Hydrant Tampering?

All those cameras downtown and no one has seen anything regarding this?
  • A few weeks ago cfd conducted a 'routine' check and found beach towels shoved into many fire hydrants downtown. Specifically fire hydrants around city hall and both federal buildings. If undetected during an actual fire, cfd equipment/trucks would swallow up the towels and be blown.

  • 100 percent true, then each house a list of hydrants to check.
Gee, wouldn't you think someone would, oh we don't know, let the cops know so they could maybe keep an eye on suspicious happenings in the area of such equipment?

Sounds like a "random act" to me.

Counter terrorism in this town doesn't really exist. We've been on the Daley plan of, "It won't happen here."

Those who know something about the subject are looked upon as nut jobs. Only in this town would that happen.

Maggie didn't like the look of guns at our airports after 9-11 so the military had to go. Does that tell you something?

We're the only major city in the country with an UNARMED airport police force because of Daley. Does that tell you anything?

But don't worry, folks. Daley tore up Miegs Field in the middle of the night for "terrorism" reasons. We'll be safe now until Rahm gets here.

Marked police cars stolen from the 025th District police lot (still not recovered), mars lights stolen off several marked police vehicles, towels in the fire hydrants protecting top level government and civilian buildings and hundreds of taxi cabs already painted in similar if not identical styles to marked police cars of the same make and model... Well I did have my second TARA class of the last 5 years so I guess we are prepared after all!!!

I assume the CFD engines and trucks have strainers in their intake ports to prevent objects from entering the pump. So, while it may have plugged the intake, and could have caused some delay in getting water, it would not have "blown" the pump.

Believe it or not SCC the CFD did let the CPD know about this. The information was given to the upper levels of the CPD who then in turn were supposed to forward this information. I may still have a copy of the email that was passed down to us from our LT. His email came from Georgas(sp?). Anyway, if you didn't hear about it it was either that your boss didn't think you needed to know (cuz he's an idiot) or the boss thought it was just bullshit (cuz he's an idiot).

Well, at least its on camera, since almost every inch of downtown is covered, and especially around city hall.

Wait, camera not working right?

Lets call another friend of the mayor and give him more cash for a system thats not working right.

Daley and his cronies can't even protect city hall!

Read the newspapers and daily bulletins.

Just in September at least 5 L.E. vehicles had the light bars stolen. 2 State Police,2 CPD, and 1 Forest Preserve Police. Also a homeland security vehicle with uniforms inside was stolen.

Also many police weapons, vests, IDs, and stars taken in residential burglaries at least once a week.

We are so NOT READY to deal with a terrorist attack. It's coming, and all the POTUS can say is "the U.S. can absorb another 9-11 type attack" I think the President's past cocaine use has clouded his ability to think!

Why not? Whats so impractical about a bulletin? Bulletins are put out all the time over all kinds of issues and I would think this qualifies. This seems to me to be more than a "Shark Bump" as in testing the waters, it seems to me as a significant "Step in furtherance" to accomplish some goal. I think we are going to get hit.

It's standard CFD operating procedure to flush out the hydrant before hooking up to it. On the west side, the hydrants are loaded with Colt 45 bottles, Chee-Toes wrappers, you name it. Although I've never seen beach towels, and that is an obvious attempt to sabotage firefighting operations. However, it would never work. Flushing would push out the towels, and the CFD Engines have strainers.

FBI raids anti-war activists' homes
Agents looking for links to terrorists, federal spokesman says

September 24, 2010

By Andy Grimm and Cynthia Dizikes, Tribune reporters

Federal agents searched homes of anti-war activists in Chicago and Minneapolis on Friday in an investigation of possible links with terrorist organizations in the Middle East and South America.

About 20 FBI agents spent most of the day searching the Logan Square residence of activists Stephanie Weiner and Joseph Iosbaker, Weiner said.

Weiner [is] a teacher at Wilbur Wright College. Iosbaker is a staff member at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In Jefferson Park, neighbors saw FBI agents carrying boxes from the apartment of community activist Hatem Abudayyeh, executive director of the Arab American Action Network. In addition, Chicago activist Thomas Burke said he was served a grand jury subpoena that requested records of any payments to Abudayyeh or his group.

"The warrants are seeking evidence in support of an ongoing Joint Terrorism Task Force investigation into activities concerning the material support of terrorism..."

It reduces the water pressure when you are using the hydrant for construction, etc. pop the cover, pack the towels, screw in the cover but leave it loose enough, turn it on a little, you got a trickle of water instead of something spaying all over and being noticed.

Point of Information.

If the FF does his job correctly, hge is required to open & flush the hydrant before it is connected to the Engine so this exact thing does not happen. Also there is a cone like screen in each intake port to also prevent this from happening as a 2nd means of safety.
So as long as the Engineer & hydrant man does it right it just won't happen.

How do you stuff a beach towel into a fire hydrant? Wouldn't the water pressure push it back out again?

If you take off the cap, water does not come out until you use a wrench to release the valve on-top of the hydrant
