On the Way Downtown

Underway. We will attempt periodic updates, but phone blogging is sporadic in the best of times. Send photos if you can and we'll try to get the best ones up.

UPDATE: Some pics ...

UPDATE: Saw Ald. Fioretti talking to some media people.

UPDATE: Wrapping it up here just before the noon news cycle starts? Numerous CTA personnel were here bitching about the lack of police on the buses and in the tunnels. Thanks for your support!

The department put out the list of shame today of those who have failed to comply with the Ethics training requirement and heading the list once again is: Jody Weis followed quickley by Debra Kirby, Ted O'Keffe, James Jackson and of course your favorite "Downtown Ernie Brown. Yep Jody is leading by example once again. Lets hear is for those unethical SOBs we know as the Sup and his command staff.

100 people showed up. 150 tops. The FOP just signed their own death warrant, and in the process took any shred of credibility we had as a collective and flushed it right down the toilet. This event was a rousing success for one Jody Weis. The FOP couldn't have botched this thing worse if they were trying (which conspiracy theorists will likely feast on -- I disagree, they're too incompetent to execute a conspiracy). Mark, you just got pantsed in a PR contest against the most reviled man in recent CPD history. This debacle is tantamount to a vote of confidence in Weis. With all his recent public appearances and smoke and mirrors on the "JPWeis renew my contract tour," this fiasco is the greatest PR coup of all. Compliments of your FOP, ladies and gentleman. On April 2, 2009, we had thousands of protestors marching around City Hall. This morning, we had hundreds of protestors at police headquarters.

What was Mark Donahue thinking when he chose headquarters over City Hall despite overwhelming support for a repeat at City Hall?

The next City Council meeting at City Hall is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th, over two weeks after next Tuesday's FOP general membership meeting.

The incident has led the blog to tag Weis "J-Fled."

As a retired officer of CPD, all I can say is, BRAVO!
And for you, SCC, I have some questions which you can feel free to spin a new thread on:

1) Why no verbal or visible support for Weis from any of his Command Staff? Have they all gone to ground? Eh? What's that you say, Jimmy? Aunt Bea?
EB? Dugan? ANYBODY? Does anyone recall a Supt. of CPD in the past 30 years or so who has been so summarily abandoned completely by his Executive Staff? I can't either! By none of them collectively saying ANYTHING, they've spoken volumes about the clueless leader.

2) Why has the mysterious 3M been so silent over all of this? Could this be under orders of Shortshanks? Although we've all noted that Masters has yet to be interviewed by any major news outlet
(and for the record, little Mike, probably less than 1% of the faithful on this 'insignificant blog' reads CRAINS or CHICAGO JEWISH NEWS!), why no support from Masters, the Supt.'s so-called "hand picked" Chief of Staff? Looks to me like he's just trying to save his own skin when the final heave-ho comes to J-Fled. Here's hoping there's a spare set of hands to shove your sniveling hide aside too, little guy.
For a man whose mission from the onset was to 'move this Dept. into the 21st Century,' how will your resume summarize your time in the CPD when you've moved on to greener political pastures? I've got it.
"No one told me I'd have to become a real policeman first in order to succeed." Gosh, maybe Jody could use that too.

WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!?!?!??! I counted less than 150 people...including children!

I'll tell you what happened. FLOP got in the game WAY too late, and by doing so only confused things more. This has been their M.O. for a quite some time, regardless of who's at the helm.

THEY DO NOT HAVE OUR BEST INTERESTS IN MIND, NOR DO THEY FUCKING CARE!!

Scapegoat Aguilar probably drew the short straw and had to attach his name to the letter released from the lodge. And being naturally pessimistic, I can see this whole thing orchestrated by Daley, Weis and Marky Mark as condition(s) to their existence post-CPD/FOP.

In ending, this WHOLE regime has got to go. Daley's done, Weis is on the ropes via contract expiration and the FLOP "Prez" is going to be maxed-out at the end of this term.

