Good Guy: 1, Bad Guy: Dead.

A homeowner who happens to be a Chicago Police Officer defends himself:
  • An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed an armed intruder who kicked in a basement door at his West Garfield home on the South Side this morning, officials said.

The officer was calling 911 sometime after 8:45 a.m. to report that he thought someone was trying to break into his house in the 5500 block of South Normandy when he was confronted by an intruder "with something in his hand," said Eddie Welch, Wentworth Area deputy chief of patrol. The officer, who was not identified, fired his service weapon several times, killing the intruder, Welch said.

The officer had been at home recuperating from an injury, Welch said. Earlier, he had twice heard someone knocking on his door, ringing the bell and later knocking on a window but didn't think much of it, Welch said.

The officer went back to bed but then heard what sounded like someone breaking in. The intruder had kicked in a basement door, Welch said, adding that police recovered a weapon belonging to him.
We were listening to WBBM-AM this afternoon and they were reporting that no charges would be filed against the officer.

Good job, Officer.

Good job officer.

Of course, if someone knocks on my door, rings my bell, and taps windows I at least see who it is. Could be a door-to-door preacher, could be that my garage is on fire. Could be that they are looking for a house to break into.

Oh well. One less thief.

This incident is pretty clear-cut to me. I am amazed that anyone would even consider the remote possibility of charging the officer.

He did what every occupant of a household should do when someone makes a forcible entry.

This "Police Department" that I used to love and hold dear to my heart is a political agency and is run like a political machine, which is has no business being. It should be very visible to anyone that the safety of our officers and the safety of our citizens is secondary to the political manipulation of our elected officials and of those "running" the department. This promotion in light of that security contract is sickening.

Very well done sir, and let the details of this be a lesson to EVERYONE.

Whenever some grubby looking shitheads come knocking on your door looking to 'sell magazines' or whatever other pathetically transparent pretext they yse, assume your home is being cased.

If my doorbell rings and I'm not expecting company, I answer it with my hand on a Glock 26 in my pocket and am a big giant asshole towards anyone selling anything, unless they're Girl Scouts with a wagon full of cookies...

Mmmmmmmmm..... Those Coconut and Chocolate Samoas. Man, I could go for a box of those right now.

Good job officer! One less felon in the world. Unfortunatley, WGN named the block the copper lived on and then showed the front of his house WITH THE ADDRESS! They have done this before in other police -related cases. I called to complain and got some sarcastic smart-ass, who told me, "We did? Yeah, I guess we shouldn't have done that". When questioned further as to why so many ghetto "victims" addresses and even license plate numbers are blocked out, his upity response was,"what do you want us to do about it now?". I suggested blocking the address from further newscasts. His response was "Un-huh.". I called News Affairs and they would contact the media and ask them not to do this, yadda, yadda, yadda. CALL WGN and any other outlet that does this give them hell. This copper has enough on his plate right now. Again, nice work brother. You've done the neighborhood a service!

When I called and stated I was an off duty po I was transfered to 311 to make the report. An officer does not even deserve to get a car sent out. I then called the 008 district desk where I was told they were in a back log and no one could be sent for quite a while. Not even so much an offer for a ride. My partner got in a foot chase off duty with someone who broke in his garage In 012 and was transfered to 311 for an in progress call. When the police can't even get help when they need it, I can't immagine how it feels to be a citizen

Yeah you hit the nail on the head. I made a similiar post last week concerning this issue, and the only repsonse I got was from a former cc sheriff who was ticked I referred to cc sheriffs as ghetto ass's, which btw was interpreted wrong. Also in today's news...

The Sun-Times reports today that the FBI has apologized to J-Fled regarding an investigation into the activities of newly-appointed Commander Anthony Carothers. Evidently J-Fled checked with them before he promoted Tony, and he was informed that Tony was NOT being investigated, so J-Fled went ahead with it. Now the FBI admits that, yes, the new commander IS being investigated, and he already has sat for an interview with them. I wonder if the new commander followed procedure and informed IAD that he was notified that he was under investigation? Either way, I lost all respect for Weis when he made this move. Carothers has had his bite of the merit apple so many times...where does it end?

Also, it's true that Weis has promised his admin. sgt. W.B. (recently moved to A/2 Detectives) that he will be a lieutenant in this next class. It is all legit, folks!

Info for the police on the west end of 008: Yesterday morning, on the 5800 block of S Nashville, I saw an older white lady - 60-65 years old, gray hair, slim build, light colored pants and blouse, and sunglasses - slowly riding her bike on the north end of the block. She was steering the bike with one hand, and holding her cell phone like a walkie-talkie with the other hand. She was riding really slow and talking the whole time. She turned onto the block from 59th street, but only rode past the first three houses, and then turned around back to 59th street.

I've never seen someone that old talking on a cell phone and riding a bike at the same time.

Something told me to be suspicious of her.

