Mayoral Support - LA Style

  • Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa also offered a vigorous defense Thursday of the officers involved, saying they were heroes who "acted with bravery."

"Let's be clear, and I will be, about what happened in the Westlake area," Villaraigosa told reporters. "There was a man with a knife. That man with a knife was threatening individuals, innocent people who were on the street there. That man was in close proximity — in fact, the facts will show that actually he had his hand on at least one person at some point in that altercation.

"We've got to go through an investigation," Villaraigosa said. "But when it's all said and done, I'll guarantee you what's going to come out is that these guys are heroes, and I stand by them."

Cops kill a knife-wielding assailant and the mayor is right there, backing their proper, lawful and effective Use of Force. That's fantastic.

We've never seen anything approaching this sort of statement in any police shooting in all of our years. Neither has any old timer we've approached. The closest thing we can even recall is old man Daley's "shoot to kill arsonists" order.

Nowadays? Reverends up in arms, lawyers lining up with their hands out, Corp Counsel negotiating dollar amounts and the City Council signing off on any settlement that passes by. Maybe the LA Mayor can write a book and then someone here can steal every idea out of it?

A smart cop named Cooter once said, "I don't need you to back me up when I'm right, I don't expect you to back me when I'm wrong, just be there for me when I'm in that gray area.".
Maybe someone can get J-Fled or our next mayor to understand that.

---------------------

The sad thing is, there are people today who would argue against this.

Pookie standing there with a lit rag sticking out of a pickle jar full of gas, about to combust a 4-Flat and potentially kill everyone inside, yet in the year 2010, is there any doubt that entirely too much leeway would be given to the 'kider, gentler approach' in this spot?

Of course, that's only so long as he doesn't get that Molotov off and roast the building, so 'what might have happened' can be second guessed. If he does, and does kill all those people and the police DO NOT use whatever level of force they have at their disposal to stop him, well, those very same people would be wringing their hands and asking why more wasn't done.

There are some people out there who will second-guess everything you do. All you can do is accept the fact that these people exist- a few of whom have tall pulpits from which to preach their bullshit- and do the job as it needs to be done.

The public is nuts if they think there is any sort of pro-active police work going on. Not from me nor any of my co-workers, that's for sure.

Respond to calls, do a case report, arrest an offender if on the scene, leave. That's it. Nothing that could be construed as aggressive.

I looked up "pro-active police work" in the general orders. Nothing there. Same with "aggressive police work." Nothing.

Not at all, nothing written down about either aggressive or pro-active. And certainly no guarantee of indemnification and payment of punitive damages.

No legal protection for me. Therefore, wave as I go by.

And be careful out there.

The other day here in Florida a dash board police cam observed three officers trying to subdue an offender. Two of the officers were attempting to handcuff a subject while he was on the ground. The third officer was punching him in his side, and stomach.

The offender screamed and tried to get the officers in trouble. The department (Ft. Myers) backed the officers by saying that the third officer was performing a procedure they were trained for called a "distraction technique.

Maybe the CPD should "learn" this technique to alleviate citizens complaint of excessive force.

We need Frank Rizzo as mayor. He always supported his police- as chief and then mayor of Philly.

He was known to show up in courtrooms where his police officers were being sued and sit with them, put his arm around them, and support them. They could do no wrong.

It was kind of funny. He was run out of city hall by the Blacks and progressive doper diaper babies. Then, his successor, the first Black Mayor, authorized a fire bomb be dropped on an HBT location in a Black neighborhood. It burned down the whole neighborhood- urban renewal? He then blamed the police, naturally.

Yesterday evening I watched a couple of officers removing a homeless guy from where he was sleeping; under the bushes surrounding a residential building.

I thought they handled the situation very well, maintaining control of the situation while treating the guy (who appeared drunk, high, completely without English skills or mentally not-so-bright) as decently as getting him out of there allowed.

A small incident but I thought they handled it very professionally, so it stayed small. It was interesting to watch.

That kind of backup from our bosses from the Chicago Mayor on down would NEVER happen here! The first thing that happens is a CR investigation and an attempt to crucify and second guess the Officers from the whiny Reverends and liberal Media!

What a novel idea … We get bashed in the media by offender’s families, reverends, so called witnesses. Why doesn’t an elected official or Police management come out and say they stand behind the Officer’s decision?

Yes, when your City is broke, bankrupt, and in Chaos, you will praise the police, as you know your City is on the verge of Anarchy. Then, when things are running smoothly, you villanize the cops again, and use them for a political football. Remember, when they're Liberal Democrat politicians, they really don't like or support you, but will use you, and praise you, when it is beneficial to Them. Otherwise, you are just a necessary evil to them.

We've never seen anything approaching this sort of statement in any police shooting in all of our years. Neither has any old timer we've approached."

Authoritarians like Mayor Daley value a vigorous, active criminal class. Street criminals are important enforcers of consensus reality; they serve to help keep the population fragmented, fearful, and easily controllable -- indoors and isolated in front of the TV, which transmits the messages of their rulers.

The worse crime gets, the more the citizens cry for "someone to do something." That'd be Authority...putting up surveillance cameras that don't work, confiscating decent people's gun collections, strip-searching the elderly at airports, and hiring obvious, visible pedophiles as "security guards" at the public library...

Richie was on the news and said if I fired every cop someone told me to fire there would be no police left. Mayor, I realize you are trying to be as witty as you father but its not working.
And I would like to know who told you to fire me.
This stupid comment does not make up for the fact, if 1 person asked you to fire me, you have thousands asking to fire JFed. Where is the balance?

The dead guy was Guatemalan. Villaraigosa is Mexican (as are most L.A. Hispanics). Mexicans don't give a damn about Guatemalans.

I'm not disregarding Villaraigosa's action - but there really was little political cost for him on this.

Just A Civilian (who's read up on this case)

That guy was the mayor. The police were just waking him and taking him home.

I knew right away he must be the mayor due to your description "drunk, high, completely without English skills or mentally not-so-bright."

Yup, that's mayor daley all right. Perfect description.
