permission to set up a big jewelry table display (necklaces/bracelets etc) between the lock up and the desk (where police and offenders are walking by) all day/night yesterday? Not kidding, is this a police station or a swap meet? Now we allow people inside the "secured area" to sell stuff??

ot from dslc blogIf you were born after 1955, you do NOT get the 3% raise in your pension that those born before 1955 get.

Think about this if you are thinking about retirement.

Oak Park Police Chief Rick Tanksley said the decision to lay off one of their two Deputy Chiefs was made so the department can be more cost-effective in tight financial times. "It is my responsibility to allocate the department's resources to where they will have the most positive impact on service delivery," Tanksley said in a memo to officers. "That means focusing on the day-to-day activities of law enforcement - the boots on the street."

J-FLED should take a lesson from this and get rid of the redundant level of upper management we have in this department. Assistant Superintendents, Deputy Superintendents, Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, Directors, Commanders. You should take a look at the Department Organization of the Chicago Police Department and see how the layers and layers of brass in the department. DO WE REALLY NEED ALL TAHT BRASS TO FUNCTION.

Yet no mention of two people shot with one dead on the 4900 blk of W. School which the tribune had on its internet page for only five minutes. I guess the
Daley controlled media has to bury shootings/homicides that occur in areas that haven't experienced violence in past years due to the falling crime rate! How many homicides have occured in Jefferson Park now?? City ignoring the big picture again.

Rev. Meeks has one of the largest Churches in the city 3 blocks from this hell hole, Alderman Beale's office is 2 blocks away. They should both be up in arms, shouting and protesting these shootings. I havent seen or heard from either...I guess nobody cares!

25 years, 10 years, 5 years or even last year, it's all the same violence on these blocks... Over and over and over again. You can have missions, initiatives, and God knows what else; you can have the smartest deputy chief or commander and the most aggressive but we all know where are the most messed up blocks are!!'

real time analysis and pod missions and bla bla bla contributed to what?

On paper things look good.. Actually just as good as the ones from last year!!

Boost moral you morons and let the police ethically police. Since when politics and religion can solve crime while taking no real action and sitting in the back seat.

God help us all.!!!

OT: As we all get older -

SPRINGFIELD — About 280,000 Cook County homeowners who automatically get a senior citizen exemption on their property taxes would have to reapply for the break every year under a provision tucked into legislation awaiting action by Gov. Pat Quinn.

House Speaker Michael Madigan backed the little-noticed addition, which is opposed by two fellow Chicago Democrats, Mayor Richard Daley and Cook County Assessor James Houlihan.

Quinn may have little choice but to sign the bill because its main purpose is to extend a popular cap on property assessments that has helped to hold down tax bills for Cook County homeowners. While Madigan is no fan of the so-called 7 percent cap, Daley and Houlihan support it and are loath to have the program expire with statewide and city elections looming.

Vote Republican!

"The papers say he wanted to relocate to live with other relatives outside of Illinois to avoid the violence of that community before being gunned down."

That's possible. Not everyone is a gangbanging shit-head. Some people want to just be left alone and maybe accomplish something worthwhile with their lives. And some people can't stand or allow that.

"Maybe he pissed off the gangs over in his neighborhood by resisting recruitment."

If that's the case, then it is just so wrong.
"Join the ____ gang or die". That sux.

So, when are Jesse and Fr. Mike going to start preaching to that issue???

Just like in 007 letting the guy sell t-shirts in the hallway, the
Costco rep or Sams club rep selling memberships, insurance reps,or the guy from college trying to get me to go back to school after 25 years etc etc. Why are these people in the hallway near lockup and trying to strong arm me to purchase something?

Pullman, Roseland, etc. had the same "problems" in 1975. How can someone say it's worst now, when it was basically the same then?

If Freeman's family moved "here" from Saginaw, MI (or wherever), then I will politely say to them "Unfortunately, you made a big mistake. Research the area you would like to live in BEFORE you actually move there."