Will the Pension Time Bomb Set Off a Crime Explosion?
by Justice Litle, Editorial Director, Taipan Publishing Group
Diane Cunningham of Colorado Springs, Colo., no longer has a flat-screen television. She decided to sell it... so she could buy a shotgun.
Colorado Springs shut off a third of its streetlights this past winter, The New York Times reports, in order to save $12 million on electricity. Shortly thereafter, a chain of events convinced Ms. Cunningham she needed to be armed.
"Her tires were slashed, she said. Her car was broken into. Strange men showed up on her porch. Her neighborhood had grown deserted at night..."
Meanwhile, in East St. Louis, Mo., Reverend Joseph Tracy is convinced guns are the problem. (Guns in the hands of criminals, that is.)
"It's open field day now," Tracy says. "The criminals are going to run wild." That dire prediction came from a decision by city council members, as reported on stltoday.com, to reduce the ranks of the East St. Louis police force by 30%.
Alvin Parks, the mayor of East St. Louis, says the city had no choice but to lay off 37 employees, including 19 police officers and 11 firefighters. There was simply not enough money to pay them, and attempts to negotiate with the police and fire unions came to naught.
Officer Michael Hubbard will reportedly be "the lone patrolman for East St. Louis' midnight shift" as a result of the cuts. One lone beat cop, to cover a crime and poverty-stricken region, at the most dangerous time of night. One.
Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, Pa., the "rolling brownout" policy imposed on city fire stations is being questioned in light of a child's death. When the call came to respond to a house fire in which a 12-year old autistic boy died, the nearest station was closed.

Yes the news showed the address. That was no mistake. They edit it and know better. They just dont care.

How about we post the home addresses and phone numbers of the Anchors and Editors of channel 7 and 9?

IPRA is investigating....

Seems to me this one should be simple. "

"Armed intruder forced entry. Menaced victim. Victim feared for safety & fired. Offender DOA."

Hell, if this was still a paper report, one should be able to close it on the back....

Came in uninvited on his feet, left escorted in a bag. The way it should be.

FYI. We do not have a friend in the new Dep Chief A1 Eddie Welch. On scene first thing he is commenting on ways to jam up copper. I'm not going into what he said for fear of ammunition for the offenders family's pending lawsuit. But this guy as a Deputy on scene, no thanks! He's no McNulty, he has no grasp of "take care of the involved officer first". Even if this genius was thinking these things, he never should have let them come out of his mouth. Those on scene know what was said. We miss you Joe Patterson! Bottom line, A GOOD SHOOTING.

For the guy who says transfer to 008 & do something about it --- I did that. I work in 008. I can't do shit about it because there are barely any cars out there and you run around everywhere. Do something on the west end & your back up is MILES away! Tac teams can't come that far west. TRU/MSF etc have to stay East. It's not that the 008th district coppers don't want to work out there on the west end; They Can't. You can't be a one man hero out there. It's reality!

second- that real real old guy, was he something like 92? he shot at CFD from inside his home when he mistook CFD for home invaders few days ago- when in fact, his medical alert device had gone off accidentally (without him knowing) and CFD was doing well being check? media put old guy's exact address in online story as well. wt...? why would they feel need to publish address of confused, feeble, debilitated old person with poor aim? set him up as prey for scumbags? CFD not pressing charges-they got it. end of story. why isn't media publishing addresses of muggers, drug dealers, murderers, bangers, career criminals? media zombies of Chicago ethically/morally/cerebral-ly d-e-a-d.

8/20/2010 04:06:00 PM

It's obvious. They do it on purpose. They go to great lengths to protect the useless, the unemployed, the addicts, etc. But we are a target event when we are victims.

This should be an edict that comes down from the administration. There should be rules in place that are followed ALWAYS or you lose your job. The media, like society, has lost all dignity and respect for anything and anybody that is decent.

Further, a lot of those cameramen have banger affiliations or petty criminal histories so it would follow that they will take their shot if they can.

Of course, if someone knocks on my door, rings my bell, and taps windows I at least see who it is. Could be a door-to-door preacher, could be that my garage is on fire. Could be that they are looking for a house to break into.

Oh well. One less thief.

8/20/2010 02:24:00 PM

That is because you are gullible enough to believe an immediate response is always necessary and it will solve all situations or problems. Nope. Guess again.

You are what we call a victim in waiting. Or, even if you were successful in scaring off or shooing away the bad guy, thereby avoiding the status of being a victim, all you've done is passed the bad guy off on your neighbor. Think about it.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Sorry to disagree with you..but unless their criticism "calls you out by name" get over it.

The way I see it, when coppers are complaining about "police presence" in the areas in which they live, they are bitching about the lack of police..NOT about the police!

You aren't the only cop who has worked in a busy district. Most of us at one time or another worked in a "busy" or worse a "ghetto" district. We carry the burden of higher property taxes then most other inhabitants of this city and get less "police protection" then other, more vocal (minority) communities.

It's unfair..but that's the way of "Daley's Chicago."

So piss off..get some time on the job and bid somewhere else, if you are unhappy..BUT don't criticize your fellow officer/taxpayer. Just watch our homes while we are at work "shuffle papers!"

Did anyone else see Fox interviewing the dead guys family? It was embarrassing. He said the offender had no criminal history, was shot between 13 and 15 times, that the officer should have shot him in the leg, and that the incident's "timing" was off. I couldn't believe what I was watching. I have never been as angry watching the news and in this city that's saying something. Oh, and to top it off, the family is considering a lawsuit against the city. GO FUCK YOURSELVES!

Thank God the officer isn't being charged. Also, if you are involved in an officer involved shooting then beware of Roseanna something wig. She is in charge of IPRA. She will pressure you to make statements, be recorded, etc.... Fuck this bitch. What does this bitch know about being the police?

8/20/2010 03:03:00 PM

If you are in an officer involved shooting you are only required to give a verbal summary to a supervisor soon after. Wait for FOP representation and the FOP attorney before ANY other questioning and statements, no exceptions.

Tell IPRA you are waiting for representation. Period. IPRA is not on your side, wait for those who are.
