March Coverage

Chicago Breaking News and the Sun Times. Channel 2, Channel 5 and Channel 7.

And of course, the argument about numbers begins:
  • They say they're tired, they need help and they're worried about their safety. And so are their loved ones. Hundreds of Chicago Police officers raised signs of protest and their voices Wednesday, saying they need more officers on the street.

Rank and file officers are marching around Chicago Police Headquarters Wednesday morning, taking aim at their boss, Supt. Jody Weis. Such a protest has never happened before.
The media consensus seems to be "300 officers." They must have learned their shady counting from the people who have been telling Chicagoans crime is "down." Including family members, interested citizens and supporters from other unions, our headcount, and the counts of those we traveled with had it around 600. Not the thousand or more hoped for, but still, not the bomb others were predicting.

Meeks and Fioretti were the big mayoral hopefuls on scene. The Sun Times had pictures of Colleen Lawson marching. Ms. Lawson was one of the lead plaintiffs in the McDonald v Chicago case that restored Second Amendment Rights to Chicagoans. We saw some brass marching, too, but we'll see if anyone else noticed - like when the dumps start in a day or two.

Rahm wants to be Mayor and is dictating what and who will do what. Rahm is telling Jesse Jr to run or to have his wife run if Rev. Meeks is the strong unified black candidate or get indicted for the Blago affair.

Never let a crisis go to waste!

WASHINGTON--White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.)--both mulling Chicago mayoral runs--huddled in Washington on Wednesday night.

"It's fair to say they had a conversation not only about the race, but about the city itself," said a source who declined to be named.

Emanuel and Jackson are among the more than two dozen potential contenders pondering jumping in the Feb. 22, 2010 nonpartisan Chicago mayoral primary in the wake of Mayor Daley's decision last week not to seek another term.

Jackson's wife, Sandi, a Chicago alderman, also is on some long lists of maybe candidates.

Emanuel is wrestling with what is a major life decision for him, one being made in the context of having to juggle major domestic and international matters for the Obama White House. Emanuel commissioned his long-time pollster, Stanley Greenberg to poll Chicagoans to help Emanuel test issues and his own viability.

Channel 7's coverage of the protest was sickening. They insisted upon broadcasting their "interview" with some shitbird "supporter" of J-Fled. He's described as "Albert Thompson, a 35th street resident". This clown, who is clearly absolutely clueless about the problems facing this city and this department in regards to manpower and everything else stated the following "I guess it's just when you have a leader that's hard and wants you to do the job, you just have to, uh, get with the program and do the job that's required." Clueless. Its on the abc7 website. Check it out.

The City is broke and we are not helping the problem. Instead of writing less parking citations and moving ticket offenses, we should be writing many more. This would bring in revenue that would go towards the shortfalls!

The reason for the low turn out of support may be because Weis may have been right all along. Those that didn't show are truely Weis supporters. Everyone talks the talk been when it comes down to it they can't walk the walk. Sad, just sad. I was there and talked the talk and walked the walk. These colors don't run.

the F.o.P knows that that police hiring is out of the hands of the police department. It always had been and will always be out of our hands. J-fed sat before the city council and stated that the number of police we had was becoming dangerous and that more hiring had to be done.
stop using cozzi as a scape goat to get rid of Jodi! Alright, he got a raw deal however he pled quilty and is not going to be set free until his sentence is done. His family deserves better then having again to read what he did in today's Sun-times. You want to help the man F.O.P, give him a job when he is released from prison.
I have to say I agree with J-fed that it is the F.O.P. who has let us down. This protest is as if we were going to protest G. bush to leave after Obama was elected. it made no sense to me.
I think the membership needs to think about the real reason the F.O.P. had this march? I don't even have the answer to my own question ! I do have a feeling it had nothing to do with man power or the needs of the rank and file

I don't think my To-From saying I went to the March Against Weis instead of court would have flown over too good with the bosses. So I'm sure that number of 600 in attendance marching might have been over say 800 or so.

Weis will be gone in about 6 months. Daley will be gone in May. I worry tremendously about what is to come after that. Can you imagine what would happen to this city if someone like Meeks were to become mayor? Or Alderman Ed Smith? A decade from now, I think we're all gonna be looking back at the Daley years and thinking just how good we had it. I think we're all fu**ed. Police and working citizens alike.

