Radio Zones Down?

We happened to be off, but a bunch of comments popped off around noon yesterday saying multiple zones went down for some reason. Anyone have any info? The city saving money by skimping on maintenance again?

Maaaaybeeee this is something we should not publicize, regardless of whether or not it happened. The bad guys are always watching. Remember Mumbai? It can happen here anytime. And the revolver ain't gonna cut it, no matter how much you hate the FNG's. And the hair gel will lose it's hold when you're sweating and 7.62s are zipping by. We are all in it together. Please do not make ourselves look like a softer target than we are by reporting our problems for the bad guys to see.

Zone 4 has been horrible for the last month. It was down for much of the day today. Then when we switched back from citywide it was even worse. Everything was garbled and you couldn't hear the other officers. Complaints where answered with "I'll let my supervisor know" and that was that. Nothing was done. I guess there's no real reason for us to hear each other on the radio right?

zone 8 was out for about 15-20 min before the dispatchers told us to swithch to CW6 and as usual the Dummies in 006 2nd watch who as usual never listen to radio just keep transmitting, cutting people out, etc.blah blah.....big fat stinky BUBBA

We were told over Zone 2 that it was every zone that was down.. prior to it happening the radio just got quiet...they switched over to the backup system which sounded like the diffrence between an exspensive and cheap radio...during this time the mobile relay was unavailable...of course we were cutting each other off trying to talk to the dispatcher because we could not hear... Zone 3 (013 / 014) has been in the toilet for weeks. They have been operating on citywide all this time.

When all the other zones go down they are fucked. There are only a handful of citywide channels to operate on.

I thought OEMC was state of the art, world-class, and an example to show all the visiting VIPs? Fact is, the radio system is all SHITE. The PCAD system is probably 30 years old technology. The call-takers are about as worthless as a TMA, and the dispatchers are not much better. I can't think of one thing world-class about it. Maybe "third-world-class."

where did that 23 million dollars go?

i thought huberman bought a new digital radio system????

maybe the oemc needs to give the radio guys some OT so they can fine tune the system???

it seems like the best job at oemc is to be a dispatcher. they get unlimited OT. some double their salaries.

i guess a police officer's life does not matter........

Most of these problems are because the city does not listen to the guys who know what to do. They keep changing and modifying things as they go along.
IF they would listen to the guys who do the job, we would have a showplace, not j just an overly expensive eyesore.

Stop messing around with other nonsense and fix these radio problems. The radio is our LIFELINE. You are going to get us killed.

16/17 zone 1 was horrible yesterday. Officers couldnt understand each other and it was pretty dangerous. It's been like that for the past month or so.

I don't know where you work, but the dispatchers on my zone on 3rd watch are superstars who know something is amiss by the tenor of their voice.

The guys at TARA say it was a stealth A-Q operation, intended to test the system.

I agree that most of the call takers are useless, but many of the dispatchers are top notch and do look out for the troops. I know our regular 2nd watch CW 1 dispatcher is excellent and does a good job for everyone using CW1.

Try reading the Daily Bulletins, I know that since they put them on the computer nobody reads them but the old timers. They undertook a year long maintenance project zones that are going down are up on citywides.

Its in our CO book

Zone 3 was operating just fine until the city switched 013 & 014's radio's to the new "software". Things were soo bad zone 3 was switched to CW6. After less than a few hours Zone 3 was switched again because CW6 went down and zone 3 was then forced to CW5. We were told by the zone that we were lucky, because numerous zones and city wide channels were all down at the same time. Everything was working just fine until the city had to screw things up!! Now in 013 we only have 91 radios (short & long) in total! Out of those 91 radios we have 10 radios that need repair. Sad part is that these radios were just returned to us about a month ago from the radio shop with the new programming. We were also told that all the radios would be checked for problems! LIARS! The new "wide band" also sucks.