DonaHOE being unable to return is great, but we need to get rid of everyone that sits in that building. An entirely new slate now that the momentum's started should be a great thing.

I hope Mike Shields has assembled a decent ticket; if everyone else on that ticket has half the balls and brains that he does, my ballot will be returned straight Shields Party.

REV. Meeks (smells a political opening) and wants "both parties to come to the table of brotherhood." The problem is that WEIS is incapable of accepting criticism and he is a cronic liar when it suits his purpose. Thousands of officers march against the Supt. of police not once but twice in the span of a year and he remains unconvinced that he is the cause of poor morale and no pro-active police. What will it take and how many more cops or CPS kids will die and get shot because of WEIS'S FAILED POLICIES???? In the interest of public safety he must be fired now. There must be a working and civil relationship between the FOP rank/file officers and the supt's office. This does not exist now and is irrepairable.

By the numbers it appears the march has been a total flop. We got great news coverage but yesterday when I asked I couldn't find one person on my watch that was going. Morale is beyond repair when nobody even cares to march to make a statement. Most veterans know nothing is going to change; nobody wanted to burn time for this, waste a day from their furlough, pay for a sitter or miss court ($). My point is morale is far lower then we think, today is proof. Yesterday the majority of the people I asked didn’t even know anything about it. Today was not of victory for Weis it was a “close the door turn off the lights” moment for the Chicago Police Department.

I know that we all know that dude spit on him and was acting like an animal and deserved to be hit. bill pled guilty in both courts. I hate to say it but bill is now a criminal(technically but we all know he is not). we cannot continue to publically support him and say that we are mad because a criminal was fired. if bill were to get his job back then it would indeed seem like the buisness as usual crap that jfled continues to spout off about. if we support bill it needs to be between us and bill and thats it. the public will not support a police department who wants to get rid of the boss just because he punishes people who deserve it. it makes it as if we want to just go out and beat people when weis is gone. people need to relax with the bill cozzi issue. I wish him the best and jfled fucked him but we cant keep putting that in the public because I hate to tell you the public is in jfleds corner on this issue.

SET THE "WAY BACK " MACHINE TO JAN. 8,2008:
On a 44-1 vote, the City Council confirmed veteran FBI agent Jody Weis as police superintendent. Alderman Pat Dowell [D-3rd] provided the sole no vote.

Alderman Isaac Carothers [D-29th], who chairs the police and fire committee, said that the decision to confirm Weis involved "no heavy lifting."

Carothers praised the way Weis handled himself at the hearing and defended Weis' $310,000 salary as appropriate given the new superintendent will also head the city's emergency management office.

"If you can help bridge the gap and create more transparency and continue the trends we've got going with regard to a lower homicide rate--If you can do all these things you're worth every single penny," said Carothers.

"This is an easy one for us, to keep the best police department in the world moving in the right direction," added Carothers.

Alderman Sharon Dixon [D-24th] said she looked forward to seeing Weis build bridges to the city's diverse communities and institute fresh approaches to cleaning up drugs and violence.

"I hope you will serve as a change agent," she said to Weis.

Dowell said that after sitting through five hours of confirmation hearings for Weiss, she was not convinced that he was the best person for the job.

"I was troubled by your testimony [at the confirmation hearing]. You didn't offer any serious strategies for policing and you spoke in generalities," said Dowell.

She also said that Weis demonstrated limited knowledge about Chicago's neighborhoods.

"We have a lot of police violence and misconduct and issues of gangs and drugs in our communities," said Dowell. "It seems to me that you could do a little homework about the city you're moving into."

44 - 1 VOTE, just wondering who wasn't present for the vote? Any potential Mayoral candidate perhaps?

For 5 hours the City council debates over to approve ShortShanks Stuperintendant. Was that about 4-1/2 hrs more than it took to approve the sale of the parking meters ? Only Now the (which) Aldermen have buyer remorse? Carry JFLED out on a pole over the leased Skyway & toss him in, Indiana side of course.