As you can see and read in todays press, the march did not garner any support from the public. It made the issues seem petty that has divided support among the rank and file. As much as the trial and conviction of Cozzi irks every active and retired police officer, you will not find the general public very sympathetic. When , and if, someone in the press really writes an investigative article on promotions and assignments within the department, then maybe it will cause some stir. Until then, frankly, no in the public, or the media, really cares about the everyday internal struggles of the police department.

This is what happens when a clout-ocracy implodes. Daley walks away and all the cronies (with no skills are in charge).

I read the comments after the Sun-Times article and they were not flattering to the rank-and-file.

The Vice Lords sent an EMail to the union???? It's THEIR city???

There will be some big crisis or firefight and we will see how bad leadership is.

Average citizens? Better start carrying. CPD won't come to your aid. Or they will, after they take care of the other 6 calls they have backed up on their list.

As for all of you that keep voting the same way - you GOT what you VOTED for.

As for you marginal coppers - clout babies, whatever - better start going to the range and practicing up. Hopefully, you are prior military - but I doubt it.

Sharpen those skills you never honed.

This is the beginning of the end of the current FOP administration. The FOP should have waited until the next union meeting to a grasp of what the membership wanted regarding a protest. Instead the FOP went off the cuff and let's give them the benefit of the DOUBT that 600 protesters including family members and FOP staff were there. OK - Now What?

The was march scheduled prior to the Mayor stating he was not going to run for re-election. Duh FOP...easy excuse to postpone the protest. Everyone knows J-Fled is gone! THIS PROTEST WAS ABOUT THE CURRENT FOP ADMINISTRATION RUNNING SCARED, BECAUSE OF THEIR ELECTION! FOP Board, it is to late now. New leadership is on the horizon.

The showing was a a travesty for FOP. The march did not garner any public sympathy and very little CPD support.

P.S. Greg you could have at least worn a suit, instead of looking like a guy selling "Street Wise".

OT - From the FB page of Lt Andrews

John R Andrews - The protest at Chicago Police HQ by police officers today also inspired one gang — the Vice Lords — to fire off an e-mail message to the police union. “Get a grip my man and stand down to the greatness of the Almighty Vice Lords Nation,” said the message to an FOP board member. “This is our town cupcake!”

Is this the Chicago YOU want? As I wrote, we are fast-tracking to anarchy.

U either work for the mayor or some liberal from Hyde Pk or Rogers Pk. The Mayor has been stealing money from the police budget for years. He shouldn t have to look 4 more money to hire more police because money for 13,200 was already in the budget. Why should we give him more revenue so he could blow it on buddies of his. Maybe if u take those tif zones away with about 700 million we wouldn t be in this mess.

Mike knows that we are the ones that go out there every day. Mike Shields is fighting for our pension to be maintained the noble way. Mike has stuck his neck out and courageously went face to face with heavily clouted people in this city fighting against people attempting to dip into our pension unworthy. Mike is doing all this without knowing most of the names and faces of the police officers that will soon be retired or one day will retire. He is doing it because that is what Mike said he would do if he was elected to the pension board. Image what he would do for us as FOP PRESIDENT!

MIKE SHIELDS you need to run for FOP PRESIDENT we need someone like you.

Hey Mike, I have a few questions. I have my concerns about your experience. I worked with you in 011 and let's be honest you were not a ball of fire. The pension funded level has gone done since you have been our pension trustee. I am not saying it is only your fault, but you are partly to blame.
Also how are you going to fight this two tier pension system that the mayor is attempting to shove down our throats.
And doesn't Ariel Management still have our money at the fund. I don't think you are the answer.

You may be right that he doesn't do the hiring, but he certainly does manage the deployment of the few of us that are left. I could give two shits what the public thinks abou us cops. The only time Joe blow supports something or is in an uproar is when starbucks no longer makes vendi size drinks or they pay more for thei overpriced piss. This was not for garnering support from Joe schmo it was about POs banding together. The public will always hate the police get that through your head. They get a ticket because of their stupidity. They hate the cops. Husband beats wife up you lock him up they hate you. Being a cop is not about being popular with the public. As it is, with 25 years seniority it would be hard for them to move me but if they do, that is fine, I need a good lawsuit and my lawyer needs the work. And there are those pesky minor surgeries I have been meaning to get.

"Where's Northen?!?"

I don't know Northen. Never met him, but I will guarantee that you will NEVER do as much, when YOU are retired, as he has.

Carry on.
