Revised Estimate Downward

Just last month, we were hearing how Lura Lynn Ryan had up to 3 years to live.

Evidently, that didn't pluck at the heartstrings enough, so Big Jim Thompson has revised his estimate downward in an effort to spring George Ryan from his 8 year sentence:
  • Lura Lynn Ryan, wife of jailed former Gov. George Ryan, has been diagnosed with a very aggressive lung cancer and given a prognosis of three to six months to live, according to former Gov. Jim Thompson, Ryan’s attorney.

As a result of the prognosis, Thompson has filed a motion seeking bail for Ryan, who is serving an eight year federal prison sentence in Terre Haute, Ind. “We are asking (U.S. District Court) Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer for a prompt answer on our earlier request for George’s bail,” said Thompson.

WBBM-AM 780 had the best report this afternoon though. We can't seem to locate the audio link, but their report around 5:00 PM related the following (we're paraphrasing here):
  • Mrs. Ryan has an aggressive form of lung cancer, that if untreated, would be fatal in 3 months.
We imagine that report is being sanitized as we speak, but maybe Mrs. Ryan ought to see a doctor, don't you think?

Here's the thing, even before that Libyan terror bomber got released for a supposedly "terminal" case of cancer that would kill him inside of 12 months (it's been two years now and he's expecting to live another decade or two), we've been dead set against releasing people on humanitarian grounds. You knew the risks when you committed the crime, and one of those risks is missing birthdays, holidays and funerals of loved ones. If you want to be a part of every one's life, don't do shit that gets you sent to prison for years and years.

Sorry Mrs. Ryan is ill. Life sucks sometimes and it all seems to end the same way eventually. Maybe modern medicine can grant her more time, but in the meantime, George owes the government a few more years of his own time.

Why should her being ill have anything to do with his sentence?
If anything, she benefited all the years he was playing, so tough bananas now baby... I say, let him rot in prison and I don't really care what her health status is...
He got a light sentence anyway, and it totally pisses me off that they keep going back to court to try to get him out of jail. SERVE YOUR SENTENCE!

Geez...
How about FREE COZZI?
There's a guy who never should have served a minute in jail, whereas Ryan should have gotten a life sentence...

A few steaks at Gibson's with George and the guys just might fix Lura Lynn right up.

How fucking pathetic to dress the old broad up with the oxygen tube and all in a transparent attempt to spring old George.

Too damn bad.

How about some humanitarian treatment for the 6 Willis children?

George Ryan has yet to express any remorse or sorrow for their horrific deaths.

Let him rot.

How could this be bail ? Bail is a sum of money (cash or a cash equivalent), exchanged for the release of an arrested person as a guarantee of that person's appearance for trial. You can’t bail out of prison, unless it is with a parachute off the prison wall. What kind of foolishness is this ? If Thompson wants to buy him out of jail I would think a nice bribe for our esteemed President to pardon him would be the way to go.

A citizen troller disagrees. SHE was convicted of nothing and letting George out temporarily is a humanitarian gesture for HER, not him. I heard on Don and Roma this morning another idiot complaining about George being responsible for the Willis kids deaths and he needs to serve everyday of his sentence. I am sick and tired of the corrupt plaintiff bar idea that Ryan is responsible for the horrible deaths of the Willis children. The reality is whoever was responsible for maintaining that trailer is responsible for those deaths. The fact someone driving that truck with an illegally issued license was NOT the cause of their deaths nor was Ryan. That driver actually driving the truck got less time than Ryan did as I recall. WTF? The best truck driver in the world could have been in the same position as that driver when the chunk of tail light assembly fell off. Finally, I also do not like my fellow citizens complaining about the corrupt George Ryan. Corruption is a way of life in this state. We had a chance to change it like New Jersey did in their last election. What do we do? We reelect Quinn and all the other corrupt Democrats. Now we are fixin to elect Emannual for our Mayor. And we are going to bitch about George Ryan already getting out of jail early? And I agree-Cozzi out too! Although if I was on that jury, he would have never been in jail. Of course then he would have had to sit through another trial.

What's the sense of sending people to jail?
We pay gas, electric, water, food, medical care, and basics of lifes luxuries. Yet the victim is not reimbursed one penny for his monetary losses and missed time off of work to obtain what we losely call justice. Now on top of all these failures were giving hardship furloughs, communed sentences, and passes from prison for the flimsiest of reasons. It insults the intelligence to call any of this justice.

Cancer is nothing to laugh at. Very sad.

That being said, Mrs Ryan benefited from the Gov's pilfery. Remember the evidence at trial? The Ryans never cashed a check in 2 years and took out a total of $700 from ATMs during that same time frame.

I can give a little on compassionate grounds. Move George to a facility close to whatever hospital she's in. Let him out during the day to visit some of the time. If/when she dies, he gets some days out before and after the funeral to plan and deal with it. Then back inside. I can give a little, but that doesn't include just letting him off.