•Donahue explained why the rank and file is so angry about Bill Cozzi.
•If I heard correctly (it was a bad connection between Donahue and Conn), he then talked about the budget for the police department and that the force is 700 officers short.

At the end of the interview after Donahue had disconnected, Conn said he’s had Weis on the show and he seems to be a guy with integrity, that he’s smart and wants to do the right thing and will be respected when he leaves the job. Conn also offered to mediate between Weis and FOP. Roper encouraged people to either call their station or write to the Sun-Times with their comments.

This why this department is turning to shit to many salty people. I am sad that these young guy and girls that can stay out all night could not show support for you fellow brothers and sisters.

Many of you treat this as a job its an honorable profession as a sign with a po star reads earned not given.

Dear SCC,

Assuming you were at the march, why do you allow politically motivated LIES about the number of people marching? By my count, approximately 630 people were marching at 10:35. Would you please verify.

Anyone saying 100 to 150 people TOPS is just a stone liar. Call out the liars, SCC.

He is liberal defense attorney who made his money suing the City. He is not a friend of the police. He is a Mendel Grad about 1975 and grew up in Pullman. Do not support him I live in his ward and have watched him parcel off land for section 8 housing.

Lets talk about the next FOP election. What has Mike Shields done at the pension board? How has he protected our pension? How will he keep our officers from going to a two tier pension system? This is what is important to me. It should be important to all of us. I was told that shields is running lets hear what answers he has.

Michael Carroll’s campaign is personal to me. I am married to a Police Officer who works in the inner-city. Can you imagine how it felt when I received a phone call from the emergency room that my husband had been attacked by 2 ferocious pit bulls? He recently came home from work with a bruise on his leg. It was the FULL imprint of a shoe. Can you imagine how hard he had to be kicked to have a full footprint bruise? He has been spit on, punched, slapped, kicked and shot at. The shortage of police officers compromises the safety of every cop on the beat. If THEIR safety is compromised, OUR safety, as citizens, is compromised exponentially. It’s time for a change in the political climate of our city. Having Michael Carroll as the 46th Ward Alderman is a major step in the right direction. Please encourage your families and friends in the 46th Ward to vote for him.

I thought there was going to be a simultaneous march @ City Hall...sworn down @ 35th & Citizens, friends, family @ CH. Showed up....no one. Quite disappointed. This march should only be about Officer and Citizen's safety and how the lack of manpower is affecting that. It should have been held @ City Hall. Then you would have seen the thousands that were at the one last year. Whoever organized the last one, will they pick the ball up and run w/ it for the next council meeting?

Be safe!!

It was a huge mistake to have this at 35th. Coppers will be reticent to march against other coppers, even if it's their own idiot superiors.

They would have no hesitation, however, to march against idiot politicians.

Anyone with any sense about him knew that having this at 35th was a mistake. I don't think you can call a 'bust' - not all marches garner thousands of people, but they still have a legitimate message to be said- but I do think you can say that it drastically underperformed, relative to it probably would've done had it been held at city hall.

The FOP is a joke. This was very poorly planned. It was an absolute embarrasment. Only 150 people showed up???????

The problem is the union leaders are so out of touch with the patrolmen. They are so far removed. I have nearly 8 years on the job and have seen the FOP leaders exactly twice in my district at roll call. Why don't you old timers get off your asses at the union hall and come and talk to the real police and atleast try and get a feel for what the hell is going on.

Donahue is a fool for thinking he can send out an email and post a piece of paper up in the districts and expect everyone to show up. For what? You need to come out and rally the troops. You really think a piece of paper taped up on a bulletin board can rally a mass of coppers. Most coppers didnt even know what the march was for.

Plus the timing and location are very suspect. The majority of patrol already believes that FOP is in bed with the city. So Donahue waits until the contract is done, the mayor anounces his retirement, and jfled is a lameduck with a few months left. What was the point of the march at headquarters? March on city hall!!!

To the FOP get a clue and start listening to the the patrolmen you work for instead of talking down to them all the time you pompous dbags.