Blame goes to the mayor ShortShanks. His inept choices to run OEMC have done NOTHING but steal money by falsifying invoices, diverting funds to unknown benefactors. FORENSIC AUDIT. Blame the Aldermen too. How and why we are still in the electronic stoneage with all the money we sent to re-boot OEMC 3-4 times since it opened, not to mention the surcharge on your phone bills that will rise again. Are we still on an analog frequency? String up a couple of soup cans and we'd get better reception. Sorry Taxpayers, you lose again-Huberman's pathetic apology does cut it for me. Hope everyone votes against every Democratic Career politician. The 16th District Residents need to call 9-1-1 more often for every suspicious person, vehicle and disturbance and keep their officers IN the 16th District where they belong, protecting the homes and neighborhood of the taxpayer.

Are they really dummies or playing the game? After 6 were stripped why work? What is the incentive? One day at a time and one job at a time. Radio down is more down time.

One previous poster got it right, they are switching to the new digital system. Your scanner will be useless as soon as the system gets tested and the O.K. by the FCC to put it on the air.

They will be able to track your every move as the radios have GPS built right in. They will also be able to turn your radio on by remote and listen if they can't raise you on the air. This is only for your personal safety!(wink wink) All of the a affected zones will be up in the next few hours. After a few days the others will go through the same changes.

We all knew it was coming so it should be no big surprise.

There will be a shit load of unhappy scanner enthusiasts out there. To bad so sad!!!

Personally, I could give a shit about not publicizing this. It is what it is, THE TRUTH! Some more antiquated shit they call state of the art. LMAO! Trust me, we don't have to let the bad guys know how fucked up of an emergency response system we have. With nit-wits like fatboy "Radio Rick" in charge of the radio equipment, we'd be better of using fkn GI JOE WALKIE TALKIES! And what about Fat ass "JA" being fired for Motorola contact improprieties? Where's the radios that were bought with the illegal contract Rickie and Jimmy? They're sitting in boxes somewhere! But it doesnt matter anyway. They're already outdated and we never even turned the fkn things on!
Anyone remember the county building fire? NO ONE could communicate with anyone!
So please, spare me with the super cop shit. We're not sayin anything that hasn't been reported in the news or known via every scanner geek. OEMC is filled with nothing but a bunch of nepotism, double dipping political hacks. It makes HQ and City Hall look legit!
This department is an embarrassment to LE now. And as far as I'm concerned, after that last minuscule contract we got, the muts and thankless liberals deserve whatever the fk happens to them. You get what you pay for!

All digital is not the answer! It still has many flaws that need to be worked out. The analog system should always be maintained as a frontline system for many years to come.

Check NYPD 911 system.

These positions used to be filled by policemen who had often worked in the district they were dispatching. Today? These people remind me of the kind of cab driver or trucker who's constantly stopping passers-by to ask how to get somewhere. Just because you drive a cab/dispatch a zone for a living is no reason to study a map or atlas in return for that salary and know where things are -- especially where lives and property are on the line.

Stupid motherf__ers. Sounds like you're interrupting a party when you phone -- gales of laughter in the background.

I passed by a man down in the alley the other day simply because I'm so tired of arguing with them. Let someone else do it once he gets run over. I'm off.

Next time I see a building on fire at 3 AM -- same thing. I call it in, you argue, interrogate, cavil. I've had it.

As far as I'm concerned, the social contract has been cancelled by OEMC.

Kitty Genovese.

Digital sucks for public safety communications. When your signal goes south not even the coppers with supercop hearing will know what you said. CPD has a great radio system. It just needs some TLC from the sound of it. And if and when the CPD does go digital most of the newer generation scanners will work.

Yeah, it's the same as digital TV. There's no such thing as a weak-but-intelligible signal. It's either "on" or "off."

mAAAAAYBEEEEE this is something we should publicize. Seems to me if we want something fixed, this is the place to bitch about it. Some things do get fixed because of this insignificant blog. We as first responders should have nothing but the finest radio systems and the public (us included) who PAY taxes should expect equipment that works.
You pay $2.50 a month on your phone bill for the city's 911 system. Getting your money's worth? Do a search on digital radios. See how bad they really are.

The dispatchers need to rotate on different zones and stop trying to get boyfriends on the pdt. Some officers never get more than bullshit disturbances, while others get shootings, csa's, and bs domestics. Dispatchers you know who you are!