George must have some real dirt on Big Jim for Thompson to continue to fight like this.

When George says he is sorry for years of corruption, truly sorry, I may support a commutation of his sentence.

Maybe President Sotoero will let George go for Christmas--that is pretty much his only hope.

Steve Dahl used to tell a hilarious story about a hammered George Ryan in the men's room at an Illini football game trying to tuck in his shirt with his ISP bodyguard looking on with a bemused look on his face.

Gents, I have to agree with what 7:02 said. I drove a truck for many, many years before I was hired as a Chicago Police Officer. I obtained my commercial D/L the legit way.. But I gotta tell you, what that driver did was done by all of us. If I pulled a load of steel which sat on a few 4x4's to make unloading easier, when I was unloaded all I did with the 4x4's was throw then onto the bed of the truck and drive to my next stop. Just as the illegal alien did with his truck. Only diffrence was none of mine fell off and killed anybody.Looking back it'samazing that none did fall off. I'm thankful for that. As the old saying goes, but for the grace of God.... George Ryan may be the most corrupt bastard to ever walk the earth. But he is NOT responsible for the deaths of the Willis children.

You answered your own question, (George's People?).

God bless america folks!

There were hundreds of bribe takers there skimming for themselves (clerks, D/L examiners, road testers, supervisors, you name it, they took it, cash was king).

I loved to go there in uniform to renew my license, somebody always grabbed your arm and rushed you right to the front of the line or opened a new line (professional courtesy?, I wish), they did not want you standing around there because you might SEE or HEAR something and your presence made EVEREYBODY nervous. It's hard to take a bribe with the cops around, kapesh?

And they moved a slim margin of dough up the supervisor chain to who knows who?

Old Georgie just didn't walk in and say where's mine? (but Jesse does).

I cannot believe how Naive the public is to think that one man controlled this operation and was totally responsoble for those kids demise.

Thousans of people got illegal drivers licenses thru SOS facilities (not just truck drivers), people that could not read, pass a written, vision, or driving test, had their records disappear, revocations and suspensions lost or missing, and yet they all got D/L's if the price was right!

How many accidents and deaths did those people cause? (oh yeah, sorry, no investigation there).

Paul Powell said it best, "I love shoeboxes"!

George Ryan was Jim Thompson's Lt. Governor for many years. (1983–1991) 2nd in command so to speak.

They earned together, George knows things. You know, things about Jim Thompson. Birds of a feather. If any governor was crooked and never got caught it was Big Jim Thompson.

Jim Thompson twisted arms, hard, of the partners of Winston & Strawn to pony up to pay for George's $20 million dollar defense. The partners yelled like crazy. Still, Big Jim made them pay, he was that big of a rainmaker over there.

And in spite of a $20 million dollar defense, Big Jim's pal George was still convicted, still sentenced to prison and still actually went to prison and is still actually sitting in prison.

And there Big Jim was, at George Ryan's side every step of the way.

There can be no greater proof of George Ryan's absolute guilt than there having been spent upwards of $20 million bucks on a defense and being convicted on almost all counts anyway.

And yes, the corruption in George Ryan's Secretary of State office was responsible for the deaths of the 6 Willis children.

Rot in prison George. Then, when your time here is done, rot in hell.

To 12/16-109:17. I am going to try to explain it one more time. 1) The accident that caused the deaths of the Willis children WAS NOT the result of the driver driving the truck. It was caused by poor maintenance and perhaps other issues but at the end of the day, it was equipment failure on the shipping container trailer chasis and not some driver infraction. 2) The accident resulted when a piece of left rear trailer light and mudflap assembly broke off and Mr. Willis ran over it while traveling at highway speeds. It punctured his gas tank and the van burst into flames. Mr. Willis WAS NOT responsible for the accident either. The chain of events that caused this accident could have happened to any truck driver hauling that chasis. Its the same as the crash of Flight
191 in 1979. I don't imagine anyone is blaming the pilot, Walter Lux because an engine fell off during take off. This business with the fault of the Willis crash is the brain child of a crummy ambulance chasing lawyer, with the free publicity provided by our corrupt and politically motivated journalists to propell their interests in one political party over another. The Willis crash just happened to a guy who got his license from a corrupt government friends. And that is what we all should remember. Its not George Ryan-it is the entire corrupt government culture that you are confusing with an individual incident. If that driver changed lanes into the Willis van, I would agree with you. Ryan and his administration has blood on its hands.

Why? As his trial went on, not once did George express any remorse for what he did. In fact, he denied everything up to the end. He gets found guilty and now we need to feel sympathy for him?

Don't you remember that during his sentencing, Thompson tried using George's age as a factor to consider ? When that didn't work, he then tried using Georges own health problems.

Now suddenly his wife is gravely ill and paraded in front of the news media?

Sorry. You plays the game and takes your chances. Ol George knew this from the beginning. He has my sympathy but that's not enough to justify an early release.