Mark Donahue was on Roe Conn show this afternoon and he finally got a pint out that the public needs to hear:JFed and his command staff are not properly allocating our very limited resources. They keep stripping patrol in the form of detailing people to all these specialized units. Patrol almost never gets replenished. It has reached the critical stage and the tax paying public should be very concerned and pissed off.
JFraud will stand at the podium and say we're a little short manpower but we still have adequate staffing to serve the public. Complete bullshit and he knows it. We know it and anyone who's had to wait hours for the police know it too.
Critical times call for critical measures and any Superintendant worth a hill of beans would realize that he can quickly bolster patrol by shrinking and or eliminating a lot of these useless units. We'd still be short cause they're not hiring but at least patrol would be in a better position to do what the public expects of us. Then again what would I know I've only been on 25 years it's not like I'm part of that elite policy group or anything!

Rumor on manpower is that there are still 40 people who have appealed, or are appealing off of the 06 list. Any truth to that? Oh well -- with these clowns at the helm, we've gotten the department we deserve. What a sick joke it all is.

Change is long overdue in the FOP. The problem was present with the outcome to the protest today at headquarters. The FOP has no smarts and courage to challenge City Hall. I believe we need new and younger blood to move us in a new direction.
Mike Shields would be a strong FOP President. Mike has a long record of standing up for us officers and openly voicing his opinion about fairness and looking out for today’s Policeman and tomorrow’s Retiree. There have been so many shenanigans that have gone on with our pension fund in the past and present years. Here is an important question that we really don’t ask ourselves but keep paying our pension dues. Do you know where your pension money goes every time you pay into it? Like me, I’m guessing No or better yet who dips into it, Mike Shields while on the pension board has been taking all of the deceitfulness to the media so that hopefully there could be a stop to it. Mike Shields has been very outspoken for standing up for what we earned and belongs to us. Mike Shields has made a valid effort in protecting and preserving the money that is entitled to us once we retire.
Things not to be forgotten that Mike Shield has done since being elected to the Pension Board…..

- Confronted with Fox News then CTA President Ron Huberman, who is now head of CPS (and once upon a time a Chicago police officer) after Huberman asked the police pension fund for permission to keep paying into that fund. Huberman has not been a Chicago Police Officer since 2004. The board deferred action on the request.

- Was on the pension board that declined to reinstate the pension of ex-Chicago cop Anthony "Twan" Doyle (family secrets trial) that was convicted to 12 years for passing along secrets about evidence to imprisoned mob boss Frank Calabrese Sr.

- Mike Shields was threatened with a defamation suit for writing about the truth after City of Chicago Treasurer Stephanie Neely’s (one of Mayor Daley’s cronies) unethical acceptance of campaign contributions. She received $15,000 from executives of Ariel Capital Management (manage invested properties). Ms. Neely also received a $1,500 donation from DV Urban Realty a real estate investment business owned by Mayor Daley's nephew Robert Vanecko and Vanecko's business partner Allison S. Davis. DV Urban Realty Partners manages $68 million for five city pension funds -- representing Chicago police officers, teachers, CTA employees and other city workers. Since 2006, the pension funds have paid Vanecko and Davis more than $2.7 million of $8 million in management fees the pair are guaranteed by the time their deal ends, on Dec. 31, 2014. Any profits they make on real estate deals with the pension money are to be shared among the pension funds, Vanecko and Davis.

- Mike Shields made noise to the media about Supt. Jody Weis and three of Weis' top aides about being members of the police pension fund.

Mike knows that we are the ones that go out there every day. Mike Shields is fighting for our pension to be maintained the noble way. Mike has stuck his neck out and courageously went face to face with heavily clouted people in this city fighting against people attempting to dip into our pension unworthy. Mike is doing all this without knowing most of the names and faces of the police officers that will soon be retired or one day will retire. He is doing it because that is what Mike said he would do if he was elected to the pension board. Image what he would do for us as FOP PRESIDENT!

MIKE SHIELDS you need to run for FOP PRESIDENT we need someone like you.

