Getting Rid of Vests

We were just thinking about this as we got a new vest last year. We had been thinking of taking the old bullet-resistant vest out to a range and seeing what damage it could stand up to. But this makes better sense:
  • I retired in November and have two old ballistic vests. I contacted the Marine Reserve Center at 3034 W. Foster and verified that they are actively collecting used vests. They use these vests to line their vehicles to absorb some of the impact from IEDs. The contact people are: Master Sgt Hernandez and Staff Sgt Pena 773-539-6464 ext330.

Lets clean out our closets and put all those old vests to good use. Hundreds of retirees can help out a lot of Marines. There are plenty of former Marines in each police district. How about if you guys collect in your District and make one big delivery to the Reserve Center.
This is something we've never seen the Department get behind, but it's something that many Departments across the county or state should think about doing. Just about every cop we know has an old vest lying around somewhere taking up space.

FYI:hanging a vest on a clothes line or target carrier is an invalid test.
Body armour is designed to be worn close to the body. The body helps absord and dissipate some of the kinetic energy.

It needs a human analog backing, otherwise the armour can fail.

Back in 2003-2005, most HMMWVs in Iraq/Afghanistan were "up-armored" meaning a regular vehicle with armor added as an afterthought (usually didn't work very well). We used old kevlar vests, scrap metal, wood, and sandbags to add armor to our vehicles. Now, most of the vehicles in theatre are the MRAPS, Buffalos, or full-armored HMMWVs. So while it is a good thought, combat troops in theatre don't need your old vests. I have heard of a program that sends old vests to the Iraq/Afghan Police, and a program that re-makes old vests into K9 vests.

I am willing to collect the vests at Area One if that's a convenience. Contact Detective Mike W, 3rd watch day off group one.

I've also been to Iraq with the Marines, and agree the thought is good, but unnecessary at this stag of the game. A better idea is to have that extra vest around for a family member when the Sh*t hit's the fan here.Like November 2012 when Barry is sent packing....

I've also seen a Iraq show on the military channel where a soldier was saying how they line the floor boards with old flak jackets.

Even if the vehicle is already armored, sometimes it's useful to put Kevlar on the inside as a "spall liner:" fragments of the armor itself can get knocked loose by a blast and ricochet around inside. The interior Kevlar catches these frags so troops don't.

Been out for a while so I don't know if the vehicles used by the USMCR have such a lining built in...

I served in Iraq. No need for the vests to armor up vehicles any more.

I'm also concerned that the scumbags that were taken on when bodies were needed for recruitment goals will get hold of these vests and give them to thugs on the street.

Don't give it up unless you know for a fact where it will be going.

How sad is it that we have boys in harms way, using surplus equipment not designed for the task to protect themselves?

That's just wrong on so many levels. I just realized that I could be talking about the military, or the CPD. Jesus H Christ how backwards have things become?

You must be a reserve sailor, always out of harms way.

If the Marines at the reserve center are "actively collecting used vests" to "...line their vehicles..." then fuck are you for contradict them.

And no I don't care what you've done, where you've been or if you served. That was then this is now.

Whether for our troops or for CFD, lets show our support and give up our old vest. GREAT IDEA SCC... Any more info, let us know.

Distribute the vests to homeowners with valid CFP licences and registered firearms. Just leave them on the front porches or throw them over the backyard fence. The addresses should now be available from your PDTs. You may need to call on these good citizens for help one day. What better way to make friends with the community?

What a sad commentary that our service people have to scrounge items to protect them from enemy. Still, so heart warming to see the efforts being made by Officers to help them stay safe. Brings tears to my eyes.

Bless you for thinking about those that are serving in the armed forces.

Maybe they need them, maybe they don't, but if it makes them feel a bit more secure, what is the problem?

SCC, that is a great idea. However, in these times we really need to think twice about giving them away.

You may need the old vests for family members when the breakdown and civil unrest come. I have two for my wife and son.

Old is better then nothing when your fellow Chicagoans decide to riot.

Years ago I gave an old vest of mine to a cab driver that I knew. Much later I ran into him and he told me that he was robbed and the asshole slashed at him with a knife. The vest kept him from injury and I felt good about that and didn't want to tell him that the vest may not have stopped a stabbing attack.

Stay safe, always wear your body armor working the street.

Seriously, just as I wrote this I had a thought. If there was a way to keep some surplus body armor handy, clean and ready like a fire extinguisher at police facilities in the event of an active shooter invading a station. District desk personnel a very vulnerable, sometimes even alone. Something to think about.

I served in Baghdad in 2005-06. Everything in theater is now up armored in cluding the humvees, no more hillbilly armor. In fact, humvees are fading by the wayside as most units are now using some type of MRAP or Buffalo armored veh. I hate to say this is a wasted effort to send these vests to the Marines, but I really dont think you'll be doing anyone a service sending items that are not needed while at the same time clogging up the logistical chain. Remember, some trucker still has to drive those vests from point A to B through ambush alley to get them there...

Let me get this right. We have the largest Defense Budget for any civilized Nation on Earth & The Marine Corps needs outdated compromised vests to line their vehicles? Maybe they should put out a drop box like the Salvation Army. Good Grief.

Really? When these outdated vests fail is the Good Sgt going to go to the deceased family, shrug his shoulders & say "I thought it was a good idea @ the Time?" This doesn't pass the smell test on so many levels.