Good on all who showed up!

A smaller turn out than the march at City Hall but we have faith that this will most assuredly be rectified on 06 Oct 2010

See you all at the next FOP meeting. Make double damn sure it's SRO. The fraternal leadership has a "lot of 'splainin'" to do to their employers... The DUES PAYING fraternal membership.

The taint of collaboration with the stuttering prick by the fraternal leadership has become too rotten to ignore. The membership is owed an explaination.

We await.

The end game is seriously underway.

P.S.

To the older "gentleman" on the curb by the front door loudly rotating his dentures about "undermining the superintendent's authority... Shame on you, what kind of lesson are you teaching your children..."

The superintendent by virtue of one piss-poor decision after another has undermined himself. As authority goes, coming in the door he never had any in the first place. Mayor Daley said so.

Weis is someone who has repeatedly shown himself to be a deluded pathological liar and bereft of any integrity, honor, decency, respect, courage, humility or even a modicum of genuine manliness (which embodies the previously listed traits)cannot POSSIBLY be considered fit to lead CPD let alone command any kind of "authority."

We are teaching our children to not look so kindly upon being pissed on constantly.

We are teaching our children that Police Officers, as first responders are NOT SECOND CLASS CITIZENS who signed away any and all rights as a condition of employment. Regardless of what the mayor, the media and the superintendent fervently wants the public to believe. We are teaching our children brotherhood in the face of organized and entrenched oppostion. We are teaching our children to STAND UP AND FIGHT HARD FOR WHAT'S RIGHT!

We're teaching our children to be strong and to think and reason for themselves... To set themselves apart in a time when most people are too intellectually lazy and are more than content to follow the crowd.

Go away sir. You are a narrow minded, mean and stunted individual though you do have a right to your opinion.

Thank you to all the passer bys who honked to show support!

The only effective venue for this (or any future) protest is City Hall for a multitude of reasons, many cited earlier. FOP officers stubbornly refused to provide any explanation as to why they chose CPD HQ four miles away.

God knows that several of us unsuccessfully tried to persuade Mark Donahue and Greg Bella that any venue other than City Hall was asinine from the git-go.

Some FOP members are even convinced that current FOP leadership committed an act of SABOTAGE and betrayed their membership. At this time, I can NOT disprove such ugly allegations as unfounded. This is further compounded by the fact that Donahue & Co. refuse to explain their choice of venue.

The next City Council meeting at City Hall is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th.

I will have no further comment on this debacle until sometime after the general membership meeting of the FOP next Tuesday evening.

For personal reasons, I was not in attendance at either CPD HQ or City Hall this morning.

Cozzi made a mistake and paid for it. Then was made to pay for it again. That is our beef. I get it. Every copper gets it. And the general, non-police public does not care at all. Why should they? They, like many of us, see a guilty man. Cozzi should be free because he paid for his transgression - but not because he is now somehow innocent of what started this in the first place. The general public does not care about the reason why he was tried twice...they only care that he admitted guilt...and that is what makes it a losing position to use as an advertisement of why FOP members are disgusted.

Let Cozzi be your internal motivation if you want it to be,
but we MUST stop using Cozzi as one of our public reasons for being disgusted with the status quo. We MUST focus on those points which matter to the community, and by extension, us as a whole. We ALL want more police service. We ALL want safer neighborhoods. We ALL want to have faith and trust in our leader. We ALL need these things and expect them as citizens of this City. The sooner we do this, the better off we will be.

Saw Fioretti playing the room last night at the Memorial Foundation event along with other "mayoral hopefuls". The man we need and would give a fresh start to Chicago is David Hoffman, if only he would throw his hat into the ring.

The regular public does not understand our issue with Cozzi. They do not understand the nature of our job. They will never understand how the handling of this issue by Weiss makes the majority of officers hesitant/fearful of doing their jobs. They don't understand that as long as Weiss is superintendent, officers will do the bare minimum and not proactively police. I agree with earlier posts. During an event like the one today, we need to shut up about Cozzi. The public does not and will not understand this complex issue. When we scream about the injustice done to Cozzi, all the public hears is that we are in favor of police beatings. On this issue, Weiss will always win and we will always lose. Cozzi was in the wrong AND he got screwed. It was not necessary to make an example of this officer. Weiss was making an attempt to show a new sheriff was in town. He convinced officers that any complaint may turn into a federal case. Officers are not willing to risk their families welfare and their freedom for Weiss. The public will not understand this. We need to keep our mouths shut about Cozzi.

Got in the game WAY too late

You must have left way too early!

I got there just after 9AM and thought, this does not look good.

I went around the corner on Michigan and saw a lot more news media trucks than I thought would be there and by 10AM there had to at least five hundred people there.

Not as much as would be there if we had hit City Hall; but impressive as a statement of how much J-Fled and company is hated.

9/15/2010 02:03:00 PM

rh, Real Estate isn't selling much these days. Typical coppers, can't agree on anything. Won't get together for a show of support except for money.

I am about done, I leave it all up to the young officers to somehow carry on. But most of them don't know the history, and thus are condemned to repeat it.

Won't affect me, this is my last contract. Best of luck boys & girls.

Who among you are the leaders of the future? You can step up any time. Don't be shy.

9/15/2010 03:42:00 PM

Total attendance from my Unit,
out of 275 sworn: -1-

But man can they complain.

None ever go to an FOP General meeting, none ever step up to run for office or to pitch in with anything, but they sure sound righteous in that locker room complaining. Loudly and bitterly, as if someone really did them wrong.

But show up, show support? No way.

I would have to agree with jody weis about the gold brick, that statement was absolutely dead nuts on target.

Not waiting to have my ass kissed. But I am waiting for the FOP to show us a little respect. Don't need to be talked down to constantly like they are better than us.

And I do drag my crybaby ass to the meetings and listen to the same bullshit every month. So what is you point? My post was based on fact, where your post was based on assumptions. Why dont you add something to the thread? I will see you at the meeting if you still have a problem.

A huge protest should be held at City Hall on Wednesday, October 6th. The demonstrators should be police, firefighters, school teachers, union laborers, other city workers and most importantly, outraged citizens.

The paramount objective should be alerting the public to the manpower crisis as it affects the safety of the citizens as well as responding police officers. A distant secondary goal is for the immediate removal of the despicable, demoralizing, clueless, lying coward J-Fled. A leader must command the respect of his troops. J-Fled's pathetic lack of leadership is irreparable. A festering wound must be cleaned before it can heal.

All other issues should be placed on the back burner. FOCUS!:

If anyone believes that we should march to another location afterwards, I'd suggest that we should consider moving on to nearby local media locations that have given our plight the worst coverage. WLS-TV Channel 7 on State St. and the Tribune Tower on Michigan Ave.

You may also recall that the NYPD had a controversial yet highly successful demonstration at City Hall years ago. Afterwards, some protestors shut down traffic on the nearby Brooklyn Bridge in their rage.

The Michigan Ave. Bridge???

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

We know Bill wasn't right in what he did. What happened to Bill afterward can happen to any of us, so we should never shut up about Cozzi.

I have worked with Bill Cozzi. Don't you dare tell me to forget about one of my own who was railroaded to appease the ministers and the citizens. I will talk about Bill as long as Bill sits in that 4 X 4 cell that Jody put him.

All of you who want to forget about him are cowards. Your true character surfaces when you take the road that's not always popular. How sad that you would want to shut up about a person because it doesn't look good.

God forbid this department shits on you guys someday and all your friends forget about you because it doesn't look good to the public.

The real thing about Bill Cozzi is there but for the Grace of God goes any one of us.

Almost everyone there wore a miniature yellow police tape ribbon that said, "POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS FREE BILL COZZI..." Jody did cross the line with this and we are all in danger from this fool.

What was really sexy were the few red ribbons miniature crime scene ribbons which said, "DANGER NEVER TRUST A FED..."
